Abstract

Calcium fluxes show scleractinian corals to be the most rapidly calcifying organisms. Using a sensitive protocol on cloned corals of the branching scleractinian species and Ca(super 45), repeatable biochemical and physiological reactions for calcium transport and layering during calcification are observed. The error in isotope exchange is reduced by the use of microcolonies with no skeletal surfaces. The technique exhibits clearly the transport pathways and processes.

Abstract

International audience; In 2014, European F-gas directive plans the prohibition of fluorinated working fluids with GWP of 2500 or more from 2020. Consequently, new working fluids have to be considered in the future such as HydroFluoroOlefin, carbon dioxide or mixture of HFO with hydro-fluoro-carbon or CO 2. The knowledge of the thermo-physical properties of working fluid is essential for the evaluation of performance of heat pumps, ORC and refrigeration. Herein, several " French " laboratories proposed to investigate the thermo-physical properties of the R744 + R1234yf binary system. In 2014, Juntarachat et al. measured and correlated vapour liquid equilibria including mixture critical point. New experimental determinations for density and viscosity using vibrating densitometer and capillary viscometer are presented. Also, enthalpies of mixing are determined using BT-215 Calvet calorimeters. In addition, molecular simulation based on empirical force have been realized. Several thermodynamic and transport properties have been obtained using Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations. The PPR78 cubic equation of state and a multipolar version of SAFT-Mie are used to predict the new experimental data for thermodynamic properties. The model developed is used as an input to simulate the performance of new heat pump system. An experimental heat pump is used to evaluate the achievable energy efficiency with this mixture in real machines with one test molar composition of 5% R1234yf). The optimal pressure and COP will be compared to those obtained with pure CO 2 in similar operating conditions.

Abstract

International audience; Sugar cane trash is an agricultural residue that can be used as renewable energy source. In this work, sugar cane trash from Pakistan is characterized using proximate and ultimate analyses. Its decomposition is also investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer. The kinetic parameters of sugar cane pyrolysis are determined using the iso-conversional method assuming a first order reaction. The results reveal that the sample contains low moisture (8.00%), high ash (11.66%), low carbon (41.10%) and hydrogen (5.64%) and its calorific value is 15.30 MJ/kg. The activation energy and frequency factor are 24.4 kJ/mol and 2522.93/min, respectively.

Abstract

International audience; Earth observation satellites are space sensors which acquire data, compress and record it on board, and then download it to the ground. Because of the use of more and more sophisticated compression algorithms, the amount of data resulting from an acquisition is more and more unpredictable. In such conditions, planning satellite data download activities offline on the ground is more and more problematic. In this paper, we report the results of a work aiming at evaluating the positive impact of planning downloads onboard when the amount of data produced by each acquisition is known. The data download problem to be solved is an assignment and scheduling problem with unsharable resources , sequences of activities, precedence constraints, time-dependent minimum durations, and a complex optimization criterion. The generic InCELL library (Pralet and Verfaillie 2013a)) is used to model constraints and criterion, to check non temporal constraints, to propagate temporal constraints, and to evaluate the optimization criterion. On top of this library, greedy and local search algorithms have been designed to produce down-load plans with limited time and computing resources available on board.

Abstract

The clinical value of imaging is well established for the follow-up of many lymphoid malignancies but not for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). A meta-analysis was performed with the dataset of 3 German CLL Study Group phase 3 trials (CLL4, CLL5, and CLL8) that included 1372 patients receiving first-line therapy for CLL. Response as well as progression during follow-up was reassessed according to the National Cancer Institute Working Group1996 criteria. A total of 481 events were counted as progressive disease during treatment or follow-up. Of these, 372 progressions (77%) were detected by clinical symptoms or blood counts. Computed tomography (CT) scans or ultrasound were relevant in 44 and 29 cases (9% and 6%), respectively. The decision for relapse treatment was determined by CT scan or ultrasound results in only 2 of 176 patients (1%). CT scan results had an impact on the prognosis of patients in complete remission only after the administration of conventional chemotherapy but not after chemoimmunotherapy. In conclusion, physical examination and blood count remain the methods of choice for staging and clinical follow-up of patients with CLL as recommended by the International Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia 2008 guidelines.
