This paper presents a new approach to the solution of optimal power generation for economic emission load dispatch (EELD) using space search algorithm to a hybrid power system. The proposed space search algorithm (SSA) has been applied on 23 benchmark test functions and the results were compared with Gravitational search algorithm (GSA), Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Differential evolution (DE) and Grey wolf optimizer (GWO). The results show that SSA method is able to provide very competitive results compared to other established meta-heuristics. After that, the economy objective function is minimized, followed by minimization of emission level objective function. Then, both the objectives are combined through a fuzzy coordination method to form a fuzzy decision making (FDM) function. Maximizing the FDM function then solves the original two-objective problem. The minimization and maximization tasks of this optimization problem are solved by the space search algorithm. The optimisation technique was applied to the hybrid system and a conventional power system with only three conventional thermal generators. A control structure design of a three-phase three-leg four-wire grid-tied Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (DSTATCOM) based on a combined-step-size real-coefficient improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (CSS-RIP-APSA) has been presented. The three-phase four-wire DSTATCOM is used for reactive power compensation along with harmonic current minimization. This strategy also helps in load balancing and neutral current compensation. The affine projection sign algorithm (APSA) is a member of the adaptive filter family, which has a slow convergence rate. The conventional adaptive filter deals with the trade-off between the convergence rate and the steady-state error. In the proposed algorithm, the RIP-APSA adaptive filter with two different step sizes has been designed to decrease the computational burden while achieving the advantages of a fast convergence rate and reduced steady-state error. The proposed controller also makes the inverter function a shunt compensator. The controller primarily evaluates the fundamental weight component of distorted load currents. The aim of the proposed system is to compensate for reactive power and to ensure unity power factor during the faulty conditions as well as for unbalancing grid conditions. Summary: In this paper, a new fuzzy lead‐lag controller for a coordinated structure combining static synchronous series compensator and power system stabilizer is designed to improve the power system stability. The controller parameters are optimized by using a modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA). The newly proposed MWOA attains a suitable balance among exploration and exploitation phases of WOA. This potential of this MWOA is certified by means of utilizing the benchmark functions and by further comparing with that of a few heuristic algorithms such as whale optimization algorithm, fast evolutionary programming algorithm, gravitational search algorithm, differential evolution, and particle swarm optimization. Here, the MWOA technique is utilized to tune the parameters of the proposed controller. The controller is tested under various loading conditions as well as system configurations such as single‐machine infinite bus system and multimachine power system. Finally, the simulation results so obtained using the designed controller under different disturbance conditions are contrasted with that of the conventional lead‐lag structure controller.
