The Covid-19 pandemic has been a serious challenge to the entire global community. Globally, countries were forced to introduce restrictive measures to contain the infection, inevitably causing popular discontent. Germany introduced some of the most painful restrictions. In times of crisis, timely and reliable information is a prerequisite for public motivation to comply with restrictive measures. Thus, it seems essential to retrace how the German leadership tried to contain citizens' dissatisfaction with the restrictions, using information campaigns and strategies. This theoretical work aims to systematise available data on how Covid-awareness was raised in Germany, compare them with data from the Russian Federation, and identify the most successful communication strategies and weaknesses. It is clear from the findings that the channels of communication between the government and society should be diversified using all available means, and experts and opinion leaders, who are more trusted than politicians, should be recruited. In addition, there is a need to combat misinformation and dispel unproven facts. The data obtained can be of value in conducting information campaigns during future global crises.

Hintergrund: Sexuell übertragbare Infektionen (STI) sind ein relevanter Risikofaktor für die sexuelle Gesundheit des Einzelnen und der Bevölkerung. Für eine zielgruppenspezifische Präventionsarbeit ist der Wissensstand zu STI in verschiedenen Bevölkerungsgruppen daher von besonderem Interesse. Ziel: Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, den Wissensstand zu neun STI in der deutschen Bevölkerung zu analysieren. Dafür werden Zusammenhänge mit soziodemografischen Variablen, sexualitätsbezogenen Merkmalen sowie der subjektiven Zufriedenheit mit dem Informationsstand untersucht. Methode: Die GeSiD-Studie "Gesundheit und Sexualität in Deutschland" erhob von 4955 Personen per Face-to-Face-Interview repräsentative quantitative Daten zum Wissensstand zu STI. Als Auswahlverfahren wurde eine zweifache Zufallsstichprobe gezogen. Dafür wurden zunächst 200 Sample Points (Gemeinden) in ganz Deutschland regional proportional ausgewählt. Anschließend wurde eine Zufallsstichprobe von Adressen über die jeweiligen Einwohnermeldeämter gezogen. Die Teilnahmequote betrug 30,2 %; das Durchschnittsalter lag bei 46,3 Jahren. Ergebnisse: Wissen über HIV/Aids war in allen Altersgruppen weit verbreitet. Andere STI waren deutlich weniger bekannt. Besonders wenig informiert zeigten sich Ältere und Befragte mit niedrigem Bildungsstand, regionaler sozialer Benachteiligung sowie mit Migrationshintergrund. Eine höhere Anzahl von SexualpartnerInnen hing mit einem besseren Wissensstand zusammen. Gut informiert zeigten sich Personen, die sich nicht als heterosexuell beschreiben, sowie Personen, die schon einmal an einer STI erkrankt waren. Zielgruppenspezifische Anstrengungen zur Verbesserung des Wissens über STI sind nötig, um sexuelles Risikoverhalten zu vermindern und die Inanspruchnahme von Präventionsangeboten zu verbessern., Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a relevant risk factor for the sexual health of individuals and the population. Therefore, the level of awareness and knowledge about STIs in different population groups is of particular interest for specific prevention work. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the awareness of and knowledge about nine STIs in the German population. To do so, the study examined correlations with sociodemographic variables, sexuality-related characteristics, and subjective satisfaction with the level of information. Methods: The GeSiD study "German Health and Sexuality Survey" collected representative quantitative data from 4955 persons via face-to-face interviews on the state of knowledge about STIs. As a selection procedure, a two-step random sample was collected. Firstly, 200 sample points (municipalities) were initially selected proportionally across Germany. Secondly, a random sample of addresses was drawn from the respective residents’ registration offices. The participation rate was 30.2%; the average age was 46.3 years. Results: Knowledge about HIV/AIDS was widespread in all age groups, but other STIs were significantly less known. Older people and respondents with a low level of education were particularly poorly informed. Local social disadvantage and a family history of migration were also negatively correlated with knowledge about STIs. A higher number of sexual partners is related to a better level of knowledge. In addition, persons who do not describe their sexual orientation as heterosexual as well as those with a history of STIs were well informed. Conclusion: Heterosexual adults in Germany are insufficiently informed about the risks of STIs. Therefore, target-group-specific efforts are needed to improve knowledge about STIs in order to reduce sexual risk behavior and improve the utilization of prevention programs among socially disadvantaged groups.

