The K\ensuremath{\alpha} and K\ensuremath{\beta} x-ray spectra of molybdenum bombarded by 5.5-MeV/amu $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ ions were measured with high resolution. In such heavy-ion--atom collisions, multiple ionization of the M and L shells of the target atoms is extremely likely to occur, resulting in a complex structure of the observed spectra. The ${\mathit{L}}^{\mathit{n}}$-satellite structure was resolved, whereas M vacancies produce only a shift and a broadening of the lines so that it is not possible to obtain in a direct way information about the M-hole distribution. We thus propose a method for the analysis of x-ray spectra of multiply ionized atoms. In this method the measured K\ensuremath{\alpha} and K\ensuremath{\beta} spectra are simultaneously analyzed as a sum of K\ensuremath{\alpha}${\mathit{L}}^{\mathit{n}}$${\mathit{M}}^{\mathit{m}}$ and K\ensuremath{\beta}${\mathit{L}}^{\mathit{n}}$${\mathit{M}}^{\mathit{m}}$ components, respectively, with theoretically determined profiles. A binomial distribution of holes in the M shell is assumed and the M-shell ionization probabilities are treated as adjustable parameters. The profiles are constructed as sums of Voigt functions, whose positions and heights are determined by extensive multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method calculations. If, in a simultaneous fit to the K\ensuremath{\alpha}${\mathit{L}}^{0}$ and K${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\beta}}}_{1,3}$${\mathit{L}}^{0}$ lines, just one parameter ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{M}}^{\mathit{X}}$ describing the M-shell ionization at the moment of the K x-ray transition is used, the experimental data are not reproduced in an entirely satisfactory way (${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{M}}^{\mathit{X}}$=0.19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02). Therefore, two parameters, one common for the 3s and 3p subshells ${\mathit{p}}_{3\mathit{s}\mathit{p}}^{\mathit{X}}$ and the other for the 3d subshells, were introduced and a much better fit to both lines (${\mathit{p}}_{3\mathit{s}\mathit{p}}^{\mathit{X}}$=0.17\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02, ${\mathit{p}}_{3\mathit{d}}^{\mathit{X}}$=0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02) was obtained.The importance and influence of alternative ionizing processes as electron-capture and rearrangement processes are discussed and the M-shell ionization probability at the moment of the collision (${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{M}}$=0.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02) is deduced from the ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{M}}^{\mathit{X}}$ value. It is shown that the differences between ${\mathit{p}}_{3\mathit{s}\mathit{p}}^{\mathit{X}}$ and ${\mathit{p}}_{3\mathit{d}}^{\mathit{X}}$ are mainly due to Coster-Kronig transitions, rather than due to different subshell ionization probabilities. The spectra were also analyzed with respect to the L-shell ionization on the basis of the calculated K\ensuremath{\alpha}${\mathit{L}}^{\mathit{n}}$${\mathit{M}}^{0}$, K${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\beta}}}_{1,3}$${\mathit{L}}^{\mathit{n}}$${\mathit{M}}^{0}$, and K${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\beta}}}_{2}$${\mathit{L}}^{\mathit{n}}$${\mathit{M}}^{0}$ components. The M-shell ionization was taken into account by taking a larger Gaussian width and by shifting the positions of the lines. The intensity yields of the L satellites were determined, the primary vacancy distribution was deduced, and the results from K\ensuremath{\alpha} and K\ensuremath{\beta} spectra are compared.

Excited states of 166 Tm were investigated by means of the 165 Ho(α, 3n) reaction. Two rotational bands were identified up to tentative spins of 20 − and 18 + . Their electromagnetic.properties were studied and interpreted in the framework of the cranking shell model (CSM) and of the particle-rotor model (PRM). Both the revised Donau and Frauendorf formula (CSM) and the PRM calculations reproduce the experimental results rather well for spins between 10 and 14, whereas they fail at low and high angular momenta. The two models predict different I -dependences for the B (M1) values in the angular momentum region of I j p + j n . The existence and interpretation of the signature inversion of the yrast band is discussed using three different models. The results show that the occurrence of signature inversion does not necessarily mean the presence of trixial nuclear shape.

