Rapid advancements in nanotechnology have expanded its applications and synergistic impact on modern nanosystems. The comprehensive assessment of nanomaterials' safety for human exposure has become crucial and heightened. In addition to the characterization of cell proliferation and apoptosis, probing the implication of autophagy is vital for understanding the ramification of nanomaterials. Hence, HEK-293 kidney cells were employed to understand the changes in induction and perturbation of autophagy in cells by iron oxide (Fe3O4) and silica (SiO2) nanoparticles. Interestingly, Fe3O4 worked as a potent modulator of the autophagy process through its catalytic performance, which can develop better than that of SiO2 nanoparticles mechanism, stressing their therapeutic implication in the understanding of cell behaviors. The quantification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured along with the process of autophagy during cell growth. Air pollution is an environmental factor associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, characterized by decreased cognitive abilities and memory. The limited models of sporadic Alzheimer's disease fail to replicate all pathological hallmarks of the disease, making it challenging to uncover potential environmental causes. Environmentally driven models of Alzheimer's disease are thus timely and necessary. We used live-cell confocal fluorescent imaging combined with high-resolution stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy to follow the response of retinoic acid-differentiated human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells to nanomaterial exposure. Here, we report that exposure of the cells to some particulate matter constituents reproduces a neurodegenerative phenotype, including extracellular amyloid beta-containing plaques and decreased neurite length. Consistent with the existing in vivo research, we observed detrimental effects, specifically a substantial reduction in neurite length and formation of amyloid beta plaques, after exposure to iron oxide and diesel exhaust particles. Conversely, after exposure to engineered cerium oxide nanoparticles, the lengths of neurites were maintained, and almost no extracellular amyloid beta plaques were formed. Although the exact mechanism behind this effect remains to be explained, the retinoic acid differentiated SH-SY5Y cell in vitro model could serve as an alternative, environmentally driven model of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Cancer is one of the leading causes of global mortality, and its incidence is increasing annually. Neutron capture therapy (NCT) is a unique anticancer modality capable of selectively eliminating tumor cells within normal tissues. The development of accelerator-based, clinically mountable neutron sources has stimulated a worldwide search for new, more effective compounds for NCT. We synthesized magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) that concurrently incorporate boron and gadolinium, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of NCT. These magnetic nanoparticles underwent sequential modifications through silane polycondensation and allylamine graft polymerization, enabling the creation of functional amino groups on their surface. Characterization was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). ICP-AES measurements indicated that boron (B) content in the NPs reached 3.56 ppm/mg, while gadolinium (Gd) averaged 0.26 ppm/mg. Gadolinium desorption was observed within 4 h, with a peak rate of 61.74%. The biocompatibility of the NPs was confirmed through their relatively low cytotoxicity and sufficient cellular tolerability. Using NPs at non-toxic concentrations, we obtained B accumulation of up to 5.724 × 1010 atoms per cell, sufficient for successful NCT. Although limited by its content in the NP composition, the Gd amount may also contribute to NCT along with its diagnostic properties. Acroptilon repens is a widespread weed in Asia, and has a complicated taxonomy. Recent taxonomical treatment explored that Acroptilon species must be classified in the genus Rhaponticum. Therefore, the scientific name of this species has been converted into Rhaponticum repens. In the current study, essential oil composition, and its ability to green synthesis of iron nanoparticles for future use to adsorb Cr (VI) ions pollution of aquatic solution were evaluated for the first time. The GC-MS analysis revealed oxygenated monoterpenes constituted great proportion of the essential oil, with 1,8-cineole and camphor as the main essential oil components. Several appropriate methods, including UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, DLS, and VSM revealed the green synthesis of a mixture of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles by the extracted essential oil. Sizes of the produced nanoparticles were not equal and detected in the range of 3 to 50 nm, with an average size of 31.5 nm and the magnetic property of 15 emu/g. The green-synthesized nanoparticles could adsorb Cr (VI) ions pollution from aquatic solutions. However, under an optimum condition, the Cr (VI) ions adsorption capacity and removal were 167.6 mg/g and 91%, respectively. Findings revealed the major essential oil composition highly differed from those reported in the previous phytochemical studies. This work presents the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) using Baccharis salicifolia extract and their incorporation in mesoporous silica MCM-41, obtaining an MCM-41@IONP composite. The MCM-41@IONP composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nitrogen adsorption and desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The use of the natural reducing agent Baccharis salicifolia resulted in nanoparticles with an average size of 31 nm. Furthermore, we showcase the application of the MCM-41@IONP nanocomposite in a metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) diode, which was fabricated at room temperature. The current–voltage and capacitance–voltage curves of the MIS diode were carefully measured and subjected to detailed analysis. The results demonstrate the potential utility of MCM-41@IONP nanocomposite-based MIS diodes, suggesting their applicability in the design of biosensors or as discrete components in electronic devices. Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) are generally safer than non-aqueous analogues, they are also less-expensive, and more friendly to the environment. However, the inherent disadvantage of the narrow electrochemical window of H2O seriously restricts the energy density and output voltage of ARBs, especially aqueous rechargeable Fe-based batteries. Herein, we introduce a new battery system: the anode contains C@Fe/Fe2O3 composite, which is interfaced with an alkaline electrolyte; the cathode contains LiMn2O4 in contact with a neutral electrolyte. A Li+-conducting membrane is carefully selected to decouple the electrode-electrolyte, which effectively widens the electrochemical window to above 2.65 V, thereby enables an aqueous rechargeable iron battery. Its average output voltage is 1.83 V and its energy density is 235.3 Wh/kg at 549 W/kg. In this work, we propose the energy storage mechanism with the aid of density functional theory (DFT). The calculated reduction potential of the anode agrees with the experimental value. Furthermore, this battery system demonstrates long cycle lifespan of approximately 2500 cycles at 2 A/g, corresponding to a capacity retention of 82.1%. These results are very far superior than those of mainstream aqueous rechargeable Fe-based batteries, which guarantee future investigation for storing electricity energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of iron nanoparticles is one of the most researched areas in recent times due to the potential applications they have and because the study of iron by XPS is one of the most debated elements. In this work, we provide investigation data of iron oxide nanoparticles produced using the laser ablation technique, which were characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Survey spectra, C 1s, O 1s, and Fe 2p core levels spectra were acquired. Results showed the presence of Fe+3 and Fe+2 elements that constitute hematite and magnetite with differences in their concentrations depending on the fitting method. The investigation and clarification of the properties of surface-functionalized superparamagnetic nanoparticles in a biological environment are key challenges prior to their medical applications. In the present work, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) combined with the spin labeling technique was utilized to better understand the behavior of nitroxides attached to magnetite nanoparticles dispersed in body fluid. EPR spectra of spin-labeled, silane-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles in human serum and whole blood were recorded and analyzed for both room- and low-temperature values. In all cases, the obtained EPR signal consisted of a broad line from magnetite cores and a characteristic signal from the attached 4-Amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (4-amino-TEMPO). Even for liquid samples, the anisotropic components of magnetic tensors did not fully average out, which was reflected in the differences in the intensity of three narrow hyperfine lines from nitroxide. At 230 K the irregular slow-motion signal from the attached radical was also simulated using the EasySpin toolbox, which allowed to determine the parameters related to magnetic tensors and the dynamics of the spin label. The study showed that the anisotropy of the motion of the spin label 4-amino-TEMPO reflects its interactions with the surrounding medium and the manner of the attachment of the nitroxide to the surface of nanoparticles. Jian kiln oil-spot glaze is one of the most typical iron crystal precipitation glazes in ancient China, and it is important to clarify the influence of iron oxide on precipitation glazes coloration and crystal precipitation, to provide a scientific basis and theoretical guidance for the development and innovation of iron crystal precipitation glazes with a variety of coloration effects. In this paper, XRD, Raman, SEM and EDS testing methods were used to investigate the microstructure of the precipitated crystals in glaze melt and the change rules of glaze coloration with different iron oxide content, and to reveal the mechanism of the glaze crystal structure on coloration. The results show that with the increase of iron oxide content, the glaze surface precipitates brownish-yellow, silver-blue, silver-white, silver-white and reddish-brown crystal spots, and the crystal spots are colored by chemical color and structural color coupling effect of crystals. The iron enrichment in the middle area of crystal spot is higher than that in edge area, and the phase change from ε-Fe2O3 to α-Fe2O3 takes place preferentially, forming different color effects. The middle area first precipitates 2 ~ 4 µm leaf-shaped ε-Fe2O3 crystals, with brownish yellow. With the increase of iron oxide content, the glaze layer precipitates with the glaze surface parallel to the directional arrangement of rod-shaped α-Fe2O3 crystals to form crystalline thin film, which produces a strong reflection of light, being silver-white. When the iron oxide continues to increase, the glaze precipitation of 10 ~ 20 µm dendritic α-Fe2O3 crystals penetrates the crystalline thin film, the structural color (silver) produced by the film is weakened, and the chemical color of α-Fe2O3 (reddish brown) is enhanced. The coupling is silver-white with reddish brown. The edge area first precipitates a large number of 30 ~ 50 nm grains, resulting in Rayleigh scattering as blue. With the increase of iron oxide content, the surface layer of rod-like crystals also forms a crystal film and the lower layer of film precipitates 100 ~ 200 nm plate nanocrystals to form amorphous photonic crystals. In this study, Fe3O4/Ag magnetite-silver (MSx) nanocomposites were investigated as catalysts for advanced oxidation processes by coupling the plasmonic effect of silver nanoparticles and the ferromagnetism of iron oxide species. A surfactant-free co-precipitation synthesis method yielded pure Fe3O4 magnetite and four types of MSx nanocomposites. Their characterisation included structural, compositional, morphological and optical analyses, revealing Fe3O4 magnetite and Ag silver phases with particle sizes ranging from 15 to 40 nm, increasing with the silver content. The heterostructures with silver reduced magnetite particle aggregation, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering. The UV–Vis spectra showed that the Fe:Ag ratio strongly influenced the absorbance, with a strong absorption band around 400 nm due to the silver phase. The oxidation kinetics of organic pollutants, monitored by in situ luminescence measurements using rhodamine B as a model system, demonstrated the higher performance of the developed catalysts with increasing Ag content. The specific surface area measurements highlighted the importance of active sites in the synergistic catalytic activity of Fe3O4/Ag nanocomposites in the photo-Fenton reaction. Finally, the straightforward fabrication of diverse Fe3O4/Ag heterostructures combining magnetism and plasmonic effects opens up promising possibilities for heterogeneous catalysis and environmental remediation. Thermal decomposition of iron oleate is a simple and widespread method for synthesizing monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) with well‐defined morphology. However, the complexity of the underlying mechanism makes this method rather sensitive to variations in experimental conditions, and the lack of simple techniques to monitor the reaction progress in situ usually results in poor reproducibility and time‐consuming optimizations. Here, a simple, robust, and versatile in situ marker to monitor particle formation based on a sudden change in the temperature during reflux is