We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra of the CMB measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 5400 deg$^2$ of the 2013-2016 survey, which covers $>$15000 deg$^2$ at 98 and 150 GHz. For this analysis we adopt a blinding strategy to help avoid confirmation bias and, related to this, show numerous checks for systematic error done before unblinding. Using the likelihood for the cosmological analysis we constrain secondary sources of anisotropy and foreground emission, and derive a "CMB-only" spectrum that extends to $\ell=4000$. At large angular scales, foreground emission at 150 GHz is $\sim$1% of TT and EE within our selected regions and consistent with that found by Planck. Using the same likelihood, we obtain the cosmological parameters for $\Lambda$CDM for the ACT data alone with a prior on the optical depth of $\tau=0.065\pm0.015$. $\Lambda$CDM is a good fit. The best-fit model has a reduced $\chi^2$ of 1.07 (PTE=0.07) with $H_0=67.9\pm1.5$ km/s/Mpc. We show that the lensing BB signal is consistent with $\Lambda$CDM and limit the celestial EB polarization angle to $\psi_P =-0.07^{\circ}\pm0.09^{\circ}$. We directly cross correlate ACT with Planck and observe generally good agreement but with some discrepancies in TE. We construct cosmic microwave background lensing mass maps using data from the 2014 and 2015 seasons of observations with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). These maps cover 2100 square degrees of sky and overlap with a wide variety of optical surveys. The maps are signal dominated on large scales and have fidelity such that their correlation with the cosmic infrared background is clearly visible by eye. We also create lensing maps with thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich contamination removed using a novel cleaning procedure that only slightly degrades the lensing signal-to-noise ratio. The cross-spectrum between the cleaned lensing map and the BOSS CMASS galaxy sample is detected at $10$-$\sigma$ significance, with an amplitude of $A=1.02 \pm 0.10$ relative to the Planck best-fit LCDM cosmological model with fiducial linear galaxy bias. We report, for the first time, the detection of the Mn-K$\alpha$ line in the Type IIb supernova (SN IIb) remnant, Cassiopeia A. Manganese ($^{55}$Mn after decay of $^{55}$Co), a neutron-rich element, together with chromium ($^{52}$Cr after decay of $^{52}$Fe), is mainly synthesized at the explosive incomplete Si burning regime. Therefore, the Mn/Cr mass ratio with its neutron excess reflects the neutronization at the relevant burning layer during the explosion. Chandra's archival X-ray data of Cassiopeia A indicate a low Mn/Cr mass ratio with values in the range 0.10--0.66, which, when compared to one-dimensional SN explosion models, requires that the electron fraction be 0.4990 $\lesssim Y_{\rm e} \lesssim$ 0.5 at the incomplete Si burning layer. An explosion model assuming a solar-metallicity progenitor with a typical explosion energy ($1 \times 10^{51}$ erg) fails to reproduce such a high electron fraction. In such models, the explosive Si-burning regime extends only to the Si/O layer established during the progenitor's hydrostatic evolution; the $Y_e$ in the Si/O layer is lower than the value required by our observational constraints. We can satisfy the observed Mn/Cr mass ratio if the explosive Si-burning regime were to extend into the O/Ne hydrostatic layer, which has a higher $Y_{\rm e}$. This would require an energetic ($> 2 \times 10^{51}$ erg) and/or asymmetric explosion of a sub-solar metallicity progenitor ($Z \lesssim 0.5Z_{\odot}$) for Cassiopeia A. The low initial metallicity can be used to rule out a single-star progenitor, leaving the possibility of a binary progenitor with a compact companion (white dwarf, neutron star or black hole). We discuss the detectability of X-rays from Bondi accretion onto such a compact companion around the explosion site. Despite progress in training neural networks for lossy image compression, current approaches fail to maintain both perceptual quality and abstract features at very low bitrates. Encouraged by recent success in learning discrete representations with Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoders (VQ-VAEs), we motivate the use of a hierarchy of VQ-VAEs to attain high factors of compression. We show that the combination of stochastic quantization and hierarchical latent structure aids likelihood-based image compression. This leads us to introduce a novel objective for training hierarchical VQ-VAEs. Our resulting scheme produces a Markovian series of latent variables that reconstruct images of high-perceptual quality which retain semantically meaningful features. We provide qualitative and quantitative evaluations on the CelebA and MNIST datasets.