TheKβ spectra of molybdenum, palladium and lanthanum bombarded by 6.7 MeV/amu4He ions were measured with a transmission curved crystal spectrometer.L andM satellite lines were observed and resolved. Experimental energies are compared with those calculated with a MCDF program.M -shell ionization probabilities are deduced from the measured satellite intensity ratios and compared with theoretical (SCA) predictions. The experimental values are found to be higher than the calculated ones (by a factor of 2 for La and a factor of about 4 for Mo and Pd). The influence of coupling effects, electron wave functions, electron capture, electron correlation and target activation is discussed.

A diffraction spectrometer with a quartz crystal bent to the radius of 4.64 m has been installed at the beam line of KVI variable energy cyclotron. The instrument is intended for a detailed study of KX-rays from multiply ionized atoms with Z > 56. The KX-ray spectra of Tb bombarded with 15 MeV/amu 4He and 20Ne ions are presented along with the calibration 84.257 keV gamma line of 170Yb. The L-shell ionization probabilities in near central collisions are deduced from the measured L-satellite yield distribution.

We demonstrate that ultralow-level Al impurities on a silicon surface can be measured by using the high-resolution grazing emission x-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) technique combined with synchrotron-radiation excitation. An Al-impurity level of about ${10}^{12}\text{ }\text{atoms}/{\text{cm}}^{2}$ was reached by observing the $\text{Al}\text{ }K\ensuremath{\alpha}$ x-ray fluorescence in the resonant Raman-scattering background-``free'' regime by choosing an appropriate beam energy below the $\text{Si}\text{ }K$ absorption edge. Present results show that by combining the GEXRF method with the vapor phase decomposition technique the ${10}^{7}\text{ }\text{atoms}/{\text{cm}}^{2}$ level can be reached for Al detection on silicon. Finally, we found that the high-resolution GEXRF technique is a sensitive tool to study the morphology of surface nanostructures.

We report on the experimental determination of the palladium L-subshell Coster-Kronig (CK) transition yields via high-resolution measurements of the L{alpha}{sub 1,2} (L{sub 3}-M{sub 4,5}) and L{beta}{sub 1} (L{sub 2}-M{sub 4}) x-ray emission lines. The L x-ray spectra were recorded by means of curved crystal spectrometers employing energy-tunable synchrotron radiation for fluorescence production. The CK yields were derived from the relative L x-ray intensity jumps at the L edges by fitting the fluorescence intensities as a function of the photon energy to the photoionization cross sections. The L x-ray intensities were corrected for solid-state effects which were estimated from the comparison of the measured and theoretical Pd L-edge x-ray-absorption spectra. Thanks to high resolution, the partial CK yield f{sub 13}{sup L{sub 1}}{sup L{sub 3}}{sup M} could be extracted from the intensities of the resolved L{alpha}M satellite transitions. For f{sub 23}, f{sub 12}, and f{sub 13} CK rates, values of 0.164{+-}0.033, 0.047{+-}0.001, and 0.730{+-}0.039 were found, respectively. For the partial CK yields f{sub 13}{sup L{sub 1}}{sup L{sub 3}}{sup M} and f{sub 13}{sup L{sub 1}}{sup L{sub 3}}{sup N}, results of 0.406{+-}0.023 and 0.324{+-}0.032, respectively, were obtained.

Using 98% linearly polarized radiation at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, the performance of a prototype two-dimensional microstrip Ge(i) detector for x-ray imaging and as a Compton polarimeter has been evaluated. Using the energy and position sensitivity of the detector, the ability to obtain a complete reconstruction of the Compton event has been demonstrated. The modulation coefficient of the polarimeter is in good agreement with the theoretical limit of a perfect detector.

