This study proposes a pupil-tracking method applicable to drivers both with and without sunglasses on, which has greater compatibility with augmented reality (AR) three-dimensional (3D) head-up displays (HUDs). Performing real-time pupil localization and tracking is complicated by drivers wearing facial accessories such as masks, caps, or sunglasses. The proposed method fulfills two key requirements: low complexity and algorithm performance. Our system assesses both bare and sunglasses-wearing faces by first classifying images according to these modes and then assigning the appropriate eye tracker. For bare faces with unobstructed eyes, we applied our previous regression-algorithm-based method that uses scale-invariant feature transform features. For eyes occluded by sunglasses, we propose an eye position estimation method: our eye tracker uses nonoccluded face area tracking and a supervised regression-based pupil position estimation method to locate pupil centers. Therapeutic applications of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have attracted considerable attention because of their immunomodulatory properties against immune-mediated, inflammatory diseases. Here, we demonstrated enhanced immunomodulatory properties of EVs secreted from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress inducer thapsigargin (TSG)-primed human Wharton’s jelly-derived MSCs (WJ-MSCs). EVs from TSG-primed WJ-MSCs (TSG-EV) showed increased yield and expression of immunomodulatory factors, such as transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2), and especially indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), compared to control EVs. TSG-EV showed a significantly enhanced immunosuppressive effect on human peripheral blood-derived T cell proliferation and Th1 and Th17 differentiation, whereas Treg and M2-type macrophage were enriched compared to a control EV-treated group. Furthermore, TSG-EV substantially mitigated mouse experimental colitis by reducing the inflammatory response and maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. A significant increase of Tregs and M2-type macrophages in colitic colons of a TSG-EV-treated mouse suggests an anti-inflammatory effect of TSG-EV in colitis model, possibly mediated by Treg and macrophage polarization. These data indicate that TSG treatment promoted immunomodulatory properties of EVs from WJ-MSCs, and TSG-EV may provide a new therapeutic approach for treatment of colitis.

Encapsulating CdS quantum dots (QDs) into zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) can offer several advantages for photocatalysis. Various types of capping agents have been used to encapsulate QDs into ZIF-8 nanopores. An effective method for encapsulating CdS QDs into ZIF-8 is to use 2-mercaptoimidazole as the capping agent. This is because 2-mercaptoimidazole is similar to the imidazolate ligands of ZIFs and can used for capping active species with simultaneous encapsulation during the crystal growth of ZIF-8. Compared to other widely used capping agents such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), using 2-mercaptoimidazole for encapsulating CdS QDs into ZIF-8 revealed photocatalytic effects along with the molecular sieving effect when using differently sized molecular redox mediators such as methyl viologen (MV2+) and diquat (DQ2+).

Recently, the need for energy-saving and eco-friendly energy systems is increasing as problems such as rapid climate change and air pollution are getting more serious. While research on a power generation system using hydrogen energy-based fuel cells, which rarely generates harmful substances unlike fossil fuels, is being done, a power generation system that combines fuel cells and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is being recognized. In the case of High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) with an operating temperature of approximately 150 to 200 °C, the importance of a thermal management system increases. It also produces the waste heat energy at a relatively high temperature, so it can be used as a heat source for ORC system. In order to achieve this outcome, waste heat must be used on a limited scale within a certain range of the temperature of the stack coolant. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize the waste heat of ORC system reflecting the stack thermal management and to establish and predict an appropriate operating range. By constructing an analytical model of a combined power generation system of HT-PEMFC and ORC systems, this study compares the stack load and power generation performance and efficiency of the system by operating temperature. In the integrated lumped thermal capacity model, the effects of stack operating temperature and current density, which are important factors affecting the performance change of HT-PEMFC and ORC combined cycle power generation, were compared according to operating conditions. In the comparison of the change in power and waste heat generation of the HT-PEMFC stack, it was shown that the rate of change in power and waste heat generation by the stack operating temperature was clearly changed according to the current density. In the case of the ORC system, changes in the thermal efficiency of the ORC system according to the operating temperature of the stack and the environmental temperature (cooling temperature) of the object to which this system is applied were characteristic. This study is expected to contribute to the establishment of an optimal operation strategy and efficient system configuration according to the subjects of the HT-PEMFC and ORC combined power generation system in the future.

