Abstract

Multicolor luminescent segmented materials have attracted tremendous research interest due to their potential applications as barcoding materials in information security and anti‐counterfeiting. Although much effort has been devoted to the preparation of photonic barcodes based on different light‐emitting materials, the rational design of barcoding materials with well‐controlled emission color and length at desired position remains a challenge. Here, a novel strategy to fabricate multicolor luminescent segmented 1D molecular crystals is reported by manipulating the molecular conformation and intermolecular interactions of the mechanochromic crystals, which are assembled from a rationally designed twisting conjugated molecule. The emission color of these mechanochromic crystals changes from green to orange with the mechanism of synergy effect of force‐induced molecular isomerization from trans to cis state and molecular packing changes from cross to parallel, which is revealed by single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Multicolor luminescent segmented 1D microribbons are fabricated by applying precisely controlled forces by tapping mode atomic force microscope, which shows the encoding capability. These findings provide a new method that allows the controllable fabrication of segmented materials with tunable emission color and length at desired position toward barcoding applications. Abstract

Delving into the intricate world of cancer cells requires a profound understanding of the signaling molecules released from the cells. In this contribution, ammonia (NH3) is monitored, a small signaling molecule and potential cancer biomarker, on the cell surfaces through liquid crystal elastomer microspheres (LCEM) at the single‐cell level. The LCEM are synthesized from molecular building blocks, 7‐octenoic acid (7OAc) and 2‐methyl‐1,4‐phenylene bis(4‐((acryloyloxy)hexyl)oxy) benzoate (RM82) and adorned on the surfaces of healthy human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and cancerous, human primary glioblastoma (U87), human colon carcinoma (CaCo‐2), and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7) cells, cultured within microfluidic channels. The ethereal release of NH3 from living cells is monitored through a radial‐to‐concentric transfiguration of LCEM. The cellular heterogeneity among cancerous cell populations is unraveled by mapping the LCEM morphology on 100 cells of each cell line. The LCEM paves the way for designing probes that offer selective, simplistic, and label‐free monitoring of the biochemical processes unfurling on the surfaces of living cells, which are challenging to measure through other analytical techniques. 100. A recyclable covalent organic framework for selective removal of Hg(II) and sunlight-driven sterilization in water

Abstract

Mercury ions (Hg2+) and bacteria are widely spread in water pollution and pose a great threat to human health and the environment. Herein, a multifunctional COF DmtaTph with significant Hg2+adsorption capability and continuous sunlight-driven sterilization property is designed and synthesized by introducing thioether and photosensitive porphyrin in a single molecule. The obtained COF displays a high Hg2+adsorption capacity of 657.9 mg/g at 298 K and a superior antibacterial effect toward Escherichia coliand Staphylococcus aureusunder sunlight irradiation. Mechanistic studies reveal that the strong coordination between S species and Hg2+is the main driving force for high Hg2+adsorption capability. The sterilization mechanism clarifies that the inactivation of bacteria is caused by 1O2produced from DmtaTph with the assistance of light irradiation. Noteworthy, when DmtaTph is applied in the treatment of wastewater, it displays high Hg2+removal efficiency and remarkable antibacterial effect under complex conditions. This study has demonstrated a promising strategy for designing multifunctional COF-based materials, offering great potential in tackling the problem of heavy metal ions and bacteria pollution in water.
