See paper for full list of authors; The Korea Rare Isotope Accelerator, currently referred to as KoRIA, is briefly presented. The KoRIA facility is aimed to enable cutting-edge sciences in a wide range of fields. It consists of a 70 kW isotope separator on-line (ISOL) facility driven by a 70 MeV, 1 mA proton cyclotron and a 400 kW in-flight fragmentation (IFF) facility. The ISOL facility uses a superconducting (SC) linac for post-acceleration of rare isotopes up to about 18 MeV/u, while the SC linac of IFF facility is capable of accelerating uranium beams up to 200 MeV/u, 8 pμA and proton beams up to 600 MeV, 660 μA. Overall features of the KoRIA facility are presented with a focus on the accelerator design.

Salinity power generation using hollow fiber modules was examined using the pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) system between pure water and concentrated brine. Pure water and concentrated brine were supplied from a regional sewage treatment facility and sea water desalination (sea water reverse osmosis [SWRO]) plant. To minimize the effect of the concentration polarization near the membrane surface on the pure water side, the number of open ports in the module was increased from 3 to 4 and that modification was found to be effective because non-permeating pure water, which left the module through fourth port, flushed leaked salt from the brine side through the membrane. Our prototype PRO plant got the maximum output power density, 7.7 W/m2 at a 2.5 MPa hydraulic pressure difference and a 38% permeation of pure water into the brine. To remove the organic foulant in the pure water, a low pressure Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane and coagulation–sedimentation method with ozonation showed good results. Ho...

Sphingomyelin (SM) plays important roles in regulating structure and function of plasma membrane, but how intracellular localization of SM is regulated in neuronal cells is not understood. Here we show that two isoforms of SM synthase (SMS) are differentially expressed in neuronal subtypes and that only SMS2 proteins localize in neurites of hippocampal neurons. Moreover, SMS proteins induce Lysenin-binding SM clusters exclusively in their vicinity although neurons hardly contain such cluster under control condition. These findings indicate three important notions about SM metabolism in neurons. First, the activity of SMS is the rate-limiting step of SM cluster formation. Second, the SM content or clustering can be modulated by SMS activity. Third, SMS1 and SMS2 play distinct roles in regulating local SM clustering. Particularly, SMS2, rather than SMS1, is likely to be the major enzyme that is important for SM synthesis in the long neurites and its tip, the growth cone.

Data on the vector analyzing power A y and the tensor analyzing powers A yy , A xx , and A xz in the reaction $\vec d$ d → 3H p at the deuteron energy of 200 MeV are presented over a full angular range in the c.m. frame. The signs of the tensor analyzing powers for forward and backward scattering are found to be sensitive to the D/S wave ratio in 3H and in the deuteron. High-precision experimental data are compared with the results of theoretical calculations performed on the basis of the multiple-scatteringmodel by using standard wave functions for the three-nucleon bound states and for the deuteron.

With the aim of clarifying roles of the 3NFs in nuclei experimental programs with the polarized deuteron beam at intermediate energies are in progress at RIKEN RI Beam Factory. As the first step, we have measured a complete set of deuteron analyzing powers in deuteron–proton elastic scattering at 250 and 294 MeV/nucleon. The obtained data are compared with the Faddeev calculations based on the modern nucleon–nucleon forces together with the Tucson–Melbourne’99, and UrbanaIX three nucleon forces.

The review of the recent results on spin effects in few nucleon systems obtained at LHEP-JINR are presented. The data on the deuteron analyzing powers in different reactions in the wide energy range demonstrate the sensitivity to the spin structure of the light nuclei. The future plans on the studies with polarized deuterons from new polarized ion source at Nuclotron will be reported.

The prognostic and diagnostic values of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) in ischemic heart disease have already been investigated in many previous studies. Although NT-pro-BNP is affected by many factors, these previous studies did not strictly exclude them. This study included 110 patients who received coronary arteriography between November 2007 and September 2009. Excluded from the study were those patients who had clinical symptoms of heart failure, asynergy by echocardiography or left ventriculography (LVG), atrial fibrillation, prior myocardial infarction, valvular disease, lung disease, anemia or renal dysfunction. We compared the laboratory data, LVG and early transmitral-to-early diastolic annular velocity ratio (E/E (a)) in echocardiography between the group with coronary stenosis and the group without it. NT-pro-BNP and the low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratio (LDL/HDL) independently associated with the presence of coronary artery stenosis (odds ratio of NT-pro-BNP, each 50 pg/ml 2.367, 95% confidence interval 1.302-4.303, p = 0.005). The area under the curve of the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve of NT-pro-BNP, used to predict coronary artery stenosis, was 0.801 (0.719-0.883, p 0.001). According to the ROC curve, the optimal cut-off level for predicting coronary stenosis was 64.3 pg/ml (sensitivity 82.5%, false-positive 34%). NT-pro-BNP is an attractive supplemental marker to predict the presence of coronary artery stenosis in a population that strictly excluded any affecting factors. In the population without factors affecting NT-pro-BNP, a slight increase suggests the presence of ischemic heart disease. The normal criteria for NT-pro-BNP in the patients undergoing coronary angiography may be much lower than the one currently used.