We present new constraints on anisotropic birefringence of the cosmic microwave background polarization using two seasons of data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope covering $456$ square degrees of sky. The birefringence power spectrum, measured using a curved-sky quadratic estimator, is consistent with zero. Our results provide the tightest current constraint on birefringence over a range of angular scales between $5$ arcminutes and $9$ degrees. We improve previous upper limits on the amplitude of a scale-invariant birefringence power spectrum by a factor of between $2$ and $3$. Assuming a nearly-massless axion field during inflation, our result is equivalent to a $2\,\sigma$ upper limit on the Chern-Simons coupling constant between axions and photons of $g_{\alpha\gamma}<4.0\times 10^{-2}/H_I$ where $H_I$ is the inflationary Hubble scale., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in PRD

We examine the stacked thermal Sunyaev-Zel\text{'}dovich (SZ) signals for a sample of galaxy cluster candidates from the Spitzer-HETDEX Exploratory Large Area (SHELA) Survey, which are identified in combined optical and infrared SHELA data using the redMaPPer algorithm. We separate the clusters into three richness bins, with average photometric redshifts ranging from 0.70 to 0.80. The richest bin shows a clear temperature decrement at 148 GHz in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope data, which we attribute to the SZ effect. All richness bins show an increment at 220 GHz, which we attribute to dust emission from cluster galaxies. We correct for dust emission using stacked profiles from Herschel Stripe 82 data, and allow for synchrotron emission using stacked profiles created by binning source fluxes from NVSS data. We see dust emission in all three richness bins, but can only confidently detect the SZ decrement in the highest richness bin, finding $M_{500}$ = $8.7^{+1.7}_{-1.3} \times 10^{13} M_\odot$. Neglecting the correction for dust depresses the inferred mass by 26 percent, indicating a partial fill-in of the SZ decrement from thermal dust and synchrotron emission by the cluster member galaxies. We compare our corrected SZ masses to two redMaPPer mass--richness scaling relations and find that the SZ mass is lower than predicted by the richness. We discuss possible explanations for this discrepancy, and note that the SHELA richnesses may differ from previous richness measurements due to the inclusion of IR data in redMaPPer., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. {\it Chandra} X-ray observations of Kepler's supernova remnant indicate the existence of a high speed Fe-rich ejecta structure in the southwestern region. We report strong K-shell emission from Fe-peak elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni), as well as Ca, in this Fe-rich structure, implying that those elements could be produced in the inner area of the exploding white dwarf. We found Ca/Fe, Cr/Fe, Mn/Fe and Ni/Fe mass ratios of 1.0--4.1\%, 1.0--4.6\%, 1--11\% and 2--30\%, respectively. In order to constrain the burning regime that could produce this structure, we compared these observed mass ratios with those in 18 one-dimensional Type Ia nucleosynthesis models (including both near-$M_{\rm Ch}$ and sub-$M_{\rm Ch}$ explosion models). The observed mass ratios agree well with those around the middle layer of incomplete Si-burning in Type Ia nucleosynthesis models with a peak temperature of $\sim$(5.0--5.3)$\times$10$^{9}$ K and a high metallicity, Z $>$ 0.0225. Based on our results, we infer the necessity for some mechanism to produce protruding Fe-rich clumps dominated by incomplete Si-burning products during the explosion. Optimal analyses of many signals in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) require map-level extraction of individual components in the microwave sky, rather than measurements at the power spectrum level alone. To date, nearly all map-level component separation in CMB analyses has been performed exclusively using satellite data. In this paper, we implement a component separation method based on the internal linear combination (ILC) approach which we have designed to optimally account for the anisotropic noise (in the 2D Fourier domain) often found in ground-based CMB experiments. Using this method, we combine multi-frequency data from the Planck satellite and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol) to construct the first wide-area, arcminute-resolution component-separated maps (covering approximately 2100 sq. deg.) of the CMB temperature anisotropy and the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect sourced by the inverse-Compton scattering of CMB photons off hot, ionized gas. Our ILC pipeline allows for explicit deprojection of various contaminating signals, including a modified blackbody approximation of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) spectral energy distribution. The cleaned CMB maps will be a useful resource for CMB lensing reconstruction, kinematic SZ cross-correlations, and primordial non-Gaussianity studies. The tSZ maps will be used to study the pressure profiles of galaxies, groups, and clusters through cross-correlations with halo catalogs, with dust contamination controlled