Background and objectives: Thin-section computed tomography (CT) is essential for identifying small bronchi during bronchoscopy using radial endobronchial ultrasound. Some patients should receive an additional CT for a thin-section image. We performed a retrospective study with a prospectively collected database to identify the optimal radiation dose for thin-section CT during peripheral bronchoscopy. Materials and Methods: In total, 91 patients with peripheral lung lesions underwent thin-section CT (both standard CT as a reference and ultra-low-dose CT (ultra-LDCT)). The patients were randomly assigned to one of four groups according to the ultra-LDCT parameters: group 1 = 120 kVp, 25 mAs; group 2 = 100 kVp, 15 mAs; group 3 = 120 kVp, 5 mAs; and group 4 = 100 kVp, 5 mAs. Two radiologists and two physicians analyzed both the standard CT and ultra-LDCT. Results: The effective doses (EDs) of ultra-LDCT significantly differed among the four groups (median EDs were 0.88, 0.34, 0.19, and 0.12 mSv for groups 1–4, respectively; p < 0.001). Median differences in peripheral airway wall thickness were higher in group 4 than in other groups (differences in median wall thickness measured by two radiologists were 0.4–0.5 mm and 0.8–0.9 mm for groups 1–3 and group 4, respectively). Bronchus signs on ultra-LDCT in groups 1 and 2 were well correlated with those of the standard-dose CT (accuracies of two radiologists and two pulmonary physicians were 95–100%). Conclusions: Our results indicate that ultra-LDCT with ED of >0.34 mSv (ED of group 2) is feasible for peripheral bronchoscopy.

We demonstrated that Fe/Cr doped and pH-modified CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit enhanced photocatalytic performance as compared to bare CeO2 NPs, using photocatalytic degradation. To assess the toxicity level of these double-modified CeO2 NPs on the human skin, they were introduced into HaCaT cells. The results of our conventional cellular toxicity assays (neutral red uptake and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide for assays) indicated that Cr@CeOx NPs prompt severe negative effects on the viability of human cells. Moreover, the results obtained by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and bio-transmission electron microscope analysis showed that most of the NPs were localized outside the nucleus of the cells. Thus, serious genetic toxicity was unlikely. Overall, this study highlights the need to prevent the development of Cr@CeOx NP toxicity. Moreover, further research should aim to improve the photocatalytic properties and activity of these NPs while accounting for their stability issues.

Photocatalytic water splitting represents an emerging technology well positioned to satisfy the growing need for low-energy, low CO2, economically viable hydrogen gas production. As such, stable, high-surface-area electrodes are increasingly being investigated as electrodes for the photochemical conversion of solar energy into hydrogen fuel. We present a titanium dioxide (TiO2)/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire array using a hybrid hydrothermal/atomic layer deposition (ALD) for use as a solar-powered photoelectrochemical device. The nanowire array consists of single crystalline, wurtzite ZnO nanowires with a 40 nm ALD TiO2 coating. By using a TiO2 nanocoating on the high surface area-ZnO array, three advancements have been accomplished in this work: (1) high aspect ratio nanowires with TiO2 for water splitting (over 8 μm), (2) improved stability over bare ZnO nanowires during photocatalysis, and (3) excellent onset voltage. As such, this process opens up new class of the micro/nanofabrication process for making efficient photocatalytic gas harvesting systems.

Aortic dissection during pregnancy is a devastating event for both the pregnant woman and the baby. We report a case of acute aortic dissection (Stanford type A) in a pregnant woman with Marfan syndrome at the 29th week of gestation. She underwent a cesarean section followed by an ascending aorta and total arch replacement with cardiopulmonary bypass, without a prior sternotomy. The hemodynamic parameters were kept stable during the cesarean section by using inotropes and vasopressors under transesophageal echocardiography monitoring. The newborn survived after endotracheal intubation and management in a neonatal intensive care unit.

The structures and stability levels of leucine (Leu) and tyrosine (Tyr) adsorbed on a Cu(110) surface, at initial levels of coverage (less than 0.25 monolayer), were investigated using reflection−absorption infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES), as well as by performing density functional theory calculations. At an initial coverage, the O−H dissociation bonded structure was indicated from the spectral results to be the most favorable structure for Leu adsorbed on the Cu(110) surface, whereas the O−H dissociated-N dative bonded structure was most favorable for adsorbed Tyr. These models were further supported by the results of experiments, in which the systems were exposed to other molecules and HRPES was used to monitor whether the amine or carboxylic groups of the adsorbed amino acids became reactive.

