Abstract

A model automotive exhaust catalyst, consisting of 2.25 wt% Pd supported on initially high-surface-area (88 m 2 /g) cerium???zirconium mixed oxide (Ce 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2), was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), following high-temperature (1150??C) redox aging. Spherical Pd particles with size varying from 30 to 80 nm in diameter were found to be embedded both within single grains and at interfaces between multiple grains of the mixed oxide. X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and microbeam electron diffraction show that these particles are pure Pd, with face-centeredcubic structure. These results, together with elemental distribution maps obtained by EDS imaging, provide detailed visualization of an encapsulation phenomenon previously reported on the basis of XRD and TGA measurements alone.

Abstract

Barium titanate thin films deposited on MgO (0 0 1) by RF magnetron sputtering are composed of two new superstructures Ba4Ti5O10and Ba4Ti4O11formed as epitaxial nanodomain structures. Due to the nanometre scale size of domains and the complexity of the structure in the film, the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique does not have the capability for the crystallographic structure determination of the two new superstructures. We used nanobeam electron diffraction to reconstruct the three-dimensional diffraction space and hence the symmetry of the new superstructures. Both Ba4Ti5O10and Ba4Ti4O11are monoclinic structures with a space group ofCm(b-unique axis). Ba4Ti5O10has a lattice parametera = 16.49 Å,b = 3.94 Å,c = 8.94 Å andβ = 103°, while Ba4Ti4O11hasa = 17.88 Å,b = 3.94 Å,c = 7.21 Å andβ = 98°. Atomic structural models for the two new superstructures were established by reconstructing the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images taken from the three major axes and refined by matching the simulated HRTEM images and calculated electron diffraction patterns with the experimental results. Abstract

Ab initio computations were conducted to study the structures, energetics and vibrations of the binary complex NH4+(H2O)n cluster ions at n = 0-5. Several structural isomers at n = 2-5 were observed, of which the isomer with a filled first solvation shell is lowest in energy at n = 4. Computations also predicted that, at n = 5, the lowest energy isomer has a four-membered ring with the second-shell H2O acting as a double-proton acceptor.

92. Discommensurate microstructures in phason-strained octagonal quasicrystal phases of Mo-Cr-Ni

Abstract

Phason-strained octagonal quasicrystal phases of Mo-Cr-Ni have been studied by electron diffraction and dark-field imaging. The shifting of some of the diffraction spots lowers the symmetry from eightfold to fourfold. Diffraction patterns of the orthogonal twofold axes show that the shifted spots are split along the fourfold axis. Discommensurations (DC’s) observed in dark-field images of split reflections are aligned perpendicular to the fourfold axis. We have found that the density of the DC’s in widely separated and adjacent regions may vary by more than 1 order of magnitude. The density of the DC’s is directly related to the separation of the splitting. The large difference in the density of DC’s in adjacent regions supports the interpretation that the DC’s in the Mo-Cr-Ni phases are due to the ordering of atomic species in the quasilattice. Our observations are consistent with some of the results of the two-dimensional octagonal random tiling model of Li, Park, and Widom.

93. Direct observation of domains and discommensurations in Mn-Si-Al octagonal quasicrystal by transmission electron microscopy

Abstract

Domains and discommensurations have been directly observed by transmission electron microscopy in some dark-field images using certain reflections in a Mn-Si-Al octagonal quasicrystal. The invisibility and visibility of domains and discommensurations separate the diffraction spots into basic and satellite reflections. The domains and discommensurations observed in satellite reflections are interpreted as due to the ordering of Si and Al atoms in the quasilattice of the quasicrystal. A simple model which gives satisfactory agreement with the experimental results is given.

Abstract

We report the twin-coupled multi-oriented domain structures in the epitaxial BZT20 (20%Zr) films grown on the (001) MgO substrate using pulsed-laser deposition. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the film consists of an epitaxial layer of pseudo-cubic perovskite structure and a nanopillar layer of multi-oriented twin domain structures near the surface. Four types of the twin domains were formed in the nanopillar layers by coherently joining their {111} with the epilayer and aligning their 〈110〉 directions parallel to the 〈110〉 axes of the epilayer. A non-uniform polarization switching behavior was observed due to the formation of such complex structure in the BZT20 films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: A family of stable single- and double-ring-like Ga n As n (3⩽ n ⩽14) clusters is given. The structures and properties of them are investigated using the density-functional theory with generalized gradient approximation. The transition of Ga n As n structural evolution from two- to three-dimension occurs at about the atom number 7. Single-ring is not stable when the cluster size n is larger than 6. Double-rings are energetically more favorable than single-rings. All double-ring Ga n As n clusters with n have high symmetry of D(n/2)d . The transition region of average binding energy and on-site charge is Ga6As6(b) and Ga8As8. The bonding characteristic of these rings is covalent. These clusters are all semiconductor-like. Abstract

In this work, an electroplated Ni material made from sulfuric acid-based plating solution has been studied. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique was used to study the stability of plated Ni at elevated temperatures. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to examine the microstructural changes of plated samples as a function of annealing temperature. Microhardness tests were performed to study the effects of the evolved microstructures on surface mechanical properties. The activation energy for the grain growth was determined by using isothermal kinetics analysis. In order to improve the performance of LIGA/MEMS components at high temperature, it is crucial to understand the grain coarsening processes of electroplated Ni materials at elevated temperature.
