This article offers a theoretical framework for understanding journalistic expertise, based on a revision of Collins and Evans' model. While their model maintains that a small elite of experienced and diligent journalists can become “interactional experts” in the respective specializations of their news sources, the current paper suggests that experienced journalists develop different degrees of bipolar “interactional expertise,” specializing in interactions with their sources on one hand and audiences on the other. The audience pole not only limits their expertise and fits it to the constraints of the news environment but also drives and legitimizes their focus on information that is simple and quick to obtain and convey and is ostensibly interesting and important for their audiences.

After the last few decades in which the importance of ‘local’ knowledge has been emphasized, attention must now turn to better understanding how such knowledge is communicated to certified experts (scientists) and vice versa. This paper examines how expert knowledge is co-produced in agriculture by local and non-local experts for the benefit of both. The argument is informed by an empirical case study of sustainable farmers and agriculture professionals in Iowa. While much has been written about how the conventional and sustainable models of agriculture rest upon different epistemological orientations, little has yet been said about how those different experts (local and certified) interact with each other. Building upon the work of H. M. Collins and Robert Evans, and their tripartite model of expertise (of no, contributory, and interactional expertise), I investigate the different forms of expertise that exist within agriculture. We analyse a recent paper by Goddiksen (2014) where the author raises questions about the relationship between authorship, attribution and Collins & Evans' concept of contributory and interactional expertise. We then highlight recent empirical work in the sociology of climate change science that has made similar points in order to clarify how authorship, division of labour and contribution are handled in real scientific settings. Despite this, Goddiksen's critique of both contributory and interactional expertise is ultimately ineffective because it rests on a misguided attempt to de-socialise these concepts. We conclude by stressing the importance of collective tacit knowledge acquisition through immersion as a critical step in becoming a full-blown contributory or interactional expert.

In Part I of this two part paper we try to set out the ‘essence’ of the notion of interactional expertise by starting with its origins. In Part II we will look at the notion of contributory expertise. The exercise has been triggered by recent discussion of these concepts in this journal by Plaisance and Kennedy and by Goddiksen.

The first part of this chapter introduces the idea of interactional expertise, while the second part focuses on its implications for philosophical theories of the importance of the body in forming our conceptual world. The chapter argues that the way philosophers have dealt with the body turns attention away from the most important questions and that we cannot answer these questions without making the notion of socialization, and therefore interactional expertise, a central concept in our thinking. This makes language at least as important, and often more important than bodily practice in our understanding of the world. The notion of a disembodied socialized agent leads in the direction of interesting questions while the notion of an embodied but unsocialized human actor is unimaginable.

Motivation - Despite the intersection between naturalistic decision making (NDM) and the environments in which day traders operate, little research has applied NDM theory and methods to the study of day trading practices. Research approach - In-depth interviews using applied cognitive task analysis (ACTA) were conducted with eight UK-based day traders. Findings - Nine cognitively complex elements of expertise were identified, highlighting the inextricable link between day traders' cognition, the trading floor in which they operate and computer technology with which they interact. Research limitations/Implications - Despite limitations associated with the generalisability of findings, it is hoped the research will demonstrate the utility of applying qualitative methods such as ACTA to the field of behavioural finance. Originality/Value - This work is original in its application of a 'naturalistic' mode of enquiry and macrocognitive theory to what has been coined a microcognitive domain. Take away message - 'Interactional expertise' is a useful concept for understanding day traders' decision-making.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration increasingly characterizes today's science and engineering research. The problems and opportunities facing society do not come neatly sorted by discipline. Difficulties arise when researchers from disciplines as different as engineering and the humanities work together and find that they speak largely different languages. This book explores a new framework for fostering collaborations among existing disciplines and expertise communities. The framework unites two ideas to emerge from recent work in STS: trading zones, in which scientific subcultures, each with its own language, develop the equivalents of pidgin and creole; and interactional expertise, in which experts learn to use the language of another research community in ways that are indistinguishable from expert practitioners of that community. A trading zone can gradually become a new area of expertise, facilitated by interactional expertise and involving negotiations over boundary objects (objects represented in different ways by different participants). The volume describes applications of the framework to service science, business strategy, environmental management, education, and practical ethics. One detailed case study focuses on attempts to create trading zones that would help prevent marine bycatch; another investigates trading zones formed to market the female condom to women in Africa; another describes how humanists embedded in a nanotechnology laboratory gained interactional expertise, resulting in improved research results for both humanists and nanoscientists. Neste trabalho, procura-se contribuir para a descrição de algumas manifestações desse tipo de expertise interacional, construindo conhecimento de relevância tanto para entrevistadores quanto para aqueles envolvidos no processo de formação de profissionais. À luz dos estudos sobre análise retórica do discurso, foram analisadas três entrevistas de candidatos a um posto de trabalho numa empresa transnacional. A pesquisa mostra que os candidatos diferem quanto ao grau de expertise interacional, no que se refere à compreensão dos objetivos das contribuições da entrevistadora e do papel do entrevistado; à capacidade de fazer uma autoapresentação alinhada aos valores da empresa e às exigências do cargo; e de tornar convincente as reivindicações das competências e habilidades testadas pela entrevistadora. The success of a candidate in a job interview largely depends on the interviewee s background knowledge about the activity and on the competences and skills in managing the relationship with the interviewer and his self-presentation. In this research, we seek to contribute to the description of some manifestations of this type of interactional expertise, building knowledge of practical relevance for both the interviewer and for those involved in the training of professionals. Based on studies about rhetorical discourse analysis, three interviews of candidates to a job opportunity in a transnational corporation were analyzed. The research shows that candidates differ in their level of interactional expertise, concerning the understanding of the goals of the interviewer s contributions and of the interviewee s role; the ability to make a self-presentation according to the company values and job requirements; and convincingly make claims of competences and skills tested by the interviewer.