International audience; A twin crystal-spectrometer assembly, operated in the focusing compensated asymmetric Laue geometry has been developed for accurate spectroscopy of fast highly charged heavy ions in the hard-X-ray region. Coupled to the focusing crystal optics is a specially developed two-dimensional position-sensitive X-ray detector which is necessary for retaining spectral resolution also for fast moving sources. We summarize the crystal optics and demonstrate the usefulness of the instrument for spectroscopy of both stationary and fast moving X-ray sources. Results are reported from several tests employing a 169Yb gamma-ray source and the Lyman radiation of one-electron Pb81+ ions traveling at a velocity corresponding to [beta]†[reverse not equivalent]†v/c†[approximate]†0.59. The features of the instrument presented may be useful in many applications where it appears difficult to make the leap from conventional X-ray energy measurements to wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy based on crystal optics.

This paper reports on the investigation of the double $K$-shell ionization of metallic aluminum induced by photon and electron impact. The experimental method consisted to measure the $K\ensuremath{\alpha}$ hypersatellite spectra resulting from the radiative decay of double $1s$ vacancy states by means of high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy using a Bragg-type von Hamos crystal spectrometer. Measurements of the photon-induced spectra were carried out at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, France, while those of the electron-induced spectra were performed at the University of Fribourg. The double $1s$ ionization probabilities and cross sections were derived from the $K{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{2}$ hypersatellite to diagram line intensity ratios for photon beam energies ranging between 3.1 and 5.5 keV and for different incident electron-beam energies ranging between 4 and 20 keV. The energy and linewidth of the $K{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{2}$ hypersatellite x-ray line were also determined for which consistent results were obtained from the photon and electron-beam measurements.

We report on the photon energy dependence of the K-shell double photoionization (DPI) of Mg, Al, and Si. The DPI cross sections were derived from high-resolution measurements of x-ray spectra following the radiative decay of the K-shell double vacancy states. Our data evince the relative importance of the final-state electron-electron interaction to the DPI. By comparing the double-to-single K-shell photoionization cross-section ratios for neutral atoms with convergent close-coupling calculations for He-like ions, the effect of outer shell electrons on the K-shell DPI process is assessed. Universal scaling of the DPI cross sections with the effective nuclear charge for neutral atoms is revealed.

The experimental distribution of Kα X-ray satellite yield from 46Pd atoms bombarded with oxygen ions at 5.4 MeV/u energy (i.e. closely matching the target L-shell electron velocity) shows significant deviations from the binomial distribution. The deviations can be accounted for by assuming that the L-shell ionization is due to two uncorrelated processes: the direct ionization by impact and the electron capture from the L-shell of the target atom to the K-shell of the projectile, both occurring at nearly central collissions. The corresponding probability values are obtained using simple statistical considerations.

The Kβ X-ray spectrum of molybdenum bombarded by 28 MeV 4He ions was measured with a transmission curved crystal spectrometer. L and even M satellite lines were observed and resolved. Experimental energies are compared with those calculated with a MCDF program. Satisfactory agreement is found. Measuring the Kβ X-ray spectra with high resolution is a novel technique to also determine the M-shell ionization probability in central collisions. Comparison of the value obtained for Mo with theoretical (SCA) predictions demonstrates the importance of the recoil term.

We demonstrate that in order to interpret the x-ray satellite structure of Pd Lα1,2(L₃M4,5) transitions excited by fast O ions, which was measured using a high-resolution von Hamos crystal spectrometer, the vacancy rearrangement processes, taking place prior to the x-ray emission, have to be taken into account. The measured spectra were compared with the predictions of the multi- con.guration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations using the fluorescence and Coster- Kronig yields which were modiffed due to a reduced number of electrons available for relaxation processes and the effect of closing the Coster-Kronig transitions. We demonstrate that the vacancy rearrangement processes can be described in terms of the rearrangement factor, which can be calculated by solving the system of rate equations modelling the flow of vacancies in the multiply ionized atom. By using this factor, the ionization probability at the moment of collision can be extracted from the measured intensity distribution of x-ray satellites. The present results support the independent electron picture of multiple ionization and indicate the importance of use of Dirac-Hartree-Fock wave functions to calculate the ionization probabilities.