This article describes the context, development, objectives, and content of three instruments. They stem from two questionnaires, used in the ERiK-Surveys 2020 and the Corona-KiTa-Study (CKS), two multi-perspective surveys which were developed by the German Youth Institute, to measure quality as well as challenges and solutions of the Corona pandemic in early childhood education and care (ECEC). The three instruments focus on (1) childcare center directors' subjective level of information about pandemic-related regulations in the ERiK questionnaire and the extent of implementation of (2) hygiene and (3) protective measures in ECEC in the CKS questionnaire. First analyses suggest good performance and quality of the instruments. Further analyses (e.g., regarding validity and reliability) will be carried out. The instruments seem to be promising for future research, for example regarding medical questions in the field of ECEC.

In Krisenzeiten, in denen es zu einer Knappheit an lebensrettenden Ressourcen kommen kann, stellt sich die Frage, wie diese Ressourcen in einer den Grund- und Menschenrechten verpflichteten Gesellschaft zu verteilen sind. Bisher gibt es keine gesetzliche Regelung zu den Kriterien der Verteilungsentscheidungen in einer solchen Situation. In der Pandemie wurde auf die fachlichen Empfehlungen der Deutschen Interdisziplinären Vereinigung für Intensiv- und Notfallmedizin (DIVI) Bezug genommen.

We explore mask-wearing behavior during the coronavirus pandemic using the Self-Appraisal of Masking Instrument (SAMI). We situate this survey-based instrument within a theory in which the decision to mask reflects social identity, an associated identity standard, and appraisals that generate feelings about oneself. Analyses of SAMI's empirical properties reveal that masking-specific emotional reactions are distinct from emotional reports related to current events and politics (discriminant validity). We also uncover evidence of predictive validity: expressed feelings about masking predict future voting more than 6 months later. We recommend SAMI to researchers interested in studying mask resistance in an increasingly polarized political climate, and the intuition behind SAMI could prove useful in other research contexts in which health decisions reflect a conscious comparison to standards held by those who share an identity or will otherwise pass judgment.

As shown by the statistics, East Asian countries control COVID-19 better than other countries. Due to that fact, one should pose the following question: what is it caused by? The article analyzes the actions taken to control COVID-19 in Poland and Malaysia - statistics, the time of introducing restrictions, their types and scope, as well as methods of their enforcement. The choice of countries is dictated by a similar number of inhabitants and the number of tests performed. Malaysia is recognized worldwide as one of the top countries managing the pandemic very well. On the other hand, Poland is one of the world's leading countries with the highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19. The descriptive and comparative analysis allowed the author to draw conclusions on the factors that determine success in controlling COVID-19. On the basis of the conducted research, previous experiences and developed action plans for contagious diseases as well as cultural and social factors are of the greatest importance.