via CIB deprojection. In this paper we probe the hot, post-shock gas component of quasar-driven winds through the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. Combining datasets from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, the $\textit{Herschel}$ Space Observatory, and the Very Large Array, we measure average spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 109,829 optically-selected, radio quiet quasars from 1.4~GHz to 3000~GHz in six redshift bins between $0.31.91$, we measure the tSZ effect at $3.8\sigma$ significance with an amplitude corresponding to a total thermal energy of $3.1\times10^{60}$ ergs. If this energy is due to virialized gas, then our measurement implies quasar host halo masses are $\sim6\times10^{12}~h^{-1}$M$_\odot$. Alternatively, if the host dark matter halo masses are $\sim2\times10^{12}~h^{-1}$M$_\odot$ as some measurements suggest, then we measure a $>$90 per cent excess in the thermal energy over that expected due to virialization. If the measured SZ effect is primarily due to hot bubbles from quasar-driven winds, we find that $(5^{+1.2}_{-1.3}$) per cent of the quasar bolometric luminosity couples to the intergalactic medium over a fiducial quasar lifetime of 100 Myr. An additional source of tSZ may be correlated structure, and further work is required to separate the contributions. At $z\leq1.91$, we detect emission at 95 and 148~GHz that is in excess of thermal dust and optically thin synchrotron emission. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. We present a catalog of 510 radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN, primarily blazars) and 287 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope at $>5\sigma$ significance in bands centered on 148 GHz (2 mm), 218 GHz (1.4 mm) and 277 GHz (1.1 mm), from a 480 square degrees strip on the celestial equator with additional (360 square degrees) shallower fields. Combining the deepest available 218 GHz wide-field imaging, 277 GHz data, and multi-band filtering yields the most sensitive wide-field millimeter-wave DSFG selection to date with rms noise referenced to 218 GHz reaching $<2$ mJy. We developed techniques to remove Galactic contamination from the extragalactic catalog, yielding 321 additional Galactic sources. We employ a new flux debiasing method that handles the heterogeneous sample selection due to Galactic cuts. We present spectral properties and source counts of the AGN and DSFGs. The DSFG spectra depart from an optically thin modified blackbody between 218 GHz and 277 GHz, consistent with optically thick emission or an additional cold dust component. For bright AGN, the inter-year RMS fractional deviation in flux density from source variability is $\sim40\%$. We report 8$-$2870 mJy source counts for AGN and 8$-$90 mJy source counts for DSFGs, the latter probing both the brighter, lensed population and the fainter, unlensed population. At 277 GHz we report the first source counts measurements at these flux densities, finding an excess above most model count predictions. Finally, we select thirty of the brightest DSFGs for multi-frequency study as candidate high-$z$ lensed systems., Comment: 42 pages. Accepted version. We report our measurements of the bulk radial velocity from a sample of small, metal-rich ejecta knots in Kepler's Supernova Remnant (SNR). We measure the Doppler shift of the He-like Si K$\alpha$ line center energy in the spectra of these knots based on our $Chandra$ High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observation to estimate their radial velocities. We estimate high radial velocities of up to $\sim$ 8,000 km s$^{-1}$ for some of these ejecta knots. We also measure proper motions for our sample based on the archival $Chandra$ Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) data taken in 2000, 2006, and 2014. Our measured radial velocities and proper motions indicate that some of these ejecta knots are almost freely-expanding after $\sim$ 400 years since the explosion. The fastest moving knots show proper motions up to $\sim$ 0.2 arcseconds per year. Assuming that these high velocity ejecta knots are traveling ahead of the forward shock of the SNR, we estimate the distance to Kepler's SNR $d$ $\sim$ 4.4 to 7.5 kpc. We find that the ejecta knots in our sample have an average space velocity of $ v_{s} \sim$ 4,600 km s$^{-1}$ (at a distance of 6 kpc). We note that 8 out of the 15 ejecta knots from our sample show a statistically significant (at the 90$\%$ confidence level) redshifted spectrum, compared to only two with a blueshifted spectrum. This may suggest an asymmetry in the ejecta distribution in Kepler's SNR along the line of sight, however a larger sample size is required to confirm this result., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 17 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Clumpy structures are a common feature in X-ray images of young Type Ia supernova remnants (SNRs). Although the precise origin of such clumps remains unclear there are three generic possibilities: clumpiness imposed during the explosion, hydrodynamic instabilities that act during the remnant's evolution, and pre-existing structures in the ambient medium. In this article we focus on discriminating between