Search

Understanding electrochemical interfaces at a microscopic level is essential for elucidating important electrochemical processes in electrocatalysis, batteries and corrosion. While \textit{ab initio} simulations have provided valuable insights into model systems, the high computational cost limits their use in tackling complex systems of relevance to practical applications. Machine learning potentials offer a solution, but their application in electrochemistry remains challenging due to the difficulty in treating the dielectric response of electronic conductors and insulators simultaneously. In this work, we propose a hybrid framework of machine learning potentials that is capable of simulating metal/electrolyte interfaces by unifying the interfacial dielectric response accounting for local electronic polarisation in electrolytes and non-local charge transfer in metal electrodes. We validate our method by reproducing the bell-shaped differential Helmholtz capacitance at the Pt(111)/electrolyte interface. Furthermore, we apply the machine learning potential to calculate the dielectric profile at the interface, providing new insights into electronic polarisation effects. Our work lays the foundation for atomistic modelling of complex, realistic electrochemical interfaces using machine learning potential at \textit{ab initio} accuracy.

As many Kagome metals, the topological superconductor AV$_3$Sb$_5$ with (A = K,Rb,Cs) hosts a charge density wave . A related chiral flux phase that breaks the time-reversal symmetry has been further theoretically predicted in these materials. The flux phase is associated with loop currents that produce ordered orbital magnetic moments, which would occur at the momentum points, $\bf M$, characterizing the charge-density wave state. Polarized neutron-diffraction experiments have been performed on an assembly of single crystals of ${\rm CsV_3Sb_5}$ to search for such orbital magnetic moments. No evidence for the existence of a three-dimensionally ordered moment is found at any temperature at the first ${\bf M_1}$=(1/2,0,0) point in the Brillouin zone within an excellent experimental uncertainty, ${\it i.e.}$ ${\bf m}=0 \pm 0.01\mu_B$ per vanadium atom. However, a hint to a magnetic orbital moment is found in the second Brillouin zone at {\bf M$_2$}=(1/2,1/2,0) at the detection limit of the experiment. Some loop currents patterns flowing ${\it only}$ on vanadium triangles are able to account for this finding suggesting an ordered orbital magnetic moment of, at most, $\sim 0.02 \pm 0.01\mu_B$ per vanadium triangle., Comment: 11 figures

Parametric array loudspeakers (PALs) are known for producing highly directional audio beams, a feat more challenging to achieve with conventional electro-dynamic loudspeakers (EDLs). Due to their intrinsic physical mechanisms, PALs hold promising potential for spatial audio applications such as virtual reality (VR). However, the feasibility of using an array of PALs for sound zone control (SZC) has remained unexplored, mainly due to the complexity of the nonlinear demodulation process inherent in PALs. Leveraging recent advancements in PAL modeling, this work proposes an optimization algorithm to achieve the acoustic contrast control (ACC) between two target areas using a PAL array. The performance and robustness of the proposed ACC-based SZC using PAL arrays are investigated through simulations, and the results are compared with those obtained using EDL arrays. The results show that the PAL array outperforms the EDL array in SZC performance and robustness at higher frequencies and lower signal-to-noise ratio, while being comparable under other conditions. This work paves the way for high-contrast acoustic control using PAL arrays.

We present optical photometry for the afterglow of GRB 221009A, in some respects the most extraordinary gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed. Good quality in the R-band light curve is obtained, covering 0.32-19.57 days since the Fermi-GBM trigger. We find that a weak bump emerges fromthe declining afterglow at $t \approx 11$ days; a supernova (SN) may be responsible. We use a smooth broken power-law and $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ model to fit the light curve. The best-fitting results reveal that the SN ejected a total mass of $M_\mathrm{ej} = 3.70 M_\odot$, a $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ mass of $M_\mathrm{Ni} = 0.23 M_\odot$, and a kinetic energy of $E_\mathrm{SN,K} = 2.35 \times 10^{52} \mathrm{erg}$. We also compare GRB 221009A with other GRB-SN events based on a GRB-associated SN sample, and find that only SN 2003lw and SN 2011kl can be obviously revealed in the afterglow of GRB 221009A by setting these objects at its distance. This suggests that a supernova (SN 2022xiw) is possibly obscured by the brighter afterglow emission from GRB 221009A.