Background/AimsAntibiotic usage and increasingly aging populations have led to increased incidence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in worldwide. Recent studies in Korea have also reported increasing CDI incidence; however, there have been no reports on the long-term outcomes of CDI. We therefore investigated the long-term clinical outcomes of patients with CDI, including delayed recurrence, associated risk factors and mortality.MethodsHospitalized patients diagnosed with CDI at Seoul Paik Hospital between January 2007 and December 2008 were included. Their medical records were retrospectively investigated. 'Delayed recurrence' was defined as a relapse 8 weeks after a successful initial treatment. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for the delayed recurrence. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to analyze mortality rates.ResultsA total of 120 patients were enrolled; among them, 87 were followed-up for at least 1 year, with a mean follow-up period of 34.1±25.1 months. Delayed recurrence was observed in 17 patients (19.5%), and significant risk factors were age (over 70 years, P=0.049), nasogastric tube insertion (P=0.008), and proton pump inhibitor or H2-blocker treatments (P=0.028). The 12- and 24-month mortality rates were 24.6% and 32.5%, respectively. No deaths were directly attributed to CDI.ConclusionsDelayed recurrence of CDI was not rare, occurring in 19.5% of the study population. Although CDI-related mortality was not reported, 2-year (32.5%) mortality rate of CDI patients implies that a CDI diagnosis may predict severe morbidity and poor prognosis of the underlying disease.

The increasing importance of meat quality has implications for animal breeding programs. Research has revealed much about the genetic background of pigs, and many studies have revealed the importance of various genetic factors. Since meat quality is a complex trait which is affected by many factors, consideration of the overall phenotype is very useful to study meat quality. For integrating the phenotypes, we used principle component analysis (PCA). The significant SNPs refer to results of the GRAMMAR method against PC1, PC2 and PC3 of 14 meat quality traits of 181 Duroc pigs. The Genome-wide association study (GWAS) found 26 potential SNPs affecting various meat quality traits. The loci identified are located in or near 23 genes. The SNPs associated with meat quality are in or near five genes (ANK1, BMP6, SHH, PIP4K2A, and FOXN2) and have been reported previously. Twenty-five of the significant SNPs also located in meat quality-related QTL regions, these result supported the QTL effect indirectly. Each single gene typically affects multiple traits. Therefore, it is a useful approach to use integrated traits for the various traits at the same time. This innovative approach using integrated traits could be applied on other GWAS of complex-traits including meat-quality, and the results will contribute to improving meat-quality of pork.

Recently, extensive studies on power generation using clean energy have been conducted to reduce air pollution and global warming. In particular, as existing internal combustion engines lose favor to power generation through hydrogen fuel cells, the development of tri-generation technology using efficient and reliable fuel cells is gaining importance. This study proposes a tri-generation thermal management model that enables thermal control and waste heat utilization control of a high-temperature PEMFC stack that simultaneously satisfies combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) load. As the high-temperature PEMFC stack operates at 150 °C or more, a tri-generative system using such a stack requires a thermal management system that can maintain the operating temperature of the stack and utilize the stack waste heat. Thus, to apply the waste heat produced through the stack to heating (hot water) and absorption cooling, proper distribution control of the thermal management fluid (cooling fluid) of the stack is essential. For the thermal management fluid control design, system analysis modeling was performed to selectively design the heat exchange amount of each part utilizing the stack waste heat. In addition, a thermal management system based on thermal storage was constructed for complementary waste heat utilization and active stack cooling control. Through a coupled analysis of the stack thermal management model and the absorption cooling system model, this study compared changes in system performance by cooling cycle operation conditions. This study investigated into the appropriate operating conditions for cooling operation in a tri-generative system using a high-temperature PEMFC stack.

During infection chlamydial pathogens form an intracellular membrane-bound replicative niche termed the inclusion, which is enriched with bacterial transmembrane proteins called Incs. Incs bind and manipulate host cell proteins to promote inclusion expansion and provide camouflage against innate immune responses. Sorting nexin (SNX) proteins that normally function in endosomal membrane trafficking are a major class of inclusion-associated host proteins, and are recruited by IncE/CT116. Crystal structures of the SNX5 phox-homology (PX) domain in complex with IncE define the precise molecular basis for these interactions. The binding site is unique to SNX5 and related family members SNX6 and SNX32. Intriguingly the site is also conserved in SNX5 homologues throughout evolution, suggesting that IncE captures SNX5-related proteins by mimicking a native host protein interaction. These findings thus provide the first mechanistic insights both into how chlamydial Incs hijack host proteins, and how SNX5-related PX domains function as scaffolds in protein complex assembly.

