Abstract: No presente artigo, apresentamos cinco textos escritos pelo filósofo e político francês Jean Jaurès entre 1909 e 1911 onde aborda questões relativas à diversidade cultural e linguística da França e, mais especificamente, da região sul. O primeiro artigo, intitulado Método Comparatista, oferece uma reflexão sobre as possibilidades de compreender outras línguas românicas pela população meridional habituada a perceber os contrastes entre o francês (língua nacional) e o languedociano e o provençal (variedades locais de occitano). O segundo (Civilização camponesa), o terceiro (Cultura camponesa) e o quarto (Poesia meridional e camponeses) problematizam, de forma complementária, o impacto da literatura local sobre a cultura popular. Abstract: New parallel architectures which aim at combining advantages of both Shared Memory (SM) and Distributed Memory (DM) architectures are emerging. The KSR1 machine is one of them. Although the parallel DBMS DBS3 runs on a shared memory machine, it uses a distributed computational model during query compilation. This feature makes it particularly well suited for studying the KSR1 approach for database applications. The objective of this paper is therefore to study the impact of the KSR1 architecture on the performance of DBS3, using some of the queries of the Wisconsin benchmark.

Abstract: Este articulo propone innovar el funcionamiento de los conjuntos musicales y orquestas a través la práctica de una pedagogía de grupo. A continuación se presenta la descripción de una experiencia pedagógica realizada con un conjunto instrumental de niños en una escuela de música en Francia. Esta experiencia es considerada como una aplicación de los resultados de una tesis doctoral en didáctica musical. Los análisis de cursos filmados muestran que las interacciones verbales y no-verbales, instauradas y gestionadas por el profesor en un grupo de aprendizaje, conllevan a los estudiantes a participar activamente en la construcción de sus saberes musicales gracias a la reflexión, coevaluación y colaboración. Los ensayos de conjuntos musicales y orquestas podrían así convertirse en verdaderas situaciones didácticas fundadas sobre un aprendizaje colaborativo para permitir a los instrumentistas apropiarse otros saberes musicales diferentes de “tocar en grupo”.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD) are at risk of suicide. Sleep and circadian rhythm alterations are widely recognized as core symptoms of major depressive disorder and are associated with suicidal ideation. Thus, sleep and circadian rhythm alterations may be targeted to prevent suicide.Methods: Patients were recruited from a prospective cohort of the French network of TRD expert centers. Mood, sleep and circadian rhythms were assessed at baseline; suicidal risk was assessed both at baseline and during a one-year follow-up with standardized subjective questionnaires.Results: Excessive daytime sleepiness (adjusted odds ratio aOR = 1.7(1-3.3), p = 0.04) and daytime dysfunction (aOR = 1.81(1.16-2.81), p = 0.0085) increased the risk of suicidal thoughts over the one-year follow-up period in patients with TRD after adjustment on age, gender, depression, trauma, anxiety, impulsivity, current daily tobacco smoking and body mass index. Hypnotics intake is associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideation at one-year follow-up after the same adjustments (OR = 0.73(0.56-0.95), p = 0.019). Other associations between sleep quality or circadian rhythms and suicidal ideations at either baseline or one year did not remain significant in multivariate analyses after the same adjustments.Limitations: Sleep assessments were based on self-reported questionnaires rather than objective measures.Conclusions: Daytime sleepiness and dysfunction are predictors of suicidal ideations, whereas hypnotics intake is associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideations. Diurnal symptoms of sleep disturbances are therefore red flags to target for preventing suicide in depressed patients, and hypnotics seem efficient in preventing suicide for patients with TRD.

Abstract: International audience; Current trends in the aerospace industry for the digitization of data, tools, and services call for novel solutions that can keep track of the latest technological advancements. Moreover, the increasing drive toward model-based approaches imposes the use of models for the development of complex systems, such as satellites. New types of methods and tools are needed in order to manage the still-growing complexity of embedded systems and their corresponding models. This paper addresses issues related to space systems (in-service) operations and proposes a multimodel approach to address them. The multimodel approach aims at facilitating the task of operational diagnosis by creating a monitoring and diagnosis-dedicated system model derived from existing system design (architecture, functional behavior, and safety) models. The purpose of the diagnosis-dedicated model is to enable the codesign of the system and its diagnosis tools in order to improve the performance of diagnosis activities and the system’s availability. This paper demonstrates the interests of the suggested approach with regard to the limitations of current practices.

