51. Turbulent Angular Momentum Transport in Weakly-Ionized Accretion Disks

Abstract

Understanding the mechanism that drives accretion has been the primary challenge in accretion disk theory. Turbulence provides a natural means of dissipation and the removal of angular momentum, but firmly establishing its presence in disks proved for many years to be difficult. The realization in the 1990s that a weak magnetic field will destabilize a disk and result in a vigorous turbulent transport of angular momentum has revolutionized the field. Much of accretion disk research now focuses on understanding the implications of this mechanism for astrophysical observations. At the same time, the success of this mechanism depends upon a sufficient ionization level in the disk for the flow to be well-coupled to the magnetic field. Many disks, such as disks around young stars and disks in binary systems that are in quiescence, are too cold to be sufficiently ionized, and so efforts to establish the presence of turbulence in these disks continues. This dissertation focuses on several possible mechanisms for the turbulent transport of angular momentum in weakly-ionized accretion disks: gravitational instability, radial convection and vortices driving compressive motions. It appears that none of these mechanisms are very robust in driving accretion. A discussion is given, based on these results, as to the most promising directions to take in the search for a turbulent transport mechanism that does not require magnetic fields. 52. Nonlinear Stability of Thin, Radially-Stratified Disks

Abstract

We perform local numerical experiments to investigate the nonlinear stability of thin, radially-stratified disks. We demonstrate the presence of radial convective instability when the disk is nearly in uniform rotation, and show that the net angular momentum transport is slightly inwards, consistent with previous investigations of vertical convection. We then show that a convectively-unstable equilibrium is stabilized by differential rotation. Convective instability is determined by the Richardson number Ri = N_r^2/(q\Omega)^2, where N_r is the radial Brunt-Vaisala frequency and q\Omega is the shear rate. Classical convective instability in a nonshearing medium (Ri -> -infinity) is suppressed when Ri > -1, i.e. when the shear rate becomes greater than the growth rate. Disks with a nearly-Keplerian rotation profile and radial gradients on the order of the disk radius have Ri > -0.01 and are therefore stable to local nonaxisymmetric disturbances. One implication of our results is that the ``baroclinic'' instability recently claimed by Klahr & Bodenheimer is either global or nonexistent. 53. Linear Theory of Thin, Radially-Stratified Disks

Abstract

We consider the nonaxisymmetric linear theory of radially-stratified disks. We work in a shearing-sheet-like approximation, where the vertical structure of the disk is neglected, and develop equations for the evolution of a plane-wave perturbation comoving with the shear flow (a shearing wave, or ``shwave''). We calculate a complete solution set for compressive and incompressive short-wavelength perturbations in both the stratified and unstratified shearing-sheet models. We develop expressions for the late-time asymptotic evolution of an individual shwave as well as for the expectation value of the energy for an ensemble of shwaves that are initially distributed isotropically in k-space. We find that: (i) incompressive, short-wavelength perturbations in the unstratified shearing sheet exhibit transient growth and asymptotic decay, but the energy of an ensemble of such shwaves is constant with time (consistent with Afshordi, Mukhopadhyay & Narayan 2004); (ii) short-wavelength compressive shwaves grow asymptotically in the unstratified shearing sheet, as does the energy of an ensemble of such shwaves; (iii) incompressive shwaves in the stratified shearing sheet have density and azimuthal velocity perturbations \delta \Sigma,\delta v_y ~ t^{-Ri} (for |Ri| << 1), where Ri = N_x^2/(q \Omega)^2 is the Richardson number, N_x^2 is the square of the radial Brunt-Vaisala frequency and q\Omega is the effective shear rate; (iv) the energy of an ensemble of incompressive shwaves in the stratified shearing sheet behaves asymptotically as Ri t^{1-4Ri} for |Ri| << 1. 54. Nonlinear Outcome of Gravitational Instability in Disks with Realistic Cooling

