Abstract Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors that are effective against ovarian and breast cancers with breast cancer susceptibility gene (BRCA) mutations have undesirable side effects, such as hematological toxicity. AZD5305, a selective PARP1 inhibitor currently in Phase 1/2 clinical trials, may avoid the side effects caused by PARP2. However, the in vivo pharmacokinetic characteristics of AZD5305 and its bioanalytical methods are unknown. Therefore, a method based on liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectroscopy (LC–MS/MS) was developed and validated to quantify AZD5305 in plasma of mice. Optimal chromatographic separation in terms of peak intensity and symmetry was acquired using a 4-µm Polar-RP 80 Å (2.0 × 150 mm) column with ammonium acetate (5 mM) in distilled water–acetonitrile (50:50, v/v). The retention times of AZD5305 and internal standard (IS; olaparib) were 1.82 min and 1.99 min, respectively. Detection was carried out via triple quadrupole mass spectrometry in positive ion mode employing multiple reaction monitoring transitions at m/z 407.0 → 376.0 for AZD5305 and m/z 435.0 → 281.2 for the IS. The LC–MS/MS method was linear in the range 1–1000 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient ≥ 0.990 and showed acceptable values of major parameters including accuracy, precision, and recovery. Additionally, AZD5305 showed high stability under various conditions. The in vivo and in vitro pharmacokinetics of AZD5305 were successfully characterized by employing the validated LC–MS/MS method. A high level of drug exposure and linear pharmacokinetics were observed after intravenous (IV) bolus and oral administration (PO) of AZD5305 at 0.1–1 mg/kg and 0.1–3 mg/kg, respectively. The bioavailability was close to 100%, and the metabolic stability of AZD5305 in hepatic microsomes of mice and humans was very high. These results may contribute to the improvement of PARP inhibitors that are used to treat malignancies originating from BRCA mutations.

In this study, we propose a method for predicting welding deformation caused by multi-pass welding using the thermal elastic–plastic finite element method (TEP-FEM) by considering the interpass temperature. This method increases the interpass temperature, which has not been considered in the existing TEP-FEM, from 200 °C to 1000 °C, and simultaneously performs thermal and mechanical analyses. In addition, this method can also evaluate temperature history and the time it takes to weld. By predicting the welding deformation using this method, angular distortion prediction was reduced from 16.75 mm to 10.9 mm compared to the case where the interpass temperature was cooled to room temperature. Additionally, the deformation error was significantly reduced from 6.14% to 2.92% compared to that of the strain as directed boundary method used in a previous study. Additionally, our research demonstrated that interpass temperatures above 800 °C can result in increased deformation errors. In conclusion, it is essential to select an appropriate temperature to minimize deformation error.

Head and neck cancer ranks as the sixth-most common malignancy worldwide, characterized by high mortality and recurrence rates. Research studies indicate that molecular diagnostics play a crucial role in the early detection and prognostic evaluation of these diseases. This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers for head and neck cancer and elucidate their interactions with miRNAs and possible therapeutic drugs. Four drivers, namely, FN1, IL1A, COL1A1, and MMP9, were identified using network biology and machine learning approaches. Gene set variation analysis (GSVA) showed that these genes were significantly involved in different biological processes and pathways, including coagulation, UV-response-down, apoptosis, NOTCH signaling, Wnt-beta catenin, and other signal pathways. The diagnostic value of these hub genes was validated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The top interactive miRNAs, including miR-128-3p, miR-218-5p, miR-214-3p, miR-124-3p, miR-129-2-3p, and miR-1-3p, targeted the key genes. Furthermore, the interaction between the key genes and drugs was also identified. In summary, the key genes and miRNAs or drugs reported in this study might provide valuable information for potential biomarkers to increase the prognosis and diagnosis of head and neck cancer.