Due to the rapid advancements in multimodal large language models, evaluating their multimodal mathematical capabilities continues to receive wide attention. Despite the datasets like MathVista proposed benchmarks for assessing mathematical capabilities in multimodal scenarios, there is still a lack of corresponding evaluation tools and datasets for fine-grained assessment in the context of K12 education in Chinese language. To systematically evaluate the capability of multimodal large models in solving Chinese multimodal mathematical problems, we propose a Chinese Multi-modal Math Skill Evaluation Benchmark, named CMMaTH, contraining 23k multimodal K12 math related questions, forming the largest Chinese multimodal mathematical problem benchmark to date. CMMaTH questions from elementary to high school levels, provide increased diversity in problem types, solution objectives, visual elements, detailed knowledge points, and standard solution annotations. We have constructed an open-source tool GradeGPT integrated with the CMMaTH dataset, facilitating stable, rapid, and cost-free model evaluation. Our data and code are available.

The electric resistivity is examined in the constrained Hilbert space of a doped Mott insulator, which is dictated by a non-Ioffe-Larkin composition rule due to the underlying mutual Chern-Simons topological gauge structure. In the low-temperature pseudogap phase, where holons remain condensed while spinons proliferate, the charge transport is governed by a chiral spinon excitation, comprising a bosonic spin-$1/2$ at the core of a supercurrent vortex. It leads to a vanishing resistivity with the "confinement" of the spinons in the superconducting phase but a low-$T$ divergence of the resistivity once the spinon confinement is disrupted by external magnetic fields. In the latter, the chiral spinons will generate a Hall number $n_H =$ doping concentration $\delta$ and a Nernst effect to signal an underlying long-range entanglement between the charge and spin degrees of freedom. Their presence is further reflected in thermodynamic quantities such as specific heat and spin susceptibility. Finally, in the high-temperature spin-disordered phase, it is shown that the holons exhibit a linear-$T$ resistivity by scattering with the spinons acting as free local moments, which generate randomized gauge fluxes as perceived by the charge degree of freedom., Comment: 6+6 pages, 6 figures

Novel states of matter arise in quantum materials due to strong interactions among electrons. A nematic phase breaks the point group symmetry of the crystal lattice and is known to emerge in correlated materials. Here we report the observation of an intra-unit-cell nematic order and signatures of Pomeranchuk instability in the Kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we reveal a stripe-like nematic order breaking the crystal rotational symmetry within the Kagome lattice itself. Moreover, we identify a set of van Hove singularities adhering to the Kagome layer electrons, which appear along one direction of the Brillouin zone while being annihilated along other high-symmetry directions, revealing a rotational symmetry breaking. Via detailed spectroscopic maps, we further observe an elliptical deformation of Fermi surface, which provides direct evidence for an electronically mediated nematic order. Our work not only bridges the gap between electronic nematicity and Kagome physics, but also sheds light on the potential mechanism for realizing symmetry-broken phases in correlated electron systems., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

We compute the structure of flux $h/(2e)$ vortices in a $d$-wave superconductor using a continuum SU(2) gauge theory of 2 flavors of charge $e$, SU(2)-fundamental Higgs bosons. Period-2 charge order is present near the vortex center. Upon coupling the electrons to the superconducting and charge order parameters, we find that the electronic local density of states does not have a zero-bias peak, in contrast to BCS theory. But there are sub-gap peaks at positive and negative bias, and these exhibit anti-phase periodic spatial modulations, as observed in scanning tunneling microscopy experiments in the underdoped cuprates (K. Matsuba et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 76, 063704 (2007))., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures

