51. Bifurcation structure of unstable periodic orbits in plane Couette flow with the Smagorinsky model

Abstract

In order to obtain insights into dynamics of developed plane Couette turbulence, this paper considers bifurcation structure of unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) in the large-eddy-simulation (LES) system with the Smagorinsky-type eddy viscosity model. Treating the Smagorinsky constant as a bifurcation parameter, we detect the bifurcation points connecting two known UPOs which were separately discovered in the Navier--Stokes system [G. Kawahara and S. Kida, J. Fluid Mech., 449, 291--300 (2001)]. At the moderately high Reynolds number, the LES UPO of the present study possesses the spanwise vortices which seem to be caused by the streak instability and appear in the central region of the channel. We note that to our knowledge a spanwise vortex has not been reported through the UPO analysis of wall flows. The stretched spanwise vortices of the LES UPO enhance transfer of the streamwise turbulent momentum as in developed near-wall turbulence.

56. Collective organisation and screening in two-dimensional turbulence

Abstract

Following recent evidence that the vortices in decaying two-dimensional turbulence can be classified into small--mobile, and large--quasi-stationary, this paper examines the evidence that the latter might be considered a `crystal' whose formation embodies the inverse cascade of energy towards larger scales. Several diagnostics of order are applied to the ostensibly disordered large vortices. It is shown that their geometric arrangement is substantially more regular than random, that they move more slowly than could be expected from simple mean-field arguments, and that their energy is significantly lower than in a random reorganisation of the same vortices. This is traced to screening of long-range interactions by the preferential association of vortices of opposite sign, and it is argued that this is due to the mutual capture of corrotating vortices, in a mechanism closer to tidal disruption than to electrostatic screening. Finally, the possible relation of these `stochastic crystals' to fixed points of the dynamical system representation of the turbulent flow is briefly examined.

57. An Analytical Solution to the IMU Initialization Problem for Visual-Inertial Systems

Abstract

The fusion of visual and inertial measurements is becoming more and more popular in the robotics community since both sources of information complement well each other. However, in order to perform this fusion, the biases of the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as well as the direction of gravity must be initialized first. Additionally, in case of a monocular camera, the metric scale is also needed. The most popular visual-inertial initialization approaches rely on accurate vision-only motion estimates to build a non-linear optimization problem that solves for these parameters in an iterative way. In this paper, we rely on the previous work in [1] and propose an analytical solution to estimate the accelerometer bias, the direction of gravity and the scale factor in a maximum-likelihood framework. This formulation results in a very efficient estimation approach and, due to the non-iterative nature of the solution, avoids the intrinsic issues of previous iterative solutions. We present an extensive validation of the proposed IMU initialization approach and a performance comparison against the state-of-the-art approach described in [2] with real data from the publicly available EuRoC dataset, achieving comparable accuracy at a fraction of its computational cost and without requiring an initial guess for the scale factor. We also provide a C++ open source reference implementation.

Abstract

With the advent of digital technology, it is more common that committed crimes or legal disputes involve some form of speech recording where the identity of a speaker is questioned [1]. In face of this situation, the field of forensic speaker identification has been looking to shed light on the problem by quantifying how much a speech recording belongs to a particular person in relation to a population. In this work, we explore the use of speech embeddings obtained by training a CNN using the triplet loss. In particular, we focus on the Spanish language which has not been extensively studies. We propose extracting the embeddings from speech spectrograms samples, then explore several configurations of such spectrograms, and finally, quantify the embeddings quality. We also show some limitations of our data setting which is predominantly composed by male speakers. At the end, we propose two approaches to calculate the Likelihood Radio given out speech embeddings and we show that triplet loss is a good alternative to create speech embeddings for forensic speaker identification., Comment: Long Paper: Neural Computing and Applications, Special Issue on LatinX in AI Research (2021). 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

To isolate the multiscale dynamics of the logarithmic layer of wall-bounded turbulent flows, a novel numerical experiment is conducted in which the mean tangential Reynolds stress is eliminated except in a subregion corresponding to the typical location of the logarithmic layer in channels. Various statistical comparisons against channel flow databases show that, despite some differences, this modified flow system reproduces the kinematics and dynamics of natural logarithmic layers well, even in the absence of a buffer and an outer zone. This supports the previous idea that the logarithmic layer has its own autonomous dynamics. In particular, the results suggest that the mean velocity gradient and the wall-parallel scale of the largest eddies are determined by the height of the tallest momentum-transferring motions, implying that the very large-scale motions of wall-bounded flows are not an intrinsic part of logarithmic-layer dynamics. 60. Fast and Robust Certifiable Estimation of the Relative Pose Between Two Calibrated Cameras