“Organoids”, three-dimensional self-organized organ-like miniature tissues, are proposed as intermediary models that bridge the gap between animal and human studies in drug development. Despite recent advancements in organoid model development, studies on toxicity using these models are limited. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to analyze the functionality and gene expression of pre- and post-differentiated human hepatic organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells and utilize them for toxicity assessment. First, we confirmed the functional similarity of this hepatic organoid model to the human liver through various functional assessments, such as glycogen storage, albumin and bile acid secretion, and cytochrome P450 (CYP) activity. Subsequently, utilizing these functionally validated hepatic organoids, we conducted toxicity evaluations with three hepatotoxic substances (ketoconazole, troglitazone, and tolcapone), which are well known for causing drug-induced liver injury, and three non-hepatotoxic substances (sucrose, ascorbic acid, and biotin). The organoids effectively distinguished between the toxicity levels of substances with and without hepatic toxicity. We demonstrated the potential of hepatic organoids with validated functionalities and genetic characteristics as promising models for toxicity evaluation by analyzing toxicological changes occurring in hepatoxic drug-treated organoids.

Purpose Cancer patients receiving various anti-cancer treatments commonly experience malnutrition, and many studies have reported that nutritional status is associated with survival and prognosis. Although standard neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is commonly used in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer owing to its tumor-downsizing and downstaging effects, there is a lack of research on the impact of patients’ nutritional status on the efficacy of neoadjuvant CRT. Methods We investigated the immunonutritional markers before and after long-course neoadjuvant CRT in 131 patients diagnosed with locally advanced rectal cancer from March 2013 to March 2022. Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a recent pandemic that caused serious global emergency. To identify new and effective therapeutics, we employed a drug repurposing approach. The poly (ADP ribose) polymerase inhibitors were used for this purpose and were repurposed against the main protease (Mpro) target of severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The results from these studies were used to design compounds using the ‘Grow Scaffold’ modules available on Discovery Studio v2018. The three designed compounds, olaparib 1826 and olaparib 1885, and rucaparib 184 demonstrated better CDOCKER docking scores for Mpro than their parent compounds. Moreover, the compounds adhered to Lipinski’s rule of five and demonstrated a synthetic accessibility score of 3.55, 3.63, and 4.30 for olaparib 1826, olaparib 1885, and rucaparib 184, respectively. The short-range Coulombic and Lennard-Jones potentials also support the potential binding of the modified compounds to Mpro. Therefore, we propose these three compounds as novel SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors.

Abstract Introduction This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of silicon ring tourniquets and conventional pneumatic tourniquets in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study compared the operation time, total bleeding amount, length from the tourniquet distal end to the patella superior pole (L_TP), and complications related to the two tourniquet application methods and attempted to determine whether the silicon ring tourniquet has advantages over conventional pneumatic tourniquets. Materials and methods This prospective comparative study included 30 patients who underwent bilateral simultaneous TKA for degenerative osteoarthritis in August to December 2021. All patients underwent TKA on one side with a conventional pneumatic tourniquet, while TKA on the other side with a silicon ring tourniquet. The primary outcomes were the L_TP, operation time, tourniquet time, total bleeding amount, total drainage amount, and postoperative visual analog scale (VAS) score of the tourniquet applied site at 6, 24, and 48 h postoperatively. The secondary outcome was tourniquet-related complications in both groups. Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common cardiovascular disorder in dogs with a high prevalence, accounting for approximately 75% of all canine heart disease cases. MMVD is a complex disease and shows variable progression from mild valve leakage to severe regurgitation, potentially leading to heart failure. However, the molecular mechanisms and age-related changes that govern disease progression, especially at the early stage (B1) before the development of discernable clinical signs, remain poorly understood. In this prospective study, we aimed to compare gene expression differences between blood samples of aged beagle dogs with stage B1 MMVD and those of healthy controls using RNA sequencing. Clinical evaluation was also conducted, which revealed minimal differences in radiographic and echocardiographic measurements despite distinct biomarker variations between the two groups. Comparative transcriptomics revealed differentially expressed genes associated with extracellular matrix remodeling, prostaglandin metabolism, immune modulation, and interferon-related pathways, which bear functional relevance for MMVD. In particular, the top 10 over- and under-expressed genes represent promising candidates for influencing pathogenic changes in MMVD stage B1. Our research findings, which include identified variations in clinical markers and gene expression, enhance our understanding of MMVD. Furthermore, they underscore the need for further research into early diagnosis and treatment strategies, as, to the best of our knowledge, no prior studies have explored the precise molecular mechanisms of stage B1 in MMVD through total RNA sequencing.