reported. A linear relationship between the onset of particle formation and the concentration of surfactants is unveiled, corroborating a ‘chemically activated’ burst nucleation mechanism. Using this linear relationship as a guide, highly uniform spherical, cubic, and star‐shaped particles between 12 and 30 nm can be obtained. This temperature marker and the derived linear relationship not only deepen the understanding of the reaction process, but also provide a powerful tool for the straightforward optimization of IONPs. The redox properties of Feaq2+ -iron oxide heterogeneous systems play an important role in the environmental behaviors of heavy metal and organic pollutants. However, the determination of Eh for heterogeneous systems is still challenging due to the redox equilibration between the electrode and suspension is sluggish. In this study, goethite was chosen as the representative of iron oxide in the aquifer. Both mediated and nonmediated potential methods were conducted to obtain the Eh of Feaq2+ -goethite heterogeneous system through the optimizing of measurement conditions. Moreover, the effect of the working electrode surface state, the kind of mediators, and the equilibrium time on the Eh measurement were investigated. The results indicated that the working electrode surface state, the suitable mediators, and the establishment of equilibrium were crucial for obtaining accurate Eh. Compared with the non-mediated potentiometric method, the mediated method can shorten the determination time, but the appropriate mediator must be chosen. In non-mediated potentiometric method, the equilibrium between the working electrode and goethite must be established. The standard redox potential (Eh0 ) of goethite with different particle sizes was obtained, which demonstrated the practicability of this method. The results provide the method for the Eh measurement of mineral heterogeneous systems, and also provide theoretical support for predicting the pollutant abiotic attenuation rate induced by Feaq2+ -iron oxide heterogeneous systems. In recent years, electronic devices with trendy flexibility and compatibility have become the competitive alternative to conventional electronics. In the present work, flexible polymer nanocomposite films composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), iron oxide, and strontium titanate (PVDF-HFP/SrTiO3/Fe2O3) were synthesized by the solution-casting method. The formation and structural features of this composite material have been analyzed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric (TGA), and SEM. SEM results confirm the homogeneous dispersion of SrTiO3 and Fe2O3 within the host polymer. The uniform dispersion of the embedded metal species enhances the dielectric values up to 462 on optimization with infused rigidity. The impedance studies of PVDF-HFP/SrTiO3/Fe2O3 were performed in the temperature region of 50–150 °C at various frequencies ranging from 50 Hz to 10 MHz and the AC conductivity studies suggested that synthesized polymer nanocomposite shows higher conductivity with the maximum conductivity value was 8.20 × 10−3S/m. Polymer nanocomposite films with large dielectric constant and minimum dielectric loss are highly recommendable for flexible energy storage applications. This article presents the findings of a study on oxide reduction utilizing a novel reducing plasma torch, employing greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4 as plasma gases. The primary aim of this investigation is to establish the viability of this approach. The innovative plasma torch was employed to reduce various oxides, including aluminum oxide, iron oxide, and titanium oxide, as well as a mixed oxide composition, employing a CO2/CH4 molar ratio of 1:1 within a spouted bed reactor. Following plasma treatment, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was conducted to examine the metallic phases, notably titanium, iron, and aluminum. SEM–EDS observations were carried out to assess microstructural changes and identify elemental compositions pre- and post-plasma treatment. The results demonstrate that within the conical section of the reactor, titanium oxide experiences partial reduction, resulting in limited titanium production, while aluminum oxide and iron oxides (magnetite and hematite) undergo reduction to yield aluminum and iron, respectively. Thermodynamic calculations, performed using Factsage software version 8.3, were utilized to predict stable-phase formations following plasma treatment for each material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferrofluids based on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have been widely studied as multipurpose agents in various medical applications including magnetic hyperthermia, targeted drug delivery and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To increase their stability and compatibility with the living cells and thus improve their suitability for these purposes, the IONPs are often functionalized with different organic or inorganic molecules. In this work we report on the preparation of polyvinilpyrrolidone (PVP) functionalized IONPs through a simple co-precipitation method and investigated their suitability for magnetic hyperthermia and as a MRI contrast agent. Spherical PVP-coated IONPs, with an average particle size of ≈ 15 nm, showed superparamagnetic behavior and high saturation magnetization Ms = 80.7 emug−1, at room temperature. The specific absorption rate (SAR), a measure of the heating ability, ranged from 17 W/g to 721 W/g (evaluated for various combinations of AC magnetic field amplitudes and frequencies), while the intrinsic loss power (ILP) was in the range from 0.53 nHm2 kg−1 to 2.34 nHm2 kg−1. In addition to relatively good heating ability, high T2 relaxivity, r2 = 126 mM−1 s−1 and high r2/r1 ratio demonstrated that the preparation procedure used here can yield nanoparticles suitable for MRI guided localized magnetic hyperthermia. The photocatalysis technology is widely applied for effective degradation of environmental contaminants. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of heat-treated iron oxide nanoparticles photocatalysts in the photocatalytic degradation of oxalic acid. To provide a comprehensive characterization of the photocatalysts, a range of techniques were utilized. These techniques included transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the analysis of particle morphology, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for the calculation of the energy bandgap, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis for the determination of surface area, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the identification of crystal structure. The catalyst that was produced demonstrated an increased specific surface area, as well as a band gap of 2.2 eV. These characteristics provide a basis for understanding its photocatalytic performance. This work additionally examines the phenomenon of oxalic acid adsorption on iron oxide nanoparticles that have undergone heat treatment at different temperatures, employing Operando ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Following this, the same approach is used to investigate the photocatalytic breakdown of the adsorbed oxalic acid. Subsequently, a study was undertaken to examine the surface electronic configuration of iron oxide nanoparticles that had undergone heat treatment. This analysis employed Fe–L edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the total electron yield (TEY) mode. It yielded valuable insights regarding the distribution of Fe3+/Fe2+ sites on the surface of the nanoparticles. The presence of Fe2+/Fe3+ ions are determined using operando ATR—FTIR spectroscopy, by analyzing the adsorption of oxalic acid onto the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles. The sample subjected to low-heat treatment showed an improved effectiveness in absorbing the oxalic acid, which is related to the presence of Fe2+ sites. The photocatalytic process was further investigated using quantitative analysis methods, namely through kinetic studies. The observed kinetics followed a pseudo first- order model, with a rate constant of 0.010 M−1S−1. The low heat-treated nanoparticles shows greater photocatalytic rate constant and these results highlight the efficient and quick degradation capabilities of these nanoparticles. A commercial activated carbon (AC) was modified through iron oxide incorporation to obtain microwave absorbers (MWAs) for microwave-assisted pyrolysis. The influence of iron oxide content (5 and 20 wt% Fe3O4) and the modification methods were tested as follows: (1) in situ co-precipitation + washing step with Milli-Q; (2) in situ co-precipitation + washing step with Milli-Q/ethanol; and (3) physical iron oxide blending. The resulting MWAs were evaluated on the microwave-assisted pyrolysis of hardwood in a Milestone Flexiwave microwave reactor. The biochar yield varied from 24 wt% to 89 wt% and was influenced by the modification method rather than the iron oxide addition. The MWAs with physically blended iron oxide resulted in biochar yields comparable to conventional biochar (450 °C). Furthermore, the addition of iron oxide-activated carbon composites during the microwave-assisted pyrolysis caused a significant decrease in the biochar's 16 EPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, mainly by reducing the amount of pyrene in the biochar. The fracture surface of rail K76F steel after static bending tests of rail butt joints produced by flash-butt welding was studied. Butt joints of rails of individual batches were fractured on the base metal or heat-affected zone (HAZ). It is shown that in the regions of dark colour and oval shape, the fracture on the iron oxide film takes place. The formation of films occurs as a result of melting and distribution of iron oxide inclusions along the structural boundaries probably in the thermo-deformation conditions of the crimping shop at the stage of blooming production. The formation of clusters of iron oxides occurs during the crystallization of the residual melt in steel ingots with an insufficient degree of deoxidation. Oval regions of dark colour on the fracture surface are evidence of an insufficient degree of deoxidation of rail steel and a factor of its quality reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron oxide-modified 1Pd0.5Fe and 1Pd10Fe catalysts with a target content of 1 wt % Pd and 0.5 or 10 wt % Fe have been synthesized by the wet impregnation of Al2O3 with iron and palladium nitrates. The catalysts have been compared with each other and with a monometallic 1Pd catalyst in diclofenac (DCF) hydrodechlorination (HDC) in dilute aqueous solutions at 30°C in batch and flow reactors after high-temperature (320°C) and mild reduction (30°C), the latter being run in a batch or flow reactor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has revealed that, after reduction at 320°C, the catalysts contain mostly Pd0, Fe2+, and Fe3+. The Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio on the surface increases with a decrease in the iron content. The reduction of Pd2+ to Pd0 can occur even at 30°C; however, on the 1Pd0.5Fe surface, it is significantly less effective than that on 1Pd10Fe. According to XPS, temperature-programmed reduction, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, modification with iron oxides leads to an increase in the palladium content on the surface compared with that on 1Pd, contributes to the formation of new Pd–O–Fe sites, and affects the reducibility of palladium. These effects enhance with an increase in the iron content. The iron-modified catalysts reduced at 320°C exhibit similar activity and stability in DCF conversion in flow and batch systems. The 1Pd10Fe catalyst, unlike 1Pd0.5Fe, is highly efficient and stable even after mild reduction at 30°C. Under flow conditions, it provides a DCF conversion comparable to that provided by 1Pd and a selectivity in the DCF HDC reaction that is higher than that provided by 1Pd, which is also active in hydrogenation. The iron industry is the largest energy-consuming manufacturing sector in the world, emitting 4–5% of the total carbon dioxide (CO2). The development of iron-based systems for CO2 capture and storage could effectively contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. A wide set of different iron oxides, such as hematite (Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), and wüstite (Fe(1−y)O) could in fact be employed for CO2 capture at room temperature and pressure upon an investigation of their capturing properties. In order to achieve the most functional iron oxide form for CO2 capture, starting from Fe2O3, a reducing agent such as hydrogen (H2) or carbon monoxide (CO) can be employed. The presence of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) in water bodies at low concentrations is creating many problems for human health and different aquatic organisms. In this manuscript, we synthesised magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) modified activated carbon (AC) derived from sky fruit by co-precipitation process for the removal of EBT dye from an aqueous solution. The structural features of the synthesised materials were analysed by utilising X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). To know the optimum value for EBT dye adsorption, we performed various parameters such as initial dye concentration was 20 mg/L, adsorbent dosage was 100 mg, stirring time was 350 rpm, contact time was 60 min and pH was 4. The isotherm model was well-fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.99). The adsorption capacity was found to be 49.48 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic model was well-fitted with the Pseudo-second-order model. In this research article, the adsorption mechanism was critically investigated. The adsorbent can be reusable after 5 cycles with 61.45%, which signifies that the adsorbent is a promising choice for EBT