The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) is an infrastructure for global analysis of extremely extended cosmic-ray phenomena, so-called super-preshowers, beyond the capabilities of existing, discrete, detectors and observatories. To date cosmic-ray research has been focused on detecting single air showers, while the search for ensembles of cosmic-ray events induced by super-preshowers is a scientific terra incognita - CREDO explores this uncharted realm. Positive detection of super-preshowers would have an impact on ultra-high energy astrophysics, cosmology and the physics of fundamental particle interactions as they can theoretically be formed within both classical (photon-photon interactions) and exotic (Super Heavy Dark Matter particle decay and interaction) scenarios. Some super-preshowers are predicted to have a significant spatial extent - a unique signature only detectable with the existing cosmic-ray infrastructure taken as a global network. An obvious, although yet unprobed, super-preshower 'detection limit' would be located somewhere between an air shower, induced by a super-preshower composed of tightly collimated particles, and a super-preshower composed of particles spread so widely that only few of them can reach the Earth. CREDO will probe this detection limit, leading to either an observation of an as yet unseen physical phenomenon, or the setting upper limits to the existence of large extraterrestrial cascades which would constrain fundamental physics models. While CREDO’s focus is on testing physics at energies close to the Grand Unified Theories range, the broader phenomena are expected to be composed of particles with energies ranging from GeV to ZeV. This motivates our advertising of this concept across the astroparticle physics community.

The main objective of the Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) is the detection and analysis of extended cosmic ray phenomena, so-called super-preshowers (SPS), using existing as well as new infrastructure (cosmic-ray observatories, educational detectors, single detectors etc.). The search for ensembles of cosmic ray events initiated by SPS is yet an untouched ground, in contrast to the current state-of-the-art analysis, which is focused on the detection of single cosmic ray events. Theoretical explanation of SPS could be given either within classical (e.g., photon-photon interaction) or exotic (e.g., Super Heavy Dark Matter decay or annihilation) scenarios, thus detection of SPS would provide a better understanding of particle physics, high energy astrophysics and cosmology. The ensembles of cosmic rays can be classified based on the spatial and temporal extent of particles constituting the ensemble. Some classes of SPS are predicted to have huge spatial distribution, a unique signature detectable only with a facility of the global size. Since development and commissioning of a completely new facility with such requirements is economically unwarranted and time-consuming, the global analysis goals are achievable when all types of existing detectors are merged into a worldwide network. The angular correlation functions for galaxies with magnitudes 20 less than b(sub J) less than 21.5 and 21 less than b(sub J) less than 22.5 are measured from photographic images of nine distinct fields. New expressions for the variance of correlation function estimates are used, which show that the nine fields are consistent with a single angular correlation function w(theta) and with previous estimates of its amplitude and slope -- though the errors on previously published w(theta) values are probably underestimated. Assuming a spatial correlation function of the form xi(r,z) = (r/r(sub 0))(exp -gamma)(1 + z)(exp -3-epsilon), and using the measured N(z) for these magnitude ranges, we derive xi(r = 250 kpc/h, z = 0.18) = 48 +/- 10, and xi(r = 250 kpc/h, z = 0.27) = 55(+11; -9) for galaxies in these samples, largely independent of gamma and epsilon (1 sigma errors). This is approximately 2 times lower than the small-scale clustering seen in nearby galaxies at b(sub J) less than 18 (after allowing for modest growth in clustering since z = 0.27), yet very similar to the clustering of the nearby IRAS-selected galaxy population. The correlations of the reddest third of the b(sub J) approximately 22 galaxies, however, are larger and consistent with the b(sub J) less than 18 clustering, not the IRAS clustering, for a clustering growth rate of epsilon equal to or greater than -1. Thus to b(sub J) less than 22.5, most of the apparent evolution in clustering of blue-selected galaxies appears to be due to an increasing fraction of late-type or star-forming galaxies at fainter magnitudes, combined with weaker small-scale clustering for late types. These conclusions are entirely empirical and independent of galaxy evolution models.

We have examined the images of 44,462 randomly chosen galaxies between 22.5 and 23.5 J apparent magnitude in 35 fields for a coherent ellipticity due to cosmological image distortion arising from inhomogeneity and anisotropy in the large-scale mass distribution of the universe. Galaxy alignments would also be expected in a rotating universe, due to vorticity. Our result for a large-scale ellipticity is null with a 3 sigma upper limit of e/sub max/

A system for detecting and classifying images on astronomical plates is described. In particular, the very faint and barely resolved images of 24th magnitude galaxies are shown to be detectable and distinguishable from stellar images of similar brightness. The algorithms and other implementation con-siderations used in the construction of FOCAS are given. Detection and classification at 24th magnitude is achieved with N2 presensitized IIIaJ plates exposed for one hour in the KPNO 4-m telescope prime focus camera. For a digital 6000x6000 pixel image made from the central square area 37' on a side approximately 16000 objects are found to 24.7 mag on such plates. Since the resulting catalog of objects is 3 or 4 magnitudes deeper than existing surveys a variety of internal tests must be used to assess the accuracy and completeness of the list of objects.