Objectives: To evaluate whether or not to treat diagonal branches interventionally while implanting sirolimus-eluting stents (SES) in left anterior descending artery (LAD). Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures are complicated, especially in the case of a bifurcation lesion. The complicated strategy of PCI may increase the quantity of contrast medium, fluoroscopy time, and the number of devices. Methods: We retrospectively included 35 patients with stable angina who were treated with SES between July 2005 and December 2006. They had 40 LAD/diagonal branch bifurcation lesions. The diagonal branches had a diameter greater than 1.5 mm. We finished the procedure without inflating diagonal branches when their flow showed thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) flow grade 3, even if the ostium of the branches had severe stenosis. Follow-up angiographies were performed 6 months later. The LAD and ostium of diagonal branches were evaluated according to the quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) measurements. Results: The percent diameter stenosis (%DS) of the ostium of diagonal branches was worse post-PCI than at baseline (P = 0.0101). When comparing the follow-up values with the baseline values, there were no significant differences. Additionally, follow-up values were significantly better than the post-PCI values (P = 0.0016). There was no hospitalization for heart failure, angina, or cardiac death. There was only one restenosis in LAD at follow-up, and no diagonal branch became totally occluded or delayed. Conclusions: In the diagonal branches, the minimal lumen diameter decreased and diameter stenosis progressed temporarily; however, both parameters recovered at the time of follow-up.

The data on the vector Ay and tensor Ayy, Axx, Axz analyzing powers for the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] reactions at Ed = 200 and 270 MeV are presented. The data demonstrate large values of analyzing powers and their strong variation versus the scattering angle. The observed negative sign of the tensor analyzing powers for these reactions at small angles clearly demonstrate the sensitivity to the D/S ratio of the 3H and 3He wave functions, respectively. The calculations performed within one-nucleon exchange model with the use of the standard three-nucleon bound state wave functions fail to reproduce the data on the tensor analyzing powers.

The test of the local hidden variable theories involving strongly interacting pairs of massive spin-\(\frac{1}{2}\) hadrons, in a nearly loophole-free experimental setting is reported. The spin correlation function is deduced to be Cexp(π/4) = −0.73 ± 0.08. This result is in agreement with non-local quantum mechanical prediction and it violates the Bell’s inequality of CBell(π/4) ≥ −0.5 at a confidence level of 99.3%.

Recent results on the spin effects in deuteron inclusive breakup and deuteron-proton elastic scattering obtained at the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energies at JINR are reported. The experimental data have been obtained with the use of a high-energy polarized deuteron beam at the Synchrophasotron-Nuclotron Accelerator Complex. The covered energy range corresponds to the short internucleonic distances where the relativistic effects and non-nucleonic degrees of freedom can play a significant role.

The data on the vector A y and tensor A yy , A xx , A xz analyzing powers for the $$ \vec d $$ d → 3H p reaction have been obtained at the energy of the initial deuteron of 200MeV in the angular range of 0–95 degrees in the c.m.s. The calculations performed within one-nucleon exchange model with the use of the standard three-nucleon bound state wave functions fail to reproduce the data on the tensor analyzing powers.

The high-resolution SHARAQ spectrometer is now under construction at RI Beam Factory (RIBF) of RIKEN. The spectrometer will be used in nuclear physics experiments in combination with a variety of radioactive isotope (RI) beams. It is designed to achieve a high momentum resolution of δp/p = 1/14,700 and a high angular resolution of δθ ∼ 1 mrad. Details of the ion-optical design and the newly-constructed magnets making up the spectrometer are described.

