Abstract

There are several challenges associated with the design and manufacture of the optics required for the imaging time-of- propagation detector constructed for the Belle II particle physics experiment. This detector uses Cherenkov light radiated in quartz bars to identify subatomic particles: pions, kaons, and protons. The optics are physically large (125 cm x 45 cm x 2 cm bars and 45 cm x 10 cm x 5 cm prisms), all surfaces are optically polished, and there is very little allowance for chamfers or surface defects. In addition to the optical challenges, there are several logistical and handling challenges associated with measuring, assembling, cleaning, packaging, and shipping these delicate precision optics. This paper describes a collaborative effort between Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of Cincinnati, and ZYGO Corporation for the design and manufacture of 48 fused silica optics (30 bars and 18 prisms) for the iTOP Detector. Details of the iTOP detector design that drove the challenging optical requirements are provided, along with material selection considerations. Since the optics are so large, precise, and delicate, special care had to be given to the selection of a manufacturing process capable of achieving the challenging optical and surface defect requirements on such large and high-aspect-ratio (66:1) components. A brief update on the current status and performance of these optics is also provided.

Abstract

We report the discovery of Ξc(3055)0, observed by its decay into the final-state ΛD0, and present the first observation and evidence of the decays of Ξc(3055)+ and Ξc(3080)+ into ΛD+. We also perform a combined analysis of the ΛD+ with the Σc++K- and Σc∗++K- decay modes to measure the ratios of branching fractions, masses and widths with improved accuracy. We measure the ratios of branching fractions B(Ξc(3055)+→ΛD+)/B(Ξc(3055)+→Σc++K-)=5.09±1.01±0.76, B(Ξc(3080)+→ΛD+)/B(Ξc(3080)+→Σc++K-)=1.29±0.30±0.15, and B(Ξc(3080)+→Σc∗++K-)/B(Ξc(3080)+→Σc++K-)=1.07±0.27±0.04, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Abstract

We present a search for a non-Standard-Model invisible particle X-0 in the mass range 0.1-1.8 GeV/c(2) in B+ -> e(+)X(0) and B+ -> mu X-+(0) decays. The results are obtained from a 711 fb(-1) data sample that corresponds to 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs, collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. One B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode to determine the momentum of the lepton of the signal decay in the rest frame of the recoiling partner B meson. We find no evidence of a signal and set upper limits on the order of 10(-6).

Abstract

The process gamma gamma -> p (p) over barK(+)K(-) and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The production of p (p) over barK(+)K(-) and a Lambda(1520)(0) ((Lambda) over bar (1520)(0)) signal in the pK(-) ((p) over barK(+)) invariant mass spectrum are clearly observed. However, no evidence for an exotic baryon near 1540 MeV/c(2), denoted as Theta(1540)(0) ((Theta) over bar (1540)(0)) or Theta(1540)(++) (Theta(1540)(--)), is seen in the pK(-) ((p) over barK(+)) or pK(+) ((p) over barK(-)) invariant mass spectra. Cross sections for gamma gamma -> p (p) over barK(+)K(-), Lambda(1520)(0)(p) over barK(+) + c.c. and the products sigma(gamma gamma -> Theta(1540)(0)(p) over barK(+) + c.c.)B(Theta(1540)(0) -> pK(-)) and sigma(gamma gamma -> Theta(1540)(++)(p) over barK(-) + c.c.)B(Theta(1540)(++) -> pK(+)) are measured. We also determine upper limits on the products of the chi(c0) and chi(c2) two-photon decay widths and their branching fractions to p (p) over barK(+)K(-) at the 90% credibility level.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the decay Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(+)pi(-) using a 980 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. This is the first observation of a doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay of a charmed baryon. We measure the branching ratio of this decay with respect to its Cabibbo-favored counterpart to be B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(+)pi(-))/B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+)) = (2.35 +/- 0.27 +/- 0.21) x 10(-3), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Abstract

The branching fractions of the Upsilon(1S) inclusive decays into final states with a J/psi or psi(2S) are measured with improved precision to be B Upsilon(1S) -> J/psi + anything = (5.25 +/- 0.13(stat) +/- 0.25(syst) x 10(-4) and B Upsilon(1S) -> psi(2S) + anything = (1.23 +/- 0.17(stat) +/- 0.11(syst)) x 10(-4). The first search for Upsilon(1S) decays into XYZ states that decay into a J/psi or a psi(2S) plus one or two charged tracks yields no significant signals for XYZ states in any of the examined decay modes, and upper limits on their production rates in Upsilon(1S) inclusive decays are determined.