Abstract: International audience; Objective: To establish international recommendations for the management of spastic equinovarus foot deformity. Design: Delphi method. Setting: International study. Participants: A total of 24 international experts (N=24) in neuro-orthopedic deformities, from different specialties (Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physicians, neurologists, geriatricians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons). Interventions: Experts answered 3 rounds of questions related to important aspects of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of spastic equinovarus foot deformity. Main Outcome Measures: A consensus was established when at least 80% of experts agreed on a statement Results: A total of 52 items reached consensus. Experts recommend assessing effect of the deformity on functional activities before treatment. Before treatment, it is crucial to differentiate spastic muscle overactivity from soft tissue contractures, identify which muscles are involved in the deformity, and evaluate the activity of antagonist muscles. Motor nerve blocks, 2-dimensional video analysis, and radiologic examinations are often required to complement a clinical examination. The treatment of equinovarus foot depends on the correctability of the deformity and the patient's ability to stand or walk. The preoperative assessment should include an interdisciplinary consultation that must finalize a formal agreement between physicians and the patient, which will define personalized attainable goals before surgery. Conclusion: The establishment of guidelines on managing equinovarus foot will help physicians and surgeons, specialists, and nonspecialists to diagnoses and assess the deformity and direct patients to a network of experts to optimize patient functional recovery and improve their autonomy.

Abstract: The second-order cone (SOC) is a class of simple convex cones and optimizing over them can be done more efficiently than with semidefinite programming. It is interesting both in theory and in practice to investigate which convex cones admit a representation using SOCs, given that they have a strong expressive ability. In this paper, we prove constructively that the cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC) admits a SOC representation. Based on this, we give a new algorithm for unconstrained polynomial optimization via SOC programming. We also provide a hybrid numeric-symbolic scheme which combines the numerical procedure with a rounding-projection algorithm to obtain exact nonnegativity certificates. Abstract: International audience; Because of the formation of specific antibodies to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leading to life-threatening side effects, there is an increasing need to develop alternatives to treatments and diagnostic methods based on PEGylated copolymers. Block copolymers comprising a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) segment can be used for the design of such vectors without any PEG block. As an example, a poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP) copolymer with controlled composition and molar mass is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Mixing this copolymer with lanthanide cations (Gd3+, Eu3+, Y3+) leads to the formation of hybrid polyion complexes with increased stability, preventing the lanthanide cytotoxicity and in vitro cell penetration. These new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when intravenously administered into mice. No leaching of gadolinium ions is detected from such hybrid complexes.

Abstract: This article introduces new multiplicative updates for nonnegative matrix factorization with the $\beta$-divergence and sparse regularization of one of the two factors (say, the activation matrix). It is well known that the norm of the other factor (the dictionary matrix) needs to be controlled in order to avoid an ill-posed formulation. Standard practice consists in constraining the columns of the dictionary to have unit norm, which leads to a nontrivial optimization problem. Our approach leverages a reparametrization of the original problem into the optimization of an equivalent scale-invariant objective function. From there, we derive block-descent majorization-minimization algorithms that result in simple multiplicative updates for either $\ell_{1}$-regularization or the more "aggressive" log-regularization. In contrast with other state-of-the-art methods, our algorithms are universal in the sense that they can be applied to any $\beta$-divergence (i.e., any value of $\beta$) and that they come with convergence guarantees. We report numerical comparisons with existing heuristic and Lagrangian methods using various datasets: face images, an audio spectrogram, hyperspectral data, and song play counts. We show that our methods obtain solutions of similar quality at convergence (similar objective values) but with significantly reduced CPU times.