Although climate warming arguably induces changes in species distribution, thereby causing poleward shifts in various taxa, comprehensive research on the response of moths to climate warming is lacking. This study compared the distribution of macro-moths between historical (1978–2002) and recent (2011–2016) periods in South Korea using the macro-moth data collected at 18 survey sites to elucidate the changes in community composition. We used the community temperature index (CTI) to quantify the effect of temperature change on moth community changes. The CTI represents the average value of the species temperature index (STI; mid-value of thermal range) calculated using our local observations and global occurrences reported in the online database of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Our analysis revealed no significant difference in species richness between historical and recent surveys. However, some taxa, such as Uraniidae, Nolidae, Sphingidae, and Lasiocampidae, exhibited high turnover rates, while the number of sphingid moths with large body sizes greatly decreased. The temperature changes at the survey sites became pronounced with an increase in the survey interval (year) between historical and recent surveys (temperature increase = 0.0465 ℃ /year), while the CTI change exhibited a weak signal for northward shift of moth species. The CTI using the local data indicated 0.09 km/year of northward shift of moths, which is considerably slower than the northward shift (9.6 km/year) of the isothermal bands. However, the CTI using global occurrence data, expected to improve the estimation of species thermal niches, did not show any sign of northward shift. When observed, the northward shifts of moths were primarily identified in the cold-adapted species with low STI values, suggesting that cold-adapted species are more sensitive and vulnerable to climate warming than warm-adapted species. These results indicate that the current distribution changes of species were uneven, and the species adapted to cold regions are the ones primarily responding to the temperature increase by migrating northward and to high elevations.

Abstract The challenges for stretchable organic light‐emitting diodes (SOLEDs) have led research into advanced manufacturing processes. Several electrodes have been researched to replace conventional indium tin oxide in SOLEDs due to its brittleness, indium scarcity in earth, and poor deformation capabilities. Oxide–metal–oxide (OMO) electrodes are promising alternatives for flexible/stretchable electronics owing their excellent charge injection and optical transparencies, including mechanical compliance. In this study, two oxides (i.e., MoO3 and V2O5) with different surface energies in an OMO structure to effectively inhibit the island growth of the ultra‐thin Au (5 nm) metal is incorporated. The morphology and interfacial coordinate covalent bonds between the seed layer and ultra‐thin Au film are extensively studied. The improved ultra‐thin Au growth in OMO structure together with figure‐of‐merit have been employed as the anode for a phosphorescent SOLED structure. The SOLEDs with OMO electrode under V2O5 as bottom oxide remain stable after peeling‐off and sustain a >50% uniaxial strain with a negligible reduction in luminance and current efficiencies. The surface energy and interface of the bottom oxide in the OMO structure are crucial for thin metals to attain superior optical, structural, electronic, and mechanical stability in SOLEDs.

Purpose Despite the high incidence of epilepsy during adolescence, little attention has been paid to the outcomes and prognosis of adolescent-onset epilepsy. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term pharmacological and psychosocial outcomes of adolescent-onset epilepsy. Methods From 1993 to 2019, the electronic medical records of adolescent-onset epilepsy patients were retrieved from Asan Medical Center Children’s Hospital. Seizure outcomes were evaluated based on the seizure-free period at last contact. Possible predictors of remission, relapse, and intractability were investigated. Neuropsychiatric comorbidities, socioeconomic status, and transition outcomes were also assessed. Results In total, 137 patients were enrolled in this study. The median age at diagnosis of epilepsy was 14 years and the mean duration of therapy was 13.0 years. During follow-up, 93 patients (67.9%) achieved terminal remission, of which 27 cases (19.7%) resolved. Relapse after withdrawal of medication occurred in 74 patients (54.0%), and the presence of electroencephalographic abnormalities (odds ratio [OR], 8.23; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39 to 48.87; P=0.020), poor adherence (OR, 4.84; 95% CI, 2.13 to 11.02; P=0.000), and history of febrile seizures (OR, 4.10; 95% CI, 1.21 to 13.93; P=0.024) were risk factors for relapse. Neurodevelopmental and psychological comorbidities were documented in 17 (12.4%) and 12 (8.8%) patients, respectively. Thirty-six (26.3%) patients transferred to adult clinics, at a mean age of 21.9 years. Conclusion This study showed overall favorable seizure outcomes with a high rate of remission, but with frequent relapse after withdrawal.