Abstract

We consider the nonlinear outcome of gravitational instability in optically thick disks with a realistic cooling function. We use a numerical model that is local, razor-thin, and unmagnetized. External illumination is ignored. Cooling is calculated from a one-zone model using analytic fits to low temperature Rosseland mean opacities. The model has two parameters: the initial surface density Sigma_0 and the rotation frequency Omega. We survey the parameter space and find: (1) The disk fragments when t_c,eff Omega = 1, where t_c,eff is an effective cooling time defined as the average internal energy of the model divided by the average cooling rate. This is consistent with earlier results that used a simplified cooling function. (2) The initial cooling time t_c0 or a uniform disk with Q = 1 can differ by orders of magnitude from t_c,eff in the nonlinear outcome. The difference is caused by sharp variations in the opacity with temperature. The condition t_c0 Omega = 1 therefore does not necessarily indicate where fragmentation will occur. (3) The largest difference between t_c,eff and t_c0 is near the opacity gap, where dust is absent and hydrogen is largely molecular. (4) In the limit of strong illumination the disk is isothermal; we find that an isothermal version of our model fragments for Q < 1.4. Finally, we discuss some physical processes not included in our model, and find that most are likely to make disks more susceptible to fragmentation. Abstract

The mechanism of molecular oxygen activation is the subject of controversy in the copper amine oxidase family. At their active sites, copper amine oxidases contain both a mononuclear copper ion and a protein-derived quinone cofactor. Proposals have been made for the activation of molecular oxygen via both a Cu(II)-aminoquinol catalytic intermediate and a Cu(I)-semiquinone intermediate. Using protein crystallographic freeze-trapping methods under low oxygen conditions combined with single-crystal microspectrophotometry, we have determined structures corresponding to the iminoquinone and semiquinone forms of the enzyme. Methylamine reduction at acidic or neutral pH has revealed protonated and deprotonated forms of the iminoquinone that are accompanied by a bound oxygen species that is likely hydrogen peroxide. However, methylamine reduction at pH 8.5 has revealed a copper-ligated cofactor proposed to be the semiquinone form. A copper-ligated orientation, be it the sole identity of the semiquinone or not, blocks the oxygen-binding site, suggesting that accessibility of Cu(I) may be the basis of partitioning O2 activation between the aminoquinol and Cu(I).

