Abstract

Background: This study compared clinical and radiographic findings for the treatment of Class II furcation defects in human mandibular molars using anorganic bovine-derived hydroxyapatite matrix (ABM)/cell-binding peptide (P-15) or open flap debridement (OFD). Methods: Twelve subjects showing two comparable Class II furcation defects in their mandibular molars were enrolled. The defects in each subject were assigned randomly to the test (ABM/P-15) or the control (OFD) group. Clinical measurements and standardized radiographs were taken at baseline and 6 to 7 months after surgery. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the test and control groups for any clinical or radiographic parameter (P >0.05). On comparing the baseline and final measurements, the gain in horizontal clinical attachment level and reduction in gingival recession were significant only in the test group (P≤0.02), whereas the gain in the vertical clinical attachment level was significant in both groups (P≤0.04). In the test group, four of 12 sites showed complete closure, and five showed partial closure; in the control group, three defects showed complete closure, and four showed partial closure (P=0.42). Subtraction radiography revealed similar gains in bone height and increases in mean bone density with both treatments (P>0.05). Conclusions: ABM/P-15 yielded favorable results in the treatment of Class II furcation defects over a 6-month evaluation period; however, there was no difference compared to OFD. Further studies using a larger sample size are needed to confirm the present findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of photopolymerizable unsaturated polyester resins based on PET waste are described. The resins came from a depolymerization process based on the glycolysis of PET by diethylene glycol (DEG). Different molecular weights of glycolysates were synthesized. Then, the latter was functionalized by a methyl hemiester of maleic acid to obtain unsatured α,ω‐bismaleate PET oligomers. In the presence of an electron donor monomer, such as triethylene glycol divinyl ether, these electron acceptor oligomers were copolymerized by way of charge‐transfer complexes under UV irradiation. The reaction was monitored in situ by real‐time IR spectroscopy to study the kinetics of photopolymerization. This one was studied in relation with the physical and chemical characteristics of oligoesters and the composition of mixtures containing divinyl ethers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Gelatin gels are well-known for their ability to form nonpermanent, physical gels at room temperature and for their numerous applications in photographic and food industries. The difficulties in understanding the processes of gelation and the properties of the physical gels is partly due to the nature of the molecules that exhibit this state:  these are often biopolymers. Concerning gelatin, a regain of interest appeared recently, in relation with the development of new types of molecules&sbd;mammalian gelatins were almost exclusively considered so far in the literature. In this series of two papers we investigated gelatin samples from various origins, mammalian and fish gelatins, with the aim of comparing their properties to the reference samples generally used in photographic and food applications. The samples were characterized by their imino acid composition, which indeed varies according to the biodiversity of the species from which they are extracted. The physical and chemical aspects are mainly reported in this paper, while the companion paper deals with the rheological properties. The influence of the thermal treatments, of the gelatin concentration, of the molecular weight, and of the solvent (aqueous and mixed solvents) was put in evidence and finally blending of samples was achieved. Optical rotation measurements were mainly performed; they allow us to fully characterize the development of the triple helices, which depends on the parameters mentioned before. A systematic comparison of the temperatures of helix formation and melting was undertaken. The results are discussed in the context of the models of helix−coil transitions often used for proteins and polypeptides and sometimes for polysaccharides.

92. All Gelatin Networks:  2. The Master Curve for Elasticity

Abstract

The rheological properties of gelatin gels from various sources (fish and mammalian) were followed in the course of the sol−gel transition and during gel maturation, by performing dynamic measurements under very small deformations. Different concentrations and molecular weights were investigated. The solvent was mainly water, but mixed solvents containing water and glycerol were also considered. Blends of gelatins from fish and mammalian in aqueous solutions were prepared and rheologically characterized. A systematic comparison was established between these measurements and those presented in paper 1 of the series. The comparison between the storage modulus and the concentration of helices leads to a master curve valid for all the samples investigated. This master curve is analyzed in terms of the percolation regime, near the threshold and in terms of a homogeneous network far from the threshold. In the percolation regime, a critical exponent of 2 is found for the storage modulus versus the distance to the threshold, in agreement with previous results. The theoretical models for rigid networks are briefly presented. The fully developed network appears as an entangled assembly of rigid rods (triple helices) connected by flexible links. This study shows that gelatin networks under small deformations do not behave like rubber-like networks, where long random coils are connected by local cross-links or entanglements.

Abstract

We have recently reported the cloning of a novel protein, TRiC-P5, with significant homology with protein 1 of the t-complex (TCP1). In the present study, the cellular localization of TRiC-P5 in Raji cells has been determined using an antiserum raised against a 18.5 kDa fusion protein. Results from cell fractionation and immunoblot studies indicate that TRiC-P5 is mainly localized in the cytoplasm. In addition, a significant part of TRiC-P5 is also found in the nucleus where it is attached to the nuclear matrix, a complex filament network involved in essential cellular functions such as DNA replication, and RNA transcription and maturation. Immunofluorescence experiments using the anti-TRiC-P5 antibodies confirm these results. We also provide evidence that, in the cytoplasm, TRiC-P5 is part of a large protein complex, most probably the TCP1-ring complex (TRiC), a hetero-oligomeric ring complex that plays a role of molecular chaperone in the folding of actin and tubulin.

Abstract

The year 2011 was full of significant advances in all areas of medicine. Whether small or large issues, they all have an impact on daily practice in general internal medicine. For example, intravenous administration of diuretics in heart failure shows no benefit. But double dose may improve symptoms faster. Direct Xa inhibitors are emerging as alternative to anti-vitamin K. beta-blockers reduce overall mortality in COPD and do not worsen lung function significantly. Each year, the chief residents from the Department of internal medicine at the University hospital of Lausanne meet to share their readings. Twelve new therapeutic considerations of 2011 are reviewed here.

Abstract

Motivation: The identification of the functional variants responsible for observed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) signals is one of the most challenging tasks of the post-GWAS research era. Several tools have been developed to annotate genetic variants by their genomic location and potential functional implications. Each of these tools has its own requirements and internal logic, which forces the user to become acquainted with each interface. Results: From an awareness of the amount of work needed to analyze a single locus, we have built a flexible, versatile and easy-to-use web interface designed to help in prioritizing variants and predicting their potential functional implications. This interface acts as a single-point of entry linking association results with reference tools and relevant experiments.