Während der Covid-19-Pandemie erließen die Bundesländer Rechtsverordnungen, um Infektionsschutzmaßnahmen durchzusetzen. Die Restriktivität der Verordnungen variiert sowohl zwischen den Ländern als auch über die Zeit. In diesem Beitrag präsentieren wir einen neuen Datensatz zur Messung der Restriktivität der Landesverordnungen und gehen der Frage nach, welche Faktoren die Variation der Infektionsschutzmaßnahmen erklären. Eine Serie bivariater Analysen zeigt, dass 'die üblichen Verdächtigen' - Problemdruck und Parteiendifferenz - unterschiedlich wirken. Über alle Länder hinweg folgt die Restriktivität der Verordnungen dem Infektionsgeschehen über Zeit. Niveauunterschiede zwischen den Ländern lassen sich hierdurch jedoch nur bedingt erklären. Eine Annäherung an die ideologischen Positionen der Landesregierungen gegenüber Infektionsschutzmaßnahmen ergibt einen erkennbaren, aber nur mäßig starken Zusammenhang mit der abhängigen Variablen. Insgesamt ist die Variation somit in hohem Maße erklärbar und nicht willkürlich., During the Covid-19 pandemic the German Länder enacted executive orders to implement infection protection measures. The restrictiveness of these regulations varies between Länder and over time. The paper presents a new dataset to measure the restrictiveness of those executive orders and investigates which factors determine the variation of infection protection measures. A series of bivariate analyses reveals that 'the usual suspects'-problem pressure and partisan differences - have differing effects. In all Länder, the restrictiveness of executive orders is closely linked to the development of infection rates over time. However, infection rates are less suited to explain variation in levels of restrictiveness between Länder. Still, the ideological orientation of Länder governments with regard to intensity of infection protection measures exposes a noticeable, yet moderate correlation with the dependent variable. Thus, variation is not arbitrary, but can be explained by systematic factors.

The health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic highlights, more than ever, the necessity of scientific research to inform policy action. During such a crisis it is vital that any measures taken by policy makers mitigate the consequences of risks without causing long-lasting social and economic harm. Spatial aspects play an important role here: knowledge about the spread of a disease through space and social networks, the effectiveness of different policy responses, and the economic and social implications for the population are of particular relevance. As any policy action is embedded in its institutional and social environment, not every measure is effective in all contexts. Moreover, infectious diseases can spread at different speed in different places, requiring tailored interventions. Careful evaluation and comparison of different settings, including the organization of the healthcare systems and the geographic and demographic characteristics of a region or country, is therefore essential. The COVID-19 pandemic has made manifest the importance of the spatial and geographical dimension of health, however, the relevance of this interlinkage is not limited to the spread of contagious diseases. Differences in accessibility of services between urban and rural regions, the varying costs of access to healthcare for different (socioeconomic) groups of the population, the impact of these on healthcare utilization, and environmental shocks on population health are just a few examples illustrating the close link between space, socioeconomic factors and health. This special issue of REGION is presented in two parts. In the first part, papers explore the spread and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and economy. In the second part, papers investigate regional and spatial aspects of the healthcare sector with a focus on health disparities.

With the arrival of effective COVID-19 vaccines, the fight against the ongoing global pandemic entered a new stage. The question shifted towards how to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible. Understanding the reasons people choose to get vaccinated or not is integral in informing immunization campaigns. But who are the unvaccinated? This is determined by using cross-national data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). We investigate the interrelation of the (un)willingness to be vaccinated with social and health aspects as well as the economic situation of our sample of adults in Europe, aged 50 and above. We find that respondents' economic situation as well as diagnosed physical illnesses and education show the strongest relation to vaccination hesitancy. Our results provide a comprehensive picture of influential factors of older adults' vaccination behaviour that can advance the success of the immunisation campaigns in Europe. Die hohen COVID-19-Inzidenzen unter Beschäftigten in fleischverarbeitenden Betrieben im Süden Brasiliens markieren einen neuen Punkt auf der langen Liste von Problemen der globalen fleischverarbeitenden Industrie. Bereits bekannte Probleme sind Arbeitsunfälle, das Repetitive-Strain-Injury-Syndrom, Arbeit mit kontaminierten Abfällen sowie immunologische und psychiatrische Störungen. Zudem ist die Industrie geprägt von prekärer Arbeit, Rassismus und Speziesismus sowie der Hervorbringung ungesunder Ökologien. Diese nähren entstehende Krankheitserreger und bilden gemeinsam eine Szenerie chronischer Zerstörung, welche Menschen, Tiere und Umwelten ausbeutet und krank macht. Known problems include occupational accidents, repetitive strain injury syndrome, working with contaminated waste, and immunological and psychiatric disorders. In addition, the industry is characterised by precarious work, racism, speciesism, and the production of unhealthy ecologies that contribute to emerging pathogens and constitute a scenario of chronic destruction and exploitation that makes people, animals, and environments sick. In this article, we examine how the current situation, caused by the sinister activities of agribusiness, synthesizes central themes in the debate on the Anthropocene and refl ects on new confi gurations in the devastating historical, social, sanitary, and ecological conditions that have aff ected Brazil since colonial times.