Abstract

The Antarctic Tropospheric Chemistry Investigation (ANTCI) was carried out from late November to December 2003 with both extended ground-based and tethered balloon studies at Amundsen Scott Station, South Pole. ANTCI 2003 was the first of two Antarctic field studies with the primary goal of further exploring the active photochemistry of the South Pole region that was first identified in the previous Investigation of Sulfur Chemistry in the Antarctic Troposphere (ISCAT) program. Since ISCAT was fully ground-based, ANTCI 2003 goals included expanding chemical studies both vertically upward to investigate mixing and horizontally to better understand large-scale plateau NOx production and transport. Thus, in addition to ground-based experiments at South Pole, Twin Otter aircraft sampling took place out to hundreds of kilometers in several directions from the South Pole. These were designed to specifically address the issue of how representative past South Pole chemical measurements are of the surrounding high plateau region. The Twin Otter was also used to make transects along the coast both north and south of McMurdo Station. The present paper summarizes the overall setting and results of this investigation and highlights the many new findings that were obtained. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Although in principle ECC (electrochemical concentration cell) ozonesondes are absolute measuring devices, in practice they have several "artefacts" which change over the course of a flight. Most of the artefacts have been corrected in the recommendations of the Assessment of Standard Operating Procedures for Ozone Sondes (ASOPOS) report (Smit et al., 2021), giving an overall uncertainty of 5 %–10 % throughout the profile. However, the conversion of the measured cell current into the sampled ozone concentration still needs to be quantified better, using time-varying background current and more appropriate pump efficiencies. We describe an updated methodology for ECC sonde data processing that is based on the Jülich Ozone Sonde Intercomparison Experiment (JOSIE) 2009/2010 and JOSIE Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (JOSIE-SHADOZ) 2017 test chamber data. The methodology resolves the slow and fast time responses of the ECC ozonesonde and in addition applies calibration functions to make the sonde data traceable to the JOSIE ozone reference UV photometer (OPM). The stoichiometry (O3/I2) factors and their uncertainties along with fast and slow reaction pathways for the different sensing solution types used in the global ozonesonde network are determined. Experimental evidence is given for treating the background current of the ECC sensor as the superposition of a constant ozone-independent component (IB0 , measured before ozone exposure in the sonde preparation protocol) and a slow time-variant ozone-dependent current determined from the initial measured ozone current using a first-order numerical convolution. The fast sensor current is refined using the time response determined in sonde preparation with a first-order deconvolution scheme. Practical procedures for initializing the numerical deconvolution and convolution schemes to determine the slow and fast ECC currents are given. Calibration functions for specific ozonesondes and sensing solution type combinations were determined by comparing JOSIE 2009/2010 and JOSIE-SHADOZ 2017 profiles with the JOSIE OPM. With fast and slow currents resolved and the new calibration functions, a full uncertainty budget is obtained. The time response correction methodology makes every ozonesonde record traceable to one standard, i.e. the OPM of JOSIE, enabling the goal of a 5 % relative uncertainty to be met throughout the global ozone network. 64. Dynamical drivers of free-tropospheric ozone increases over equatorial Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Positive trends in tropical free-tropospheric (FT) ozone are frequently ascribed to emissions growth, but less is known about the effects of changing dynamics. Extending a prior study (Thompson et al., 2021; https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JD034691; "T21"), we re-examine Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (SHADOZ) ozone trends over equatorial Southeast Asia (ESEA), one of Earth's most convectively active regions, using 25 years (1998-2022) of ozone soundings. T21 posited that early-year positive FT ozone trends at equatorial SHADOZ stations are related to decreasing convection. The 25-year analysis of Kuala Lumpur and Watukosek SHADOZ records finds that +5 to +15% (+2 to +6 nmol mol-1) per decade FT ozone trends from ~February-April coincide with large increases in satellite infrared brightness temperatures and outgoing longwave radiation, indicators of declining convective activity. MERRA-2 reanalyses exhibit decreases in upper tropospheric velocity potential and precipitable water, also indicating diminished convection. In contrast, trends in ozone and convective indicators are generally weak the rest of the year. These results suggest that decreases in convective intensity and frequency are primary drivers of FT ozone build-up over ESEA early in the year, i.e., waning convection suppresses lofting and dilution of ozone. Decreasing convection promotes accumulation of biomass burning emissions typical of boreal spring even though satellite FT carbon monoxide trends (2002-2022) over ESEA follow a global decrease pattern. Finally, our results demonstrate the advantages of monthly or seasonally resolved trends over annual means for robust attribution of observed ozone trends, challenging models to reproduce these detailed features in simulations of the past 25 years. 66. Improving data quality in long-term Canadian ozone sounding records

Abstract

The importance of long-term ozonesonde records as a stable reference has led to increased attention to quantifying uncertainties and changes in ozonesonde data. The recent Assessment of Standard Operating Procedures for Ozone Sondes (ASOPOS 2.0; WMO/GAW Report #268) recommended that homogeneity and long-term stability in ozone sounding network time series be evaluated regularly by comparison with satellite sensors, as well as ground-based photometers.An abrupt change in ozone bias relative to several satellite sensors – a total column ozone (TCO) “dropoff” of about 2-3% – has been reported at number of ozonesonde stations (Stauffer et al., 2020), including Canadian stations. The dropoff affects stratospheric measurements from the EnSci ozonesonde, after 2013 (approximately serial number 26000). The Canadian network recently switched to Science Pump sondes (after serial number 32000), and this has reversed the dropoff, and approximately restored agreement with satellite sensors.It is not standard practice to calibrate individual ozonesonde pumps before launch, as this is difficult and labour-intensive; rather an average pump calibration is used in data processing. Recently, an analysis of an extensive record of individual EnSci pump calibrations made since 2009 (Nakano and Morofuji, 2022) has shown a small negative shift in the low-pressure pump correction, equal to 2% at 20 hPa and 4% at 10 hPa. This agrees very well with the average differences found with MLS at 31 hPa and 10 hPa, for Canadian data. The use of these new pump corrections with Canadian data is explored, and results are compared to MLS, and other satellite sensors., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract —J. BLUNDEN, T. BOYER, AND E. BARTOW-GILLIES Earth’s global climate system is vast, complex, and intricately interrelated. Many areas are influenced by global-scale phenomena, including the “triple dip” La Niña conditions that prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean nearly continuously from mid-2020 through all of 2022; by regional phenomena such as the positive winter and summer North Atlantic Oscillation that impacted weather in parts the Northern Hemisphere and the negative Indian Ocean dipole that impacted weather in parts of the Southern Hemisphere; and by more localized systems such as high-pressure heat domes that caused extreme heat in different areas of the world. Underlying all these natural short-term variabilities are long-term climate trends due to continuous increases since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases. In 2022, the annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 417.1±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. Global mean tropospheric methane abundance was 165% higher than its pre-industrial level, and nitrous oxide was 24% higher. All three gases set new record-high atmospheric concentration levels in 2022. Sea-surface temperature patterns in the tropical Pacific characteristic of La Niña and attendant atmospheric patterns tend to mitigate atmospheric heat gain at the global scale, but the annual global surface temperature across land and oceans was still among the six highest in records dating as far back as the mid-1800s. It was the warmest La Niña year on record. Many areas observed record or near-record heat. Europe as a whole observed its second-warmest year on record, with sixteen individual countries observing record warmth at the national scale. Abstract