Abstract: Self-organisation is the spontaneous emergence of spatio-temporal structures and patterns from the interaction of smaller individual units. Examples are found across many scales in very different systems and scientific disciplines, from physics, materials science and robotics to biology, geophysics andastronomy. Recent research has highlighted how self-organisation can be both mediated and controlled by confinement. Confinement is an action over a system that limits its units’ translational and rotational degrees of freedom, thus also influencing the system’s phase space probability density; it can functionas either a catalyst or inhibitor of self-organisation. Confinement can then become a means to actively steer the emergence or suppression of collective phenomena in space and time. Here, to provide a common framework and perspective for future research, we examine the role of confinement in the self-organisation of soft-matter systems and identify overarching scientific challenges that need to be addressed to harness its full scientific and technological potential in soft matter and related fields.By drawing analogies with other disciplines, this framework will accelerate a common deeper understanding of self-organisation and trigger the development of innovative strategies to steer it using confinement, with impact on, e.g., the design of smarter materials, tissue engineering for biomedicineand in guiding active matter.

Abstract: International audience; The popularity of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is growing significantly, and so is the interest in gaining a better understanding of their functioning. In this work, it is even more interesting to reveal the behavior of these blackboxes since we are involved in a clinical context. To this end, we propose a general analytic framework, named Neuro-based Concept Detector (NCD), for interpreting deep representations of a DNN. Based on the activation patterns of the hidden neurons, this framework highlights the capacity of neurons to detect a specific concept related to the final task. The key strength of our framework is that it provides an interpretability tool for any type of DNN performing a classification task regardless of the application field. In this paper, we evaluate this framework on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained for the task of French phone classification. This choice was guided by the final objective of a long-term research project, which aims to identify the linguistic units best contributing to the maintenance or loss of intelligibility in the context of speech disorders. Through NCD, we demonstrate the emergence of phonetic features in the classification layers of the CNN-based model, while applied on healthy speech, a concept with a great interest in the field of clinical phonetics. Indeed, we further show that these interesting findings shed light on the characteristics of speech disorders in terms of altered phonetic features and provide relevant information for clinical practice, notably, patients' rehabilitation and follow-up.

Abstract: We prove that every semidefinite moment relaxation of a polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a ball constraint can be reformulated as a semidefinite program involving a matrix with constant trace property (CTP). As a result such moment relaxations can be solved efficiently by first-order methods that exploit CTP, e.g., the conditional gradient-based augmented Lagrangian method. We also extend this CTP-exploiting framework to large-scale POPs with different sparsity structures. The efficiency and scalability of our framework are illustrated on second-order moment relaxations for various randomly generated quadratically constrained quadratic programs., 43 pages, 6 algorithms, 23 tables

Abstract: International audience; Animal-inspired mobile robots tend to show remarkable performance in outdoor locomotion and navigation tasks, but a big gap remains between robots and animals in terms of autonomy and endurance. Biomimicry is helping to solve numerous design issues through a better understanding of how animals move. Insect-inspired robots, in particular, can be built to interact with uneven terrains which are difficult to traverse for other robots, and bio-inspired robots designed to overcome the technological limitations of artificial systems are also valuable models for biologists in better understanding the behavior of animals. Therefore, exploring the limitations caused by mimicking insects of a few millimeters with robots measuring several centimeters becomes relevant. In this study, we first present two test benches used to investigate leg movement: one used to characterize that of an ant and the other that of a robotic leg. By comparing this multiscale data, we discuss the significance and relevance of these measurements in evaluating the robotic performance.

