This study used the lexicality effects on N400 to investigate orthographic processing in children with developmental dyslexia. Participants performed a Go/No-Go semantic judgment task; three types of stimuli—real characters (RC), pseudocharacters (PC), and noncharacters (NC)—were embedded in No-Go trials. Two types of lexicality effects (RC vs. NC and PC vs. NC) were used to reflect the sensitivity to Chinese orthographic knowledge. In typical developing children, NC elicited a more negative N400 in frontal sites and a less negative N400 in bilateral posterior sites than RC and PC. The reversed lexicality effects in anterior and posterior sites support the dual-mechanism for lexical retrieval. Children with dyslexia revealed a more negative N400 for NC in frontal sites compared with RC, suggesting that they remained sensitive to orthographic familiarity. However, no difference between NC and PC was observed, suggesting a weakness in capturing Chinese orthographic knowledge in children with dyslexia. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objectives: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is proposed to predict future occurrence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. There are some other 'non-traditional' risk factors such as hematogram components that are also related to the same endpoints as MetS. In this four-year longitudinal study, we used hematogram components to build models for predicting future occurrence of MetS in older men and women separately. Methods: Subjects above 65 years without MetS and related diseases were enrolled. All subjects were followed up until they developed MetS or until up to four years from the day of entry, whichever was earlier. Results: Among the 4539 study participants, 1327 developed MetS. Models were built for men and women separately and the areas under the receiver operation curves were significant. The Kaplan-Meier plot showed that the models could predict future MetS. Finally, Cox regression analysis showed that the hematogram model was correlated to future MetS with hazard ratios of 1.567 and 1.738 in men and women, respectively. Conclusion: Our hematogram models could significantly predict future MetS in elderly and might be more practical and convenient for daily clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Low-grade inflammatory status was thought to be a major underlying mechanism in MetS. White blood cell (WBC) count was one of the inflammatory markers identified to be associated with MetS. Moreover, not only WBC but also hemoglobin (Hb) and platelet (PLT) were all associated with MetS. Objective: In this study, we tried to build models by the hematogram components. In this way, we can not only predict the occurrence of MetS with a relatively low-cost and routine lab test, but also can understand more about the relationships between low grade inflammation and MetS. Methods: We randomly collected subjects over 65 years old from MJ Health Screening Center's database between 1999 and 2008. After excluding subjects with medications for hypertension, hyperlipidemia and/or diabetes, 13 132 female were eligible for analysis. Results: All the MetS components, hematogram parameters and age were higher in group with MetS. In the correlation matrix, all these three hematogram parameters (WBC, Hb and PLT) were correlated with MetS components except for the correlation between Hb and HDL-C. The ROC curves showed that the model 3 (PLT + Hb + WBC) had greatest area under the curve of 0.631 with the sensitivity of 58.1% and specificity of 61.4%. Conclusions: Our findings have shown that all the three hematogram parameters are related to MetS. The results not only shed light on the complex relationships, but also demonstrate a common and easy model to aid clinicians to be more aware of the occurrence of MetS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pupil size primarily changes to regulate the amount of light entering the retina, optimizing the balance between visual acuity and sensitivity for effective visual processing. However, research directly examining the relationship between pupil size and visual processing has been limited. While a few studies have recorded pupil size and EEG signals to investigate the role of pupil size in visual processing, these studies have predominantly focused on the domain of visual sensitivity. Causal effects of pupil size on visual acuity, therefore, remain poorly understood. By manipulating peripheral background luminance levels and target stimulus contrast while simultaneously recording pupillometry and EEG signals, we examined how absolute pupil size affects visual discrimination and visually evoked potentials (VEP) in a task using optotype mimicking the Snellen eye chart, the most common assessment of visual acuity. Our findings indicate that both higher background luminance levels and higher target contrast were associated with improved target discrimination and faster correct reaction times. Moreover, while higher contrast visual stimuli evoked larger VEPs, the effects of pupil size on VEPs were not significant. Additionally, we did not observe inter-individual correlations between absolute pupil size and discrimination performance