clumping distributions that arise from the explosion and those from the remnant's evolution using existing 3D hydrodynamical simulations. We utilize the genus statistic for this discrimination, applying it to the simulations and {\it Chandra} X-ray observations of the well-known SN Ia remnant of SN 1572 (Tycho's SNR). The genus curve of Tycho's SNR strongly indicates a skewed non-Gaussian distribution of the ejecta clumps and is similar to the genus curve for the simulation with initially clumped ejecta. In contrast, the simulation of perfectly smooth ejecta where clumping arises from the action of hydrodynamic instabilities produced a genus curve that is similar to a random Gaussian field, but disagrees strongly with the genus curve of the observed image. We measure the expansion of the forward shock of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant 1E\,0102.2-7219 in X-rays using Chandra X-Ray Observatory on-axis Advanced CCD Imaging Spectromete(ACIS) observations from 1999-2016. We estimate an expansion rate of 0.025%\pm0.006%yr^{-1} and a blast-wave velocity of 1.61\pm0.37\times10^3 km s^{-1}. Assuming partial electron-ion equilibration via Coulomb collisions and cooling due to adiabatic expansion, this velocity implies a postshock electron temperature of 0.84\pm0.20 keV which is consistent with the estimate of 0.68\pm0.05 keV based on the X-ray spectral analysis. We combine the expansion rate with the blast wave and reverse shock radii to generate a grid of one-dimensional models for a range of ejecta masses (2-6 \msol) to constrain the explosion energy, age, circumstellar density, swept-up mass, and unshocked-ejecta mass. We find acceptable solutions for a constant density ambient medium and for an r^{-2} power-law profile (appropriate for a constant progenitor stellar wind). For the constant density case, we find an age of \sim 1700 yr, explosion energies 0.87-2.61\times10^{51} erg, ambient densities 0.85-2.54 amu cm^{-3}, swept-up masses 22-66 \msol, and unshocked-ejecta masses 0.05-0.16 \msol. For the power-law density profile, we find an age of \sim 2600 yr, explosion energies 0.34-1.02\times10^{51} erg, densities 0.22-0.66 amu cm^{-3} at the blast wave, swept-up masses 17-52 \msol, and unshocked-ejecta masses 0.06-0.18 \msol. Assuming the true explosion energy was 0.5-1.5\times10^{51} erg, ejecta masses 2-3.5 \msol are favored for the constant density case and 3-6 \msol for the power-law case. The unshocked-ejecta mass estimates are comparable to Fe masses expected in core-collapse supernovae with progenitor mass 15.0-40.0 \msol, offering a possible explanation for the lack of Fe emission observed in X-rays.

We present deep ($205 \rm ks$), \Chandra observations of the \ab295 binary merging cluster ($z=0.30$). In the X-ray image, the secondary component is clearly visible as a surface brightness peak, while the primary cluster has a flatter distribution. We found cool gas ($\sim 6 \rm keV$) associated with the secondary, while the central temperature of the primary does not deviate significantly from the mean temperature of the cluster of $\sim 9.5 \rm keV$. In the vicinity of the primary's core we found the hottest region in the cluster accompanied by a surface brightness discontinuity. We propose that this region corresponds to a shock, for which we estimate a Mach number of $1.24_{-0.22}^{+0.30}$. We found other merger signatures such as a plume of cool gas emerging from the primary cluster and a cold front and a possible bow shock (Mach number of $1.74_{-0.74}^{+1.02}$) leading the secondary cluster. Based on the observed properties in comparison to binary merger simulations from the literature we propose for \ab295 a low mass ratio, off-axis merging scenario, with secondary close to first apocentre. Comparison of our results with strong lensing observations of \ab295 from \cite{Cibirka2018} shows an offset between the total mass peak and the bulk of the gas distribution in the primary cluster. The properties of the merger and the existence of the offset between mass peak and gas make \ab295 a promising candidate for the study of mergers involving non-cool core clusters and the nature of dark matter., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

G292.0+1.8 (G292) is a young ($\sim$3000 yr), Galactic textbook-type core-collapse supernova remnant (CCSNR). It is characterized by X-ray, optical and infrared emission from ejecta and circumstellar medium (CSM) features, and contains a pulsar (PSR J1124-5916) and pulsar wind nebula that have been observed in X-rays and radio. Previous studies have revealed a complex, dynamically evolving, oxygen-rich remnant, a striking relic from the explosion of a massive star. Here, using our deep (530 ks) $\textit{Chandra}$ ACIS data, we present high spatial-resolution maps (based on a regional grid size of a few arcsec) of the shocked CSM and metal-rich ejecta in G292. We make the first $\textit{Chandra}$-detection of Fe-rich ejecta in G292. We identify the X-ray counterpart of the northern equatorial belt, a component of a ring-like CSM structure identified earlier in the infrared band. We show the detailed spatial distributions of ejecta enriched in O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and Fe. We find that the bulk