Abstract: International audience; Background: The association between omega-3 (ω-3) PUFAs and cognition, brain imaging and biomarkers is still not fully established.Objectives: The aim was to analyze the cross-sectional and retrospective longitudinal associations between erythrocyte ω-3 index and cognition, brain imaging, and biomarkers among older adults.Methods: A total of 832 Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 3 (ADNI-3) participants, with a mean (SD) age of 74.0 (7.9) y, 50.8% female, 55.9% cognitively normal, 32.7% with mild cognitive impairment, and 11.4% with Alzheimer disease (AD) were included. A low ω-3 index (%EPA + %DHA) was defined as the lowest quartile (≤3.70%). Cognitive tests [composite score, AD Assessment Scale Cognitive (ADAS-Cog), Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), Trail Making Test, Category Fluency, Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment] and brain variables [hippocampal volume, white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), positron emission tomography (PET) amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau] were considered as outcomes in regression models.Results: Low ω-3 index was not associated with cognition, hippocampal, and WMH volume or brain Aβ and tau after adjustment for demographics, ApoEε4, cardiovascular disease, BMI, and total intracranial volume in the cross-sectional analysis. In the retrospective analysis, low ω-3 index was associated with greater Aβ accumulation (adjusted β = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.03; P = 0.003). The composite cognitive score did not differ between groups; however, low ω-3 index was significantly associated with greater WMS-delayed recall cognitive decline (adjusted β = -1.18; 95% CI: -2.16, -0.19; P = 0.019), but unexpectedly lower total ADAS-Cog cognitive decline. Low ω-3 index was cross-sectionally associated with lower WMS performance (adjusted β = -1.81, SE = 0.73, P = 0.014) and higher tau accumulation among ApoE ε4 carriers.Conclusions: Longitudinally, low ω-3 index was associated with greater Aβ accumulation and WMS cognitive decline but unexpectedly with lower total ADAS-Cog cognitive decline. Although no associations were cross-sectionally found in the whole population, low ω-3 index was associated with lower WMS cognition and higher tau accumulation among ApoE ε4 carriers. Abstract: We establish small energy H\"{o}lder bounds for minimizers $u_\varepsilon$ of \[E_\varepsilon (u):=\int_\Omega W(\nabla u)+ \frac{1}{\varepsilon^2} \int_\Omega f(u),\] where $W$ is a positive definite quadratic form and the potential $f$ constrains $u$ to be close to a given manifold $\mathcal N$. This implies that, up to subsequence, $u_\varepsilon$ converges locally uniformly to an $\mathcal N$-valued $W$-harmonic map, away from its singular set. We treat general energies, covering in particular the 3D Landau-de Gennes model for liquid crystals, with three distinct elastic constants. Similar results are known in the isotropic case $W(\nabla u)=\vert \nabla u\vert^2$ and rely on three ingredients: a monotonicity formula for the scale-invariant energy on small balls, a uniform pointwise bound, and a Bochner equation for the energy density. In the level of generality we consider, all of these ingredients are absent. In particular, the lack of monotonicity formula is an important reason why optimal estimates on the singular set of $W$-harmonic maps constitute an open problem. Our novel argument relies on showing appropriate decay for the energy on small balls, separately at scales smaller and larger than $\varepsilon$: the former is obtained from the regularity of solutions to elliptic systems while the latter is inherited from the regularity of $W$-harmonic maps. Abstract: International audience; In this work, we address the problem of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image resolution enhancement by exploiting a newly introduced deep unrolled quantum denoiser, based on quantum interaction theory adapted to computational imaging. Following recent advances in image restoration using the Plug-and-Play (PnP) framework, we impose this external deep learning denoiser as a regularizer within the super-resolution (SR) problem. The quantum-based deep unrolled denoiser combined with a computationally efficient way to deal with the degradation operators, and the PnP scheme, result in an original way of approaching the image resolution enhancement problem. Experiments conducted on dental CBCT images are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed model for image resolution enhancement tasks. The numerical results suggest that the proposed method allows better restoration performances compared to existing state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract: International audience; Plug-and-Play (PnP) methods are a class of iterative algorithms for inverse problems solving in which regularization is provided by a generic denoiser. Although producing very good results, these PnP optimization methods produce only point estimators and not a complete characterization of the posterior distribution. We propose a new family of stochastic PnP methods by exploiting a Gibbs sampling algorithm coupled with a generative neural network. In addition to a point estimator, the proposed approach provides confidence intervals for a moderate computational cost. The efficiency of the proposed samplers is evaluated through simulations of image reconstruction problems. The performances of the proposed estimators compare favorably with those of the most recent optimization and MCMC algorithms.; Les méthodes Plug-and-Play (PnP) forment une classe d'algorithmes itératifs pour la résolution de problèmes inverses dans lesquels la régularisation est assurée par le recours à un débruiteur générique. Bien que produisant de très bons résultats, ces méthodes d'optimisation PnP ne produisent souvent que des estimateurs ponctuels et non une caractérisation complète de la distribution a posteriori. Nous proposons une nouvelle famille de méthodes PnP stochastiques en exploitant un algorithme d'échantillonnage de Gibbs couplé à un réseau de neurones génératif. En plus d'un estimateur ponctuel, l'approche proposée fournit des intervalles de confiance pour un coût de calcul très modéré. L'efficacité des échantillonneurs proposés est évaluée grâce à des simulations de problèmes de reconstruction d'image. Les performances des estimateurs proposés se comparent favorablement à celles des algorithmes d'optimisation et MCMC les plus récents.

