Abstract

We performed extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) monotherapy on 51 patients with upper urinary tract stones using a Siemens Lithostar (C-tube) from April 1992 to April 1993. On the x-ray film obtained three months after the final ESWL treatments, 24 patients (47%) were free from stone concrements and 22 (43%) had stone fragments less than 4 mm. The over-all success rate was therefore 90.2%. No severe side effects were observed. We also examined the relationship between the degree of fragmentation seen on the immediate post-ESWL x-ray and stone status at 3 months. There was no significant correlation between them and the post-ESWL x-ray did not reflect the stone status at three months. In our experience, ESWL monotherapy using a Siemens Lithostar (C-tube) was a safe and effective treatment for upper urinary tract stones.

Abstract

Between April 1986 and July 1990, we experienced 13 cases of acute scrotum with surgical exploration. Six of the patients had torsion of the spermatic cord; three had torsion of an appendix of the epididymis, one had torsion of a testicular appendix, one had testicular rupture, one had acute epididymitis and one was normal. Their ages ranged from 3 months to 55 years (mean: 17.7 years), and the patients with torsion of the spermatic cord ranged from 5 to 25 years in age (mean: 16.3 years). No specific symptoms, signs, or laboratory findings were noted in patients with torsion of the spermatic cord. In the majority of cases, scrotal swelling and redness of the scrotal skin were present, and we could not distinguish parts of the scrotal contents. From 2 to 92 hours had passed before the patients presented, and patients who first attended other clinics tended to be treated in an inappropriate manner. Orchidopexy was performed in all patients with torsion of the spermatic cord. At present, only one testis which was treated after a delay of 92 hours has proven to be atrophic. Early consultation of a urological clinic and early surgical exploration are important in the treatment of the acute scrotum.

Abstract

The article discusses a study which examines the production of bioactive compounds based on phylogeny in the genus Penicillium. The Penicillium strains were preserved at the NITE Biological Resource Center in Japan. The strains were compared as to groupings based on phylogeny and the production of bioactive compounds. The strains in two clusters, of which P. chrysogenum and P. citrinum are representative, were found to show higher rates of positive strains with multi-biological activities.

Abstract

The article presents a comparison among genus Aspergillus in their Phylogenetic relationships and the biological activities of their secondary metabolites. The Aspergillus strains were compared based on the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences of the D1/D2 domains of LSU rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. It notes that the phylogenetic distribution and production of bioactive compounds were shown to be correlated with one another.

Abstract

Three hundred sixty-six Aspergillusstrains preserved at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) were compared as to phylogenetic relationships (11 species-clusters) based on the DNA sequences of the D1/D2 domains of LSU rRNA and ITS regions, including the 5.8S rRNA and biological activities of their secondary metabolites. The results showed relatively well correlation between the phylogenetic distribution and the production of bioactive compounds, especially, antimicrobial activities.

Abstract

過去13年間の経験である.男87, 女16例であり, また10～19歳に28例と多発していた.原因は, 交通事故が55例を占め, 以下転落16例, 一般外傷11例, スポーツ外傷8例, 労働災害7例, 暴力6例の順であった.合併損傷は54例にみられ, 胸部外傷, 腰椎横突起骨折, 頭部外傷, 四肢骨骨折, 腹部外傷の順であった.治療法別では102例中保存的治療95例(97病腎), 腎摘5例, 腎周囲ドレナージ法2例であり, 合併損傷に対しても9例に外科的治療を行った.後遺症としては, 一応治療後, 少なくも6ヵ月以上観察し得た保存的治療(腎周囲ドレナージ法1例を含む)41例ついて, 中等度腎破裂7例中1例に腎杯鈍円化を, 高度腎破裂8例中1例に腎結石, 1例に中・下腎杯変形を, また腎断裂4例中1例に下腎杯変形, 2例に無機能腎, 1例に腎結石がみられた, Between 1971 and 1983, 103 patients with renal injury were admitted to the Department of Urology, Tatebayashi Kosei Hospital. There were 87 males and 16 females. The most frequent age group seen (27.2% of patients) was the 10 to 19 year group. The various causes included traffic accidents (55 patients), falls (16 patients), athletic injuries (8 patients), labor accidents (7 patients), blows (6 patients) and others (11 patients). Associated injuries were present in 52.4% of the patients, including thoracic injuries such as rib fracture (20 patients), lumbar vertebra and transverse process fractures (18 patients), and head injuries (12 patients). Evaluation of the renal injuries was made by excretory urogram (IVP) and conservative management was for most, contusion and rupture, and operation for laceration as a principle: 95 patients (97 renal injuries) were treated by conservative management and 7 patients were treated surgically, 5 patients by nephrectomy and 2 patients by perirenal drainage. Nine patients who had associated injuries were treated surgically. In the follow-up study of 41 patients who had received conservative management and operation (perirenal drainage), followed for more than 6 months and had IVP, urinalysis and blood pressure measurement, representative changes were calyceal deformity (3 patients), renal calculus formation (2 patients) and non-functioning kidney (2 patients) in urograms.