The high resolution beam line for the SHARAQ spectrometer was designed to satisfy the lateral and angular dispersion matching conditions based on the precise ion optical calculation using the measured magnetic field maps of the beam line magnets. The higher order aberration due to the large emittance of the secondary RI-beams was corrected by employing the three octupole magnets. A Monte Carlo calculation was carried out to examine the beam profile on the SHARAQ target, and it was found that the octupole magnets actually correct the higher order aberration.

The investigation of the spin structure of d, 3H, and 3He has been performed at the RIKEN acceleration research facility and VBLHE. Vector A y and tensor A yy , A xx , A xz analyzing powers for $$ \vec d $$ d → 3Hen and $$ \vec d $$ d → 3Hp are presented at 270 MeV. Themirror channels (3Hen and 3Hp) are comparedto each other in order to find possible manifestation of charge-symmetry breaking. The preliminary results on the polarization observables for $$ \vec d $$ d → 3Hp at 200MeV are also presented. The obtained data are compared with one-nucleon-exchange calculations.As a byproduct, $$ \vec d $$ d → pX and $$ \vec d $$ 12C → pX breakup reactions are investigated at 140, 200, and 270MeV. The experimental data on $$ \vec d $$ p elastic scattering were obtained at 270, 880, and 2000 MeV at the Nuclotron. The polarization of the deuteron beam was measured at 270 MeV at the internal target station. The preliminary data on the vector A y and tensor A yy , A xx analyzing powers for the $$ \vec d $$ p elastic scattering at 880 MeV are presented. The calculations on A y , A yy , and A xx analyzing powers for the $$ \vec d $$ p elastic scattering at 880 MeV were performed in the framework of the multiple-scattering model.

The preliminary results on the angular distributions of the vector A y and tensor A yy , A xx analyzing powers in dp elastic scattering at T d = 880MeV are presented. A region of center-of-mass system angles from 60° to 140° is covered. The experimental data are compared with the preliminary calculations obtained within framework of different theoretical approaches. The experiment has been performed at the Internal Target Station at Nuclotron within the framework of the program on the study of light nuclei spin structure proposed at JINR (Russia) and RIBF (Japan).

The preliminary results on the tensor T20 analyzing power for the 12C(\( \vec d \),p)13C* reaction with the excitation of 13C levels and the d(\( \vec d \),p)X reaction at the energies Td = 140, 200 and 270 MeV at the emission angle Θcm = 0° are presented. The data on the tensor Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers for the 12C(\( \vec d \),p)13C* reaction at the energy Td = 270 MeV in the angular range from 4° to 18° in the laboratory are also obtained.

A facility for studying (n,p) reactions at neutron kinetic energies of 140 ≲ T n ≲ 300 MeV has been constructed by using the existing Large Acceptance Spectrometer at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka University. A neutron beam produced by the 7Li(p,n) reaction hits the (n,p) targets located in a segmented target system, which allows one to use a relatively thick target in total ( ∼ 0.5 g / cm 2 ) with a moderate energy resolution of ∼ 1 MeV . The facility enables one to obtain spectra at 300 MeV up to an excitation energy of 70 MeV with a single setting of the spectrometer. This (n,p) facility has a large effective solid angle of 11 msr for an effective target size of 30 W × 20 H mm 2 .

Recent experimental progress of the three-nucleon force study is shown placing an emphasis on the nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering at intermediate energies.

We have constructed a polarized proton solid target system for radioactive nuclear beam experiments at the Center for Nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo. The proton polarization is based on an electron population difference in a photo-excited triplet state of pentacene molecule. The target system was completed in 2003 and applied to a RI beam experiment in 2003 and 2005 by using the projectile fragment separator, RIPS at RIKEN. The maximum polarization reached 20% under the condition of T=100 K and B=0.09 T. Overview of the polarized target and its application in physics experiments at RIPS and RIBF of RIKEN are presented.

The neutron polarimeter SMART-NPOL has been constructed at the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility for measuring polarization correlations of proton–neutron systems. The SMART-NPOL system consists of 12 parallel neutron counter planes of two dimensionally position-sensitive plastic scintillators with a size of 60 × 60 × 3.0 cm 3 . Polarimetry measurements were made using the analyzing power of the H 1 ( n ⇒ , n ) H 1 reaction occurring in the plastic scintillators. The effective analyzing power of SMART-NPOL was measured with polarized neutrons from the zero-degree Li 6 ( d ⇒ , n ⇒ ) reaction with an incident deuteron energy of 135 MeV / A . The effective analyzing power thus obtained was 0.26 ± 0 . 01 stat ± 0 . 03 syst and the double scattering efficiency was 1.1 × 10 - 3 .