Abstract

We report the analysis of the three-body e(+)e(-) -> B (B) over bar pi(+/-), B (B) over bar*pi(+/-), and B*(B) over bar* pi(+/-) processes, including the first observations of the Z(b)(+/-)(10610) -> [B (B) over bar* + c.c.](+/-) and Z(b)(+/-)(10650) -> [B*(B) over bar*](+/-) transitions that are found to dominate the corresponding final states. We measure Born cross sections for the three-body production of sigma(e(+)e(-) -> [B (B) over bar* + c.c.](+/-)pi(-/+)) = [17.4 +/- 1.6(stat) +/- 1.9(syst)]pb and sigma(e(+)e(-) -> [B*(B) over bar*](+/-)pi(-/+)) = [8.75 +/- 1.15(stat) +/- 1.04(syst)] pb and set a 90% C.L. upper limit of sigma(e(+)e(-) -> [B (B) over bar](+/-)pi(-/+)) < 2.9 pb. The results are based on a 121.4 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at a center-of-mass energy near the Upsilon(10860) peak.

Abstract

We measure the decay Bs0→K0K0 using data collected at the ?(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 121.4 fb-1. We measure a branching fraction B(Bs0→K0K0)=[19.6-5.1+5.8(stat)±1.0(syst)±2.0(NBs0Bs0)]×10-6 with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. This measurement constitutes the first observation of this decay.

Abstract

We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for chi(c1) and chi(c2) production in B decays. We measure B(B -> chi X-c1) = (3.03 +/- 0.05 (stat) +/- 0.24(syst)) x 10(-3) and B(B -> chi X-c2) = (0.70 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.10(syst)) x 10(-3). For the first time, chi(c2) production in exclusive B decays in the modes B-0 -> chi(c2) pi K--(+) and B-0 -> chi(c2) pi(-)pi K-+(+) has been observed, along with first evidence for the B-0 -> chi(c2) pi K--(s)0 decay mode. For chi c1 production, we report the first observation in the B+ -> chi(c1) pi(-)pi K-+(+), B-0 -> chi(c1) pi(-)pi K-+(s)0 and B-0 -> chi(c1) pi(-)pi K-+(+) decay modes. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of chi(c2) in comparison to chi(c1) in B decays. In addition, we report searches for X(3872) and chi(c1) (2P) in the B+ -> (chi(c1) pi(+)pi(-))K+ decay mode. The reported results use 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.

Abstract

We search for the rare radiative decay D-0 -> gamma gamma using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 832 fb(-1) recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. We find no statistically significant signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(D-0 -> gamma gamma) < 8.5 x 10(-7) at 90% confidence level. This is the most restrictive limit on the decay channel to date.

Abstract

Recent progress on the development of very low noise high purity germanium ionization spectrometers has produced an instrument of 1.2 kg mass and excellent noise performance. The detector was installed in a low-background cryostat intended for use in a direct detection search for low mass, WIMP dark matter. This Transaction reports the thermal characterization of the cryostat, specifications of the newly prepared 1.2 kg p-type point contact germanium detector, and the spectroscopic performance of the integrated system. The integrated detector and low background cryostat achieved full-width-at-half-maximum noise performance of 98 eV for an electronic pulse generator peak and 1.9 keV for the 1332 keV Co-60 gamma ray., Submitted to IEEE Transaction in Nuclear Science

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and the longitudinal polarization fraction of B-0 -> rho(+)rho(-) decays, as well as the time-dependent CP violating parameters in decays into longitudinally polarized rho(+)rho(-) pairs with Belle's final data set of 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs, at the Upsilon(4S) resonance, collected at the asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider KEKB. We obtain B(B-0 -> rho(+)rho(-)) = (28.3 +/- 1.5(stat) +/- 1.5(syst)) x 10(-6), f(L) = 0.988 +/- 0.012(stat) +/- 0.023(syst), A(CP) = 0.00 +/- 0.10(stat) +/- 0.06(syst), S-CP = -0.13 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.05(syst). We perform an isospin analysis to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle phi(2) and obtain two solutions with phi(2) = (93.7 +/- 10.6)degrees, being most compatible with other Standard-Model based fits to the data.