Abstract

This work contributes an efficient algorithm to compute the Relative Pose problem (RPp) between calibrated cameras and certify the optimality of the solution, given a set of pair-wise feature correspondences affected by noise and probably corrupted by wrong matches. We propose a family of certifiers that is shown to increase the ratio of detected optimal solutions. This set of certifiers is incorporated into a fast essential matrix estimation pipeline that, given any initial guess for the RPp, refines it iteratively on the product space of 3D rotations and 2-sphere. In addition, this fast certifiable pipeline is integrated into a robust framework that combines Graduated Non-convexity and the Black-Rangarajan duality between robust functions and line processes. We proved through extensive experiments on synthetic and real data that the proposed framework provides a fast and robust relative pose estimation. Abstract

Following the suggestion from the Monte--Carlo experiments in Jim\'enez, J. of Turbul. 2020), that dipoles are as important to the dynamics of decaying two-dimensional turbulence as individual vortex cores, it is found that the kinetic energy of this flow is carried by elongated streams formed by the concatenation of dipoles. Vortices separate into a family of small fast-moving cores, and another family of larger slowly moving ones, which can be described as `frozen' into a slowly evolving `crystal'. The kinematics of both families are very different, and only the former is self-similar. The latter is responsible for most of the kinetic energy of the flow, and its vortices form the dipoles and the streams. Abstract

This paper analyses the turbulent energy cascade from the perspective of statistical mechanics, and relates inter-scale energy fluxes to statistical irreversibility and information-entropy production. The microscopical reversibility of the energy cascade is tested by constructing a reversible 3D turbulent system using a dynamic model for the sub-grid stresses. This system, when reversed in time, develops a sustained inverse cascade towards the large scales, evidencing that the characterisation of the inertial energy cascade must consider the possibility of an inverse regime. This experiment is used to study the origin of statistical irreversibility and the prevalence of direct over inverse energy cascades in isotropic turbulence. Statistical irreversibility, a property of statistical ensembles in phase space related to entropy production, is connected to the dynamics of the energy cascade in physical space by considering the space locality of the energy fluxes and their relation to the local structure of the flow. A mechanism to explain the probabilistic prevalence of direct energy transfer is proposed based the dynamics of the rate-of-strain tensor, which is identified as the most important source of statistical irreversibility in the energy cascade.

Abstract

In this paper we present the first fast optimality certifier for the non-minimal version of the Relative Pose problem for calibrated cameras from epipolar constraints. The proposed certifier is based on Lagrangian duality and relies on a novel closed-form expression for dual points. We also leverage an efficient solver that performs local optimization on the manifold of the original problem's non-convex domain. The optimality of the solution is then checked via our novel fast certifier. The extensive conducted experiments demonstrate that, despite its simplicity, this certifiable solver performs excellently on synthetic data, repeatedly attaining the (certified \textit{a posteriori}) optimal solution and shows a satisfactory performance on real data.

Abstract

This paper explores how far the scientific discovery process can be automated. Using the identification of causally significant flow structures in two-dimensional turbulence as an example, it probes how far the usual procedure of planning experiments to test hypotheses can be substituted by `blind' randomised experiments, and notes that the increased efficiency of computers is beginning to make such a `Monte-Carlo' approach practical in fluid mechanics. The process of data generation, classification and model creation is described in some detail, stressing the importance of validation and verification. Although the purpose of the paper is to explore the procedure, rather than to model two-dimensional turbulence, it is encouraging that the Monte Carlo process naturally leads to the consideration of vortex dipoles as building blocks of the flow, on a par with the more conventional individual vortex cores. Although not completely novel, this `spontaneous' discovery supports the claim that an important advantage of randomised experiments is to bypass researcher prejudice and alleviate paradigm lock. It is finally noted that the method can be extended to three-dimensional flows in practical times.

94. Momentum transfer by linearised eddies in channel flows

Abstract

The presence and structure of an Orr-like inviscid mechanism is studied in fully developed, large-scale turbulent channel flow. Orr-like `bursts' are defined by the relation between the amplitude and local tilting angle of the wall-normal velocity perturbations, and extracted by means of wavelet-based filters. They span the shear-dominated region of the flow, and their sizes and lifespans are proportional to the distance from the wall in the logarithmic layer, forming a self-similar eddy hierarchy consistent with Townsend's attached-eddy model. Except for their amplitude, which has to be determined nonlinearly, linearised transient growth represents their evolution reasonably well. Conditional analysis, based on wavelet-filtered and low-pass-filtered velocity fields, reveals that bursts of opposite sign pair side-by-side to form tilted quasi-streamwise rollers, which align along the streaks of the streamwise velocity with the right sign to reinforce them, and that they preferentially cluster along pre-existing streak inhomogeneities. On the other hand, temporal analysis shows that consecutive rollers do not form simultaneously, suggesting that they incrementally trigger each other. This picture is similar to that of the streak-vortex cycle of the buffer layer, and the properties of the bursts suggest that they are different manifestations of the well-known attached Q$_2$-Q$_4$ events of the Reynolds stress., Comment: 38 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