or VEP amplitude. Together, our results demonstrate that absolute pupil size, regulated by global luminance level, played a functional role in enhancing visual discrimination performance in an optotype discrimination task. Previous research on the perception of segmental features of languages has established a correlation between the phoneme inventory of a language and its speakers' perceptual abilities, as indexed by discrimination tasks and Mismatch Negativity (MMN). Building on this background, the current study elucidated the relationship between perceptual ability and tonal inventory by utilizing two tonal languages. Two groups of participants were included in the present experiment: Mandarin speakers and Hakka-Mandarin speakers. Onset latency analysis revealed a significant difference in the Mandarin syllable condition, with Hakka-Mandarin speakers demonstrating earlier MMN latency than Mandarin speakers. This suggests a more efficient auditory processing mechanism in Hakka-Mandarin speakers. Both groups, however, showed similar MMN latency in the Hakka syllable condition. The interaction between language background and syllable type indicates that other factors, such as syllable sonority, also influence MMN responses. Background: Allergic diseases are a growing public health concern with increasing prevalence and severity. Allergens play significant roles in triggering immune responses and the development of allergic reactions., Objective: Investigate the presence and clinical significance of dust mites, storage mites, and predatory mite Cheyletus eruditus(Ce) in household environments., Methods: A survey of household dust was performed to determine mite occurrence and analyze influencing factors, an analysis of the correlation between mite species and allergic symptoms, and basophil activation triggered by mite allergens. Cross-reactivity between Ce and house dust mites was assessed., Results: The high appearance rate of mite species in households of Taiwan was Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) and D. farinae(Df). Environmental factors such as pet keeping, vacuum cleaner usage, air conditioner usage, proximity to the kitchen, cleaning frequency, and protein concentration in beds were shown to influence mite prevalence. The appearance of Dp and Df significantly increased the occurrence of airway and nasal symptoms, while the presence of Ce was strongly correlated with skin symptoms. The activation of basophils and the correlation between specific IgE levels and allergic symptoms in response to Ce exposure were demonstrated. The presence of Ce was associated with elevated levels of allergens in bedding. The IgE adsorption between mite species was demonstrated suggesting cross-reactivity between the Ce and Dp was limited. Presence of Ce is associated with elevated levels of major mite allergens in beddings., Conclusion: Allergenicity of Ce was confirmed by IgE reactivity and basophil activation regarding mite infestation as a potential cause of skin-related allergy.

Background/aims: Nonalchoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been reported as a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome (MetS); it is common and accounts for 80% of the cases with abnormal liver function tests (LFTs). In addition, several studies have proved that there is a correlation between abnormal LFTs and MetS. Therefore, LFTs may represent the abnormal metabolic status of livers in the patients with MetS. To identify the early state of metabolic dysfunction, we investigate the value of LFTs for the future MetS development in the relatively healthy (non-NAFLD) elderly., Patients and Methods: A total of 16,912 subjects met the criteria for analysis. In the first stage of this study, subjects were enrolled in the cross-sectional study in order to find out the optimal cutoff value in different LFTs with higher chances to have MetS. In the second stage of the present study, subjects with MetS at baseline were excluded from the same study group, and a median 5.6-year longitudinal study was conducted on the rest of the group., Results: Among all LFTs, only aspartate aminotransferase in both genders and the α-fetal protein in women failed to show the significance in distinguishing subjects with MetS by the receiver operating characteristic curve. In the Kaplan-Meier plot, only γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) in men and the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in women could be used to successfully separate subjects with higher risk of developing the MetS from those with lower risk. Finally, in the multivariant Cox regression model, similar results were identified. Still, the hazard ratio (HR) to have future MetS, γ-GT in men, and ALT in women showed significance (HR = 1.511 in men and 1.504 in women)., Conclusion: Among all the different LFTs, γ-GT (>16 U/L) in male and ALT (>21 U/L) in female were the best predictors for the development of MetS in healthy elderly. These two liver markers could be an ancillary test in predicting future MetS development/diagnosis. Elevation of the LFTs without underlying liver diseases should be treated as a warning sign of the possible MetS development in the elderly.