dye removal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, pure iron oxide nanostructures were prepared by a physical method (laser-induced plasma) inside a vacuum using a second harmonic laser Nd: YAG with a wavelength of 532 nm, a laser energy of 500 mJ and a number of pulses of 300 pulses per second. The effect of the plasma generated from argon gas under normal atmospheric pressure was studied using a "cold plasma jet" system with an output voltage of 13 kV and a frequency of 50 Hz. Iron oxide nanostructures were exposed to cold plasma for different periods. The optical and structural properties of the nanostructures were measured before and after exposure, and there was a clear change in them, thus improving the properties of the nanostructures for use in industrial applications such as gas sensors, photovoltaic cells, diodes, detectors, and solar cells. The objective of this research is to manufacture new filter pellets based on polyacrylamide (PAM) activated carbon (GAC), iron oxide (Fe2O3), zinc oxide (ZnO) and kaolin and to evaluate their effectiveness in removing chromium and nickel from water. The synthesized filter pellets were characterized by FTIR, XRD and X-ray fluorescence. The XRF validation method would involve known amounts of chromium and nickel being retained by the filter pellets. the application of XRF gave precise measurements of the concentrations of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) fixed in the filter pellets. It was found that the values of the retention rates of Cr(VI) ions are higher in comparison with Ni(II) ions .The inclusion of inorganic additives influences the ability of filter pellets (FP) to retain Cr(VI) and Ni(II). FP2 (ZnO) showed reduced retention for both ions in comparison to FP1 (Fe2O3) and FP3 (Kaolin). FP3 (Kaolin) displayed better retention capacities for Cr(VI) and Ni(II) ions. The conductometric approach was also used to evaluate the retention of ions by the filter pellets. Comparing the conductivity of the feed solution with that of the filtered solution and the comparison between the different materials provided information on the most effective filter pellets for this purpose. The synthesis of novel catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, by means of a fast one-pot microwave-assisted procedure, is reported herein and deeply explained. In particular, the important role of doping atoms, like sulfur and nitrogen, in Fe2O3-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites is described to address the modification of catalytic performance. The presence of dopants is confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis, while the integration of iron oxide nanoparticles, by means of decoration of the graphene structure, is corroborated by electron microscopy, which also confirms that there is no damage to the graphene sheets induced by the synthesis procedure. The electrochemical characterizations put in evidence the synergistic catalysis effects of dopant atoms with Fe2O3 and, in particular, the importance of sulfur introduction into the graphene lattice. A consensus has not yet been reached on effects of climate change and driving mechanisms between the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and adjacent monsoonal areas during the Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3). Loess–paleosol sequences from the TP provide valuable information about the MIS 3 environmental history. Detailed color index and a diffuse reflectance spectral (DRS) analysis of Zhouqu (ZQ) loess from the Western Qinling Mountains were conducted to investigate climate change on the eastern margin of the TP during the MIS 3. Our results show that the variations in color index and iron oxide content in ZQ loess are mainly caused by the pedogenesis and climate conditions. The lightness (L*) value and hematite (Hm) content were used to reconstruct the precipitation history and temperature changes, respectively. The reconstructed records revealed that climate change during the MIS 3 was characterized by high frequency and large amplitude, with millennial-scale changes superimposed on orbital-scale changes. Warm–humid climate occurred in the late MIS 3, while the early climate of MIS 3 was relatively cold–dry. The Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and temperature variations during the MIS 3 mainly occurred due to obliquity and precession. The North Atlantic cooling led to the southward movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and the downstream cooling of the atmosphere by the westerly jet could result in events on a millennial-scale in the eastern margin of the TP. The work reported here deals with fabricating iron oxide nanoparticles incorporated polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposite films via the solution‐casting green route, characterized using various characterization techniques. X‐ray diffraction analysis shows interaction of nanoparticles with the polyvinyl alcohol matrix, scanning electron microscopy shows surface morphology of crack‐free films, energy dispersive spectroscopy indicates elemental purity, tensiometer analysis shows changing behavior of hydrophilic to hydrophobic, thermogravimetric analysis shows improved thermal stability, ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy shows tunable optical properties, and frequency response analysis shows improved electrical properties. A small incorporation (1 wt. %) of iron oxide nanoparticles has induced significant alternations in structural, wetting, thermal, optical, and electrical properties of the polyvinyl alcohol‐based nanocomposite films. Results showed notable changes in the structural phases, water contact angle (39.5° to 97.7°), optical absorption edge (5.12 eV to 4.84 eV), indirect band gap (4.99 eV to 4.68 eV), direct bandgap (5.41 eV to 5.21 eV), and band tail (0.57 eV to 0.89 eV) from native polyvinyl alcohol to polyvinyl alcohol/iron oxide nanocomposite films. Enhancements were observed in refractive indices, optical conductivity, optical dielectric loss, thermal stability, dielectric constant, and dielectric loss on incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles into the polyvinyl alcohol matrix. Standard materials are often used to obtain spectra that can be compared to those from unknown samples. Spectra measured from these known substances are also used as a means of computing sensitivity factors to allow quantification by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of less well‐defined materials. Spectra from known materials also provide line shapes suitable for inclusion in spectral models which, when fitted to spectra, permit the chemical state for a sample to be assessed. Both types of information depend on isolating photoemission signals from the inelastically scattered signal. In this Insight note, technical issues associated with the use of XPS of as received Fe3O4 powder sample surface are discussed. The Insight note is designed to show how linear algebraic techniques