Recent experimental progress of the three-nucleon force study using the nucleon-deuteron system at intermediate energies is reviewed with personal taste.

Measurements of deuteron–proton breakup reactions at 135 MeV/A have been made at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility, focusing on the specific coplanar configurations. The obtained results are compared with the Faddeev calculations based on the modern nucleon–nucleon forces together with the Tucson-Melbourne99, and UrbanaIX three nucleon forces.

The cross sections and spin observables of the pd elastic scattering have been measured at 392 MeV. The results are compared with the prediction of Faddeev calculations with and without including a three nucleon force.

The differential cross sections and the vector analyzing powers for the nd elastic scattering at E n = 250 MeV have been measured for the study of the three-nucleon force (3NF) effects in the Coulomb-free system. To cover a wide angular region, the experiments were performed by using two different methods at the ( n , p ) facility and at the NTOF facility which constructed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). The results were compared with theoretical predictions of the Faddeev calculations based on the modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) forces with the three-nucleon force (3NF). The inclusion of 3NFs leads to a good description of the cross section except for the backward angles. The results were also compared with the theoretical predictions with relativistic corrections. The direct data-to-data comparison of the cross sections of the nd and pd was performed.

Extensive studies of three-nucleon force (3NF) effects in elastic proton-deuteron scattering have been performed at KVI and elsewhere in the past. In the present work, we explored 3NF effects in the break-up scattering process by performing high precision measurement of vector analyzing powers and differential cross sections using a 190 MeV polarized-proton beam on a liquid deuterium target. The experiment was performed by exploiting a new detector called Big Instrument for Nuclear-polarization Analysis, BINA. Its unique design enables coverage of almost the complete reaction phase space. Preliminary differential cross sections and vector analyzing powers are presented and results are compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon calculations.

The energy spectrum of the 2 H(d,pn) reaction at 0° at 270 MeV was obtained at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The spectrum in the kinematical region where the resulting pn pair has the relative energy smaller than ∼2 MeV was analyzed by plane-wave impulse approximation calculations assuming the configurations of final state interaction with s-wave.

The 116Cd(p,n) experiment at 300 MeV has been performed for deducing the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strengths B(GT−) in 116In. For the transition to the ground state, the B(GT−) value of 0.26 ± 0.02 is obtained. From this B(GT−) value and the B(GT+) value by a beta-decay experiment, the contribution of the intermediate ground state of 116In to the nuclear matrix element is deduced to be 0.070 ± 0.003. The B(GT−) value obtained herein is a factor of 8 less than that obtained from a previous (3He,t) measurement. This discrepancy, as well as differences in the distribution of low energy GT strength, and the width and peak energy of the GT giant resonance may be explained if the target used in the (3He,t) measurement is a Cd target with natural abundance.

Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of 90 Zr are studied by the 90 Zr(p, n) and 90 Zr(n, p) reactions at 300 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique is employed to obtain the SD strength distributions in the cross section spectra. A model-independent SD sum rule value is obtained: 148 ± 12 fm 2 . The SD strength distributions and the sum rule value are compared with the calculated results of the self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock + Tamm-Dancoff approximation with the coupling to the continuum. The neutron skin thickness of 90 Zr is determined to be 0.07 ± 0.04 fm from the SD sum rule.

High-precision vector and tensor analyzing powers of elastic deuteron-proton (d + p) scattering have been measured at intermediate energies to investigate effects of three-nucleon forces. Angular distributions in the range of 70-120 degrees in the center-of mass frame for incident-deuteron energies Ed (lab)(d) = 130 and 180 MeV were obtained using the RIKEN facility. The beam polarization was unambiguously determined by measuring the C-12(d,alpha)B-10(2(+)) reaction at 0 degrees. Results of the measurements are compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon calculations. The present modeling of nucleon-nucleon forces and its extension to the three-nucleon system is not sufficient to describe the high-precision data consistently and requires, therefore; further investigation.

The 12 C( d ⇒ , α ) 10 B * [2 + ] reaction at 0 ∘ has been proposed as a new tool to calibrate the deuteron beam polarization at intermediate energies. The absolute values of the deuteron polarizations were extracted for the first time by using this reaction at 270 and 140 MeV deuteron energies. The analyzing powers for the d ⇒ –p elastic scattering, which is used as a secondary reaction of a polarimetry, were determined by the new method.

