It is shown that it is impossible to construct a free theory of fermions on infinite hypercubic Euclidean lattice in even number of dimensions that: (a) is ultralocal, (b) respects the symmetries of hypercubic lattice, (c) chirally nonsymmetric part of its propagator is local, and (d) describes single species of massless Dirac fermions in the continuum limit. This establishes non-ultralocality for arbitrary doubler-free Ginsparg-Wilson fermionic action with hypercubic symmetries ("strong non-ultralocality"), and complements the earlier general result on non-ultralocality of infinitesimal Ginsparg-Wilson-Luscher symmetry transformations ("weak non-ultralocality")., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure, LATEX. I comment on the above paper(s) discussing the issue of non-ultralocality for Ginsparg-Wilson fermionic actions. The purpose of this note is to point out that the new claim in "v3" (Feb 24, 2000), alleging the proof for "all Ginsparg-Wilson fermions", might not be substantiated. I propose a large class of stochastic Markov processes associated with probability distributions analogous to that of lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions. The construction incorporates the idea of approximate spectral split of the determinant through local loop action, and the idea of treating the infrared part of the split through explicit diagonalizations. Important recent discoveries suggest that Ginsparg-Wilson-Luscher (GWL) symmetry has analogous dynamical consequences for the theory on the lattice as chiral symmetry does in the continuum. While it is well known that inherent property of lattice chiral symmetry is fermion doubling, we show here that inherent property of GWL symmetry is that the infinitesimal symmetry transformation couples fermionic degrees of freedom at arbitrarily large lattice distances (non-ultralocality). The Baxter 8-vertex model is equivalent to a particular lattice formulation of a self-interacting, massive Dirac fermion theory. In the time-continuum limit, the lattice Hamiltonian (XYZ spin chain) can be explicitly transformed to a lattice Dirac Hamiltonian. We show that the kernel describing the quadratic part of this Hamiltonian satisfies a one-dimensional version of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. The corresponding conserved charge is derived and compared with the conserved arrow number of the 8-vertex model., Comment: LATTICE98(chiral)

We analyze the autocorrelations for the LHMC algorithm in the context of free field theory. In this case this is just Adler's overrelaxation algorithm. We consider the algorithm with even/odd, lexicographic, and random updates, and show that its efficiency depends crucially on this ordering of sites when optimized for a given class of operators. In particular, we show that, contrary to previous expectations, it is possible to eliminate critical slowing down (z[int]=0) for a class of interesting observables, including the magnetic susceptibility: this can be done with lexicographic updates but is not possible with even/odd (z[int]=1) or random (z[int]=2) updates. We are considering the dynamical critical exponent z[int] for integrated autocorrelations rather than for the exponential autocorrelation time; this is reasonable because it is the integrated autocorrelation which determines the cost of a Monte Carlo computation., Comment: LaTeX, 33 pages, 3 postscript figures

We study the non-reversibility of molecular dynamics trajectories arising from the amplification of rounding errors. We analyse the causes of such behaviour and give arguments, indicating that this does not pose a significant problem for Hybrid Monte Carlo computations. The theoretical justification of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm depends upon the molecular dynamics trajectories within it being exactly reversible. If computations were carried out with exact arithmetic then it would be easy to ensure such reversibility, but the use of approximate floating point arithmetic inevitably introduces violations of reversibility. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, we are usually prepared to accept that such rounding errors can be made small enough to be innocuous, but in certain circumstances they are exponentially amplified and lead to blatantly erroneous results. We show that there are two types of instability of the molecular dynamics trajectories which lead to this behavior, instabilities due to insufficiently accurate numerical integration of Hamilton's equations, and intrinsic chaos in the underlying continuous fictitious time equations of motion themselves. We analyze the former for free field theory, and show that it is essentially a finite volume effect. For the latter we propose a hypothesis as to how the Liapunov exponent describing the chaotic behavior of the fictitious time equations of motion for an asymptotically free quantum field theory behaves as the system is taken to its continuum limit, and explain why this means that instabilities in molecular dynamics trajectories are not a significant problem for Hybrid Monte Carlo computations. The phase diagram of the Schwinger model on the lattice with one and two degenerate flavours of Wilson fermions is investigated in the Hartree-Fock approximation. In case of a single flavour (not directly amenable to numerical simulation), the calculation indicates the existence of the parity violating phase at both weak and intermediate-to-strong couplings. In the broken phase, the Hartree-Fock vacuum sustains a nonzero electric field. With two flavours, parity is not broken at weak coupling. In a Hamiltonian formalism we study chiral symmetry for lattice Fermions formulated in terms of Shockley surface states bound to a wall in an extra spatial dimension. For hadronic physics this provides a natural scheme for taking quark masses to zero without requiring a precise tuning of parameters. We illustrate the chiral anomaly as a flow of states in this extra dimension. We discuss two alternatives for extending the picture to a chiral coupling of gauge fields to such Fermions; one with a small explicit breaking of gauge symmetry and one one with heavy mirror Fermions., Comment: 25 pages, BNL-60062

We give a Hamiltonian discussion of surface states in an extra dimension as a basis for chiral fermions in lattice models. Such modes appear with the Wilson fermion action when the hopping parameter exceeds a critical value.