The present work concerns the detailed construction of a holographic model for a type-II s-wave superconductor defined on a 5-dimensional anisotropic rotating black hole. We examine the role of rotation and anisotropy on the properties of the superconductor model focusing on the condensate and the AC conductivity, for which we obtain closed formulas, using both analytical and numerical methods. The results reveal that the rotation is responsible for the appearance of a peak and for introducing an exponentially vanishing behavior in the high-frequency limit of the real component of the AC conductivity. Such a behavior aligns with that observed in high-temperature superconductor models and experiments, where the peak and vanishing behavior result from quasiparticle damping, suggesting a plausible relation between the rotation of a black hole and quasiparticle damping effects in a superconducting material. In addition, we provide a detailed construction of the vortex lattice presented in arXiv:2208.05988 and study its behavior as a function of an external uniform magnetic field. Once again, it is shown that the vortex lattice can be continuously deformed along with a change in the vortex population by virtue of the magnetic field, providing a promising avenue for holographically modeling the vortex lattice deformations observed in experimental superconducting materials. As an observed experimental effect, we describe both the vortex lattice deformation and the vortex population increment under the action of an external magnetic field in the LiFeAs type-II superconductor. In the recently discovered kagome superconductor AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs), the superconductivity is intertwined with an unconventional charge density wave order. Its pairing symmetry remains elusive owing to the lack of direct measurement of the superconducting gap in the momentum space. In this letter, utilizing laser-based ultra-high-resolution and low-temperature angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe anisotropic Cooper pairing in kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5. We detect a highly anisotropic superconducting gap structure with an anisotropy over 80% and the gap maximum along the V-V bond direction on a Fermi surface originated from the 3d-orbital electrons of the V kagome lattice. It is in stark contrast to the isotropic superconducting gap structure on the other Fermi surface that is occupied by Sb 5p-orbital electrons. Our observation of the anisotropic Cooper pairing in pristine CsV3Sb5 is fundamental for understanding intertwined orders in the ground state of kagome superconductors.

The detrimental impact of noise on sensing performance in quantum metrology has been widely recognized by researchers in the field. However, there are no explicit fundamental laws of physics stating that noise invariably weakens quantum metrology. We reveal that phase-covariant (PC) noise either degrades or remains neutral to sensing precision, whereas non-phase-covariant (NPC) noise can potentially enhance parameter estimation, surpassing even the ultimate precision limit achievable in the absence of noise. This implies that a non-Hermitian quantum sensor may outperform its Hermitian counterpart in terms of sensing performance. Strongly correlated electron systems with a kagome lattice can host abundant exotic quantum states such as superconductivity and spin/charge density waves (CDW) due to the complicated interactions between different degrees of freedoms in the framework of a unique two-dimensional geometrically frustrated lattice structure. Recently, successive orders of A-type antiferromagnetism (AFM), $2\times2\times2$ CDW and canted double-cone AFM have been manifested upon cooling in magnetic kagome FeGe. However, the mechanism of the CDW order and its interaction with magnetism are presently enigmatic at best. Here we investigate the evolution of CDW order with temperature across the spin canting transition in FeGe by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Refinements of its modulated structure are presented using the superspace approach. Interestingly, the superlattice reflections originating from CDW-induced long-range structural modulation become extremely weak after the system enters the canted AFM while a $2\times2$ CDW in the $ab$ plane persists as a long-range order demonstrated by strong electronic modulation in the d$I$/d$V$ map of scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We discovered a novel CDW order without long-range structural modulation in FeGe probably because of the competition between CDW and canted AFM in determining the underlying crystal structure. In addition, occupational modulations of Ge1 atoms located in the kagome plane and displacive modulations of all the atoms were extracted from the refinements, confirming the existence of Ge atom dimerization along the $c$ axis as the major distortion and indicating a dynamic transformation between different CDW domains., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures. A hallmark of unconventional superconductors is their complex electronic phase diagrams where "intertwined orders" of charge-spin-lattice degrees of freedom compete and coexist as in copper oxides and iron pnictides. While the electronic phase diagram of kagome lattice superconductor such as CsV3Sb5 also exhibits complex behavior involving coexisting and competing charge density wave order and superconductivity, much is unclear about the microscopic origin of superconductivity. Here, we study the vortex lattice (VL) in superconducting state of Cs(V0.86Ta0.14)3Sb5, where the Ta-doping suppresses charge order and enhances superconductivity. Using small-angle neutron scattering, a strictly bulk probe, we show that the VL exhibits a strikingly conventional behavior. This includes a triangular VL with a period consistent with 2e-pairing, a field dependent scattering intensity that follows a London model, and a temperature dependence consistent with a uniform superconducting gap expected for s-wave pairing. These results suggest that optimal bulk superconductivity in Cs(V1-xTax)3Sb5 arises from a conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer electron-lattice coupling, different from spin fluctuation mediated unconventional copper and iron based superconductors., Comment: Multiple revisions