We report measurements of the cross section and a complete set of polarization observables for the Si 28 ( p → , n → ) P 28 ( 6 − ) reaction at a bombarding energy of 198 MeV. The data are compared with distorted wave impulse approximation calculations employing response functions normalized to inelastic electron scattering. The spin-longitudinal polarized cross section I D q is slightly over-predicted by the calculations, while the normal spin-transverse polarized cross section I D n is significantly under-predicted. The calculated in-plane spin-transverse I D p and spin-scalar I D 0 polarized cross sections agree well with the experimental data. These results are consistent with those for Si 28 ( p → , p → ′ ) Si 28 ( 6 − , T = 1 ) scattering at the same energy, and thus it is concluded that isospin-mixing effects are not responsible for the discrepancy between theory and experiment in the ( p → , p → ′ ) case. Energy half-off-shell effects as medium effects on the effective nucleon–nucleon interaction are also investigated and found to be too small to be responsible for the discrepancy.

Forward Osmosis (FO) is recently paied attention to preprocessing of the Reverse Osmosis (RO). It can reduce the input power of RO plant. It is required to reduce the salt concentration at outlet and increase the permeation flow rate. In this paper, the characteristics of the fresh water flow and permeation are studied for the hollow fiber membrane module used in FO system. It is cleared that the disappearance of fresh water and the concentration polarization in hollow fiber largely influence to the reduction of permeation flow rate in the case of the low fresh water flow rate. Concentration of fresh water and the leakage of salt influence to the reduction of permeation flow rate in the case of high fresh water flow rate.Copyright © 2015 by JSME

A new high-energy beam polarimeter is proposed for Nuclotron, which uses the Internal Target Station (ITS). This polarimeter based on a measurement of asymmetry for the d–p elastic scattering will allow one to measure simultaneously both vector and tensor components of deuteron beam polarization. For this purpose an analyzing powers measurement for the d–p elastic scattering at energies T d = 0.88–2 GeV is proposed. The precise measurements of the deuteron analyzing powers over the energy range T d = 300–2000 MeV can give an irreplaceable clue to the study of the spin dependence of three nucleon forces.

RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility data on the tensor analyzing power T{sub 20} of the dd {sup {yields}} {sup 3}Hen and dd {sup {yields}} {sup 3}Hp reactions at zero angle for deuteron kinetic energies of 140, 200, and 270 MeV are reported. The observed positive sign of T{sub 20} clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D/S-wave ratio in the {sup 3}He and {sup 3}H wave functions in the energy range of the experiment. Data on T{sub 20} for the {sup 3}Hen channel are in agreement with those for the {sup 3}Hp channel within the experimental errors.

Recent progress in the study of spin–isospin responses by charge exchange ( p , n ) and ( n , p ) reactions at 300–500 MeV is reviewed with special emphases on quenching of the total Gamow–Teller (GT) strength at a momentum transfer q = 0 fm − 1 and enhancement of the spin-longitudinal (pionic) response in quasielastic scattering (QES) at q ≈ 1.7 fm − 1 . This progress has been made possible by the development of experimental techniques such as polarization transfer measurements for ( p , n ) reactions and quasi-monochromatic neutron beam production for ( n , p ) measurements. Currently operating ( p → , n → ) and ( n , p ) facilities are described. We present a detailed method of multipole decomposition analysis to extract GT strengths from the continuum spectra of the Zr 90 ( p , n ) and ( n , p ) reactions. From the obtained GT strength distributions, a quenching factor Q with respect to the GT sum rule value of 3 ( N − Z ) can be derived. We also describe a method to obtain the polarized cross section I D i for the QES region from a complete set of polarization transfer coefficients D i j for the ( p → , n → ) reaction. The peak position of the GT giant resonance, the quenching factor Q , and the spin-longitudinal cross section I D q are used to estimate the values for the Landau–Migdal parameters, giving g NN ′ = 0.6 – 0.7 and g N Δ ′ = 0.2 – 0.4 , which are appropriate for the wide range q ≈ 0 – 1.7 fm − 1 . This small g N Δ ′ value leads to a large increase in pionic attraction in a large momentum transfer region. One possible consequence of this is a reduction of the critical density of pion condensation, which is briefly touched upon. Another consequence is precursor phenomena of pion condensation in the normal nuclear density which appear in the enhancement of I D q . Basic theoretical elements, including the Δ isobar degrees of freedom for analyzing experimental data, are described. Treatments of the continuum in reactions as well as in nuclear structure are emphasized. The framework of the distorted wave impulse approximation as well as two-step processes using the response functions in the continuum random phase approximation is described.