of the Si, S and Fe-rich X-ray-emitting ejecta are located in the northwestern hemisphere of the remnant, opposite to the pulsar's projected angular displacement to the southeast from the SNR's center. This suggests that the pulsar's kick may have originated from gravitational and hydrodynamic forces during an asymmetric explosion, rather than from anisotropic neutrino emission. Based on abundance ratios and our estimated CSM and ejecta masses, we constrain the progenitor mass to 13 M$_{\odot}$ $\lesssim$ M $\lesssim$ 30 M$_{\odot}$, Comment: 7 tables and 15 figures. We report on measurements of the polarization of extragalactic sources at 148 GHz made during the first two seasons of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarization (ACTPol) survey. The survey covered 680 deg$^{2}$ of the sky on the celestial equator. Polarization measurements of 169 intensity-selected sources brighter than 30 mJy, that are predominantly Active Galactic Nuclei, are presented. Above a total flux of 215 mJy where the noise bias removal in the polarization measurement is reliable, we detect 26 sources, 14 of which have a detection of linear polarization at greater than 3$\sigma_{p}$ significance. The distribution of the fractional polarization as a function of total source intensity is analyzed. Our result is consistent with the scenario that the fractional polarization of our measured radio source population is independent of total intensity down to the limits of our measurements and well described by a Gaussian distribution with a mean fractional polarization $p=0.028\pm$0.005 and standard deviation $\sigma_{\mathrm{p}}=0.054$, truncated at $p=0$. Extrapolating this model for the distribution of source polarization below the ACTPol detection threshold, we predict that one could get a clean measure of the E-mode polarization power spectrum of the microwave background out to $\ell=6000$ with 1 $\mu$K-arcminute maps over 10$\%$ of the sky from a future survey. We also study the spectral energy distribution of the total and polarized source flux densities by cross-matching with low radio frequency catalogs. We do not find any correlation between the spectral indices for total flux and polarized flux.

Angular momentum is taught in every classical mechanics course. It is a difficult topic with misconceptions commonly forming significant barriers to student success. My intention in writing this paper is to combat some of the most common misconceptions and to help prepare freshman and sophomore students for success in their upper-level classical mechanics courses. The paper begins with a discussion of several fundamental equations relating to angular momentum. We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1 $\pm$ 10.6)% and, the polarization angle is 110.7$^o$ + 13.2 / $-$13.0$^o$ in the energy range of 60--160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. We report on newly identified galaxy clusters from the high signal-to-noise ($>5$-$\sigma$) end of the second all-sky \textit{Planck} Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) catalog (PSZ2). The clusters are identified in deep, optical imaging from the Kitt Peak National Observatory 4m Mayall telescope taken between 2014 and 2017. Here we focus on the highest richness systems, and identify galaxy clusters through a combination of the maxBCG algorithm and visual image inspection. Galaxy clusters are considered to be confirmed if they are both rich and spatially coincident ($\lesssim 6'$) with the reported PSZ2 position. Of the 85 fields containing unconfirmed PSZ2 candidates observed, we find 15 (17.6% of the observed sample) corresponding galaxy clusters ($ 0.13 < z < 0.78$), 12 of which are previously unrecognized as counterparts. To explain this low identification fraction, we consider three possible scenarios: that clusters are (1) mostly at low-z, (2) mostly at high-z, or (3) located in fields with high object density. None of these scenarios alone can account for the low purity of rich galaxy clusters among the high signal-to-noise PSZ2 unconfirmed candidates., Comment: 14 pages, 8 Figures, Accepted by ApJ

R package sklarsomega provides tools for measuring agreement using Sklar's omega coefficient, which subsumes Krippendorff's alpha coefficient, which in turn subsumes a number of other well-known agreement coefficients. The package permits users to apply the omega methodology to nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio scores; can accommodate any number of units, any number of coders, and missingness; and can measure intra-coder agreement, inter-coder agreement, and agreement relative to a gold standard. