59. The impact of inter-firm authentic leadership on relationship performance in the buyer-supplier context

Abstract

The literature on buyer-supplier relationships suggests that supplier responsiveness is a critical driver for buyer firm responsiveness and also the entire supply chain's responsiveness. Beyond documented contracts, the social interactions and socially embedded relationships can also help buyer firms to manage their suppliers' responsiveness. Leadership has been regarded as an important antecedent of social interactions and exchange relationships, but most studies in inter-organizational leadership have only been carried out in a small number of areas. Previous studies of inter-organizational leadership have not dealt with limitations of applying traditional leadership styles to the inter-organizational context. This thesis answers this lacuna by examining the effect of authentic leadership on supplier responsiveness. A survey with a sample of 224 supplier firms operating in China was conducted, covering a broad spectrum of industries, firm size, and ownership structures. Data management and analysis were mainly performed using SPSS 25. The results show that buyer authentic leadership is positively related to justice perceptions of suppliers, and further influences supplier responsiveness. Moreover, the findings show that the positive relationships between buyer authentic leadership and justice perceptions are enhanced when suppliers operate in intensively competitive markets. While this positive relationship between buyer authentic leadership and perceived procedural justice is weakened in the face of a high level of dependence asymmetry within a buyer-supplier relationship, the positive relationship between buyer authentic leadership and justice perceptions is not moderated by dependence asymmetry. This thesis expands the existing knowledge about the role of authentic leadership in the channel context. First, leadership has not been studied well in the dyadic relationship. Only a few studies have focused on the effect of traditional leadership shown by a focal firm on influencing the entire supply chain. This thesis is an important addition to the current focus on traditional leadership styles in managing buyer-supplier relationships by unveiling that authentic leadership shown by buyers affects supplier responsiveness. Second, this thesis further reveals the mechanism through which buyer authentic leadership can enhance supplier responsiveness by examining the mediating roles of perceived procedural justice and distributive justice in dyadic relationships based on social exchange theory. Third, this thesis enriches previous research, which posits authentic leadership is a favourable driver of organizational performance. This thesis develops an extensive model by revealing the context in which buyer authentic leadership is most effective in enhancing supplier responsiveness. From a managerial perspective, this thesis suggests that buyers should practice authentic leadership in relationships with their suppliers by showing care about the situations of suppliers, transparency in exchanges and interactions, and a standard of ethics. In doing so, suppliers feel treated in a respectful way, in return, they will be responsive to the buyer firms' demands and requirements. Moreover, it is imperative for buyers to enhance perceived procedural justice and distributive justice in the buyer-supplier relationship, with particular attention to perceived procedural justice because perceived procedural justice could bring up suppliers' perceptions of distributive justice. Finally, buyers should take the external environment (e.g., the markets where suppliers operate) and inter-firm structure (e.g., dependence asymmetry) into consideration when rationalizing the use of authentic leadership to enhance supplier responsiveness.

Abstract

Radial superlattices are nanostructured materials obtained by rolling-up thin solid films into spiral-like tubular structures. The formation of these "high-order" superlattices from two-dimensional crystals or ultrathin films is expected to result in a transition of transport characteristics from two-dimensional to one-dimensional. Here, we show that a transport hallmark of radial superlattices is the appearance of magnetoconductance modulations in the presence of externally applied axial magnetic fields. This phenomenon critically relies on electronic interlayer tunneling processes that activates an unconventional Aharonov-Bohm-like effect. Using a combination of density functional theory calculations and low-energy continuum models, we determine the electronic states of a paradigmatic single-material radial superlattice -- a two-winding carbon nanoscroll -- and indeed show momentum-dependent oscillations of the magnetic states in axial configuration, which we demonstrate to be entirely due to hopping between the two windings of the spiral-shaped scroll., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

