Abstract

Retention is a major problem for engineering majors, including Electrical and Computer Engineering students. Multiple factors contribute to retention issues, such as poor teaching and advising, the difficulty of the engineering curriculum, and lack of motivation resulting from poor connections to the engineering community. Statistics indicate a large drop in the continuation rate between the first and third years among Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) students. As students encounter increasing course difficulty in the early stages of their programs, they often lack motivation to persist because they have weak connections to their majors and potential careers in STEM. The Summer Interdisciplinary Team Experience (SITE), part of the National Science Foundation Science Talent Expansion Program aimed at increasing the number of bachelor degrees awarded in STEM fields, focused on students finishing sophomore-level courses in engineering, math, and physical sciences. The primary goal of SITE was to create a STEM community through participation in small research projects that students worked collaboratively on from concept to completion. In this 3-week summer program, students in interdisciplinary teams of ten worked closely with faculty mentors to develop solutions to socially relevant STEM problems. The projects emphasized hands-on activities and interdisciplinary team-based learning and decision making in order to keep students motivated and interested throughout the project. Faculty mentors first introduced the team to the project concept, then helped them develop the skills and knowledge needed to implement solutions. At the end of the 3-week period, each team made a formal presentation that discussed goals, methodologies, challenges and results. The presentations were accompanied by a live demonstration of the final product. Qualitative assessment based on participants' answers to exit questionnaires show that the program accomplished its goal to increase motivation to complete the STEM major. Although our program was not limited to Under Represented Minority (URM) students, the participation of URM students far exceeds their representations in most of the participating STEM majors. Abstract

We introduce a model in which a wire made of shape memory alloy is used to passively damp the vibrations of a membrane. The mechanical energy of the membrane is transformed into heat via the thermo-elastic properties of the shape memory alloy. We describe the model and prove existence and uniqueness of solutions. Finally we will show that for suitable initial and boundary conditions, the energy of the entire system is a decreasing function.

Abstract

It often occurs that a system can be described by several competing models. In order to distinguish among the alternative models, further information about the behavior of the system is required. One way to obtain such information is to perform suitably chosen perturbation experiments. We introduce a method for the selection of optimal perturbation experiments for discrimination among a set of dynamical models. The models are assumed to have the form of semi-quantitative differential equations. The method employs an optimization criterion based on the entropy measure of information.

74. A knowledge-based approach for lifelike gesture animation

Abstract

The inclusion of additional modalities into the communicative behavior of virtual agents besides speech has moved into focus of human-computer interface researchers, as humans are more likely to consider computer-generated figures lifelike when appropriate nonverbal behaviors are displayed in addition to speech. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based approach for the automatic generation of gesture animations for an articulated figure. It combines a formalism for the representation of spatiotemporal gesture features, methods for planning individual gestural animations w.r.t. to form and timing, and formation of arm trajectories. Finally, enhanced methods for rendering animations from motor programs are incorporated in the execution of planned gestures. The approach is targetted to achieve a great variety of gestures as well as a higher degree of lifelikeness in synthetic agents.

Abstract

A fundamental understanding of the anatomy of the human body is a prerequisite for the successful application of a rheumatological expert system designed for use in an outpatient setting. MESICAR incorporates extensive anatomical knowledge that provides the basis for the reasoning methods, which try to explain which structures may be the cause of visible problems of the patient. Associative relations between diseases and manifestations are combined with expressions that define conditions on the manifestations. These conditions are evaluated following the causal relations in the anatomical net. This paper concentrates on the associative and causal reasoning methods of MESICAR and their integration.

95. On the Long-Term Behavior of Grafts on Meshed Skin.

Abstract

In the past four Years, 47 patients in our institution had grafts of meshed skin placed on a variety of defects. Indications, advantages and disadvantages, and postoperative phenomena are presented. Ten cases were a callable for a follow-up study of one to four years. Subjective complaints in the graft sites: vulnerability of the grafts to ordinary trauma: the patient's opinion of the postoperative condition: visibility of the mesh pattern: level: hyper-or hypopigmentation of tile grafted sites: occurrence of hypertrophic scars or keloids: return of sensations (touch, pressure, cold, warmth, and epicritic pain): and thermographic findings in the graft sites were inquired about and judged objectively.