Mrk 501 is a prototypical high-synchrotron-peaked blazar (HBL) and serves as one of the primary targets for the {\it Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer} ({\it IXPE}). In this study, we report X-ray polarization measurements of Mrk 501 based on six {\it IXPE} observations. The detection of X-ray polarization at a confidence level exceeding 99\% is achieved in four out of the six observations conducted across the entire energy range (2--8 keV) of {\it IXPE}. The maximum polarization degree ($\Pi_{\rm X}$) is measured to be $15.8\%\pm2.8\%$, accompanied by a polarization angle ($\psi_{\rm X}$) of $98.0\deg\pm5.1\deg$ at a confidence level of $5.6 \sigma$. During the remaining two observations, only an upper limit of $\Pi_{\rm X}<$12\% could be derived at the 99\% confidence level. No temporal variability in polarization is observed throughout all six {\it IXPE} observations for Mrk 501. A discernible trend of energy-dependent variation in the polarization degree is detected in optical spectropolarimetry; however, no analogous indication is observed in $\Pi_{\rm X}$. The chromatic behavior of $\Pi$ and the consistent values of $\psi$ across different frequencies from X-rays to radio waves, along with the agreement between $\psi$ and jet position angle, strongly support the interpretation of the energy-stratified model with shock-accelerated particles in the jet of Mrk 501. Superposed photon-added and photon-subtracted squeezed-vacuum states exhibit sub-Planck phase-space structures and metrological potential similar to the original compass states (superposition of four coherent states), but are more closely tied to modern experiments. Here, we observe that these compasslike states are highly susceptible to loss of quantum coherence when placed in contact with a thermal reservoir; that is, the interaction with the thermal reservoir causes decoherence, which progressively suppresses the capacity of these states to exhibit interference traits. We focus on the sub-Planck structures of these states and find that decoherence effects on these features are stronger with increasing the average thermal photon number of the reservoir, the squeezing parameter, or the quantity of added (or subtracted) photons to the squeezed-vacuum states. Furthermore, we observe that the sub-Planck structures of the photon-subtracted case survive comparatively longer in the thermal reservoir than their counterparts in the photon-added case, and prolonged contact with the thermal reservoir converts these compasslike states into a classical state., Comment: 14 pages, and 4 figures

Charge density waves (CDWs) appear in numerous condensed matter platforms, ranging from high-Tc superconductors to quantum Hall systems. Despite such ubiquity, there has been a lack of direct experimental study on boundary states that can uniquely stem from the charge order. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy, we directly visualize the bulk and boundary phenomenology of CDW in a topological material, Ta2Se8I. Below the transition temperature (TCDW = 260 K), tunneling spectra on an atomically resolved lattice reveal a large insulating gap in the bulk and on the surface, exceeding 500 meV, surpassing predictions from standard weakly-coupled mean-field theory. Spectroscopic imaging confirms the presence of CDW, with LDOS maxima at the conduction band corresponding to the LDOS minima at the valence band, thus revealing a {\pi} phase difference in the respective CDW order. Concomitantly, at a monolayer step edge, we detect an in-gap boundary mode with modulations along the edge that match the CDW wavevector along the edge. Intriguingly, the phase of the edge state modulation shifts by {\pi} within the charge order gap, connecting the fully gapped bulk (and surface) conduction and valence bands via a smooth energy-phase relation. This bears similarity to the topological spectral flow of edge modes, where the boundary modes bridge the gapped bulk modes in energy and momentum magnitude but in Ta2Se8I, the connectivity distinctly occurs in energy and momentum phase. Notably, our temperature-dependent measurements indicate a vanishing of the insulating gap and the in-gap edge state above TCDW, suggesting their direct relation to CDW. Starting from the molecular picture for the $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ resonances, which are dynamically generated by the interaction of coupled channels, the most important of which are the $D^*K$ for the $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $DK^*$ for the $D_{s1}(2536)$, we evaluate the ratio of decay widths for the $\bar{B}_s^0 \to D_{s1}(2460)^+ K^-$ and $\bar{B}_s^0 \to D_{s1}(2536)^+ K^-$ decays, the latter of which has been recently investigated by the LHCb collaboration, and we obtain a ratio of the order of unity. The present results should provide an incentive for the related decay into the $D_{s1}(2460)$ resonance to be performed, which would provide valuable information on the nature of these two resonances., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables; V2: discussions added, references added, version to appear in Eur.Phys.J.C