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate whether slow injection of diluted rocuronium could reduce rocuronium-induced withdrawal movements effectively in children.MethodsAfter loss of consciousness, rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg was administered into 171 children according to the pre-assigned groups as follows: Group CF, injection of non-diluted rocuronium over 5 seconds; Group CS, injection of non-diluted rocuronium over 1 minute; Group DF, injection of diluted rocuronium (10 times) over 5 seconds; Group DS, injection of diluted rocuronium over 1 minute. An investigator who was blind to the injection techniques recorded patient movements followed by rocuronium injection.ResultsThe incidence of withdrawal movement in Group CF was highest among the groups (all P < 0.0001). Moreover, withdrawal movement was less frequently observed in Group DS than in Groups CS and DF (P = 0.021 and P = 0.007, respectively).ConclusionsSlow injection of diluted rocuronium reduced the incidence of withdrawal movements in children.

As the market for electric vehicles grows at a remarkable rate, various models of electric vehicles are currently in development, in parallel to the commercialization of components for diverse types of power supply. Cabin heating and heat management components are essential to electric vehicles. Any design for such components must consider the requirements for heating capacity and power density, which need to reflect both the power source and weight reduction demand of any electric vehicle. In particular, design developments in electric heaters have predominantly focused on experimental values because of structural characteristics of the heater and the variability of heat sources, requiring considerable cost and duration. To meet the ever-changing demands of the market, an improved design process for more efficient models is essential. To improve the efficacy of the design process for electric heaters, this study conducted a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of an electric heater with specific dimensions by changing design parameters and operating conditions of key components. The CFD analysis modeled heat characteristics through the application of user-defined functions (UDFs) to reflect temperature properties of Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) elements, which heat an electric heater. Three analysis models, which included fin as well as PTC elements and applied different spaces between the heat rods, were compared in terms of heating performance. In addition, the heat performance and heat output density of each analysis model was analyzed according to the variation of air flow at the inlet of the radiation section of an electric heater. Model B was selected, and a prototype was fabricated based on the model. The performance of the prototype was evaluated, and the correlation between the analysis results and the experimental ones was identified. The error rate between performance change rates was approximately 4%, which indicated that the reliability between the design model and the prototype was attained. Consequently, the design range of effective performance and the guideline for lightweight design could be presented based on the simulation of electric heaters for various electric vehicles. The fabrication of prototypes and minimum comparison demonstrated opportunities to reduce both development cost and duration.

Myolipomas are very rare benign lipomatous soft tissue tumors which are usually located in retroperitoneum, abdominal and pelvic cavity, and the abdominal wall. They can be diagnosed histologically by the presence of irregularly admixed mature adipose tissue and smooth muscle fibers. The correct diagnosis of myolipoma is important, because it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of fat-containing lesions of the soft tissue and should follow a benign clinical course despite its frequently large size and deep location. We report here a case of myolipoma arising in the mesentery of the jejunum.

Startups are key components of the National Innovation Systems (NISs) and have contributed to sustainable development in many countries. This is because of their ability to create employment opportunities and contribute to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Hence, universities across the world have identified the importance of entrepreneurship training for students to help enhance their capability to develop their own startups. This study seeks to find ways of enhancing the profitability of student startups to galvanize industrial development. The approach adopted was the development of a hybrid model to optimize the development of entrepreneurship skills in university students based on existing theories and literatures. Data of 212 Korean universities were used and the results show that research fund, size of dedicated faculty, size of dedicated staff (academic and non-academic), practical entrepreneurship courses, and non-regular curriculum startup activities are key factors responsible for the profitability of student startups.

The present study aimed to further expound on the research findings of Strunk et al. (Educational Psychology, 41(4),383-400, 2021 (See CR56)) and Elliot and Thrash (Educational PsychologyReview, 13(2), 139-156, 2001 (See CR22)) by investigating the structure of achievement goals using a sports environment, with a specific interest in the mastery-avoidance construct. According to achievement goal theorists, mastery-avoidance goals involve the aim to avoid losing skills. Using meta-analytic confirmatory factor analysis, the present study found that the 2 x 2 model that included mastery-avoidance goals did not significantly differ from the three-factor model. Mastery-avoidance goals may be more measurable among athletes than in other populations; however, the null difference suggests that the mastery-avoidance construct may need further examination.