Background With the rapid progression of population aging worldwide, the health management of older adults is emerging as an important topic. To help prevent declines in physical and cognitive function due to aging, older adults must maintain consistent physical activity. The development of digital technology has recently allowed the optimization of exercise programs for older adults using augmented reality (AR) game technology. Methods Fifteen older adult females were enrolled in an AR-based exercise program. The program was conducted for 30 minutes, three times weekly, for a total of 6 weeks. To verify the effectiveness of the program and assess physical function before and after exercise, the following tests were performed: timed up-and-go test, five times sit-to-stand test, 1-minute sit-to-stand test, lung capacity test, respiratory muscle strength test, and bioelectrical impedance analysis. The Trail Making Test was used to evaluate cognitive function. For statistical analysis, a paired t-test was used to verify the effects on physical and cognitive function before and after exercise. Results The study results confirmed improved overall physical and cognitive function. The timed up-and-go test, maximal inspiratory pressure, and Trail Making Test part B scores showed significant increases. Conclusion This study verified the effectiveness of AR exercise in community-dwelling older adult women. In the future, exercise programs with game elements that increase the interest and motivation of participants to engage in exercise routines should be developed and applied.

Abstract Memristors for neuromorphic computing have gained prominence over the years for implementing synapses and neurons due to their nano-scale footprint and reduced complexity. Several demonstrations show two-dimensional (2D) materials as a promising platform for the realization of transparent, flexible, ultra-thin memristive synapses. However, unsupervised learning in a spiking neural network (SNN) facilitated by linearity and symmetry in synaptic weight update has not been explored thoroughly using the 2D materials platform. Here, we demonstrate that graphene/MoS2/SiOx/Ni synapses exhibit ideal linearity and symmetry when subjected to identical input pulses, which is essential for their role in online training of neural networks. The linearity in weight update holds for a range of pulse width, amplitude and number of applied pulses. Our work illustrates that the mechanism of switching in MoS2-based synapses is through conductive filaments governed by Poole-Frenkel emission. We demonstrate that the graphene/MoS2/SiOx/Ni synapses, when integrated with a MoS2-based leaky integrate-and-fire neuron, can control the spiking of the neuron efficiently. This work establishes 2D MoS2 as a viable platform for all-memristive SNNs.

Frog virus 3 (FV3) in the genus Ranavirus of the family Iridoviridae causes mass mortality in both anurans and urodeles worldwide; however, the phylogenetic origin of FV3-like ranaviruses is not well established. In Asia, three FV3-like ranaviruses have been reported in farmed populations of amphibians and reptiles. Here, we report the first case of endemic FV3-like ranavirus infections in the Korean clawed salamander Onychodactylus koreanus, caught in wild mountain streams in the Republic of Korea (ROK), through whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Two isolated FV3-like ranaviruses (Onychodactylus koreanus ranavirus, OKRV1 and 2) showed high similarity with the Rana grylio virus (RGV, 91.5%) and Rana nigromaculata ranavirus (RNRV, 92.2%) but relatively low similarity with the soft-shelled turtle iridovirus (STIV, 84.2%) in open reading frame (ORF) comparisons. OKRV1 and 2 formed a monophyletic clade with previously known Asian FV3-like ranaviruses, a sister group of the New World FV3-like ranavirus clade. Our results suggest that OKRV1 and 2 are FV3-like ranaviruses endemic to the ROK, and RGV and RNRV might also be endemic strains in China, unlike previous speculation. Our data have great implications for the study of the phylogeny and spreading routes of FV3-like ranaviruses and suggest the need for additional detection and analysis of FV3-like ranaviruses in wild populations in Asian countries.

Sinus venosus atrial septal defects (SVASDs), concurrent with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections (PAPVCs), are a rare congenital heart disease in dogs. Surgical correction is essential when clinical signs or significant hemodynamic changes are present. We aimed to report on the successful surgical correction of an SVASD with PAPVCs, using a computed tomography (CT)-based customized 3D cardiac model. A 10-month-old male poodle was referred for corrective surgery for an ASD. Echocardiography confirmed a hemodynamically significant left-to-right shunting flow through an interatrial septal defect and severe right-sided heart volume overload. For a comprehensive diagnosis, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed an SVASD with PAPVCs. A customized 3D cardiac model was used for preoperative decision-making and surgical rehearsal. The defect was repaired using an autologous pericardial patch under a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Temporary pacing was applied for sinus bradycardia and third-degree atrioventricular block. The patient recovered from the anesthesia without further complications. The pacemaker was removed during hospitalization and the patient was discharged without complications 2 weeks post-surgery. At the three-month follow-up, there was no shunting flow in the interatrial septum and the right-sided volume overload had been resolved. The cardiac medications were discontinued, and there were no complications. This report indicates the validity of surgical correction under CPB for an SVASD with PAPVCs, and the advantages of utilizing a CT-based 3D cardiac model for preoperative planning to increase the surgical success rate.