Die emotional geführte Diskussion über die Einführung des Paragrafen 28a in das IfSG hat verdeutlicht, wie groß das Bedürfnis nach einer parlamentarischen Debatte über die Corona-Schutzmaßnahmen fraktionsübergreifend ist. Insbesondere die Oppositionsfraktionen sehen sich von der Regierung übergangen. Ihr Hauptargument lautet, dass die Bundesregierung gemeinsam mit den Landesregierungen konkrete Schutzmaßnahmen erlasse und damit in Grundrechte eingreife, ohne die Parlamente ausreichend zu beteiligen. Dieses "Durchregieren von oben" schmälere die Legitimation der erlassenen Maßnahmen und schade langfristig der Demokratie. Das Entscheidungsrecht über alle wesentlichen Belange müsse allein bei den Parlamenten verbleiben.

Has the world responded to the coronavirus pandemic in an intergenerationally just manner? Three aspects are relevant to intergenerational justice: the number of dead and ill (medical dimension), the economic downturn (economic dimension), and the additional national debt (financial dimension). The goal must be to protect future societies from the cumulative damage that pandemics may cause. Against this background, a new vaccination strategy for humanity - and this includes the individual national states - turns out to be the most important element. Such a strategy would help to ease the diseases we can ease and eradicate the diseases we can eradicate. Herd immunity should not only be the goal for the rich countries but for humanity as a whole. This is not only necessary for social and/or developmental reasons, but also serves the self-protection of the richer countries in an inter-connected world. We need more government funding for prophylactic vaccine research. This would lead to the typical development time of a vaccine - 10-12 years on average - being shortened. The rapid development of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 shows that a reduction to 1-2 years is possible if the necessary resources are made available. The testing of vaccine candidates for each infectious disease, however, comes with the cost of at least in the high three-digit million euro range. Profit-oriented companies cannot reasonably be expected to produce vaccines in advance that may never be needed at their own expense. In the future, vaccines must therefore be treated as "global public goods", whose development and production are primarily the responsibility of states. The record amounts pledged by governments at the donor conferences for vaccines in 2020/2021 show the beginning of a paradigm shift. Für diejenigen, die in der COVID-19-Pandemie in Deutschland Risikokommunikation zur Aufgabe haben oder sich diese zur Aufgabe machen, stellt sich die Frage, welche Anforderungen sich aus den besonderen Bedingungen an eine Risikokommunikation ergeben, die handlungsleitend wirken möchte, und wie sie diesen Anforderungen begegnen können. Das vorliegende Dokument bietet Inspiration und Orientierung bei der Beantwortung dieser Frage. Die Praxishilfe richtet sich an Akteur:innen, die sich in der COVID-19-Pandemie mit Risikokommunikation an die breite Bevölkerung oder Teile der Bevölkerung richten. Zu diesen Akteur:innen gehören Organisationen des Öffentlichen Gesundheitsdienstes auf allen Ebenen, aber auch Angehörige gesellschaftlicher Gruppen, die näher an der Lebenswelt der Menschen sind, wie zum Beispiel Arbeitgeber:innen, Kirchen oder zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen wie etwa Jugendorganisationen. Die Praxishilfe gibt eine Reihe von Empfehlungen für Risikokommunikation, die infektionsschützendes beziehungsweise lebenserhaltendes Verhalten fördern möchte. The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has spread rapidly across Germany. Infections are likely to be under-recorded in the notification data from local health authorities on laboratory-confirmed cases since SARS-CoV-2 infections can proceed with few symptoms and then often remain undetected. Seroepidemiological studies allow the estimation of the proportion in the population that has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 (seroprevalence) as well as the extent of undetected infections. The ‘CORONA-MONITORING bundesweit’ study (RKI-SOEP study) collects biospecimens and interview data in a nationwide population sample drawn from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Participants are sent materials to self-collect a dry blood sample of capillary blood from their finger and a swab sample from their mouth and nose, as well as a questionnaire. The samples returned are tested for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies and SARS-CoV-2 RNA to identify past or present infections. The methods applied enable the identification of SARS-CoV-2 infections, including those that previously went undetected. In addition, by linking the data collected with available SOEP data, the study has the potential to investigate social and health-related differences in infection status. Thus, the study contributes to an improved understanding of the extent of the epidemic in Germany, as well as identification of target groups for infection protection.

