The goal of the present study was to determine the properties of the somatosensory stimulus that alter its temporal coupling to body sway. Six standing subjects were tested while touching a metal plate positioned either directly in front of or lateral to the subject. In each condition, the plate moved 4 mm at 0.2 Hz in either the medial-lateral (ML) or anterior-posterior direction (AP). The results showed that coupling between body sway and touch plate movement was strongest when the touch plate moved in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the arm. Coupling strength was weaker when the touch plate moved perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the arm. The results consistently show that a radial expansion stimulus was more effective than a lamellar-type stimulus at the fingertip. Moreover, somatosensory information from a surface is interpreted in terms of the orientation of the contact limb and the potential degrees of freedom available through its movement. The propositions that the senses are separate and that the global array may be sufficient for adequate perception are questioned. There is evidence that certain tasks may be primarily 'input-driven,' but these are a special case along the behavioral continuum. Many tasks involve sensory information that is ambiguous, and other sources of information may be required for adequate perception.

Maintaining upright bipedal posture requires a control system that continually adapts to changing environmental conditions, such as different support surfaces. Behavioral changes associated with different support surfaces, such as the predominance of an ankle or hip strategy, is considered to reflect a change in the control strategy. However, tracing such behavioral changes to a specific component in a closed loop control system is challenging. Here we used the joint input-output (JIO) method of closed-loop system identification to identify the musculoskeletal and neural feedback components of the human postural control loop. The goal was to establish changes in the control loop corresponding to behavioral changes observed on different support surfaces. Subjects were simultaneously perturbed by two independent mechanical and two independent sensory perturbations while standing on a normal or short support surface. The results show a dramatic phase reversal between visual input and body kinematics due to the change in surface condition from trunk leads legs to legs lead trunk with increasing frequency of the visual perturbation. Through decomposition of the control loop, we found that behavioral change is not necessarily due to a change in control strategy, but in the case of different support surfaces, is linked to changes in properties of the plant. The JIO method is an important tool to identify the contribution of specific components within a closed loop control system to overall postural behavior and may be useful to devise better treatment of balance disorders. Afundamental issue in motor control is how to determine the task goals for a given behavior. Here, we address this question by separately identifying the musculoskeletal and feedback components of the human postural control loop. Eighteen subjects were perturbed by two mechanical perturbations (gentle pulling from behind at waist and shoulder levels) and one sensory perturbation (movement of a virtual visual scene). Body kinematics was described by the leg and trunk segment angles in the sagittal plane. Muscle activations were described by ankle and hip EMG signals, with each EMG signal computed as a weighted sum of rectified EMG signals from multiple muscles at the given joint. The mechanical perturbations were used to identify feedback, defined as the mapping from the two segment angles to the two EMGsignals. The sensory perturbation was used to estimate parameters in a mechanistic model of the plant, defined as the mapping from the two EMG signals to the two segment angles. Using the plant model and optimal control theory, we compared identified feedback to optimal feedback for a range of cost functions. Identified feedback was similar to feedback that stabilizes upright stance with nearminimum muscle activation, but was not consistent with feedback that substantially increases muscle activation to reduce movements of the body's center of mass or center of pressure. The results suggest that the common assumption of reducing sway may not apply to musculoskeletal systems that are inherently unstable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