AIM: To construct an in vitro model of oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) induced injury to the optic nerve and to study the oxidative damage mechanism of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in 661W cells and the protective effect of ginsenoside Rg1. METHODS: The 661W cells were treated with different concentrations of Na2S2O4 to establish OGD/R model in vitro. Apoptosis, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were measured at different time points during the reperfusion injury process. The injury model was pretreated with graded concentrations of ginsenoside Rg1. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to measure the expression levels of cytochrome C (cyt C)/B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl2)/Bcl2 associated protein X (Bax), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), caspase9, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (nrf2), kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (keap1) and other genes. Abstract

Regions of high mammographic density (MD) in the breast are characterised by a proteoglycan (PG)-rich fibrous stroma, where PGs mediate aligned collagen fibrils to control tissue stiffness and hence the response to mechanical forces. Literature is accumulating to support the notion that mechanical stiffness may drive PG synthesis in the breast contributing to MD. We review emerging patterns in MD and other biological settings, of a positive feedback cycle of force promoting PG synthesis, such as in articular cartilage, due to increased pressure on weight bearing joints. Furthermore, we present evidence to suggest a pro-tumorigenic effect of increased mechanical force on epithelial cells in contexts where PG-mediated, aligned collagen fibrous tissue abounds, with implications for breast cancer development attributable to high MD. Finally, we summarise means through which this positive feedback mechanism of PG synthesis may be intercepted to reduce mechanical force within tissues and thus reduce disease burden.

Abstract

The subset sum problem is a typical NP-complete problem that is hard to solve efficiently in time due to the intrinsic superpolynomial-scaling property. Increasing the problem size results in a vast amount of time consuming in conventionally available computers. Photons possess the unique features of extremely high propagation speed, weak interaction with environment and low detectable energy level, therefore can be a promising candidate to meet the challenge by constructing an a photonic computer computer. However, most of optical computing schemes, like Fourier transformation, require very high operation precision and are hard to scale up. Here, we present a chip built-in photonic computer to efficiently solve the subset sum problem. We successfully map the problem into a waveguide network in three dimensions by using femtosecond laser direct writing technique. We show that the photons are able to sufficiently dissipate into the networks and search all the possible paths for solutions in parallel. In the case of successive primes the proposed approach exhibits a dominant superiority in time consumption even compared with supercomputers. Our results confirm the ability of light to realize a complicated computational function that is intractable with conventional computers, and suggest the subset sum problem as a good benchmarking platform for the race between photonic and conventional computers on the way towards "photonic supremacy"., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

93. RASSF1A Suppression as a Potential Regulator of Mechano-Pathobiology Associated with Mammographic Density in BRCA Mutation Carriers.

Abstract

High mammographic density (MD) increases breast cancer (BC) risk and creates a stiff tissue environment. BC risk is also increased in BRCA1/2 gene mutation carriers, which may be in part due to genetic disruption of the tumour suppressor gene Ras association domain family member 1 (RASSF1A), a gene that is also directly regulated by tissue stiffness. High MD combined with BRCA1/2 mutations further increase breast cancer risk, yet BRCA1/2 mutations alone or in combination do not increase MD. The molecular basis for this additive effect therefore remains unclear. We studied the interplay between MD, stiffness, and BRCA1/2 mutation status in human mammary tissue obtained after prophylactic mastectomy from women at risk of developing BC. Our results demonstrate that RASSF1A expression increased in MCF10DCIS.com cell cultures with matrix stiffness up until ranges corresponding with BiRADs 4 stiffnesses (~16 kPa), but decreased in higher stiffnesses approaching malignancy levels (>50 kPa). Similarly, higher RASSF1A protein was seen in these cells when co-cultivated with high MD tissue in murine biochambers. Conversely, local stiffness, as measured by collagen I versus III abundance, repressed RASSF1A protein expression in BRCA1, but not BRCA2 gene mutated tissues; regional density as measured radiographically repressed RASSF1A in both BRCA1/2 mutated tissues. The combinatory effect of high MD and BRCA mutations on breast cancer risk may be due to RASSF1A gene repression in regions of increased tissue stiffness.