The Antarctic polar vortex creates unique chemical and dynamical conditions when the stratospheric air over Antarctica is isolated from the rest of the stratosphere. As a result, stratospheric ozone within the vortex remains largely unchanged for a 5-month period from April until late August when the sunrise and extremely cold temperatures create favorable conditions for rapid ozone loss. Such prolonged stable conditions within the vortex make it possible to estimate the total ozone levels there from sparse wintertime ozone observations at the South Pole. The available records of focused Moon (FM) observations by Dobson and Brewer spectrophotometers at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station (for the periods 1964–2022 and 2008–2022, respectively) as well as integrated ozonesonde profiles (1986–2022) and MERRA-2 reanalysis data (1980–2022) were used to estimate the total ozone variability and long-term changes over the South Pole. Comparisons with MERRA-2 reanalysis data for the period 1980–2022 demonstrated that the uncertainties of Dobson and Brewer daily mean FM values are about 2.5 %–4 %. Wintertime (April–August) MERRA-2 data have a bias with Dobson data of -8.5 % in 1980–2004 and 1.5 % in 2005–2022. The mean difference between wintertime Dobson and Brewer data in 2008–2022 was about 1.6 %; however, this difference can be largely explained by various systematic errors in Brewer data. The wintertime ozone values over the South Pole during the last 20 years were about 12 % below the pre-1980s level; i.e., the decline there was nearly twice as large as that over southern midlatitudes. It is probably the largest long-term ozone decline aside from the springtime Antarctic ozone depletion. While wintertime ozone decline over the pole has hardly any impact on the environment, it can be used as an indicator to diagnose the state of the ozone layer, particularly because it requires data from only one station. Dobson and ozonesonde data after 2001 show a small positive, but not statistically significant, trend in ozone values of about 1.5 % per decade that is in line with the trend expected from the concentration of the ozone-depleting substances in the stratosphere. Abstract