Das Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 hat sich in kurzer Zeit bundesweit ausgebreitet. In den Meldedaten der Gesundheitsämter zu laborbestätigten Infektionsfällen ist von einer Untererfassung des Infektionsgeschehens auszugehen, da Infektionen häufig unentdeckt bleiben, zum Beispiel weil sie symptomarm verlaufen. In seroepidemiologischen Studien kann der Bevölkerungsanteil mit durchgemachter SARS-CoV-2-Infektion (Seroprävalenz) wie auch der Umfang unentdeckter Infektionen abgeschätzt werden. In der Studie CORONA-MONITORING bundesweit (RKI-SOEP-Studie) werden Bioproben und Befragungsdaten in einer deutschlandweiten Bevölkerungsstichprobe des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) erhoben. Den Teilnehmenden werden Materialien zur selbstständigen Gewinnung einer Trockenblutprobe aus Kapillarblut des Fingers und einer Abstrichprobe aus Mund und Nase sowie ein Fragebogen postalisch zugesendet. Die zurückgesendeten Proben werden auf SARS-CoV-2-IgG-Antikörper und SARS-CoV-2-RNA zur Identifikation einer durchgemachten oder aktuellen Infektion untersucht. Die eingesetzten Methoden ermöglichen es, auch solche SARS-CoV-2-Infektionen zu erkennen, die bislang unentdeckt blieben. Durch die Verknüpfung mit bereits vorhandenen SOEP-Daten hat die Studie das Potenzial, auch soziale und gesundheitsbezogene Unterschiede im Infektionsstatus zu untersuchen. So kann die Studie zu einem verbesserten Verständnis des Ausmaßes der Epidemie in Deutschland wie auch zur Identifikation von Zielgruppen für den Infektionsschutz beitragen.

This article studies a conflict over two competing norms in which the actors demonstrated incompatible positions not through arguments, but through actions. During the SARS crisis, China and the World Health Organization (WHO) entered a norm conflict over the precedence of sovereignty or global health security. Both resorted to behavioural, not discursive contestation: while the WHO practically but not rhetorically challenged the sovereignty norm by acting according to the norm of global health security, China - without openly acknowledging it - contravened the basic principles of global health security by acting according to the overlapping sovereignty norm. Why and with what consequences do actors choose to contest norms through actions rather than words? The article accounts for the resort to behavioural contestation by pointing to the strategic advantages it offers for furthering a contentious norm understanding without facing the social costs of making it explicit. It furthermore highlights that behavioural contestation may feed back into and change the odds of discursive contestation as its practical effects provide rhetorical resources to (de-)legitimate one or the other position. The propositions are illustrated in the interactions of China and the WHO during the SARS crisis and the subsequent norm development.