Abstract: International audience; The identification of a set of parameters x from observed data y is often reduced to the resolution of a problem of the type f(x) = y, where f is a continuous application. This equation appears in domains such as (blind) inverse problems, data assimilation, or optimal control. When the solution is not unique, it may be important to inform the user about the set of plausible solutions. We propose here an algorithm to locally describe a set of solutions of this equation. It is essentially based on automatic differentiation and on a local parameterization of the solution manifold. We illustrate the interest of this approach on two toy examples.; L'identification d'un ensemble de paramètres x à partir de données observées y est souvent réduite à la résolution d'un problème du type f(x) = y, où f est une application continue. Cette équation apparaît dans des domaines tels que les problèmes inverses (aveugles), l'assimilation de données ou encore le contrôle optimal. Lorsque la solution n'est pas unique, il peut être important d'en informer l'utilisateur et de le renseigner sur l'ensemble des solutions plausibles. Nous proposons ici un algorithme permettant de décrire localement un ensemble de solutions de cette équation. Il repose essentiellement sur la différentiation automatique et sur une paramétrisation locale de la variété des solutions. Nous illustrons l'intérêt de cette approche sur deux exemples jouets.

Abstract: International audience; The Coq Community Survey 2022 was an online public survey of users of the Coq proof assistant conducted during February 2022. Broadly, the survey asked about use of Coq features, user interfaces, libraries, plugins, and tools, views on renaming Coq and Coq improvements, and also demographic data such as education and experience with Coq and other proof assistants and programming languages. The survey received 466 submitted responses, making it the largest survey of users of an interactive theorem prover (ITP) so far. We present the design of the survey, a summary of key results, and analysis of answers relevant to ITP technology development and usage. In particular, we analyze user characteristics associated with adoption of tools and libraries and make comparisons to adjacent software communities. Notably, we find that experience has significant impact on Coq user behavior, including on usage of tools, libraries, and integrated development environments.

Abstract: National audience; This article is the first step of a complex process of measuring fine particle concentrations by spectral cameras. To do this, an accurate and fast classification of all pixels from a hyperspectral image is crucial to determine the nature of the objects and their optical properties. The methods traditionally used rely on the richness of the spectral information in measurements with hundreds of wavelengths. However, neglecting the spatial dimension during the classification can lead to situations where the resulting classes may not be spatially consistent. Here, we propose a classification method (Spatial Spectral Optimised Classification) based on learning, which takes into account spectral features but also spatial information via neighbouring pixels.; Cet article est la première étape d'un processus complexe de mesure de la concentration de particules fines par des caméras spectrales. Pour ce faire, une classification précise et rapide de tous les pixels d'une image hyperspectrale est cruciale pour déterminer la nature des objets et leurs propriétés optiques. Les méthodes traditionnellement utilisées reposent sur la richesse de l'information spectrale avec des centaines de longueurs d'onde habituellement mesurées par les caméras. Cependant, négliger la dimension spatiale durant une classification conduit à certaines situations où les classes obtenues ne sont pas spatialement cohérentes. Nous proposons ici une méthode de classification optimisée pour la mesure de la qualité de l'air (Spatial Spectral Optimised Classification) basée sur l'apprentissage, qui prend en compte les caractéristiques spectrales mais aussi l'information spatiale via les pixels voisins.