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background experiment being built on Cerro Toco in Chile, due to begin observations in the early 2020s. We describe the scientific goals of the experiment, motivate the design, and forecast its performance. SO will measure the temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background in six frequency bands: 27, 39, 93, 145, 225 and 280 GHz. The initial configuration of SO will have three small-aperture 0.5-m telescopes (SATs) and one large-aperture 6-m telescope (LAT), with a total of 60,000 cryogenic bolometers. Our key science goals are to characterize the primordial perturbations, measure the number of relativistic species and the mass of neutrinos, test for deviations from a cosmological constant, improve our understanding of galaxy evolution, and constrain the duration of reionization. The SATs will target the largest angular scales observable from Chile, mapping ~10% of the sky to a white noise level of 2 $\mu$K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, to measure the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, at a target level of $\sigma(r)=0.003$. The LAT will map ~40% of the sky at arcminute angular resolution to an expected white noise level of 6 $\mu$K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, overlapping with the majority of the LSST sky region and partially with DESI. With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from the Planck satellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio. In QuickCheck (or, more generally, random testing), it is challenging to control random data generators' distributions---specially when it comes to user-defined algebraic data types (ADT). In this paper, we adapt results from an area of mathematics known as branching processes, and show how they help to analytically predict (at compile-time) the expected number of generated constructors, even in the presence of mutually recursive or composite ADTs. Using our probabilistic formulas, we design heuristics capable of automatically adjusting probabilities in order to synthesize generators which distributions are aligned with users' demands. We provide a Haskell implementation of our mechanism in a tool called DRaGeN and perform case studies with real-world applications. When generating random values, our synthesized QuickCheck generators show improvements in code coverage when compared with those automatically derived by state-of-the-art tools., Comment: Extended version

We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope 610 MHz observations of 14 Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) clusters, including new data for nine. The sample includes 73\% of ACT equatorial clusters with $M_{500} > 5 \times 10^{14}\;M_\odot$. We detect diffuse emission in three of these (27$^{+20}_{-14}$\%): we detect a radio mini-halo in ACT-CL J0022.2$-$0036 at $z=0.8$, making it the highest-redshift mini-halo known; we detect potential radio relic emission in ACT-CL J0014.9$-$0057 ($z=0.533$); and we confirm the presence of a radio halo in low-mass cluster ACT-CL J0256.5+0006, with flux density $S_{610} = 6.3\;\pm\;0.4$ mJy. We also detect residual diffuse emission in ACT-CL J0045.9$-$0152 ($z=0.545$), which we cannot conclusively classify. For systems lacking diffuse radio emission, we determine radio halo upper limits in two ways and find via survival analysis that these limits do not significantly affect radio power scaling relations. Several clusters with no diffuse emission detection are known or suspected mergers, based on archival X-ray and/or optical measures; given the limited sensitivity of our observations, deeper observations of these disturbed systems are required in order to rule out the presence of diffuse emission consistent with known scaling relations. In parallel with our diffuse emission results, we present catalogs of individual radio sources, including a few interesting extended sources. Our study represents the first step towards probing the occurrence of diffuse emission in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim0.5$) clusters, and serves as a pilot for statistical studies of larger cluster samples with the new radio telescopes available in the pre-SKA era., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS - appendices available online only

We present weak-lensing measurements using the first-year data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Survey Program on the Subaru telescope for eight galaxy clusters selected through their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal measured at 148 GHz with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter experiment. The overlap between the two surveys in this work is 33.8 square degrees, before masking bright stars. The signal-to-noise ratio of individual cluster lensing measurements ranges from 2.2 to 8.7, with a total of 11.1 for the stacked cluster weak-lensing signal. We fit for an average weak-lensing mass distribution using three different profiles, a Navarro-Frenk-White profile, a dark-matter-only emulated profile, and a full cosmological hydrodynamic emulated profile. We interpret the differences among the masses inferred by these models as a systematic error of 10\%, which is currently smaller than the statistical error. We obtain the ratio of the SZ-estimated mass to the lensing-estimated mass (the so-called hydrostatic mass bias $1-b$) of $0.74^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$, which is comparable to previous SZ-selected clusters from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and from the {\sl Planck} Satellite. An algorithm is provided for performing polynomial feature expansions that both operates on and produces compressed sparse row (CSR) matrices. Previously, no such algorithm existed, and performing polynomial expansions on CSR matrices