Abstract

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element vertical bar V-cb vertical bar using the decay B -> Dl nu(l) (l = e,mu) based on 711 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) -> Upsilon(4S) data recorded by the Belle detector and containing 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs. One B meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a D+ or D-0 meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay B -> Dl nu(l) is found to be B(B-0 -> D(-)l(vertical bar)nu(l)) = (2.31 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.11(syst))%. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parametrization of Caprini, Lellouch, and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction G(1) = 1.0541 +/- 0.0083 calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain eta(EW)vertical bar V-cb vertical bar = (40.12 +/- 1.34) x 10(-3), where eta(EW) is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parametrization of Boyd, Grinstein, and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find eta(EW)vertical bar V-cb vertical bar = (41.10 +/- 1.14) x 10(-3).

Abstract

We report a measurement of the B-0 -> psi(2S)pi(0) branching fraction based on the full Upsilon(4S) data set of 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We obtain B(B-0 -> psi(2S)pi(0)) = (1.17 +/- 0.17(stat) +/- 0.08(syst)) x 10(-5). The result has a significance of 7.2 standard deviations and is the first observation of the decay B-0 -> psi(2S)pi(0).

Abstract

We search for the process B-0 -> pi(-) tau(+)nu(tau) using the full Belle data set of 711 fb(-1), corresponding to 772 x 10(6)B (B) over bar pairs, collected at the gamma (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We reconstruct one B meson in a hadronic decay and search for the B-0 -> pi(-)tau(+)nu(tau) process in the remainder of the event. No significant signal is observed and an upper limit of B(B-0 -> pi(-) tau(+)nu(tau)) < 2.5 x 10(-4) is obtained at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry AFB as a function of the squared four-momentum of the dilepton system, q2, for the electroweak penguin process B→Xs+- with a sum of exclusive final states, where is an electron or a muon and Xs is a hadronic recoil system with an s quark. The results are based on a data sample containing 772×106 BB¯ pairs recorded at the (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. Abstract

We report new measurements of the total cross sections for e(+)e(-) -> Upsilon(nS)pi(+)pi(-) (n = 1, 2, 3) and e(+)e(-) -> b (b) over bar from a high-luminosity fine scan of the region root s = 10.63-11.05 GeV with the Belle detector. We observe that the Upsilon(nS)pi(+)pi(-) spectra have little or no nonresonant component and extract from them the masses and widths of Upsilon(10860) and Upsilon(11020) and their relative phase. We find M-10860 = (10891.1 +/- 3.2(-1.7)(+0.6)) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(10860) = (53.7(-5.6)(-5.4)(+7.1)(+1.3)) MeV and report first measurements M-11020 = (1098(-2.5)(-2.1)(+6.4)(+9.0)) MeV/c(2), Gamma(11020) = (61(-19)(-20)(+9)(+2)) MeV, and phi(11020) - phi 10860 = (-1.0 +/- 0.4(-0.1)(+1.4)) rad.

Abstract

The MAJORANA Collaboration is building the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, a 60 kg array of high purity germanium detectors housed in an ultra-low background shield at the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead, SD. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge while demonstrating the feasibility of a tonne-scale experiment. It may also carry out a dark matter search in the 1-10 GeV/c^2 mass range. We have found that customized Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors produced by Canberra have several desirable features for a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment, including low electronic noise, excellent pulse shape analysis capabilities, and simple fabrication. We have deployed a customized BEGe, the MAJORANA Low-Background BEGe at Kimballton (MALBEK), in a low-background cryostat and shield at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility in Virginia. Abstract