Ozonesonde data constitute a mainstay of satellite calibration and are used for climatologies and analysis of trends, especially in the lower stratosphere where satellites are most uncertain. The electrochemical-concentration cell (ECC) ozonesonde has been deployed at ~100 stations worldwide since the 1960s, with changes over time in manufacture and procedures, including details of the cell chemical solution and data processing. As a consequence, there are biases among different stations and discontinuities in profile timeseries from individual site records. Since 1996 the Jülich [Germany] Ozone Sonde Intercomparison Experiment (JOSIE) has periodically tested ozonesondes in a simulation chamber designated the World Calibration Centre for Ozonesondes by WMO. In October- November 2017 a JOSIE campaign evaluated the sondes and procedures used in SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes), a 14-station tropical and subtropical network. A distinctive feature of the 2017 JOSIE was that the tests were conducted by operators from eight SHADOZ stations; Nairobi, Natal, Irene, Costa Rica, Paramaribo, Reunion, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur. Experimental protocols and preliminary results for the SHADOZ sonde configurations, which represent most of those in use today, are described. SHADOZ stations that follow WMO-recommended protocols record total ozone within 3% of the JOSIE reference instrument. Instrument biases noted in prior JOSIE and field tests like BESOS (2004) were noted in JOSIE-2017, with maximum effect in the stratosphere. In June 2018 we organized a series of dual launches during the OWLETS II campaign in the Maryland and Chesapeake Bay area (SHALLOTS = SHADOZ-OWLETS ParaLLel Ozonesonde Test Study). Instrument and solution types were varied as in JOSIE-2017 and three radiosonde-ozonesonde variants were tested. An example of a parallel sampling in SHALLOTS, from a Greenbelt EnSCI-iMet sonde combination flown with the Wallops SPCLMS package, is illustrated in the Figure. The result was a range of biases but in general the instrument combination (EnSCI-iMet) deployed at 11 SHADOZ stations recorded ~5-10% less ozone in the stratosphere than the SPC ECC sonde flown with a Vaisala or LMS system. These 2017 and 2018 results and prior JOSIEs demonstrate that regular testing is essential to maintain best practices in ozonesonde operations and to ensure high-quality data for the ozone assessment communities.

Abstract

Although in principle the ECC (Electrochemical Concentration Cell) ozonesonde is an absolute measuring device, in practice it has several “artefacts” which change over the course of a flight. Most of the artefacts have been corrected in the recommendations of the Assessment of Standard Operating Procedures for Ozone Sondes Report (GAW Report No. 268), giving an overall uncertainty of 5–10 % throughout the profile. However, the conversion of sampled ozone into the measured cell current has not been fully quantified, resulting in time-varying background current and pump efficiencies. We describe an updated methodology for ECC sonde data processing that is based on JOSIE 2009/2010 and JOSIE 2017-SHADOZ test chamber data. The stoichiometry (O3/I2) factors and their uncertainties along with the fast and the slow reaction pathways for the different sensing solution types used in the global ozonesonde network are determined. Experimental evidence is given for treating the background current of the ECC-sensor as the superposition of a constant ozone independent component (IB0, measured before ozone exposure in the sonde preparation protocol) and a slow time-variant ozone-dependent current determined from the initial measured ozone current using a first-order numerical convolution. The fast sensor current is refined using the time response determined in sonde preparation with a first order deconvolution scheme. Practical procedures for initializing the numerical deconvolution and convolution schemes to determine the slow and fast ECC currents are given. Calibration functions for specific ozonesondes and sensing solution type combinations were determined by comparing JOSIE 2009/2010 and JOSIE-2017-SHADOZ profiles with the JOSIE ozone reference UV-photometer (OPM). With fast and slow currents resolved and the new calibration functions, a full uncertainty budget is obtained. The time responses correction methodology makes every ozonesonde record traceable to one standard, i.e. the OPM of JOSIE, enabling the goal of a 5 % relative uncertainty to be met throughout the global ozone network. NOAA's program of long-term monitoring of the vertical distribution of ozone with electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesondes has undergone a number of changes over the 50-year record. In order to produce a homogenous data set, these changes must be documented and, where necessary, appropriate corrections applied. This is the first comprehensive and consistent reprocessing of NOAA's ozonesonde data records that corrects for these changes using the rawest form of the data (cell current and pump temperature) in native resolution as well as a point-by-point uncertainty calculation that is unique to each sounding. The reprocessing is carried out uniformly at all eight ozonesonde sites in NOAA's network with differences in sensing solution and ozonesonde types accounted for in the same way at all sites. The corrections used to homogenize the NOAA ozonesonde data records greatly improve the ozonesonde measurements with an average one sigma uncertainty of +/- 4-6% in the stratosphere and +/- 5-20% in the troposphere. A comparison of the integrated column ozone from the ozonesonde profile with co-located Dobson spectrophotometers total column ozone measurements shows agreement within +/- 5% for >70% of the profiles. Very good agreement is also found in the stratosphere between ozonesonde profiles and profiles retrieved from the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) instruments.