High-resolution x-ray measurements were performed with a von Hamos-type bent crystal spectrometer using for the detection of the diffracted photons either a back-illuminated charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a front-illuminated one. For each CCD the main x-ray emission lines (e.g., Kalpha, Kbeta, Lalpha, and Lbeta) of a variety of elements were measured in order to probe the performances of the two detectors between 1 and 18 keV. From the observed x-ray lines the linearity of the energy response, the noise level, the energy resolution, and the quantum efficiency ratio of the two CCDs were determined.

X-ray resonant Raman scattering (RRS) spectra of Al, Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, Si, and SiO{sub 2} were measured at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, using a high-resolution Bragg-type curved crystal spectrometer. The x-ray RRS spectra were collected at several beam energies tuned below the 1s absorption thresholds of Al and Si. Differences in the spectral features between the elemental samples and the oxide ones were clearly observed. The data were interpreted using the second-order perturbation theory within the Kramers-Heisenberg (KH) approach. It is shown that, using the KH formalism, oscillator strengths that are similar to the ones deduced from x-ray absorption measurements can be extracted from emission x-ray RRS spectra. The total cross sections for the x-ray RRS process were derived for the different photon beam energies and compared with theoretical predictions. For elemental silicon, the weak 1s-3p excitation was observed and found to be consistent with results of density of states calculations.

The x-ray satellite structure of Pd Lalpha1,2(L3M4,5) transition excited by an impact of O7+ and Ne6+ ions with energies 279 and 178 MeV, respectively, which were measured using a high-resolution von Hamos crystal spectrometer, is discussed in terms of the multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations. We demonstrate, by using the arguments of the general central limit theorem (GCLT), that a structure of complex M-shell satellites of Pd Lalpha1,2(M-m) transitions for a higher number of spectator vacancies (m > 4), which consists of hundreds of thousands of individual x-ray transitions as obtained from the MCDF calculations, can be well described by a single Voigtian profile. The Lorentzian width of such Voigtian line can be well modeled by using the results of the MCDF calculations for simpler configurations with a number of vacancies m < 4 . This method allows one to describe realistically a complex structure of M-shell satellites, thus extending the applicability of the MCDF calculations, which are limited by an increasing complexity of numerical calculations.

We report on nonlinear interaction of solid Fe with intense femtosecond hard x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses. The experiment was performed at the CXI end-station of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) by means of high- resolution x-ray emission spectroscopy. The focused x-ray beam provided extreme fluence of ~105 photons/A2. Two-photon absorption leading to K-shell hollow atom formation and to single K-shell ionization of solid Fe was investigated.

High energy resolution off-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (HEROS) was applied to study one-photon (OPA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) processes in metallic copper generated by ultra-short hard X- ray FEL pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The OPA and TPA signals were measured using a multiple-crystal von Hamos diffraction spectrometer allowing observation of both the intermediate and final states in the TPA process. The universal scaling of TPA/OPA cross sections is discussed.

We report on the first high-resolution measurements of the K x-ray resonant Raman scattering (RRS) in Si. The measured x-ray RRS spectra, interpreted using the Kramers-Heisenberg approach, revealed spectral features corresponding to electronic excitations to the conduction and valence bands in silicon. The total cross sections for the x-ray RRS at the 1s absorption edge and the 1s-3p excitation were derived. The Kramers-Heisenberg formalism was found to reproduce quite well the x-ray RRS spectra, which is of prime importance for applications of the total-reflection x-ray fluorescence technique.

High-resolution measurements of the resonant X-ray Raman scattering (RRS) of Al and Si and their oxides were performed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, using a von Hamos Bragg-type curved crystal spectrometer. To probe the influence of chemical effects on the RRS X-ray spectra, Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 samples were also investigated. The X-ray RRS spectra were measured at different photon beam energies tuned below the K-absorption edge. The measured spectra are compared to results of RRS calculations based on the second-order perturbation theory within the Kramers–Heisenberg approach.