required an intermediate densification step. The algorithm performs a $K$-degree expansion by using a bijective function involving $K$-simplex numbers of column indices in the original matrix to column indices in the expanded matrix. Not only is space saved by operating in CSR format, but the bijective function allows for only the nonzero elements to be iterated over and multiplied together during the expansion, greatly improving average time complexity. For a vector of dimensionality $D$ and density $0 \le d \le 1$, the algorithm has average time complexity $\Theta(d^KD^K)$ where $K$ is the polynomial-feature order; this is an improvement by a factor $d^K$ over the standard method. The statistical measurement of agreement is important in a number of fields, e.g., content analysis, education, computational linguistics, biomedical imaging. We propose Sklar's Omega, a Gaussian copula-based framework for measuring intra-coder, inter-coder, and inter-method agreement as well as agreement relative to a gold standard. We demonstrate the efficacy and advantages of our approach by applying it to both simulated and experimentally observed datasets, including data from two medical imaging studies. Application of our proposed methodology is supported by our open-source R package, sklarsomega, which is available for download from the Comprehensive R Archive Network.

We present a multi-wavelength analysis of 48 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) detected in the LABOCA/ACT Survey of Clusters at All Redshifts, LASCAR, which acquired new 870 $\mu$m and ATCA 2.1 GHz observations of ten galaxy clusters detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) signal by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. Far-infrared observations were also conducted with the PACS (100/160 $\mu$m) and SPIRE (250/350/500 $\mu$m) instruments on $Herschel$ for sample subsets of five and six clusters. LASCAR 870 $\mu$m, maps were reduced using a multi-scale iterative pipeline that removes the SZE increment signal, yielding point-source sensitivities of $\sigma\sim2\rm{\,mJy\,beam}^{-1}$. We detect in total 49 sources at the $4\sigma$ level, and conduct a detailed multi-wavelength analysis considering our new radio and far-IR observations plus existing near-IR and optical data. One source is identified as a foreground galaxy, 28 SMGs are matched to single radio sources, 4 have double radio counterparts, and 16 are undetected at 2.1 GHz but tentatively associated in some cases to near-IR/optical sources. We estimate photometric redshifts for 34 sources with secure (25) and tentative (9) matches at different wavelengths, obtaining a median $z=2.8^{+2.1}_{-1.7}$. Compared to previous results for single-dish surveys, our redshift distribution has a comparatively larger fraction of sources at $z>3$ and the high-redshift tail is more extended. This is consistent with millimeter spectroscopic confirmation of a growing number of high-$z$ SMGs and relevant for testing of cosmological models. Analytical lens modeling is applied to estimate magnification factors for 42 SMGs at cluster-centric radii $>1.2$'; with the demagnified flux densities and source-plane areas, we obtain integral number counts that agree with previous submillimeter surveys., Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures

We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5$-$0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of $\Gamma_1=1.74\pm0.02$ and $\Gamma_2=2.14\pm0.01$ below and above the break at $7.1\pm0.3$ keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result ($\sim9.0$ keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833$-$1034 with the HXI and SGD. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 $\sigma$. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. The present paper investigates the temperature structure of the X-ray emitting plasma in the core of the Perseus cluster using the 1.8--20.0 keV data obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi Observatory. A series of four observations were carried out, with a total effective exposure time of 338 ks and covering a central region $\sim7'$ in diameter. The SXS was operated with an energy resolution of $\sim$5 eV (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV. Not only fine structures of K-shell lines in He-like ions but also transitions from higher principal quantum numbers are clearly resolved from Si through Fe. This enables us to perform temperature diagnostics using the line ratios of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and to provide the first direct measurement of the excitation temperature and ionization temperature in the Perseus cluster. The observed spectrum is roughly reproduced by a single temperature thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium, but detailed line ratio diagnostics reveal slight deviations from this approximation. In particular, the data exhibit an apparent trend of increasing ionization temperature with increasing atomic mass, as well as small differences between the ionization and excitation temperatures for Fe, the only element for which both temperatures can be measured. The best-fit two-temperature models suggest a combination of 3 and 5 keV gas, which is