Physics experiments, environmental surveillance, and treaty verification techniques continue to require increased sensitivity for detecting and quantifying radionuclides of interest. This can be done by detecting a greater fraction of gamma emissions from a sample (higher detection efficiency) and reducing instrument backgrounds. A current effort for increased sensitivity in high resolution gamma spectroscopy will produce an intrinsic germanium (HPGe) array designed for high detection efficiency, ultra-low-background performance, and useful coincidence efficiencies. The system design is optimized to accommodate filter paper samples, e.g. samples collected by the Radionuclide Aerosol Sampler/Analyzer (RASA). The system will provide high sensitivity for weak collections on atmospheric filter samples, as well as offering the potential to gather additional information from more active filters using gamma cascade coincidence detection. The current effort is constructing an ultra-low-background HPGe crystal array consisting of two vacuum cryostats, each housing a hexagonal array of 7 crystals on the order of 70% relative efficiency per crystal. Traditional methods for constructing ultra-low-background detectors are used, including use of materials known to be low in radioactive contaminants, use of ultra pure reagents, clean room assembly, etc. The cryostat will be constructed mainly from copper electroformed into near-final geometry at PNNL. Details of the detector design, simulation of efficiency and coincidence performance, HPGe crystal testing, and progress on cryostat construction are presented.

Abstract

Historically, large germanium arrays for field applications have consisted of multiple detectors each housed in their own cryostat. In order to ruggedize the detectors for field use these cryostats have had additional support material introduced that significantly impacted cryogenic performance. This paper presents the development of a new cryostat design suitable for deployment of ~10 kg of high purity germanium detectors that achieves outstanding cryogenic performance (~5 W at 80 K) while providing the high detection efficiency required for stand-off measurements and the ruggedization required for use in a variety of field applications.

Abstract

The International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty includes a network of stations and laboratories for collection and analysis of radioactive aerosols. Alternative approaches to IMS operations are considered as a method of enhancing treaty verification. Ultra-low background (ULB) detection promises the possibility of improvements to IMS minimum detectable activities (MDAs) well below the current approach, requiring MDA⩽30 μBq/m 3 of air for 140 Ba, or about 10 6 fissions per daily sample.

Abstract

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons (e(+)e(-) -> hhX) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these dihadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these dihadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These dihadron results are obtained from a 655 fb(-1) data sample collected near the gamma (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton (e(+)e(-) -> pX) cross sections are extracted from a 159 fb(-1) data subsample.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the branching fraction ratios R(D)(()*()) of (B) over bar -> D-(*())tau(-)(nu) over bar (tau) relative to (B) over bar -> D-(*())l(-)(nu) over barl (where l = e or mu) using the full Belle data sample of 772 x 10(6)B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The measured values are R(D) = 0.375 +/- 0.064(stat) +/- 0.026(syst) and R(D*) = 0.293 +/- 0.038 (stat) +/- 0.015 (syst). The analysis uses hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side B meson and purely leptonic t decays. The results are consistent with earlier measurements and do not show a significant deviation from the standard model prediction.

Abstract

For many nuclear material safeguards inspections, spectroscopic gamma detectors are required which can achieve high event rates (in excess of 106 s−1) while maintaining very good energy resolution for discrimination of neighboring gamma signatures in complex backgrounds. Such spectra can be useful for non-destructive assay (NDA) of spent nuclear fuel with long cooling times, which contains many potentially useful low-rate gamma lines, e.g., Cs-134, in the presence of a few dominating gamma lines, such as Cs-137. Detectors in use typically sacrifice energy resolution for count rate, e.g., LaBr 3 , or vise-versa, e.g., CdZnTe. In contrast, we anticipate that beginning with a detector with high energy resolution, e.g., high-purity germanium (HPGe), and adapting the data acquisition for high throughput will be able to achieve the goals of the ideal detector. In this work, we present quantification of Cs-134 and Cs-137 activities, useful for fuel burn-up quantification, in fuel that has been cooling for 22.3 years. A segmented, planar HPGe detector is used for this inspection, which has been adapted for a high-rate throughput in excess of 500k counts/s. Using a very-high-statistic spectrum of 2.4 × 1011 counts, isotope activities can be determined with very low statistical uncertainty. However, it is determined that systematic uncertainties dominate in such a data set, e.g., the uncertainty in the pulse line shape. This spectrum offers a unique opportunity to quantify this uncertainty and subsequently determine required counting times for given precision on values of interest.