K-X-ray spectra of Zr, Nb, Mo and Pd targets bombarded with 250 MeV carbon and 360 MeV oxygen ions are studied with high resolution diffraction spectrometry. Relative yields and natural widths of the Khα1,2 hypersatellite lines are determined and compared with those of the diagram lines. The widths of Khα1,2 lines are compared with the new phenomenological formula which takes into account the retardation of the Khα₁ transition in the LS coupling scheme. The data significantly exceed the expected values. Deduced lifetimes of the double K-hole states are shorter than expected.

The satellite and hypersatellite $K$ x-ray emission of a thin Mg foil and thick polycrystalline Si target bombarded by $34\text{\penalty1000-\hskip0pt}\mathrm{MeV}$ C and $50\text{\penalty1000-\hskip0pt}\mathrm{MeV}$ Ne ions was measured using high-resolution crystal diffractometry. The corresponding projectile reduced velocities $v∕{v}_{K}$ were 1.09 and 0.92 for C ions and 1.02, 0.86 for Ne ions in case of Mg and Si targets, respectively. An energy resolution of approximately $0.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ enabled separation of contributions corresponding to states with different numbers of $K$- and $L$-shell vacancies. The relative intensities of satellite and hypersatellite lines were determined by fitting the measured spectra with line shapes calculated using the GRASP92 computer code. To determine the production yields of initial states from the measured x-ray yields, the total decay schemes of initial states were considered. The decay schemes were also used to determine the relative intensities of components contributing to the observed $K\ensuremath{\alpha}$ satellites and hypersatellites and $K\ensuremath{\beta}$ satellite intensities. Including theoretical predictions in the fitted model is crucial to analyze properly the $K\ensuremath{\alpha}$ hypersatellite region which overlaps the $K\ensuremath{\beta}$ satellites. The initial-state production yields were then used to determine the $L$-shell ionization probabilities and the double- to single-$K$-shell ionization ratio corresponding to the four investigated collisions. The experimental values were compared to the theoretical predictions obtained within the independent electron model using single-electron ionization probabilities calculated by the three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. Since the targets used were thick enough, the equilibrium projectile charge-state distributions in the solid media were assumed. While for the double- to single-$K$-shell ionization ratios a satisfactory agreement was observed between the CTMC predictions and our experimental results, the $L$-shell ionization probabilities were found to be overestimated by the CTMC calculations by a factor of about 2.

The K{beta}{sub 2} x-ray spectra of zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, and palladium targets bombarded with 20.8-MeV/amu {sup 12}C ions were measured with a high-resolution transmission-type bent crystal spectrometer. Well resolved M{sup 1} and M{sup 2} satellite lines were observed. Average M-shell and 3s,p- and 3d-subshell ionization probabilities for nearly central collisions were deduced. These values are compared with theoretical predictions from the semiclassical approximation using hydrogenlike and Dirac-Hartree-Fock wave functions. The experimental energy shifts of the K{beta}{sub 2} M{sup m=1,2} satellite lines are compared with values obtained from extensive multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations.

High-resolution measurements of the photoinduced ${L}_{3}\ensuremath{-}{M}_{1}$ and ${L}_{3}\ensuremath{-}{M}_{4,5}$ x-ray emission lines were performed with a reflection-type bent-crystal spectrometer for a variety of elements ranging from xenon $(Z=54)$ to iridium $(Z=77).$ The measurements were performed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. From the observed linewidths of the ${L}_{3}\ensuremath{-}{M}_{1}$ x-ray transitions, the widths of the ${M}_{1}$ levels were determined using the ${L}_{3}$ level widths extracted from the measured ${L}_{3}\ensuremath{-}{M}_{5}$ transitions, and assuming for the ${M}_{5}$ levels the widths reported recently by Campbell and Papp [At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 77, 1 (2001)]. In the rare-earth region a Z-dependent broadening of the ${M}_{1}$ level was observed.

