Abstract Background Haemodialysis can negatively impact quality of life and mental health. Arts-based interventions used successfully in other settings to improve health and well-being, could help address the impact of haemodialysis. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of an arts-based intervention for patients receiving haemodialysis. Methods A parallel convergent mixed-methods design was used, including a pilot cluster RCT and qualitative process evaluation. Phase 1 evaluated recruitment and retention rates through a pilot cluster RCT at a single haemodialysis unit in Northern Ireland. Participants included patients who received haemodialysis for ESKD, were over the age of 18 and had the capacity to consent. These participants were randomised to the intervention or control group according to their haemodialysis shift. The intervention involved six one-hour, one-to-one facilitated arts sessions during haemodialysis. Phase 2 explored intervention and trial acceptability through a qualitative process evaluation using semi-structured interviews based on the RE-AIM framework. Participants included 13 patients who participated in phase 1 of the study, including 9 participants from the experimental group and four participants from the control group, and nine healthcare professionals who were present on the unit during implementation. Results Out of 122 outpatient haemodialysis patients, 94 were assessed as eligible for participation. Twenty-four participants were randomised, meaning 80% of the target sample size was recruited and the attrition rate at 3 months was 12.5% (n = 3). Participants viewed the arts as more accessible and enjoyable than anticipated following implementation. All participants who started the intervention (n = 11) completed the full six sessions. Qualitative benefits of the intervention suggest improvements in mental well-being. Patient choice and facilitation were important factors for successful implementation. Conclusion An arts-based intervention for patients receiving haemodialysis is acceptable for both patients and healthcare professionals, and a definitive trial is feasible. The intervention may help improve mental-wellbeing in patients receiving haemodialysis, but this requires further investigation in a definitive trial. Production of passion fruit (Passiflora sp.) via cuttings is a way to eliminate genetic variation in the crop and also results in a faster establishment time. This could aid producers in increasing production efficiency while maintaining genetic lines. The objective of this research was to evaluate ease of rooting and determine the optimal auxin source for seven species of passion fruit. Semihardwood two-node cuttings were taken from the middle of the parent vine, and auxin treatments were applied to the basal end of the cutting. The cuttings were then stuck to a depth of 1 inch on 20 Aug. 2019. Treatments included three auxin sources and seven passion fruit species. Treatments were set up as a randomized complete block design blocking on species, with 10 single-plant replications per treatment. Data were collected 30 d after sticking cuttings and included percent rooted, total root number, average root length (of the three longest roots, measured in centimeters), root quality (0–5 scale, with 0 = dead and 5 = healthy, vigorous root system), root dry weight (measured in grams), and percent callus. Results showed that passion fruit cuttings receiving a hormone treatment had significantly positive effects on rooting responses, such as increased number, length, quality, and dry weight of roots. Blue passionflower (P. caerulea) was the only species in which hormone treatment did not increase rooting compared with the control. The use of hormone to aid in cutting propagation of passion fruit is recommended, depending on the species being propagated.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) are mediators in the development of many inflammatory diseases. To demonstrate that macrophages take up and respond to thermosensitive nanoparticle drug carriers, we synthesized PEGylated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate) particles cross-linked with degradable disulfide (N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine) (NGPEGSS). An anti-inflammatory peptide (KAFAK) was loaded and released from the thermosensitive nanoparticles and shown to suppress levels of TNF-α and IL-6 production in macrophages. Cellular uptake of fluorescent, thermosensitive, and degradable nanoparticles and therapeutic efficacy of free KAFAK peptide compared to that of KAFAK loaded in PEGylated degradable thermosensitive nanoparticles were examined. The data suggests that the degradable, thermosensitive nanoparticles loaded with KAFAK may be an effective tool to treat inflammatory diseases.

Use of foliar auxin applications are increasing in the nursery and greenhouse industry. However, previous research has shown that insufficient auxin is absorbed or translocated to the site of action when foliar auxin applications are used. It is theorized that adding surfactants to foliar applications of auxin may help with the absorption and translocation of auxin to the site of action. Research was conducted to determine whether adding surfactants to one-time foliar applications of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) would be as effective as the current industry standard, the basal quick-dip. Terminal, semi-hardwood cuttings of Red Cascade™ miniature climbing rose (Rosa ‘MOORcap’), common camellia (Camellia japonica) and ‘Southern Charm’ magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Southern Charm’) were sprayed to the drip point using Hortus IBA Water Soluble Salts™ at concentrations of 0 ppm, 50 ppm, 75 ppm, or 100 ppm for rose cuttings or 0 ppm, 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, or 1500 ppm IBA for camellia or magnolia. To serve as an industry control, the basal end of cuttings was immersed for 3-s in a solution of either 250 ppm, 4000 ppm or 2500 ppm for rose, camellia, or magnolia, respectively. A foliar application of 1500 ppm after sticking was as effective as the basal quick-dip for cuttings of ‘Southern Charm’, while other spray treatments were less effective. A basal quick-dip was more effective than a foliar spray for rooting cuttings of camellia. Auxin rate had no impact on rooting of Red Cascade™ miniature rose. The goal of commercial plant propagation is to produce high-quality rooted cuttings as quickly as possible. Plant propagation places a large demand on labor within the nursery industry, with one recent report being that labor accounts for >50% of a nursery’s budget. Our results from this trial affirm the results reported by similar trials into foliar applications of auxin suggests that the benefits of foliar applications are species dependent Further work is warranted on examining other auxin and surfactant formulations.