Abstract

Using a sample of 771.6×10(6) ϒϒ(4S) decays collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider, we observe, for the first time, the transition ϒ(4S)→ηh(b)(1P) with the branching fraction B[ϒ(4S)→ηh(b)(1P)]=(2.18±0.11±0.18)×10(-3) and we measure the h(b)(1P) mass M(h(b)(1P))=(9899.3±0.4±1.0) MeV/c(2), corresponding to the hyperfine (HF) splitting ΔM(HF)(1P)=(0.6±0.4±1.0) MeV/c(2). Using the transition h(b)(1P)→γη(b)(1S), we measure the η(b)(1S) mass M(η(b)(1S))=(9400.7±1.7±1.6) MeV/c(2), corresponding to ΔM(HF)(1S)=(59.6±1.7±1.6) MeV/c(2), the η(b)(1S) width Γ(η(b)(1S))=(8(-5)(+6)±5) MeV/c(2) and the branching fraction B[h(b)(1P)→γη(b)(1S)]=(56±8±4)%.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B0->D(*)CP h0 decays, where the light neutral hadron h0 is a pi0, eta or omega meson, and the neutral D meson is reconstructed in the CP eigenstates K+ K-, K0S pi0 or K0S omega. The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays. The hypothesis of no mixing-induced CP violation is excluded in these decays at the level of 5.4 standard deviations.

Abstract

The process e(+)e(-) -> gamma chi(cJ) (J = 1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb(-1) of data at and around the Gamma(nS) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetricenergy e(+)e(-) collider. No significant signal is observed except from psi(2S) decays. Upper limits on the cross sections between root s = 3.80 and 5.56 GeV are determined at the 90% credibility level, which range from a few pb to a few tens of pb. We also set upper limits on the decay rate of the vector charmonium [psi(4040), psi(4160), and psi(4415)] and charmoniumlike [Y(4260), Y(4360), and Y(4660)] states to gamma chi(cJ).

Abstract

We report a search for the charmless hadronic decay B-0 -> eta pi(0) with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 694 fb(-1) containing 753 x 10(6) BB pairs. The data were collected by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(4S) resonance at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. We measure a branching fraction B(B-0 > eta pi(0)) = (4.1(-1.5-0.7)(+1.75+0.5)) x 10(-7), where the first unceminty is statistical and the second is systematic. Our measurement gives an upper limit of beta(B-0 -> n pi(0)) < 6.5 x 10(-7) at 90% confidence level. The signal has a significance of 3.0 standard deviations and constitutes the first evidence for this decay mode.

Abstract

We present an analysis of the semi-inclusive decays $B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ \nu$ and $B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ \nu$, where $X$ denotes a final state that may consist of additional hadrons or photons and $\ell$ is an electron or muon. The studied $B_s$ decays are contained in the $121.4~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ $\Upsilon(5S)$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions of the decays are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ \nu) = [8.2 \pm 0.2 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.6 (\text{syst}) \pm 1.4 (\text{ext})]\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ \nu) = [5.4 \pm 0.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.4 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.9 (\text{ext})]\%$, where the first two uncertainties are statistical and systematic and the last is due to external parameters. The measurement also provides an estimate of the $B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ production cross-section, $\sigma(e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (53.8 \pm 1.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 4.0 (\text{syst}) \pm 3.4 (\text{ext}))\,{\rm pb}$, at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 10.86\,{\rm GeV}$., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

We report a measurement of the B0 and B+ meson decays to the D- sK0 Sπ+ and D- sK+K+ final states, respectively, using 657 × 106BB¯ pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e+ collider. Using the D- s → φ π-, K∗(892)0K- and K0 SK- decay modes for the Ds reconstruction, we measure the following branching fractions: B(B0 → D- sK0 sπ+) = [0.47 ± 0.06(stat) ± 0.05(syst)] × 10-4 and B(B+ → D- sK+K+) = [0.93 ± 0.22(stat) ± 0.10(syst)] × 10-5. We find the ratio of the branching fraction of B+ → D- sK+K+ to that of the analogous Cabibbo-favored B+ → D- sK+π+ decay to be RB = 0.054 ± 0.013(stat) ± 0.006(syst), which is consistent with the naive factorization model. We also observe a deviation of the DsK invariant-mass distribution from the three-body phase-space model for both studied decays.