In patients with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), delayed wound healing is often observed. Timely and effective wound healing is a crucial determinant of a patient’s quality of life, and novel materials for skin wound repair, such as bioactive peptides, are continuously being studied and developed. One such bioactive peptide, AESIS-1, has been studied for its well-established anti-rheumatoid arthritis properties. In this study, we attempted to use the anti-RA material AESIS-1 as a therapeutic wound-healing agent based on disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), which can help restore prompt wound healing. The efficacy of AESIS-1 in wound healing was assessed using a full-thickness excision model in diabetic mice; this is a well-established model for studying chronic wound repair. Initial observations revealed that mice treated with AESIS-1 exhibited significantly advanced wound repair compared with the control group. In vitro studies revealed that AESIS-1 increased the migration activity of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) without affecting proliferative activity. Moreover, increased HDF cell migration is mediated by upregulating chemokine receptor expression, such as that of CXC chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2). The upregulation of CXCR2 through AESIS-1 treatment enhanced the chemotactic reactivity to CXCR2 ligands, including CXC motif ligand 8 (CXCL8). AESIS-1 directly activates the ERK and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades, which regulate the migration and expression of CXCR2 in fibroblasts. Our results suggest that the AESIS-1 peptide is a strong wound-healing substance that increases the movement of fibroblasts and the expression of CXCR2 by turning on the ERK and p38 MAPK signaling cascades.

Current flood risk management projects have been criticized for their high carbon emissions, raising the need for carbon emission reduction and carbon absorption efforts to mitigate environmental impacts and achieve carbon neutrality goals. The research develops a comprehensive green disaster risk management toolkit to calculate the carbon emissions and absorption quantitatively based on the unit volume of materials and processes employed in a flood risk management project. As a result of applying the developed toolkit to a about 22,300 small stream restoration projects in Korea, the total carbon emissions were estimated to be 1,158,840.7 tons of CO2, of which 89.4% of the total carbon emissions originated from concrete-related construction activities, such as cement and ready-mixed concrete pouring. As a result of evaluating the nationwide carbon absorption results of all small stream restoration projects, total absorption by 2030 is expected to be 3.0 to 10.2 times higher than carbon emissions. The comprehensive toolkits are expected to support the selection of customized processes, materials, and methods by providing a systematic approach to calculate and minimize carbon emissions, ultimately contributing to the achievement of carbon neutrality goals in flood risk management projects.