Når et sted skal utvikles, er kunnskap om lokalbefolkningens ønsker, innspill og behov avgjørende for både god planlegging og gjennomføring. I økende grad ser vi at kommunale myndigheter, planleggere, urbanister og arkitekter er opptatt av å få tak i folks stemmer utover den lovpålagte medvirkningen. Samtidig mangler viktige aktører både kompetanse og metoder for å kunne nyttiggjøre seg av med­virkningsinnspill. Hvordan kan folks personlige historier og refleksjoner bli en viktig del av kunnskaps­grunnlaget for en stedsutviklingsprosess og hvordan får vi tak i folks mangfoldige erfaringer og menings­verden på en effektiv og ivaretagende måte? Vi har gjennom flere år med aksjonsforskning på barn og unges medvirkning i by- og stedsutviklingsprosesser, utviklet en kombinert tegneøvelse, dia­log­verktøy og læringsintervensjon vi kaller «splotting». Her tar vi utgangspunkt i det enkle spørsmålet: Hvor har du det godt? Metoden er testet og utviklet i samarbeid med blant andre lokal ungdom i Oslo og landskaps­arkitektstudenter fra NMBU, og gir innsikt i steders betydning for de menneskene det angår uten bruk av forutbestemte kategorier og såkalte «forbildefeller». Splotting er spesielt egnet som verktøy i dialogbaserte medvirkningsprosesser innenfor by- og stedsutvikling med fokus på utforming av det off­entlige rom som sosial arena, blant annet innenfor fag som arkitektur, design og sosialantropologi. Ut­fordringen har vært å sikre systematisk dokumentasjon og oversetting av folks refleksjoner til plan­tegning og formgivning. Metoden har slik store utviklingsmuligheter, og kan også brukes transdisiplinært i samarbeid med fagfelt som kunst og kultur, folkehelse og innenfor organisasjonsutvikling i offentlig sektor.

Arts engagement is a health-related behavior that may be influenced by social inequalities. While the COVID-19 pandemic provided new opportunities for some people to engage in the arts, it might have created barriers for others. We aimed to examine whether there was social patterning in home-based arts engagement during the pandemic in the United States, and whether predictors of engagement differed according to the type of arts activity. We included 4,731 adults who participated in the United States COVID-19 Social Study between April and July 2020. Three types of home-based arts engagement were considered: reading for pleasure, arts or crafts activities, and digital arts activities. Using logistic regression models, we tested cross-sectional associations between a broad range of demographic, socioeconomic, psychosocial, and health-related factors as well as adverse events and worries during lockdown and each type of arts engagement. The factors most strongly associated with all three types of arts engagement were social support, social network size, age, race/ethnicity, keyworker status, and experiencing physical or psychological abuse during the pandemic. However, most socioeconomic and health-related factors were not associated with arts engagement, including household income and mental and physical health problems. Overall, our findings indicate that the social gradient in arts engagement was reduced in the first 4 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Given the health benefits of arts engagement, the potential diversification of arts audiences during the pandemic is promising for both population-level health and wellbeing and the future of the arts and cultural sector. The aim of this survey was to evaluate treatment satisfaction and QoL in patients treated with fingolimod in everyday clinical practice in France. Methods: Neurologists treating MS in France were invited to participate in the survey by telephone. Each physician was expected to recruit up to six patients with RRMS currently being treated with fingolimod. Enrolled patients were asked to complete the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM), the 3-level 5-dimension EuroQoL instrument, as well as specific questions on change in QoL since starting fingolimod. Factors associated with the TSQM score were evaluated using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Two hundred and fourteen patients were recruited by 54 neurologists. The mean age of the patients was 41.6±10.0 years, and 73.4% of them were women. During the hospitalization for initiation of fingolimod treatment, 70.1% of patients had received information on MS, 76.6% had received information on fingolimod, and 20.7% had participated in a therapeutic education program. The two variables with the strongest associations with high TSQM scores (≥75) were a positive perception of initial hospitalization (hazard ratio: 10.27) and receiving information on MS during hospitalization (hazard ratio: 5.70). The mean EQ-visual analog scale score was 71.6±16.8. The mean EQ-visual analog scale score was significantly higher in patients satisfied with their treatment (75.8±15.2) compared to those unsatisfied with treatment (66.6±17.2). The proportion of patients who reported an improvement in their capacity to plan for the future was higher in satisfied (72.6%) than in unsatisfied patients (49.5%). Conclusion: The majority of patients treated with fingolimod are satisfied with their treatment. Treatment satisfaction is associated with better self-rated QoL and an improvement of QoL since starting treatment.