High‐resolution measurements of the K x‐ray spectra of metallic Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe were performed with a von Hamos Bragg crystal spectrometer. The target x‐ray emission was induced by by 2–19 MeV/amu C, O and Ne ions. The energies of the well resolved KαLN X‐ray satellite lines were determined. Based on the measured values the empirical formula for the KαLN satellite energy shift of the 3d transition elements is given. For the Ca and Ti target bombarded with C ions also the KαhLN hypersatellite lines the KβLN satellite lines and even the KβhLN hypersatellite lines have been measured and their energies determined. The possible variation of the energy differences between neighboring satellite and hypersatellite lines with the projectile energy and atomic number was probed. No significant dependence on the projectile characteristics was observed. In contrast to that the absolute energies of the satellite and hypersatellite lines lines were found to depend on the projectile velocity. This dependence was attri...

High‐resolution measurements of the L1‐M4,5 fluorescence x‐ray lines of Sm, Ho, Yb, W, Pt, Hg and Bi were performed, using a transmission DuMond‐type and a reflection von Hamos‐type bent crystal spectrometer. Despite the poor intensity of the dipole‐forbidden transitions, precise linewidths were obtained. Assuming for the M4,5 level widths the values reported recently by Campbell and Papp, the L1 level widths of the investigated elements could be determined with a precision of 4–10%. A good agreement with Campbell and Papp’s data was observed for the heaviest elements. For Sm and Ho, however, an intriguing discrepancy was found. The latter was explained by a splitting effect of the L1 subshell resulting from the coupling of the 2s electron spin in the initial excited state with the total spin of the open 4f level. Based on this splitting picture, adjustements of the L1 level widths recommended by Campbell and Papp were proposed for the lanthanides region.

The cross sections for the production of double K and L vacancy states in Al, Ca, and Co as a result of electron bombardment were determined for impact energies ranging from the double excitation threshold up to 20 keV. The cross sections were derived from the measured intensity ratios I K α L (1):I K α L (0) of the satellite-to-parent-diagram x-ray lines. The specific contributions of the shake and two-step electron-electron processes could be probed by comparing the relative satellite yields observed in the electron-induced spectra to those obtained by photoionization. In particular the energy-dependent cross sections for double K and L excitation resulting from two-step-two processes could be deduced. The measurements were performed by means of high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy, using a reflection-type bent crystal spectrometer.

The fluorescence $\mathrm{KL}$ x-ray emission of argon induced by impact with monoenergetic photons was observed with a high-resolution reflecting-type bent crystal spectrometer. The measurements were performed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. X-ray beam energies in the range $3455 \mathrm{eV}l~\ensuremath{\Elzxh}\ensuremath{\omega}l~6540 \mathrm{eV}$ were used to investigate the $K+L$ double excitation from threshold to saturation. The excitation probabilities were deduced from the satellite-to-diagram line yield ratios $\mathrm{I}(KL\ensuremath{-}{L}_{2,3}L): \mathrm{I}(K\ensuremath{-}{L}_{2,3}).$ Results were compared to predictions based on the model of Thomas and the one of Roy. From the comparison, parameters such as excitation onset energies, high-energy limit shake probabilities, and radius of the $2p$ orbital in ionic Ar were deduced. The satellite line shapes and their evolution with the excitation energy were analyzed with the aid of multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations.

