Abstract

This paper describes design and construction of a noise meter, which measures sound pressure level. The device can be set either for weighting filter A or for weighting filter C considering the characteristics of human hearing. The device also allows two modes, Fast and Slow, depending on the rate of changes of sound pressure level. It is possible to send measured data to a PC through a measuring application. The noise meter can be controlled by buttons or by voice commands.

Abstract

The thesis draws from the examples of the knowledge of two time periods - the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era - to discuss the claims of the constructivist school of the sociology of knowledge. The first part provides a detailed account of the views of the key constructivist figures Ludwik Fleck, David Bloor, and the anthropologist of knowledge Yehuda Elkana. The following chapter examines the main characteristics and dynamics of the medieval religious discourse with the use of Elkana's concept of images of knowledge. The next chapter provides an account of the key period of Early Modern science and shows the rise of the empirical and rational paradigm and the introduction of scientific methods, as well as the broader social context of this process. The changes in the hierarchy of knowledge are primarily demonstrated with the examples of the English natural philosophers and society during the Age of Restoration. Special attention is devoted to sources of knowledge and the methods of their legitimization and verification during both periods, in addition to an examination, based on the Strong program, of the societal roots and factors determining or influencing that knowledge. Abstract

This diploma thesis is dedicated to acquisitions of companies and analyses their tax aspect under the laws of the Czech Republic. From taxation aspects point of view the thesis also focuses on commercial and accounting impacts of relevant acquisitions. The main objective of the thesis is to identify, quantify and qualitatively assess tax implications for parties participating within the acquisitions. The thesis further aims at identification of legal forms of acquisitions in the Czech law system, the accounting analysis of the acquisition alternatives and analysis of court's practice relevant from taxation point of view. These sub-objectives also define to certain extent, field for analysis and assessment of the tax implications of particular acquisition structures.

76. UNDERDETERMINATION AND MODELS IN BIOLOGY.

Abstract

Since the early 20th century underdetermination has been one of the most contentious problems in the philosophy of science. In this article I relate the underdetermination problem to models in biology and defend two main lines of argument: First, the use of models in this discipline lends strong support to the underdetermination thesis. Second, models and theories in biology are not determined strictly by the logic of representation of the studied phenomena, but also by other constraints such as research traditions, backgrounds of the scientists, aims of the research and available technology. Convincing evidence for the existence of underdetermination in biology, where models abound, comes both from the fact that for a natural phenomenon we can create a number of candidate models but also from the fact that we do not have a universal rule that would adjudicate among them.