The ^Mg (α, ^3He) ^Mg reaction leading to seven 1^+ states, proposed previously by proton scattering at 201 MeV and by the (α, ^3He) reaction at 50MeV, was measured at E_α=80.9MeV. The cross sections obtained were analyzed within the framework of the exact-finite-range distorted wave Born approximation. The spectroscopic factors for a d_ transfer to 1^+ states were compared with those predicted by sd shell model calculations. Two of the 1^+ states were found to have a simple (d_d_) structure consistent with the shell model picture. Others with too large d_ transfer strength were ascribed owing to a mixture of other nearby states with J^π values other than 1^+ in referring to a recent compilation.

A new orbit correction method, called the eigenvector method with constraints (EVC), is proposed and formulated to unite global and local orbit corrections for ring accelerators, especially synchrotron radiation(SR) sources. The EVC can exactly correct the beam positions at arbitrarily selected ring positions such as light source points, simultaneously reducing closed orbit distortion (COD) around the whole ring. Computer simulations clearly demonstrate these features of the EVC for both cases of the Super-SOR light source and the Advanced Light Source (ALS) that have typical structures of high-brilliance SR sources. In addition, the effects of errors in beam position monitor (BPM) reading and steering magnet setting on the orbit correction are analytically expressed and also compared with the computer simulations. Simulation results show that the EVC is very effective and useful for orbit correction and beam position stabilization in SR sources.

A medial axis is a connected planar graph that roughly represents the shape of a figure on a two-dimensional plane. Numerous construction methods have already been proposed. However, the conventional construction methods had problems related to efficiency and stability since smoothing had to be repeatedly performed to prevent the effects of noise, or complex processing was required to preserve continuity. In this paper, the authors propose a simple construction method that can prevent the effects of noise without smoothing. The proposed construction method generates a Voronoi diagram for the figure and extracts Voronoi edges that are suitable for medial axes according to certain rules. A proton polarizing system for use in scattering experiments with radioactive isotope beams is described. Protons in a naphthalene crystal doped with pentacene are polarized in a magnetic field of 0.3 T at 100 K by transferring a large population difference among the photo-excited triplet states of pentacene to the hydrogen nuclei. An Ar-ion laser, which demands minimal maintenance during scattering experiments, is employed to excite the pentacene molecules. A proton polarization of 37% is obtained.

We have constructed a new type of spin polarized solid proton target which can be operated under a low magnetic field of 0.08T and a high temperature of 100 K. We have measured for the first time the polarization asymmetry of an unstable beam of 6He at an energy of 71 MeV/u. Optical potential analyses have been carried out.

Double differential cross sections between 0-12 degrees were measured for the 90Zr(n,p) reaction at 293 MeV over a wide excitation energy range of 0-70 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique was applied to the present data as well as the previously obtained 90Zr(p,n) data to extract the Gamow-Teller (GT) component from the continuum. The GT quenching factor Q was derived by using the obtained total GT strengths. The result is Q=0.88+/-0.06 not including an overall normalization uncertainty in the GT unit cross section of 16%., Comment: 11 papes, 4 figures, submitted to Physics Letters B (accepted), gzipped tar file, changed contents

The neutron–deuteron ( n d ) elastic scattering differential cross section has been measured at 95 MeV incident neutron energy. The neutron–proton ( n p ) differential cross section has also been measured for normalization purposes. An inclusion of three-nucleon forces gives a considerable improvement in the theoretical description of the nd data in the angular region of the cross-section minimum.

The data on the tensor analyzing power T 20 in the d d → He 3 n and d d → H 3 p reactions obtained at 140–270 and 140–200 MeV of the deuteron kinetic energy, respectively, and at zero degree were measured at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The observed positive sign of T 20 clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D / S wave ratios in the 3 He and 3 H in the energy domain of the measurements. The T 20 data for the 3 He– n and 3 H– p channels are in agreement within experimental accuracy.

A complete set of polarization transfer observables has been measured for the 90 Zr( p , n ) reaction at T p = 295 MeV and θ lab = 0°. The measurement can yield the total spin transfer Σ(0°) which is independent of nuclear reaction mechanisms such as the effective nucleon–nucleon interaction or distortions. The deduced Σ(0°) values indicate the strong spin-flip characteristics of the continuum up to 50 MeV excitation. A predominance of unnatural-parity transitions in the continuum is also observed from polarization transfer observables.