The local geometry of the parameter space of a quantum system is described by the quantum metric tensor and the Berry curvature, which are two fundamental objects that play a crucial role in understanding geometrical aspects of condensed matter physics. We consider classical integrable systems and report a new approach to obtain the classical analogs of the quantum metric tensor and the Berry curvature. An advantage of this approach is that it can be applied to a wide variety of classical systems corresponding to quantum systems with bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. Our approach arises from the semiclassical approximation of the Berry curvature and the quantum metric tensor in the Lagrangian formalism. We also exploit this semiclassical approximation to establish, for the first time, the relation between the quantum metric tensor and its classical counterpart. We illustrate and validate our approach by applying it to five systems: the generalized harmonic oscillator, the symmetric and linearly coupled harmonic oscillators, the singular Euclidean oscillator, and a spin-half particle in a magnetic field. Abstract

Depth cameras, typically in RGB-D configurations, are common devices in mobile robotic platforms given their appealing features: high frequency and resolution, low price and power requirements, among others. These sensors may come with significant, non-linear errors in the depth measurements that jeopardize robot tasks, like free-space detection, environment reconstruction or visual robot-human interaction. This paper presents a method to calibrate such systematic errors with the help of a second, more precise range sensor, in our case a radial laser scanner. In contrast to what it may seem at first, this does not mean a serious limitation in practice since these two sensors are often mounted jointly in many mobile robotic platforms, as they complement well each other. Moreover, the laser scanner can be used just for the calibration process and get rid of it after that. The main contributions of the paper are: i) the calibration is formulated from a probabilistic perspective through a Maximum Likelihood Estimation problem, and ii) the proposed method can be easily executed automatically by mobile robotic platforms. To validate the proposed approach we evaluated for both, local distortion of 3D planar reconstructions and global shifts in the measurements, obtaining considerably more accurate results. 97. Automatic Multi-Sensor Extrinsic Calibration for Mobile Robots

Abstract

In order to fuse measurements from multiple sensors mounted on a mobile robot, it is needed to express them in a common reference system through their relative spatial transformations. In this paper, we present a method to estimate the full 6DoF extrinsic calibration parameters of multiple heterogeneous sensors (Lidars, Depth and RGB cameras) suitable for automatic execution on a mobile robot. Our method computes the 2D calibration parameters (x, y, yaw) through a motion-based approach, while for the remaining 3 parameters (z, pitch, roll) it requires the observation of the ground plane for a short period of time. What set this proposal apart from others is that: i) all calibration parameters are initialized in closed form, and ii) the scale ambiguity inherent to motion estimation from a monocular camera is explicitly handled, enabling the combination of these sensors and metric ones (Lidars, stereo rigs, etc.) within the same optimization framework. %Additionally, outlier observations arising from local sensor drift are automatically detected and removed from the calibration process. We provide a formal definition of the problem, as well as of the contributed method, for which a C++ implementation has been made publicly available. The suitability of the method has been assessed in simulation an with real data from indoor and outdoor scenarios. Abstract

This paper briefly reviews the influence that the rapid evolution of computer power in the last decades has had on turbulence research. It is argued that it can be divided into three stages. In the earliest (`heroic') one, simulations were expensive and could at most be considered as substitutes for experiments. Later, as computers grew faster and some meaningful simulations could be performed overnight, it became practical to use them as (`routine') as tools to provide answers to specific theoretical questions. More recently, some turbulence simulations have become trivial, able to run in minutes, and it is possible to think of computers as `Monte Carlo' theory machines, which can be used to systematically pose a wide range of `random' theoretical questions, only to later evaluate which of them are interesting or useful. Although apparently wasteful, it is argued that this procedure has the advantage of being reasonably independence of received wisdom, and thus more able than human researchers to scape established paradigms. The rate of growth of computer power ensures that the interval between consecutive stages is about fifteen years. Rather than offering conclusions, the purpose of the paper is to stimulate discussion on whether machine- and human-generated theories can be considered comparable concepts, and on how the challenges and opportunities created by our new computer `colleagues' can be made to fit into the traditional research process.

Abstract

Lenalidomide is an immunomodulatory drug approved for maintenance treatment in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, and it has been shown to improve progression-free survival (PFS) and, in several studies, overall survival. Nevertheless, the impact of prolonged treatment with lenalidomide on the kinetics of minimal residual disease (MRD) and its prognostic impact have not been studied in depth. To obtain better knowledge in this regard, we retrospectively analyzed 139 patients who received lenalidomide maintenance in real-world clinical practice and whose MRD levels were observed during the treatment period by multiparametric flow cytometry or next-generation sequencing with a sensitivity of at least 10-4. Lenalidomide maintenance correlated with an increased depth of the disease response, with 38.1% of patients achieving maximal response during maintenance. Moreover, 34.3% of patients who were MRD positive after induction treatment achieved MRD-negative status during maintenance and ultimately had improved PFS. Sequential MRD assessments identified patients with progressively decreasing MRD levels who also had better PFS outcomes, compared with patients not showing a decreasing pattern of MRD. These results support the role of maintenance therapy, not only to sustain, but also to increase the depth of disease response with a PFS benefit. In addition, MRD monitoring during maintenance identifies patients with better prognosis and may help in their clinical management.