High-resolution measurements of the photoinduced dipole-forbidden ${L}_{1}{\ensuremath{-}M}_{4,5}$ x-ray emission lines were performed with a reflection-type and a transmission-type bent-crystal spectrometer for ${}_{62}\mathrm{Sm},$ ${}_{67}\mathrm{Ho},$ ${}_{70}\mathrm{Yb},$ ${}_{74}\mathrm{W},$ ${}_{78}\mathrm{Pt},$ ${}_{80}\mathrm{Hg},$ and ${}_{83}\mathrm{Bi}.$ From the observed linewidths of the ${L}_{1}{\ensuremath{-}M}_{4,5}$ x-ray transitions, the level widths of the subshell ${L}_{1}$ were determined assuming for the ${M}_{4,5}$ level widths the values reported recently by Campbell and Papp [X-ray Spectrom. 24, 307 (1995); At. The photoinduced $K\ensuremath{\alpha}$ x-ray spectra of elements between sodium and chlorine were measured by means of high-resolution crystal diffractometry. The $K{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{1,2}{L}^{(1)}$ satellites were observed and resolved from the corresponding diagram lines. The probabilities for producing via shake processes ${K}^{(1)}{L}^{(1)}$ double-hole states were deduced from the satellite to parent diagram line yield ratios. The results are compared to theoretical sudden approximation predictions. A satisfactory agreement is found except for sodium and chlorine for which our experimental results are markedly underestimated by the calculations.

The Kα hypersatellite X-ray spectrum of 42Mo target bombarded with 17 MeV/u 16O ions was measured with a high-resolution transmission bent crystal spectrometer. Well resolved lines of L-satellites and K-hypersatellites of Kα1 and Kα2 transitions were observed. Such data give valuable and rich information for testing the approximation used for the description of the multielectron system. The Khα1 hypersatellite, treated as spin-flip 1S0→3P1 transition, is forbidden in pure L-S coupling. In that case the relative yields of the Kα hypersatellites reflect directly the degree of intermediate coupling in the atom. Moreover, energies of the Khα1.2L0,1 transitions and the I(Khα1L0,1)/I(Khα2L0,1) intensity ratios are much more influenced by the Breit interaction than the diagram lines. The discussion of these problems is illustrated with the measured Kα hypersatellite spectrum of 42Mo.

The observation of the enhancement of radiative recombination (RR) into the K-shell for U92+ ions interacting with cooling electrons in x-ray RR experiment performed at the ESR storage ring is reported. From the measured intensities of K-RR x-rays for the electron relative energies in the range 0-1000 meV a clear indication of the recombination enhancement, with respect of the fully relativistic RR calculations, was found for the K-shell for the zero relative electron energy. This results add new aspects to existing interpretations of the enhancement effect emphasizing a role of recombination into high Rydberg states.

The photon energy dependence of the double K-shell ionization cross sections for light atoms and He-like ions is reported. The K-shell double photoionization DPI cross-sections for hollow atom production are compared to those of the corresponding He-like counterparts. The relative contribution of the initial-state correlations and final-state electron-electron interactions to the K-shell DPI is addressed. A semiempirical universal scaling of the double photoionization cross sections with the effective nuclear charge for neutral atoms in the range 2 ≤ Z ≤ 47 is established.

We report on the application of synchrotron radiation based high-resolution grazing-emission x-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) method to measure low-level impurities on silicon wafers. The presented high-resolution GEXRF technique leads to direct detection limits of about 10¹² atoms/cm². The latter can be presumably further improved down to 10⁷ atoms/cm² by combining the synchrotron radiation-based GEXRF method with the vapor phase decomposition preconcentration technique. The capability of the high-resolution GEXRF method to perform surface-sensitive elemental mappings with a lateral resolution of several tens of micrometers was probed.

The structure of the odd‐odd 192Ir nucleus presents an interesting and challenging problem for both experimentalists and theorists. As a result of the common efforts of nine laboratories, it is possible, for the first time, to propose an extended scheme with 34 levels. The experiments included observation of γ‐ray transitions and of conversion electrons emitted after thermal and resonance neutron capture, of direct (d,p) and (d,t) neutron transfer reactions and of the angular distribution of γ‐rays from aligned 192Ir nuclei. The results are interpreted in the framework of the rotor‐plus‐particle and IBFFM models. The nuclear states appear to be strongly mixed. The complex and interesting ground‐state configuration is discussed.

