56. How long can cultural events elevate group identity salience? The mediating role of affective adaptation.

Abstract

Cultural events have been found to make one's group identity temporarily more salient. How long such an elevated sense of identity can endure remains, however, an empirical question. Building upon the model of affective adaptation, we propose that the elevated sense of group identity may decrease quickly during a culturally important event, and this process is mediated by the decline of positive emotions during the event. Consistent with this prediction, a diary study (Study 1) with a Chinese sample observed that Chinese identity was very salient at the beginning of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and then was gradually neutralized during the event. Moreover, the dissipation of positive emotions during the event mediated temporal change of the salience of Chinese identity. An experiment (Study 2) further showed that positive emotions during national-identity-related events could create the initial elevation and subsequent decline of the salience of the group identity. 57. Nano-Engineered Polymer Composites Synthesized by SI-ATRP - From Synthesis to Novel Materials

Abstract

This thesis describes the design and use of nanofillers (NFs) synthesized by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The history of polymer/inorganic (hybrid) nanocomposites (NCs), the development and fundamentals of SI-ATRP are discussed in the introductory chapter. Chapters II and III present the major challenges in SI-ATRP, including the surface confinement effect that influences the polymerization kinetics and unavoidable termination reactions that limit the molecular weight of polymers tethered on surfaces. Chapter II discusses the experiments that demonstrate the surface confinement effects which were found to be a minor contributor to controlled chain growth in normal SI-ATRP, with one exception, when one attempts to polymerize sterically bulky and hydrophilic monomers. Chapter III discusses ways to suppress termination reactions that contribute to molecular weight limitations by carrying out the reactions under high-pressure, high-dilution, or/and at high-temperature. In addition to extend the fundamental understanding and improvements of SI-ATRP, Chapters IV and V discuss the use of NFs to create novel nanostructured functional materials. Chapter IV focuses on the preparation of traditional filler-matrix composites. Mechanically and thermally stable films with silica nanoparticle (SiO2) filler loadings up to 70 wt% were achieved by introducing enthalpy interactions to improve the dispersibility of SiO2 in a selected matrix. Chapter V presents approaches that allow preparation of a procesesable self-assembled film of hybrid NCs that do not require blending with a host matrix. This class of material was created by NF self-assembly and interparticle brush entanglement which provided uniform NF dispersion in a monolayer film with zero aggregation, as observed by transmission electron microscopy. Chapter VI, VII, and VIII further expands the scope of materials designed in Chapter IV and V. Chapter VI specifically studies the structure-properties relationship of the particle-brush composites and the confirmation that controls the polymer conformation and interface strength which are the keys for various enhanced properties. Chapter VII discusses the effects of thermal self-initiation of styrene (S) on the properties of particle-brush materials. Chapter VIII discusses the use of particle-brush hybrid particles to synthesize porous nanocarbons.

61. The Manhattan Effect: When Relationship Commitment Fails to Promote Support for Partners' Interests

Abstract

Research on close relationships has frequently contrasted one's own interests with the interests of the partner or the relationship and has tended to view the partner's and the relationship's interests as inherently aligned. The present article demonstrated that relationship commitment typically causes people to support their partner's personal interests but that this effect gets weaker to the extent that those interests misalign or even threaten the relationship. Studies 1a and 1b showed that (a) despite their strong correlation, partner-oriented and relationship-oriented concerns in goal-directed behaviors are separable and (b) relationship commitment strengthens only the link between relationship-oriented motivation and the goal pursuit (not the link between partner-oriented motivation and the goal pursuit). The remaining 7 studies zero in on circumstances in which the partner's and the relationship's interests are in conflict, demonstrating that (c) relationship commitment reliably increases the tendency to support the partner's personal interests when those interests do not pose a strong threat to the relationship but that (d) this effect becomes weaker-and even reverses direction-as the relationship threat posed by the partner's interests becomes stronger. The reduction or reversal of the positive link between relationship commitment and propartner behaviors in such situations is termed the Manhattan effect. These findings suggest that the partner-versus-relationship conflicts provide fertile ground for novel theorizing and empirical investigations and that relationship commitment appears to be less of a partner-promoting construct than relationship science has suggested; instead, its role appears to be focused on promoting the interests of the relationship.

Abstract

Surface-initiated atom transfer radicalpolymerization (SI-ATRP)has emerged as a powerful tool to synthesize polymer-tethered particles(here called particle brushes) that can self-assemble into hybridmaterials with well-defined microstructure, morphology, and enhancedmechanical properties or optical transparency, as compared to binaryparticle/polymer nanocomposite materials. However, side reactionssuchas the thermal self-initiation (TSI) of some monomers, such as styrene,during the polymerizationcan result in the formation of varyingamounts of homopolystyrene, in addition to particle brushes. The presenceof homopolystyrene impurity reduces the predictability of propertiesand impedes the interpretation of structure–property relationsin particle brush materials. This contribution presents a systematicevaluation of the formation of TSI homopolystyrene and its implicationson the properties of polystyrene-tethered silica based particle brushmaterials. Kinetic and molecular weight studies reveal that the fractionof untethered chains generated by TSI depends on reaction conditionsand increases with the degree of polymerization of surface-tetheredchains. The presence of homopolystyrene results not only in a decreaseof the softening temperature but also in an increase of ductilityand toughness of particle brush solids. Structural analysis of particlebrush assemblies admixed with small particle tracer inclusions suggeststhat the increase in ductility is related to the preferential segregationof the polystyrene impurity within the corner regions of the Wigner–Seitzcell of the particle brush array. Surface-initiatedatom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP)has become an indispensable tool for engineering the structure andproperties of polymer/inorganic and polymer/organic interfaces. Thisarticle describes the progress and challenges that are associatedwith the application of SI-ATRP to precisely control the molecularcharacteristics of polymer chains tethered to nanoparticle surfacesand explores the properties and potential applications of the resultingparticle brush materials. Even for the conceptually most “simple”particle brush systemsthat is, spherical particles uniformlygrafted with amorphous nonpolar polymersthe complex superpositionof interactions as well as time- and length-scales related to particlecore and tethered chains provides a rich and largely unexplored parameterspace for the design of novel functional materials. The applicationof the particle brush approach to the development of materials forapplications ranging from photonic inks and paints to advanced high“k” dielectrics for energy storageand advanced nanocomposite materials with improved optical, mechanical,or transport characteristics is discussed.