Abstract: International audience; La communauté informatique commence doucement à se préoccuper des problèmes de reproductibilité de ses expériences. Le nombre de contributions sous le label "reproductibilité" est en croissance et des conférences demandent maintenant une évaluation des artéfacts par les pairs. Cependant, nous pensons que les problématiques qui y sont adressées ne sont que partiellement comprises ou utiles à la cause. La contribution principale de ce papier est l'exposition des imperfections en termes de reproductibilité des pratiques actuelles et des outils usuels pour la mise en place d'un environnement logiciel pour une expérience. Nous présentons ensuite une méthodologie se basant sur des gestionnaires de paquets fonctionnels pour favoriser une bonne reproductibilité de l'environnement logiciel.

Abstract: In this article, the historical study from Carathéodory-Zermelo about computing the quickest nautical path is generalized to Zermelo navigation problems on surfaces of revolution, in the frame of geometric optimal control. Using the Maximum Principle, we present two methods dedicated to analyze the geodesic flow and to compute the conjugate and cut loci. We apply these calculations to investigate case studies related to applications in hydrodynamics, space mechanics and geometry., Dans cet article, on généralise l’étude historique de Carathéodory-Zermelo sur le calcul du chemin nautique le plus rapide, aux problèmes de navigation de Zermelo sur des surfaces de révolution dans le cadre du contrôle optimal géométrique. En utilisant le Principe du Maximum, on présente deux méthodes permettant d’analyser le flot géodésique et de calculer les lieux conjugués et de coupure en lien avec l’optimalité locale et globale des trajectoires. Ces calculs sont ensuite appliqués à des cas d’études liés à des applications en hydrodynamique, en mécanique spatiale et en géométrie.

Abstract: International audience; Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.

Abstract: International audience; Background and purpose - A clinical risk score for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy could help improve prevention. Methods - A case-control study was conducted including (i) definite or probable SUDEP cases collected by the French National Sentinel Mortality Epilepsy Network and (ii) control patients from the French national research database of epilepsy monitoring units. Patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy were eligible. Multiple logistic regressions were performed. After sensitivity analysis and internal validation, a simplified risk score was developed from the selected variables. Results - Sixty-two SUDEP cases and 620 controls were included. Abstract: We review palaeoenvironmental proxies and combinations of these relevant for understanding hunter-gatherer niche construction activities in pre-agricultural Europe. Our approach consists of two steps: (1) identify the possible range of hunter-gatherer impacts on landscapes based on ethnographic studies; (2) evaluate proxies possibly reflecting these impacts for both the Eemian (Last Interglacial, Middle Palaeolithic) and the Early–Middle Holocene (Mesolithic). We found these paleoenvironmental proxies were not able to unequivocally establish clear-cut differences between specific anthropogenic, climatic and megafaunal impacts for either time period in this area. We discuss case studies for both periods and show that published evidence for Mesolithic manipulation of landscapes is based on the interpretation of comparable data as available for the Last Interglacial. If one applies the ‘Mesolithic’ interpretation schemes to the Neanderthal record, three common niche construction activities can be hypothesised: vegetation burning, plant manipulation and impact on animal species presence and abundance. Our review suggests that as strong a case can be made for a Neanderthal impact on landscapes as for anthropogenic landscape changes during the Mesolithic, even though the Neanderthal evidence comes from only one high-resolution site complex. Further research should include attempts (e.g. by means of modelling studies) to establish whether hunter-gatherer impact on landscapes played out at a local level only versus at a larger scale during both time periods, while we also need to obtain comparative data on the population sizes of Last Interglacial and Holocene hunter-gatherers, as these are usually inferred to have differed significantly.