applied to data collected from a sample marketed as pure Fe3O4 powder are used to verify that XPS has been performed on chemistry representative of the sample. The methods described in this Insight note can further be utilized in elucidating complex XPS data obtained from thin films formed or evolved during cyclic/non‐steady use of complex (electro)catalyst surfaces, especially in the presence of contaminants. Iron oxide-based ferrite ceramics, widely applied in high-frequency applications, are conventionally produced through high-temperature sintering processes, often resulting in grain growth and phase transformation. In this study, we used a cold sintering process (CSP) with oxalic acid (OA) as a solvent to consolidate iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4) ceramics at a low temperature of 160 °C. The OA-assisted CSP technique has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to facilitate the dissolution and redeposition of iron oxide ions, leading to the interconnection of Fe 3 O 4 particles, forming densely packed ceramics even at low-temperature sintering. Importantly, CSP maintained particle sizes and hindered phase transitions of Fe 3 O 4. The OA concentrations in CSP had a minimal impact on crystal structure and magnetic properties, but it significantly enhanced microstructural features, density, hardness, and electrical resistance. Compared to reference samples prepared without an aqueous solution or with water alone, the CSP-prepared Fe 3 O 4 ceramics with OA exhibited substantially improved density (a relative density of ∼80 %), mechanical properties (Vickers hardness of 3.5–4.0 GPa), magnetic properties (saturation magnetization >70 emu/g), and electrical resistance (electrical conductivity ∼10−3 S/cm at 102–106 Hz). These findings demonstrate a novel approach to fabricating Fe 3 O 4 ceramics at significantly lower temperatures while still achieving properties comparable to those sintered at high temperatures. The iron (III) Schiff base complex was immobilized on magnetic silica as well as mesoporous silica substrates and characterized by XRD, TEM, FT-IR, AAS, VSM techniques, and in the case of mesoporous silica, it was also identified with N2 adsorption/desorption and TGA methods. These materials were applied for oxidation of benzyl alcohols and sulfides with hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant. The effect of catalyst structures was studied in the mentioned reactions. The results showed that using of mesoporous silica in the oxidation of sulfides and benzyl alcohols with hydrogen peroxide in the optimal reaction conditions provided a higher catalytic yield in the same or even less reaction time. The higher catalytic performance of the mesoporous substrate based on the identifications (carried out by N2 adsorption/desorption technique) can be attributed to the higher surface area of this substrate and the stronger connection of the Schiff base complex of iron (III) to the mesoporous silica (according to leaching test). Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles immobilized on microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) are studied for the adsorption of Pb(II) ions from an aqueous solution. Composites of iron oxide and MCC were synthesized with a 5%–20% loading of iron (w/w%). The effect of pH, concentration, and contact time was studied. The adsorption isotherms were fitted to nonlinear Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D‐R) isotherms, and kinetics were studied for pseudo‐first and second‐order kinetic fit models. Adsorption of Pb(II) ions increased with increasing pH value up to 5. The composition and magnetic properties of foraminifers from bottom sediments of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and their artificial analogs obtained by hydrothermal synthesis were studied. The presence of magnetic hysteresis and theoretical modeling of hysteresis characteristics made it possible to assume the presence of grains of nonstoichiometric magnetite in single- and few-domain states. ABSTRACT The application of rock dust (RD) in agricultural soils has shown the capacity to improve soil conditions for plant growth. However, the successful use of RD requires understanding its effects on weathering in soil surfaces and its possible products. In this study, we present the results of an exploratory test in which a RD had its weathering intensified in a soil column by temperature (45 °C) and intense leaching (1,339.2 mm in 24 weeks), in the absence of plants. There was a significant increase in amorphous phases of iron (Fe) and particularly of aluminum (Al) to the amount of 0.13 g kg –1 for Fe and 0.16 g kg –1 for Al in the 0-0.05 m layer of the column and 0.22 g kg –1 for Al in the 0.05-0.10 m layer. These values account for 6 % of the total Fe, and 27 % of the total Al added as RD in the column. Spectral features in the visible-near infrared-short wave infrared (VIS-NIR-SWIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) range, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) scans, were inconclusive because of the small signal-noise ratio of the newly precipitated phases. Selective chemical methods targeted to specific soil pools (precipitated, adsorbed, and leached) were more sensitive to capture the new amorphous phases resulting from the RD dissolution. This study contributes to understanding the effects of RD on the availability of ions and the possibility of amorphous oxides precipitating in the soil. In addition, it helps identify other effects associated with using RD, such as changes in the pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and nutrient availability.

Self-compacting concrete is regarded as one of the newest types of concrete due to its durability, efficiency, viscosity, stability, flowability, and resistance. Today, one of the most pressing environmental challenges is the disposal of solid waste, and one of the plastic materials discarded as waste after use is plastic packaging belts. These are made on the basis of polypropylene, as well as the factory Iron smelting mines are the main source of iron oxide waste production. Studies using recycled plastic fibers (30 mm × 0.3 mm) and waste iron oxide as cost-effective additives in self-compacting concrete (SCC) are presented. The effects on fresh and hardened properties were evaluated at various additive contents. Fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) were evaluated with and without fiber and iron oxide additives. Tests included workability (slump flow, funnel), strength (compressive, tensile), and durability (ultrasonic pulse speed, permeability). Experiments revealed that increasing the amount of recycled plastic fibers and waste iron oxide in self-compacting concrete (SCC) led to higher compressive and tensile strengths at both 7 and 28 days. These strength increases ranged from 2 to 9.68 MPa for compressive strength and 1.61–7.44 MPa for tensile strength, compared to the control specimen without additives.