Topology and interactions are foundational concepts in the modern understanding of quantum matter. Their nexus yields three significant research directions: competition between distinct interactions, as in the multiple intertwined phases, interplay between interactions and topology that drives the phenomena in twisted layered materials and topological magnets, and the coalescence of multiple topological orders to generate distinct novel phases. The first two examples have grown into major areas of research, while the last example remains mostly untouched, mainly because of the lack of a material platform for experimental studies. Here, using tunneling microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy, and theoretical analysis, we unveil a "hybrid" and yet novel topological phase of matter in the simple elemental solid arsenic. Through a unique bulk-surface-edge correspondence, we uncover that arsenic features a conjoined strong and higher-order topology, stabilizing a hybrid topological phase. While momentum-space spectroscopy measurements show signs of topological surface states, real-space microscopy measurements unravel a unique geometry of topology-induced step edge conduction channels revealed on various forms of natural nanostructures on the surface. Using theoretical models, we show that the existence of gapless step edge states in arsenic relies on the simultaneous presence of both a nontrivial strong Z2 invariant and a nontrivial higher-order topological invariant, providing experimental evidence for hybrid topology and its realization in a single crystal. Topology and correlations are fundamental concepts in modern physics, but their simultaneous occurrence within a single quantum phase is exceptionally rare. In this study, we present the discovery of such a phase of matter in Ta2Pd3Te5, a semimetal where the Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes leads to the spontaneous formation of excitonic bound states below T=100 K. Our spectroscopy unveils the development of an insulating gap stemming from the condensation of these excitons, thus giving rise to a highly sought-after correlated quantum phase known as the excitonic insulator. Remarkably, our scanning tunneling microscopy measurements reveal the presence of gapless boundary modes in the excitonic insulator state. Their magnetic field response and our theoretical calculations suggest a topological origin of these modes, rendering Ta2Pd3Te5 as the first experimentally identified topological excitonic insulator in a three-dimensional material not masked by any structural phase transition. Furthermore, our study uncovers a secondary excitonic instability below T=5 K, which differs from the primary one in having finite momentum. We observe unprecedented tunability of its wavevector by an external magnetic field. These findings unlock a frontier in the study of novel correlated topological phases of matter and their tunability.

Electronic topological phases are renowned for their unique properties, where conducting surface states exist on the boundary of an insulating three-dimensional bulk. While the transport response of the surface states has been extensively studied, the response of the topological hinge modes remains elusive. Here, we investigate a layered topological insulator $\alpha$-Bi$_4$Br$_4$, and provide the first evidence for quantum transport in gapless topological hinge states existing within the insulating bulk and surface energy gaps. Our magnetoresistance measurements reveal pronounced h/e periodic (where h denotes Planck's constant and e represents the electron charge) Aharonov-Bohm oscillation. The observed periodicity, which directly reflects the enclosed area of phase-coherent electron propagation, matches the area enclosed by the sample hinges, providing compelling evidence for the quantum interference of electrons circumnavigating around the hinges. Notably, the h/e oscillations evolve as a function of magnetic field orientation, following the interference paths along the hinge modes that are allowed by topology and symmetry, and in agreement with the locations of the hinge modes according to our scanning tunneling microscopy images. Remarkably, this demonstration of quantum transport in a topological insulator can be achieved using a flake geometry and we show that it remains robust even at elevated temperatures. Quantum materials whose atoms are arranged on a lattice of corner-sharing triangles, $\textit{i.e.}$, the kagome lattice, have recently emerged as a captivating platform for investigating exotic correlated and topological electronic phenomena. Here, we combine ultra-low temperature angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations to reveal the fascinating electronic structure of the bilayer-distorted kagome material $\textit{Ln}$Ti${_3}$Bi${_4}$, where $\textit{Ln}$ stands for Nd and Yb. Distinct from other kagome materials, $\textit{Ln}$Ti${_3}$Bi${_4}$ exhibits two-fold, rather than six-fold, symmetries, stemming from the distorted kagome lattice, which leads to a unique electronic structure. Combining experiment and theory we map out the electronic structure and discover double flat bands as well as multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs), with one VHS exhibiting higher-order characteristics near the Fermi level. Notably, in the magnetic version NdTi${_3}$Bi${_4}$, the ultra-low base temperature ARPES measurements unveil an unconventional band splitting in the band dispersions which is induced by the ferromagnetic ordering. These findings reveal the potential of bilayer-distorted kagome metals $\textit{Ln}$Ti${_3}$Bi${_4}$ as a promising platform for exploring novel emergent phases of matter at the intersection of strong correlation and magnetism.