consistent with the idea that the observed small deviations from a single temperature approximation are due to the effects of projection of the known radial temperature gradient in the cluster core along the line of sight. Comparison with the Chandra/ACIS and the XMM-Newton/RGS results on the other hand suggests that additional lower-temperature components are present in the ICM but not detectable by Hitomi SXS given its 1.8--20 keV energy band., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 9 tables. The Hitomi SXS spectrum of the Perseus cluster, with $\sim$5 eV resolution in the 2-9 keV band, offers an unprecedented benchmark of the atomic modeling and database for hot collisional plasmas. It reveals both successes and challenges of the current atomic codes. The latest versions of AtomDB/APEC (3.0.8), SPEX (3.03.00), and CHIANTI (8.0) all provide reasonable fits to the broad-band spectrum, and are in close agreement on best-fit temperature, emission measure, and abundances of a few elements such as Ni. For the Fe abundance, the APEC and SPEX measurements differ by 16%, which is 17 times higher than the statistical uncertainty. This is mostly attributed to the differences in adopted collisional excitation and dielectronic recombination rates of the strongest emission lines. We further investigate and compare the sensitivity of the derived physical parameters to the astrophysical source modeling and instrumental effects. The Hitomi results show that an accurate atomic code is as important as the astrophysical modeling and instrumental calibration aspects. Substantial updates of atomic databases and targeted laboratory measurements are needed to get the current codes ready for the data from the next Hitomi-level mission., Comment: 46 pages, 25 figures, 11 tables. We present new Herschel observations of four massive, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE)-selected clusters at $0.3 \leq z \leq 1.1$, two of which have also been observed with ALMA. We detect 19 Herschel/PACS counterparts to spectroscopically confirmed cluster members, five of which have redshifts determined via CO($4-3$) and [CI](${}^3P_1 - {}^3P_0$) lines. The mean [CI]/CO line ratio is $0.19 \pm 0.07$ in brightness temperature units, consistent with previous results for field samples. We do not detect significant stacked ALMA dust continuum or spectral line emission, implying upper limits on mean interstellar medium (H$_2$ + HI) and molecular gas masses. An apparent anticorrelation of $L_{IR}$ with clustercentric radius is driven by the tight relation between star formation rate and stellar mass. We find average specific star formation rate log(sSFR/yr$^{-1}$) = -10.36, which is below the SFR$-M_*$ correlation measured for field galaxies at similar redshifts. The fraction of infrared-bright galaxies (IRBGs; $\log (L_{IR}/L_\odot) > 10.6$) per cluster and average sSFR rise significantly with redshift. For CO detections, we find $f_{gas} \sim 0.2$, comparable to those of field galaxies, and gas depletion timescales of about 2 Gyr. We use radio observations to distinguish active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from star-forming galaxies. At least four of our 19 Herschel cluster members have $q_{IR} < 1.8$, implying an AGN fraction $f_{AGN} \gtrsim 0.2$ for our PACS-selected sample., Comment: Accepted in ApJ, 46 pages, 13 figures

We present Hitomi observations of N132D, a young, X-ray bright, O-rich core-collapse supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Despite a very short observation of only 3.7 ks, the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) easily detects the line complexes of highly ionized S K and Fe K with 16-17 counts in each. The Fe feature is measured for the first time at high spectral resolution. Based on the plausible assumption that the Fe K emission is dominated by He-like ions, we find that the material responsible for this Fe emission is highly redshifted at ~800 km/s compared to the local LMC interstellar medium (ISM), with a 90% credible interval of 50-1500 km/s if a weakly informative prior is placed on possible line broadening. This indicates (1) that the Fe emission arises from the supernova ejecta, and (2) that these ejecta are highly asymmetric, since no blue-shifted component is found. The S K velocity is consistent with the local LMC ISM, and is likely from swept-up ISM material. These results are consistent with spatial mapping that shows the He-like Fe concentrated in the interior of the remnant and the S tracing the outer shell. The results also show that even with a very small number of counts, direct velocity measurements from Doppler-shifted lines detected in extended objects like supernova remnants are now possible. Thanks to the very low SXS background of ~1 event per spectral resolution element per 100 ks, such results are obtainable during short pointed or slew observations with similar instruments. This highlights the power of high-spectral-resolution imaging observations, and demonstrates the new window that has been opened with Hitomi and will be greatly widened with future missions such as the X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (XARM) and Athena., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 1 table.