Essential properties for a Point of Use (POU) water filter include maintaining high removal capacity and rate, with excellent mechanical properties to withstand pressure drop. Herein, mechanically robust tri-composite polyamide 6/iron oxide nanoparticles/tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (PA6/α-Fe2O3/TBAB) nanofiber composite membranes were electrospun for phosphate (P) remediation, where the diameter and composition were tuned by controlling solution compositions and electrospinning conditions. Tri-composite composition and morphology affect phosphate uptake where the adsorption capacity followed Langmuir isotherm whereas the adsorption kinetics followed pseudo second order behavior. Mechanical properties (i.e., Young’s Modulus (E) and toughness) were significantly influenced by the composition and morphology of the tri-composite, as well. Although additional TBAB and iron oxide decreased toughness, there are optimum composition ranges which resulted in maximum Young’s Modulus. Of the synthesized nanofiber membranes, PA6/α-Fe2O3/TBAB nanofibers with 17% α-Fe2O3 and 2% TBAB showed excellent phosphate uptake capacity [i.e., 8.9 mg/g (52 mg of P/g of α-Fe2O3)] while it is bendable, stretchable, and able to plastically deform without fracturing (i.e., Young’s modulus of 2.06 × 108 Pa and Toughness of 1.35 × 106 J m−3). With concerns over the impact of P on water resources and the long-term availability of limited P resources, this tri-composite membrane is well suited for applications in both wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

The research work explored the influence of iron doping on the optical behavior, structural characteristics, and radiation shielding capabilities of soda lime borophosphate glass system of composition xFe2O3-(42.5-x)B2O3-26CaO-28.7Na2O-2.8P2O5 (x up to 8 mol%). The glass samples doped with varying iron concentrations were synthesized via the conventional melt-quenching method. A comprehensive characterization approach was employed, integrating X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to probe the structural aspects, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to examine the molecular vibrations and bonding, and UV–visible spectroscopic techniques to investigate the optical properties. Furthermore, the study evaluated the potential of these iron-doped glasses as effective radiation shielding materials by assessing their attenuation performance against various radiation types. The influence of iron oxide (Fe2O3) addition on the borophosphate network, coordination environment, and optical absorption was examined. The radiation shielding characteristics, such as mass attenuation coefficient, half-value layer, mean free path, and other parameters, were assessed using Phy-x freeware program calculations. The results revealed the formation of an amorphous glass structure and the incorporation of iron ions into the borophosphate network. The addition of Fe2O3 influenced the borate superstructural units, the conversion of BO3 to BO4 units, and the optical absorption bands. The glasses exhibited promising radiation shielding properties combined with increasing Fe2O3 content.

Abstract Structured adsorbents have gained significant importance in gas separation applications due to their ability to fine‐tune mass and heat transfer and lower pressure drop across the bed. This study presents a ferromagnetic compressible hybrid structured adsorbent, allowing regeneration via magnetic induction heating. A compressible melamine sponge is coated with the CO2‐selective Ni‐MOF‐74 adsorbent and Fe3O4 as a ferromagnetic susceptor, capable of dissipating heat instantaneously in an alternating electromagnetic field. Taking advantage of these properties, the potential of rapid CO2 capture and thermal regeneration via magnetic induction swing adsorption is investigated. The successful incorporation of both ingredients on the melamine sponge is confirmed via SEM‐EDX and XRD analysis. Breakthrough experiments with a CO2/CH4‐mixture are performed. The selective property of Ni‐MOF‐74 toward CO2 is retained, with the composite showing a capacity of 1.89 mmol CO2/g. The compressible nature of the melamine sponge allowed for an improvement of 79% in the volumetric capacity of the adsorbent bed and a higher heating rate. In regard to regeneration, within 1 min of subjecting the structured composite to the alternating magnetic field, an efficient desorption (>90%) of CO2 is achieved. Overall, a ferromagnetic compressible hybrid structured adsorbent is presented for fast cyclic gas‐phase separation processes.

The morphological features and chemical composition of iron oxides in the beach deposits of the northwestern part of the Sea of Azov were studied on the basis of research materials of 2016-2020, using a scanning electron microscope with an integrated electron-probe analysis system. The chemical composition of iron oxides varies from Fe39O86 to Fe17O8. Most of the individuals surveyed are stoichiometric iron (III) oxide Fe2O3, but only a few of them have morphological features of the natural hematite, usually martite. The vast majority of Fe2O3 individuals and other individuals in the whole range of the chemical composition have specific morphological features of technogenic compounds and generally are ferrous dross particles formed during the rolled steel process. The sharp predominance of the technogenic component of iron oxides in the black sands is an important fact that witnesses the powerful man9made pressure on the ecosystems of the Azov Sea.

Iron oxide nanoparticles has attracted extensively due to their supermagnetic properties, preferred in biomedicine because of their biocompatibility and potential nontoxicity to human beings. Synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) was prepared with the help of ferric chloride and ferrous sulphate by using the coprecipitation method. The variation and combination of ferric and ferrous concentrations affect the physical and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles. The effect of 0.1 M ferric and ferrous concentration on iron oxide nanoparticles studied separately and in combination. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by Particle size, zeta potential, Ultraviolet (UV-visible), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and Vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. Particle size was below 200nm and zeta potential was within the limit for all the batches. UV visible spectra at 224 nm, and FTIR exhibit two peaks at 510 and 594 cm-1, indicating iron oxide NPs and XRD confirmed the crystalline nature of Fe. SEM showed a spherical shape for all batches. The use of a combination of ferric and ferrous is more effective than its individual use. TGA and VSM studies confirmed its magnetic properties.

