Abstract

Dear SirA 58-year-old female had symmetric spasticity,hyperreflexia, extensor plantar responses, spasticdysarthria, and pseudobulbar symptoms. The uppermotor neuron involvement had progressed graduallyover more than five years, leading to weakness in allfour limbs and pseudobulbar symptoms, requiring apercutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Denervationpotentials were not detectable on needle electro-myography. Primary lateral sclerosis was diagnosedclinically. Cranial magnetic resonance imagingshowed hyperintensity along the corticospinal tracts(CST) on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery(FLAIR) (Figure 1A) and T2-weighted images,with high signal intensity in the CST on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) (Figure 1B).High signal intensity was evident in the CST onDWI, extending from the precentral gyrus andpassing through the centrum semiovale, periventri-cular white matter, internal capsule, and brainstem.A single case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis inwhich motor tract degeneration was highlightedmildly on DWI of recent lesions has been documen-ted (1). FLAIR images showed that abnormalitiesextended beyond the CST and were therefore notdiagnostic (1), whereas DWI images in our patientshowed abnormalities restricted to the CST. Becausechanges on DWI may be related to T2 abnormalities(‘T2 shine-through’), it would have been helpful ifsome FLAIR images had been obtained at the samelevels as the DWI images, thereby confirming uppermotor neuron disease.Reference

Abstract

The decrease in critical stress for slip with increasing temperature leads to the introduction of permanent strain and thus deteriorates shape memory (SM) characteristics of high-temperature SM alloys. Thermomechanical treatment consisting of cold-rolling and subsequent annealing at various temperatures, was applied for the first time to improve the high-temperature SM characteristics of the Ti50Pd30Ni20 alloy. Then, a systematic study of transformation temperatures, microstructure and associated mechanical behaviour at 443-548K was carried out. The remarkable improvement in SM characteristics was found for the alloy cold-rolled to 24-25% reduction in thickness and annealed at 673K for 3.6 ks. In addition, superelasticity was observed for the first time in this alloy. Finally, the key factor for improvement of high-temperature SM characteristics in the alloy is pointed out.

Abstract

High-temperature tensile tests on Ti50Pd50 - xNix (x = 10, 15, 20) alloys were carried out at 293-858 K. The alloys were cold rolled with a 24.2-26.4% reduction in thickness and then heat treated for solution or recovery treatment. Shape recovery as well as the critical stress for reorientation of martensite variants and/or detwinning were measured as a function of alloy's composition and type of heat treatment. It was found that the critical stress was strongly affected by: (1) Ni content, (2) phase state (martensitic or austenitic) in which recovery treatment was performed. Finally, the key factor for improving shape memory characteristics by thermomechanical treatment in this metallic system was established and the shape memory characteristics of Ti50Pd40Ni10 were improved remarkably by flash heating followed by a recovery heat treatment.

Abstract

Shape memory alloys (S}~) have been of considerable interest the past years as possible functional materials, now actually being used for various practical applications. To the present, the most useful among SMA is the TiNi alloy, because of its unique combination of excellent shape memory (SM) characterestics and sufficient ductility. However, the practical usage of TiNi is limited by temperature to about 373 K, due to the temperature range of thermoelastic martensitic transformation (MT). Presently, there is a strong need to develop high temperature SMA to be used for various actuators in aircraft and automobiles, pipe coupling, etc. Among several metallic systems with a high temperature interval of MT, NiA1 and TiPd alloys seem to be most attractive. In fact, the poor ductility at ambient temperature and the transformation from martensite to NisA13, instead of the reverse transformation upon heating (1), are still the serious problems which restrict the development of SMA based on the first alloy....

Abstract

Optical amplifiers are important devices for future optical fiber transmission and other photonic technologies. Semiconductor laser amplifiers are attractive candidates for these applications because of theirs high gain, compactness, possibility of integration with light source and so on. In comparison with fiber amplifiers such as Er+-doped fibers, the semiconductor laser amplifiers have a disadvantage which is large difference between TE and TM gain. Therefore, to control the TE/TM mode gain is a key item in the development of semiconductor amplifiers. For polarization insensitive amplification in the semiconductor laser amplifier, several approaches have been proposed by geometric designing of active layers. 1-3 In this paper, we describe an approach to the polarization insensitive optical amplifier in which active layer consisted of GaInAsP multiple quantum well structures with biaxially tensile strains within well layers. A group has reported a strained layer quantum well amplifier with tensed barriers. 4 In this work, we investigated the effects of biaxially tensile strain on amplification in the quaternary strained quantum well amplifiers. The polarization insensitive amplification was successfully demonstrated.
