A sense of school belonging has been associated with a number of positive outcomes for young people Two core aspects are feeling part of the school, and feeling safe. This paper examines qualitative data from a mixed methods questionnaire designed to inform schools on the barriers and supports to participation in school life and the relationship with students’ feelings of belonging. It contributes to the limited existing qualitative data and can be set alongside students’ quantitative measures to provide new insights. We explore responses from 595 students, to the open questions of a survey. Students frequently mentioned relationships with teachers and peers, often in the context of feeling safe to be themselves, suggesting that feeling part of the school and feeling safe are intertwined. The comments reveal the importance of being recognised and accepted and not having their identity purely defined in relation to attainment on a narrowly defined curriculum.

Background\ud \ud Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that is not well understood. The HS core outcome set calls for a patient global assessment (PtGA), for which measures are limited.\ud Objectives\ud \ud Our aim is to assess the validity, reliability, and responsiveness of a candidate single‐item PtGA for HS‐specific health‐related quality of life (HRQOL).\ud Methods\ud \ud Cognitive debriefing interviews were conducted with HS patients in Denmark (DK) and the United States (US). Field testing was conducted via a cross‐sectional observational study with adults with HS in the US and DK. The candidate PtGA item, demographic items, and multiple patient‐reported scales including the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Quality of Life (HiSQOL), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), numerical rating scale (NRS) for pain were concurrently administered to evaluate convergent and known‐groups validity. The scales with a single‐item assessment of change were administered again 24‐72 hours later to evaluate reliability and responsiveness.\ud Results\ud \ud After cognitive debriefing, the candidate PtGA for HS‐specific HRQOL was finalized with five response levels. Convergent validity of the PtGA was supported with significant correlations with the HiSQOL score r = 0.79 [95CI: 0.75‐0.82] and DLQI (r = 0.78, [95CI: 0.74‐0.82]). Cigarette smoking is the leading avoidable cause of mortality in the UK. Individuals who start smoking in early adult life lose 10 years of life expectancy.1 Smoking is a risk factor for psoriasis [odds ratio (OR) of 1.94, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.64–2.28], hidradenitis suppurativa (HS, OR 1.90, 95% CI 1.84‐1.96), healing delay (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.53‐2.81), surgical site infection (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.57‐2.04), wound complications (OR 2.27, 95% CI 1.82‐2.84), and melanoma (relative risk 1.7, 95% CI 1.2‐2.6).2–5 UK NHS stop‐smoking services (SSS) provide behavioural support delivered by trained practitioners and pharmacotherapy.

Global challenges associated with a growing demand for food in the face of finite natural resources and climate change have prompted concerns about the sustainability of our current food systems. As formulated by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the four principal domains of sustainable diets are health, economics, society, and the environment. While emphasizing the environmental cost and health impacts of current diets, the research literature has virtually ignored the vital economic and social aspects of sustainability. Without these components, critical inputs for decision-making about global challenges related to climate change and a growing demand for food are missing. National Dairy Council convened experts in sociology, economics, human nutrition, food systems science, food security, environmental health, and sustainable agriculture for a one-day workshop to define the social and economic domains of sustainability in service of better characterizing food-based dietary guidance that is both healthy and sustainable. The consensus recommendations were to (1) select social and economic indicators to complement the existing environmental and health ones, (2) better define appropriate concepts, terms, and measures to foster discussion across scientific disciplines, (3) reframe the focus on sustainable diets towards the goal of “achieving healthy dietary patterns from sustainable food systems”, and (4) complement the four domains, and incorporate the notions of geography, time, and cross-cutting considerations into sustainability frameworks. This publication summarizes the presentations, discussions, and findings from the 2019 workshop, and aims to catalyze further action to advance sustainability research and practice in the context of food-based dietary guidance and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Undergraduates studying highly mathematical subjects at university level often have a long history of success in mathematics, particularly in school-level mathematics. We report on the interim findings of a study of undergraduates who all achieved the highest possible grades in their school examinations but whose performance in university mathematics examinations reveal attainment gaps that are not predictable by prior attainment. Focusing particularly on attitudinal factors such as mindset and beliefs about ways of working with mathematics we examine students’ perceptions of what enables or prevents them from being successful with their mathematics at university level using a mixture of questionnaires and interviews.