Since discovering SARS-CoV-2 (previously known as nCoV-19), an emerging infectious disease caused by a new virus under the family Coronaviridae, the number of reported occupational-related violence among frontline healthcare workers has been increasing. This study used a qualitative design that employed a random selection of fifteen (15) respondents from the five (5) DOH Hospitals in Central Luzon (Region 3). The data were analyzed to determine the codes/labels and the themes of the study. Analyses of the interviews identified four (4) significant themes, namely: (1)Awareness of Maltreatment, (2) Optimistic Perspective, (3) Spiritual Positivism, and (4) Proactive Health & Information Drive. Thesefindings suggested that government officials, hospital administrators, and community leaders should provide a concrete policy guideline on the safety of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and impose necessary sanctions on those who pose a risk to their safety under the governing laws.In addition, the findings of the study also providethe need to address pressing issues on lack of support from different institutions especially in cases of communicable diseases such as COVID-19. It also suggests additional investment in health, science & technology, advancement in laboratory assays and medicine, and additional human resources accommodate increasing cases of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Der Kampf gegen Kindersterblichkeit wurde für die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) in den 1970er-Jahren noch wichtiger als zuvor. Armut, Bevölkerungswachstum, Dekolonisierung und Menschenrechte waren prägende Themen auf der Agenda Internationaler Organisationen. In der WHO kam der "Teufelskreis" aus Mangelernährung und Krankheiten in den Blick. 1978 machte die WHO die Bekämpfung von Durchfall­-Erkrankungen - eine der häufigsten Todesursachen bei Kindern - zum Gegenstand eines globalen Programms. Bei der Ausgestaltung verschränkten sich medizinische Wissensproduktion, sozialwissenschaftliche Annahmen und politische Deutungskämpfe über adäquate Maßnahmen und Prioritäten. Neben Angehörigen medizinischer Berufe rückten Mütter als Akteurinnen in den Mittelpunkt. Betont wurde ihre Verantwortung für die Prävention von Kindersterblichkeit und Mangel­ernährung. Insbesondere das Stillen wurde aufgewertet, weil es gegenüber anderen Formen der Säuglingsernährung belegbare Vorteile für die gesundheitliche Entwicklung hatte. Während dies den Blick auf die Handlungsmacht von Frauen schärfte, konnte es zugleich eine Festschreibung auf die (exklusive) Rolle von Müttern in der Kinderpflege bedeuten. Jahrhunderts erlauben somit eine Analyse von Geschlechterverhältnissen in Entwicklungspolitik, Medizin und sozialer Praxis., The fight against child mortality became even more important for the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the 1970s than before. Poverty, population growth, decolonisation and human rights were defining issues on the agenda of international organisations. At the WHO, the focus turned to the 'vicious circle' of malnutrition and disease. In 1978, the WHO made the fight against diarrhoeal diseases - one of the most frequent causes of death among children - the subject of a global programme. Medical knowledge production, social science assumptions and political battles over appropriate measures and priorities were intertwined in the design of the programme. In addition to members of the medical profession, mothers were now acknowledged as central actors with a responsibility for the prevention of child mortality and malnutrition. Breastfeeding in particular was valorised due to its proven advantages for child health development compared to other forms of infant nutrition. While this sharpened the focus on women’s agency, it could also imply a fixation on the (exclusive) role of mothers in child care. Programmes to combat malnutrition and child mortality in the last third of the 20th century thus allow an analysis of gender relations in development policy, medicine and social practice.