Abstract: Internet traffic recognition is an essential tool for access providers since recognizing traffic categories related to different data packets transmitted on a network help them define adapted priorities. That means, for instance, high priority requirements for an audio conference and low ones for a file transfer, to enhance user experience. As internet traffic becomes increasingly encrypted, the mainstream classic traffic recognition technique, payload inspection, is rendered ineffective. This paper uses machine learning techniques for encrypted traffic classification, looking only at packet size and time of arrival. Spiking neural networks (SNN), largely inspired by how biological neurons operate, were used for two reasons. Firstly, they are able to recognize time-related data packet features. Secondly, they can be implemented efficiently on neuromorphic hardware with a low energy footprint. Here we used a very simple feedforward SNN, with only one fully-connected hidden layer, and trained in a supervised manner using the newly introduced method known as Surrogate Gradient Learning. Surprisingly, such a simple SNN reached an accuracy of 95.9% on ISCX datasets, outperforming previous approaches. Besides better accuracy, there is also a very significant improvement on simplicity: input size, number of neurons, trainable parameters are all reduced by one to four orders of magnitude. Next, we analyzed the reasons for this good accuracy. It turns out that, beyond spatial (i.e. packet size) features, the SNN also exploits temporal ones, mostly the nearly synchronous (within a 200ms range) arrival times of packets with certain sizes. Taken together, these results show that SNNs are an excellent fit for encrypted internet traffic classification: they can be more accurate than conventional artificial neural networks (ANN), and they could be implemented efficiently on low power embedded systems., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: International audience; Self-regulated learning (SRL) is a crucial higher-order skill required by learners of the 21st century, who will need to become lifelong learners to adapt to the continually changing environments. Literature provides examples of tools for scaffolding SRL in online environments. In this study, we provide the state-of-the-art concerning tools that support SRL in terms of theoretical models underpinning development, supported SRL processes, tool functionalities, used data and visualizations. We reviewed 42 articles published between 2008 and 2020, including information from 25 tools designed to support SRL. Our findings indicate that (1) many of the studies do not explicitly specify the SRL theoretical model used to guide the design process of the tool; (2) goal setting, monitoring, and self-evaluation are the most prevalent SRL processes supported through functionalities such as content navigation, user input forms, collaboration features, and recommendations; (3) the relationship between tool functionalities and SRL processes are rarely described; (4) few tools assess the impact on learners' SRL process and learning performance. Finally, we highlight some lessons learned that might contribute to implementing future tools that support learners' SRL processes.

Abstract: If Poincar{\'e} inequality has been studied by Bobkov for radial measures, few is known about the logarithmic Sobolev inequalty in the radial case. We try to fill this gap here using different methods: Bobkov's argument and super-Poincar{\'e} inequalities, direct approach via L1-logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. We also give various examples where the obtained bounds are quite sharp. Recent bounds obtained by Lee-Vempala in the logconcave bounded case are refined for radial measures.

Abstract: We study the algebraic and geometric properties of stated skein algebras of surfaces with punctured boundary. We prove that the skein algebra of the bigon is isomorphic to the quantum group ${\mathcal O}_{q^2}(\mathrm{SL}(2))$ providing a topological interpretation for its structure morphisms. We also show that its stated skein algebra lifts in a suitable sense the Reshetikhin-Turaev functor and in particular we recover the dual $R$-matrix for ${\mathcal O}_{q^2}(\mathrm{SL}(2))$ in a topological way. We deduce that the skein algebra of a surface with $n$ boundary components is an algebra-comodule over ${\mathcal O}_{q^2}(\mathrm{SL}(2))^{\otimes{n}}$ and prove that cutting along an ideal arc corresponds to Hochshild cohomology of bicomodules. We give a topological interpretation of braided tensor product of stated skein algebras of surfaces as "glueing on a triangle"; then we recover topologically some braided bialgebras in the category of ${\mathcal O}_{q^2}(\mathrm{SL}(2))$-comodules, among which the "transmutation" of ${\mathcal O}_{q^2}(\mathrm{SL}(2))$. Abstract: We prove an existence and uniqueness result for solutions $\varphi$ to a weighted pendulum equation in $\mathbb{R}$ where the weight is non-smooth and coercive. We also establish (in)stability results for $\varphi$ according to the monotonicity of the weight. These results are applied in a reduced model for thin ferromagnetic nanowires with notches to obtain existence, uniqueness and stability of domain walls connecting two opposite directions of the magnetization.