Abstract

Using data samples of 102 x 10(6) gamma(1S) and 158 x 10(6) gamma(2S) events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays gamma(1S, 2S) --> J/psi(psi') + X, where X = eta(c).chi(cJ) (J = 0, 1, 2), eta(c)(2S), X(3940), and X(4160). No significant signal is observed in the spectra of the mass recoiling against the reconstructed J/psi or psi' except for the evidence of chi(c1) production with a significance of 4.6 sigma for gamma(1S) -> J/psi + chi(c1). The measured branching fraction B(gamma(1S) -> J/psi + chi(c1)) is [3.90 +/- 1.21 (stat) +/- 0.23(syst) x 10(-6). The 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes having a significance of less than 3 sigma are determined. These results are consistent with theoretical calculations using the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach.

Abstract

We present the results of an amplitude analysis of B-0 --> J/psi K- pi(+) decays. A new charged charmoniumlike state Z(c)(4200)(+) decaying to J/psi pi(+) is observed with a significance of 6.2 sigma. The mass and width of the Z(c)(4200)(+) are 4196(-29-13)(+31+17) MeV/c(2) and 370(-70-132)(+70+70) MeV, respectively; the preferred assignment of the quantum numbers is J(P) = 1(+). In addition, we find evidence for Z(c)(4430)(+) --> J/psi pi(+). The analysis is based on a 711 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider KEKB.

Abstract

We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of neutral B mesons to eta ' K* (892)(0). The results are based on a 711 fb(-1) data sample that contains 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs, collected at the gamma(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e(+)e(-) collider. We observe the decay for the first time with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations and obtain its branching fraction B[B-0 -> eta ' K* (892)(0)] = [2.6 +/- 0.7(stat) +/- 0.2(syst)] x 10(-6). We also measure the CP-violating asymmetry as A(CP) [B-0 -> eta ' K* (892)(0)] = -0.22 +/- 0.29(stat) +/- 0.07(syst).

Abstract

The e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-) pi(0)chi(bj) ( J = 0, 1, 2) processes are studied using a 118 fb(-1) data sample acquired with the Belle detector at a center-of-mass energy of 10.867 GeV. Unambiguous pi(+)pi(-) pi(0)chi(bj) ( J = 1, 2), omega chi(b1) signals are observed, and indication for omega chi(b2) is seen, both for the first time, and the corresponding cross section measurements are presented. No significant pi(+)pi(-) pi(0)chi(b0) or omega chi(b0) signals are observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross sections for these two processes are obtained. In the pi(+)pi(-) pi(0) invariant mass spectrum, significant non-omega signals are also observed. We search for the X(3872)-like state (named X-b) decaying into omega Upsilon(1S); no significant signal is observed with a mass between 10.55 and 10.65 GeV= c(2).

Abstract

We present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+)decay using a data sample of 978 fb(-1) collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The number of Lambda(+)(c) baryons is determined by reconstructing the recoiling D(*)(-)(p) over bar pi(+)system in events of the type e(+)e(-) -> D(*)(-)(p) over bar pi(+)Lambda(+)(c). The branching fraction is measured to be B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+)) = (6.84 +/- 0.24(-0.27)(+0.21))%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fractions and charge- parity-( CP-) violating parameters in B..K decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 x 10(6) BB _ pairs collected at the.d4S_ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric- energy e_e- collider. We obtain the branching fractions BdB0 0 _d4.5 0.4dstat_ 0.3dsyst_x10- 6; BdB_..K__ d6.80.4dstat_ 0.4dsyst__x10- 6 which are in agreement with their respective current world averages. For the CP- violating parameters, we obtain A.K0 S - 0.36 +/- 0.19dstat_ 0.05dsyst_; S.K0 S _0.91 0.32dstat_ 0.05dsyst_; A.K_ - 0.03 +/- 0.04dstat_ 0.01dsyst_; where A and S represent the direct and mixing- induced CP asymmetry, respectively. We find no evidence of CP violation in the decay channel B_..K_; however, we obtain the first evidence of CP violation in the B0..K0 S decay channel at the level of 3.1 standard deviations.