68. Saprolegnia semihypogynasp. nov., a saprolegniaceous oomycete isolated from soil in Japan

Abstract

Saprolegnia semihypogyna, a saprolegniaceous oomycete (Saprolegniales, Oomycetes), is described based on two strains isolated from soil samples collected in Japan. It is characterized by having a new combination of sexual characters in the genus Saprolegnia, namely, producing mostly monosporous oogonia with subeccentric oospores and semihypogynous or androgynous antheridial branches. The species is morphologically similar to Scoliolegnia subeccentrica, although the oogonial wall of the former is smooth and that of the latter is densely ornamented. Morphological comparison of the two species indicates that the generic status of the genus Scoliolegniais questionable.

Abstract

Three species of the genus Brevilegnia(Saprolegniales, Oomycetes) are described and illustrated from Japan: B. megaspermavar. brevicaulis, B. unispermavar. litoralis, and B. variabilis. The Japanese B. variabilisagrees with the original description in demonstrating achlyoid- and dictyoid-type zoospore discharge patterns in addition to the thraustothecoid-type, which is the typical pattern in the genus, androgynous antheridial branch origin, and antheridial branches wrapping about the oogonia, but it produces larger oogonia and aplerotic oospores. All species are new records from Japan.

Abstract

The article discusses the process for producing new compounds from marine sponge, Desmospongiae. It notes that the novel compounds JBIR-37 (1) and -38 (2) were isolated from Acremonium sp. fungus derived from the sponge. The results showed that the structures 1 and 2 were determined as glycosyl benzene, which did not show any cytotoxic effects in human cervical carcinoma and human malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Abstract

The article presents a study which isolates a new aspochracin derivative, JBIR-15, from Aspergillus sclertiorum Huber Sp080903f04, a sponge-derived fungus. JBIR-15 was isolated with aspochracin from the culture broth of a A. sclertiorum. The structure of JBIR-15 was determined to be N-demethyl aspochracin at the alanyl residue on the basis of extensive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). It is the first derivative of which N-methyl alanine was replaced by alanine.

The most frequent age group seen (27.2% of patients) was the 10 to 19 year group. The various causes included traffic accidents (55 patients), falls (16 patients), athletic injuries (8 patients), labor accidents (7 patients), blows (6 patients) and others (11 patients). Associated injuries were present in 52.4% of the patients, including thoracic injuries such as rib fracture (20 patients), lumbar vertebra and transverse process fractures (18 patients), and head injuries (12 patients). Abstract

Three yeast isolates, NBRC 115909 T , NBRC 115910 and NBRC 116270, were isolated from Trifolium pratense (red clover) flowers collected from Kisarazu, Chiba, Japan. Analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions revealed that these isolates represent a single novel species within the genus Starmerella . Also, no ascospore formation was observed. The yeast isolates were closely related to Starmerella vitae UWOPS 00-107.2 T and Starmerella bombi NRRL Y-17081 T . They differed from S. vitae , the most closely related species with a validly published name, by ten nucleotide substitutions with two gaps in the D1/D2 domains and 20 nucleotide substitutions in the ITS region. Moreover, the three isolates exhibited distinct phenotypic characteristics from the closely related species. Therefore, we suggest that these three isolates represent a novel species, designated as Starmerella kisarazuensis f.a., sp. nov. The holotype is NBRC 115909 T (isotype: CBS 18485 T ).