Organonitrates (ON) and nitroxy-organosulfates (NOS) are important components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Gas-phase reactions of α-pinene (C10H16), a primary precursor for several ON compounds, are fairly well understood although formation pathways for NOS largely remain unknown. NOS formation may occur via reactions of ON and organic peroxides with sulfates as well as through radical-initiated photochemical processes. Despite the fact that organosulfates (OS) represent a significant portion of the organic aerosol mass, ON and NOS formation from OS is less understood, especially through nighttime heterogeneous and multiphase chemistry pathways. In the current study, surface reactions of adsorbed α-pinene-derived OS with nitrogen oxides on hematite and kaolinite surfaces, common components of mineral dust, have been investigated. α-Pinene reacts with sulfated mineral surfaces, forming a range of OS compounds on the surface. These OS compounds when adsorbed on mineral surfaces can further react with HNO3 and NO2, producing several ON and NOS compounds as well as several oxidation products. Overall, this study reveals the complexity of reactions of prevalent organic compounds leading to the formation of OS, ON, and NOS via heterogeneous and multiphase reaction pathways on mineral surfaces. It is also shown that this chemistry is mineralogy-specific.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has attracted much attention in tumor-targeted drug delivery due to its ability to specifically bind to the CD44 cellular receptor, which is widely expressed on cancer cells. We present HA-capped magnetic nanoparticles (HA-MNPs) obtained via the co-precipitation method, followed by the electrostatic adsorption of HA onto the nanoparticles' surfaces. A theoretical study carried out with the PM3 method evidenced a dipole moment of 3.34 D and negatively charged atom groups able to participate in interactions with nanoparticle surface cations and surrounding water molecules. The ATR-FTIR spectrum evidenced the hyaluronic acid binding to the surface of the ferrophase, ensuring colloidal stability in the water dispersion. To verify the success of the synthesis and stabilization, HA-MNPs were also characterized using other investigation techniques: TEM, EDS, XRD, DSC, TG, NTA, and VSM. The results showed that the HA-MNPs had a mean physical size of 9.05 nm (TEM investigation), a crystallite dimension of about 8.35 nm (XRD investigation), and a magnetic core diameter of about 8.31 nm (VSM investigation). The HA-MNPs exhibited superparamagnetic behavior, with the magnetization curve showing saturation at a high magnetic field and a very small coercive field, corresponding to the net dominance of single-domain magnetic nanoparticles that were not aggregated with reversible magnetizability. These features satisfy the requirement for magnetic nanoparticles with a small size and good dispersibility for long-term stability. We performed some preliminary tests regarding the nanotoxicity in the environment, and some chromosomal aberrations were found to be induced in corn root meristems, especially in the anaphase and metaphase of mitotic cells. The phase equilibria of the ZnO-"FeO 1..5 ", ZnO-"FeO 1.5 "-SiO 2 , PbO–ZnO-"FeO 1.5 " and PbO–ZnO-"FeO 1.5 "-SiO 2 slag systems in equilibrium with air or metallic lead/iron were studied as part of the investigation of the 19-component PbO–ZnO–Cu 2 O–FeO–Fe 2 O 3 –CaO–SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 –MgO–S-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Cr, Co as minor elements) slag/matte/metal/speiss/gas system, supporting the operation/development of existing and emerging pyrometallurgical processes. In the experimental part of the study, samples underwent high temperature equilibration followed by quenching, and the direct measurement of the lead, zinc, iron and silicon concentrations in the liquid slag, solid oxide, and metal phases by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The a) massicot (PbO), b) spinel ((Zn, Fe)Fe 2 O 4), c) zincite ((Zn,Fe)O 1+x , 2 polymorphs), d) lead ferrite (Pb 2+x Fe 2 O 5+x), e) plumboferrite (Pb 4 Fe 22-x Zn x O 37), f) magnetoplumbite (Pb(Fe 2 O 3 ,PbFeO 2 ,PbZnO 2)Fe 10 O 16), and g) W-ferrite (PbZn 2-x Fe 16+x O 27) primary phase fields of the PbO–ZnO-"FeO 1.5 " system in equilibrium with air were studied between 780 and 1300 °C. The ZnO-"FeO 1.5 ", ZnO-"FeO 1.5 "-SiO 2 and PbO–ZnO-"FeO 1.5 "-SiO 2 systems in equilibrium with air were studied up to 1745 °C, significantly improving the availability of information on the composition range of the high- and low-Fe zincite ((Zn,Fe)O 1+x) phases, and on the liquid slag composition at the boundaries of their primary phase fields. Lastly, the solubilities of iron in larsenite (Pb(Zn,Fe)SiO 4) and melilite (Pb 2 (Zn,Fe)Si 2 O 7) in equilibrium with air or metal were studied between 700 and 800 °C. The newly obtained and existing experimental data were used to develop a self-consistent set of thermodynamic parameters describing all phases in the system using the FactSage computer package. Properties of NPs, such as structure, surface charge or coating, and size, determine their uptake by cells. This study investigates the size effect of iron oxide (Fe3O4) NPs on plant uptake, translocation, and physiology. For this purpose, Fe3O4 NPs having about 10 and 100 nm in average sizes (namely NP10 and NP100) were hydroponically subjected to barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in different doses (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) at germination (5 days) and seedling (3 weeks) stages. Results revealed that particle size does not significantly influence the seedlings' growth but improves germination. The iron content in root and leaf tissues gradually increased with increasing NP10 and NP100 concentrations, revealing their root-to-shoot translocation. This result was confirmed by vibrating sample magnetometry analysis, where the magnetic signals increased with increasing NP doses. The translocation of NPs enhanced chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, suggesting their contribution to plant pigmentation. On the other hand, catalase activity and H2O2 production were higher in NP10-treated roots compared to NP100-treated ones. Besides, confocal microscopy revealed that NP10 leads to cell membrane damages. These findings showed that Fe3O4 NPs were efficiently taken up by the roots and transported to the leaves regardless of the size factor. However, small-sized Fe3O4 NPs may be more reactive due to their size properties and may cause cell stress and membrane damage. This study comprehensively investigated the effect of iron-oxide nanoparticles (NPs) on weathering durability and thermal resistance of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). The hydrophobic nature of NPs improved the dimensional stability of WPCs. The small size of NPs deposits the voids in the matrix, which helps to increase the mechanical properties, even after weathering test. The decrease of modulus of rupture (MOR) reached up to 16% for control samples, while it was 2% for IO40-1. Despite the intensive weathering conditions, NPs cover the surface of materials like a UV shield, improving WPCs' UV resistance. Moreover, the increase in the wood and NPs content limited the UV degradation, which resulted in lower color changes. The attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis also proved that there were nearly no changes in the characteristic bands of polymer (2916 and 2846 cm−1) and wood (1512 cm−1). The microscopic investigation, however, revealed the deterioration on the surface of WPCs after weathering exposure. Even though UV degradation is inevitable, iron oxide NPs significantly preserved the WPCs surface. However, there were also crack formations, which were also inhibited. On the other hand, NPs decelerated the thermal degradation by acting as a heat barrier. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis revealed an increase in the degradation temperature.