Abstract

We report a measurement of D-0-(D) over bar(0) mixing parameters and a search for indirect CP violation through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of D-0 -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) decays. The results are based on 921 fb(-1) of data accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. Assuming CP conservation, we measure the mixing parameters x = (0.56 +/- 0.19(-0.09-0.09)(+0.03+0.06))% and y = (0.30 +/- 0.15(-0.05-0.06)(+0.04+0.03))%, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to the amplitude model, respectively. With CP violation allowed, the parameters vertical bar q/p vertical bar = 0.90(-0.15-0.04-0.05)(+0.16+0.05+0.06) and arg(q/p) = (- 6 +/- 11 +/- 3(-4)(+3))degrees are found to be consistent with conservation of CP symmetry in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, respectively.

Abstract

We present measurements of the masses and decay widths of the baryonic states Σc(2455)0/++ and Σc(2520)0/++ using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711fb-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider operating at the (4S) resonance. We report the mass differences with respect to the Λc+ baryon M(Σc(2455)0)-M(Λc+)=167.29±0.01±0.02MeV/c2, M(Σc(2455)++)-M(Λc+)=167.51±0.01±0.02MeV/c2, M(Σc(2520)0)-M(Λc+)=231.98±0.11±0.04MeV/c2, M(Σc(2520)++)-M(Λc+)=231.99±0.10±0.02MeV/c2,and the decay widths Γ(Σc(2455)0)=1.76±0.04-0.21+0.09MeV/c2, Γ(Σc(2455)++)=1.84±0.04-0.20+0.07MeV/c2,Γ(Σ c(2520)0)=15.41±0.41-0.32+0.20MeV/c2,Γ(Σc(2520)++)=14. 77±0.25-0.30+0.18MeV/c2,where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The isospin mass splittings are measured to be M(Σc(2455)++)-M(Σc(2455)0)=0.22±0.01±0.01MeV/c2 and M(Σc(2520)++)-M(Σc(2520)0)=0.01±0.15±0.03MeV/c2. These results are the most precise to date. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The cross sections of the processes e(+)e(-)-> K(+)K(-)J/Psi and K(s)(0)K(s)(0)J/Psi are measured via initial state radiation at center-of-mass energies between the threshold and 6.0 GeV using a data sample of 980 fb(-1) collected with the Belle detector on or near the r(nS) resonances, where n=1,2,..5. The cross sections for e(+)e(-)-> K(+)K(-)J/Psi are at a few pb level and the average cross section for K(s)(0)K(s)(0)J/Psi is 1.8 +/- 0.6 (stat)+/- 0.3(syst) pb between 4.4 and 5.2 GeV. All of them are consistent with previously published results with improved precision. A search for resonant structures and associated intermediate states in the cross section of the process e(+)e(-)-> K(+)K(-)J/Psi is performed.

Abstract

We report measurements of branching fractions of tau lepton decays to final states with a K-S(0) meson using a 669 fb(-1) data sample accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The inclusive branching fraction is measured to be beta(tau(-) -> (KSX-)-X-0 nu(tau)) = (9.15 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.15) X 10(-3), where X- can be anything; the exclusive branching fractions are beta(tau(-) -> pi(-) K-S(0)nu(tau)) = (4.16 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.08) X 10(-3), beta(tau(-) -> K- K-S(0)nu(tau)) = (7.40 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.27) X 10(-4), beta(tau(-) -> pi(-) K-S(0)pi(0)nu(tau)) = (1.93 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.07) X 10(-3), beta(tau(-) -> K- K-S(0)pi(0)nu(tau)) = (7.48 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.37) X 10(-4), beta(tau(-) -> pi(-) (KSKS0)-K-0 nu(tau)) = (2.33 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.09) X 10(-4), beta(tau(-) -> pi(-) (KSKS0)-K-0 pi(0)nu(tau)) = (2.00 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.20) X 10(-5), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. For each mode, the accuracy is improved over that of pre-B-factory measurements by a factor ranging from five to ten. In tau(-) -> pi(-) (KSKS0)-K-0 pi(0)nu(tau) decays, clear signals for the intermediate states tau(-) -> pi(-) f(1)(1285)nu(tau) and tau(-) -> K*- K-S(0)pi(0)nu(tau) are observed.