FAF1 (FAS-associated factor 1) is involved in the activation of Fas cell surface death receptors and plays a role in apoptosis and necrosis. In patients with Parkinson’s disease, FAF1 is overexpressed in dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. KM-819, an FAF1 inhibitor, has shown potential for preventing dopaminergic neuronal cell death, promoting the degradation of α-synuclein and preventing its accumulation. This study aimed to develop and validate a quantitative analytical method for determining KM-819 levels in rat plasma using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. This method was then applied to pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats. The metabolic stability of KM-819 was assessed in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes. In vitro metabolite identification and metabolic pathways were investigated in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes. The structural analog of KM-819, namely N-[1-(4-bromobenzyl)-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]-2-(phenylsulfanyl) acetamide, served as the internal standard (IS). Proteins were precipitated from plasma samples using acetonitrile. Analysis was carried out using a reverse-phase C18 column with a mobile phase consisting of 0.1% formic acid in distilled water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile. The cut chrysanthemum holds one of the most substantial segments of the global floriculture market, particularly in Korea. We conducted a detailed assessment of the genetic structures across the cut chrysanthemum breeding lines in Korea. Using standard and spray chrysanthemum breeding lines from leading Korean research institutes, we first compared the variability of 12 horticultural traits, revealing a wide range of variation for most traits. We found that the overall flower diameter (OFD) and ray floret length (RFL) showed a solid positive relationship, regardless of the type. From a multivariate approach, OFD, RFL, and ray floret width (RFW) show consistently high association. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation analyses further indicated the significant genetic control over most traits. However, certain traits, like the volume of flowers (VF) in standard types, are more influenced by environments. Lastly, our analysis demonstrated substantial variability in broad-sense heritability (H); plant height (PH) consistently showed high H in both types. But the number of side branches (NOSB) and VF exhibited inconsistent H scores. These findings highlight the need for type-specific breeding strategies and modulating environmental management to optimize the trait expressions depending on the H scores, which offers significant implications for future breeding strategies.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a common condition in cats, characterized by recurring gastrointestinal signs with histologic evidence of intestinal inflammation. A 9-month-old neutered male Sphynx cat was presented with a 5-week history of vomiting and hematochezia. Conservative patient management with a therapeutic gastrointestinal formula, antibiotics, and antiemetics resulted in a positive response to treatment, with relapse of signs when the medications were discontinued. A new finding of marked eosinophilia and basophilia was identified 3 months after the initial presentation. Colonoscopy revealed cecal erosions and a surgical biopsy with histopathology confirmed a diagnosis of lymphocytic-plasmacytic and eosinophilic enterocolitis. For this diagnosis, the patient was treated with prednisolone, tylosin, and metronidazole. Antibiotics were gradually tapered as the cat showed clinical improvement. The patient showed resolution of the gastrointestinal signs, and the numbers of eosinophils and basophils returned within the reference range 8 weeks after the treatment began. Basophilia and eosinophilia has been reported in conjunction with feline T-cell lymphoma. However, marked basophilia accompanying eosinophilia is extremely rare in cats with inflammatory bowel disease. We herein provide clinical details, including ultrasonography, endoscopy, histopathology, and disease course of feline lymphocytic-plasmacytic and eosinophilic enterocolitis with marked basophilia and eosinophilia. This case highlights the importance of considering enteritis as potential diagnoses when eosinophilia and basophilia are concurrently observed in cats.

Purpose This study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of cannabidiol (CBD) as an add-on therapy for childhood-onset Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Methods This retrospective study enrolled patients who visited the Department of Pediatric Neurology at Asan Medical Center from March 2019 to February 2022 and were treated with CBD. Electronic medical records and clinically relevant factors (including the type of epilepsy and seizures, etiology, and the number of concomitantly used anti-epileptic drugs) were reviewed. The outcome was clinical response to CBD (≥50% or 3 years) was associated with a favorable response to CBD treatment. Further prospective studies with larger populations are needed to evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of CBD in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy of various etiologies.

Pitfall traps using ethylene glycol as a preservative are widely used to investigate arthropods in forests. However, recently, pitfall traps have been reported to be damaged by wild vertebrates because of the sweetness of ethylene glycol. Therefore, this study compared ethylene glycol with five potential alternative preservatives for the selection of an alternative preservative for use in pitfall traps. Field experiments were conducted at the Namhae Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in the southernmost part of South Korea. The five alternative preservatives included salt solution with bleach, which is considered to repel wild animals because of its smell; formalin solution with bleach; salt solution without bleach; formalin solution without bleach; and alcohol solution with a small amount of added glycerin. The number of arthropods collected differed with the type of preservative used; the composition of arthropod assemblages was also different. Among the two alternative preservative solutions expected to repel wild animals, formalin+bleach, and salt water+bleach, the latter was found to be better for arthropod collection.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a gram-positive bacterial species that is utilised as a probiotic in humans and animals. There are no reports of infective endocarditis (IE) in dogs. An 8-year-old, spayed, female Maltese presented with a 1-month history of fever, depression, weight loss, and hindlimb lameness. Laboratory test results indicated non-regenerative anaemia, neutrophilia, hyperglobulinemia, and proteinuria. Echocardiography revealed vegetation on the septal leaflet of the mitral valve and thromboemboli in the left atrium. Consecutive blood culture results revealed that the blood samples were consistently positive for Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, which is generally considered a probiotic bacterial species for animals. Broad-spectrum antibiotics (amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and cefotaxime) and anticoagulants (clopidogrel and rivaroxaban) were administered for 4 months. The clinical signs were responsive to antibiotic treatment. After 4 months, the dog was no longer febrile and the size of the thromboemboli in the left atrium had decreased. Bacteria were no longer isolated in blood cultures after antibiotic therapy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of canine IE caused by bactaeremic infection with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens.