How can the Newtonian gravitational constant G at the 0.1% accuracy level be measured in a student experiment? This article may help the reader in answering this question. The described improvements of a preexisting apparatus should be applicable to most student laboratories. Results based on direct deflection and swing‐time methods are presented. The corresponding sources of uncertainty and possible systematic errors are discussed.

The branching ratios for the γ-decay of the lowest states in the {π 7 2 + (404)±ν 5 2 − (512)}K π =1 ground-state band and Kπ=6−142 d isomeric rotational band have been measured following 176Yb(p, 3nγ)174 Lu excitation. These results are combined with known magnetic moments to deduce gyromagnetic factors. Anomalous values are evinced for the higher K-configuration.

The effects on the diffraction properties of the (1 1 0) quartz planes induced by the application of a static and alternating electric fields have been experimentally investigated. Increases of reflectivity are observed. An outline of the interpretation is given.

It has been observed that the reflectivity of the (110) planes of a quartz lamina can be increased by submitting it to a static or alternating electric field. Measurements have been performed on 2.5 and 6 mm thick plates using a curved-crystal spectrometer with DuMond geometry. Photon energies were in the range 50 to 300 keV. Under the proper conditions, the increase in reflectivity is accompanied by negligible loss in resolution. The effects are explained by the occurrence of a quasi-mosaicity.

Kα X-ray spectra were measured with a Du Mond type curves crystal spectrometer for42Mo and46Pd targets bombarded with oxygen ions at 5.5 MeV/u energy (i.e. at velocity closely matching those of the targetL-shell electrons). The distribution ofL-shell vacancies produced in collisions with simultaneousK-shell ionization is deduced from the measured yield distribution of theKα X-ray satellites. The distribution shows deviations from the binomial ones. The deviations can be accounted for by assuming that theL-shell vacancy production is due to two uncorrelated processes: the direct ionization by impact and the electron capture from theL-shell of the target atom into theK-shell of the projectile, both occurring at nearly central collisions. The corresponding probability values are deduced using simple statistical considerations.

An in-beam curved crystal spectrometer facility has been installed at the SIN variable energy cyclotron. The radius of curvature is 3.15 m. Using the (110) planes of different bent quartz laminas, diffraction peaks down to Δθ = 5 arcsec FWHM are obtained. The energy resolution is thus ΔE ⋍ 0.01 E 2 /n , where n is the diffraction order, ΔE being expressed in eV and E in keV. The spectrometer has been constructed to cover an angular range of ±10°. Transitions in the range 17 to about 350 keV have so far been observed. Measurements have been performed in conventional line source DuMond geometry and in slit geometry. The instrument is being used for the high-resolution observation of X- and gamma-rays induced by proton, helium- and oxygen-ion bombardment.

The nuclear levels in 174 Lu were investigated by means of 176 Yb(p, 3nγ) reaction spectroscopy. Standard germanium detector techniques as well as an on-line curved crystal spectrometer were used. Six well-developed rotational bands are observed. These results confirm and extend the scheme previously obtained by direct reactions. The presented data document a study on the anomalous g -factors of the 142 d isomeric band.

High-spin states in 162Tm and 164Tm have been studied by 152,154Sm(14N, 4n) reactions. Measurements of γ-rays, angular distributions and γγ-coincidences were performed using Ge detectors. In each isotope, two side bands are observed besides the yrast band, which are followed up to high-spin states. An interpretation of the experimental results is proposed in the framework of the cranked shell-model. Results on gyromagnetic ratios in the yrast band of a series of odd-N Tm nuclei are presented. Magnetic properties of the side bands are also discussed.

High-spin rotational states of 158,160,162,164Tm were investigated by in-beam γ-spectroscopy using the (14N, 4n) and (14N, 6n) reactions. The strongly-aligned band π[ h 11 2 ]ν[ i 13 2 ] has been observed in all these nuclei. Our experimental results, together with the data obtained by another group on 166Tm, are interpreted in the frame of a cranking-model analysis. The behaviour of the moment of inertia versus rotational frequency and the existence of a triaxial shape is discussed.