Abstract

We observe D-0-(D) over bar (0) mixing in the decay D-0 -> K+ pi(-) using a data sample of integrated luminosity 976 fb(-1) collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+) e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. We measure the mixing parameters x'(2) = (0.09 +/- 0.22) x 10(-3) and y' = (4.6 +/- 3.4) x 10(-3) and the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored decay rates R-D = (3.53 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic combined. Our measurement excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at the 5.1 standard deviation level.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for the X(1835) state in the process e(+)e(-) -> J/psi X(1835) using a data sample of 672 fb(-1) collected with the Belle detector at and near the Upsilon(4S) resonance at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. No significant evidence is found for this process, and an upper limit is set on its cross section times the branching fraction: sigma(Bom) (e(+)e(-) -> J/psi X(1835)).B(X(1835) ->>= 3 charged tracks) < 1.3 fb at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We find evidence for the semileptonic baryonic decay B- -> p (p) over barl(-)(nu) over bar (l) (l = e, mu), based on a data sample of 772 million B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. A neural-network based hadronic B-meson tagging method is used in this study. The branching fraction of B- -> p (p) over barl(-)(nu) over bar (l) is measured to be (5.8(-2.1)(+2.4)(stat) +/- 0.9(syst)) x 10(-6) with a significance of 3.2 sigma s, where lepton universality is assumed. We also estimate the corresponding upper limit: B(B- -> p (p) over barl(-)(nu) over bar (l)) < 9.6 x 10(-6) at the 90% confidence level. This measurement helps constrain the baryonic transition form factor in B decays.

Abstract

The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is an array of natural and enriched high purity germanium detectors that will search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76-Ge and perform a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with masses below 10 GeV. As part of the MAJORANA research and development efforts, we have deployed a modified, low-background broad energy germanium detector at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility. With its sub-keV energy threshold, this detector is sensitive to potential non-Standard Model physics, including interactions with WIMPs. Abstract

The lifetime of the $\tau$-lepton is measured using the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow\tau^+\tau^-$, where both $\tau$-leptons decay to $3\pi\nu_\tau$. The result for the mean lifetime, based on $711\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and $60\,\mathrm{MeV}$ below, is $\tau = (290.17 \pm 0.53(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.33(\mathrm{syst.}))\cdot10^{-15}\,\mathrm{s}$. The first measurement of the lifetime difference between $\tau^+$ and $\tau^-$ is performed. The upper limit on the relative lifetime difference between positive and negative $\tau$-leptons is $|\Delta\tau| / \tau < 7.0 \times 10^{-3}$ at 90% CL., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay Bs0→J/ψφ(1020), evidence and a branching fraction measurement for Bs0→J/ψf2′(1525), and the determination of the total Bs0→J/ψK+K- branching fraction, including the resonant and nonresonant contributions to the K+K- channel. We also determine the S-wave contribution within the φ(1020) mass region. The absolute branching fractions are B[Bs0→J/ψφ(1020)]=(1. 25±0.07(stat)±0.08(syst)±0.22(fs))×10 -3, B[Bs0→J/ψf2′(1525)]=(0.26±0.06(stat) ±0.02(syst)±0.05(fs))×10-3, and B[Bs0→J/ψK+K-]=(1.01±0.09(stat)±0. 10(syst)±0.18(fs))×10-3, where the last systematic error is due to the branching fraction of bb→Bs(*) Bs(*). The branching fraction ratio is found to be B[Bs0→J/ ψf2′(1525)]/B[Bs0→J/ψφ(1020)]=(21.5±4.9(stat) ±2.6(syst))%. All results are based on a 121.4 fb-1 data sample collected at the Υ(5S) resonance by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. © 2013 American Physical Society.