In diesem Beitrag untersuchen wir, welchen spezifischen Einfluss Faktoren der politischen Raumkultur auf die regionalen Unterschiede in den Corona Inzidenzverläufen in den beiden Expansionsphasen der Pandemie im Frühjahr 2020 sowie im Herbst/Winter 2020 hatten. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass in Regionen mit hohem Zuspruch zu Parteien der radikalen Rechten eine höhere Skepsis bzw. Distanz zu demokratischen Institutionen und damit einhergehend eine geringere Akzeptanz der Schutzmaßnahmen vorherrscht, prüfen wir, inwiefern sich diese Unterschiede in der politischen Raumkultur auf die Inzidenzentwicklungen auswirken. Wir nutzen neben Daten zum Infektionsgeschehen die Wahlergebnisse und Nichtwählendenanteile vergangener Bundestagswahlen und zahlreiche soziostrukturelle Variablen für die 401 Kreise und kreisfreien Städte. Zur Modellierung der dynamischen An- und Abstiegsphasen greifen wir auf latente Wachstumsmodelle zurück. Die Ergebnisse zeigen hohe signifikante Effekte der AfD-Zweitstimmenanteile auf die Anstiege der Infektionszahlen in beiden Wellen – sowohl in Ost- als auch in Westdeutschland. Für andere im Bundestag vertretene Parteien lassen sich keine systematischen Effekte auf die Anstiegsphase beider Wellen finden. Dazu kann gezeigt werden, dass auch die Zweitstimmenanteile rechtsextremer Kleinparteien und die Nichtwählendenanteile zu den Bundestagswahlen 2005 und 2013 positive Effekte auf die Inzidenzentwicklungen haben; das weist auf eine hohe Persistenz politischer und demokratischer Distanz in Teilen dieser Regionen hin. - Eine gekürzte Version dieses Beitrags ist erschienen in: ZRex - Zeitschrift für Rechtsextremismusforschung, Jg. 1, Heft 2/2021, S. 191-211, online verfügbar unter https://doi.org/10.3224/zrex.v1i2.01., In this article we examine the impact of spatial political culture on regional differences in the Corona-incidences in both pandemic expansion phases in spring 2020 as well as autumn/winter 2020. Based on the assumption that regions with high support for parties of the radical right are also dominated by higher levels of scepticism towards democratic institutions, accompanied by lower acceptance of protective measures, we analyse this impact on the progression of the incidence rates. We use election results and the quota of non-voters of past federal elections as well as numerous socio-structural variables for 401 districts and independent cities in Germany. To model the dynamic of increasing and decreasing phases we use latent growth models. The results indicate high significant positive effects of the election result for the far right AfD on the increase in infection rates in both phases - and in East Germany as well as in West Germany. There are no systematic effects on the increase in infections rates in both phases for other parties that are part of the German parliament. Furthermore, it can be shown that quotas for small parties of the radical right as well as quotas of non-voters in the federal elections of 2005 and 2013 have positive effects on the progression of incidence, indicating a high persistence of political and democratic distance in parts of these regions.

Vorgestellt werden die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung zu raumzeitlichen Mustern und Determinanten der COVID-19-Ausbreitung auf drei räumlichen Skalen im Zeitraum von März 2020 bis März 2021: (1) 401 Landkreise und kreisfreie Städte, (2) 46 Stadtbezirke von Berlin, Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg und Essen sowie (3) 46 Raumeinheiten der kleinteiligsten Ebene, der Ortsteilebene der Stadt Duisburg. Identifiziert wurden mithilfe der geographischen, kartographischen und statistischen Analysen (Korrelation, explorative Datenanalyse) Muster sowie Determinanten der COVID-19-Ausbreitung. Die Datenbasis der untersuchten Raumeinheiten bilden die monatlichen Infektions- und Inzidenz-Zahlen vom März 2020 bis März 2021 sowie 30 sozioökonomische Indikatoren. Herausgearbeitet wurde u. a. die raumzeitliche Dynamik bzw. Verschiebung von Corona-Hotspots, deutschlandweite, zeitabhängige Nord-Süd- und Ost-West-Gefälle, räumliche Muster innerhalb der Bundesländer sowie zahlreiche aufschlussreiche Korrelationen und statistische Beziehungen.
