A description and illustrations of Monohelea maya, new species, based on male and female characteristics are provided. The specimens were collected in the special biosphere Reserves of Ria Lagartos and Ria Celestun, Yucatan State, Mexico.

Internal tandem duplication (ITD) of the fms-related tyrosine kinase-3 (FLT3) gene occurs in 30% of acute myeloid leukemias (AMLs) and confers a poor prognosis. Thirteen relapsed or chemo-refractory FI.T3-ITD+ AML patients were treated with sorafenib (200-400 mg twice daily). Twelve patients showed clearance or near clearance of bone marrow myeloblasts after 27 (range 21-84) days with evidence of differentiation of leukemia cells. The sorafenib response was lost in most patients after 72 (range 54-287) days but the FLT3 and downstream effectors remained suppressed. Gene expression profiling showed that leukemia cells that have become sorafenib resistant expressed several genes including ALDH1A1, JAK3, and MMP15, whose functions were unknown in AML. Nonobese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency mice transplanted with leukemia cells from patients before and during sorafenib resistance recapitulated the clinical results. Both ITD and tyrosine kinase domain mutations at D835 were identified in leukemia initiating cells (LICs) from samples before sorafenib treatment. LICs bearing the D835 mutant have expanded during sorafenib treatment and dominated during the subsequent clinical resistance. These results suggest that sorafenib have selected more aggressive sorafenib-resistant subclones carrying both FL73-ITD and D835 mutations, and might provide important leads to further improvement of treatment outcome with FLT3 inhibitors. The technique used at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) to measure the concentration of 222Rn in water is described. Water from the SNO detector is passed through a vacuum degasser (in the light water system) or a membrane contact degasser (in the heavy water system) where dissolved gases, including radon, are liberated. The degasser is connected to a vacuum system which collects the radon on a cold trap and removes most other gases, such as water vapor and N2. After roughly 0.5 tonnes of H2O or 6 tonnes of D2O have been sampled, the accumulated radon is transferred to a Lucas cell. The cell is mounted on a photomultiplier tube which detects the α-particles from the decay of 222Rn and its progeny. The overall degassing and concentration efficiency is about 38% and the single-α counting efficiency is approximately 75%. The sensitivity of the radon assay system for D2O is equivalent to ∼3×10-15 g U/g water. The radon concentration in both the H2O and D2O is sufficiently low that the rate of background events from U-chain elements is a small fraction of the interaction rate of solar neutrinos by the neutral current reaction. Hidradenitis suppurativa, also referred to as inverse acne , manifests as a persistent inflammatory skin disorder characterized by lesions such as deep nodules, abscesses, sinus tracts, and fibrotic scars. These manifestations predominantly occur in skin folds and intertriginous areas, notably in the axillary, inguinal, perianal, perineal, and inframammary regions. Due to similarities with other conditions in its initial stages, accurate diagnosis of hidradenitis suppurativa is often delayed, sometimes spanning several years. Diagnosis relies on identifying specific morphologic features (such as deep, inflamed, and painful nodules; sinus tracts; and scars), considering the affected sites (skin folds and areas with apocrine glands), and recognizing the chronic nature of the condition (persistent course with periods of exacerbation and remission). There are no definitive biologic or pathologic diagnostic tests, and biopsy of the affected area is not necessary. Treatment varies based on severity and may include topical and systemic antibiotics, hormonal therapy, immunomodulators, and surgery. Due to associated pain, increased site sensitivity, secretion drainage, odor, and scarring, this condition can have a negative psychosocial impact. Imaging studies, including high-frequency US and MRI with subsequent three-dimensional reconstruction, serve as valuable tools for precise staging, monitoring disease activity, and preoperative assessment. Currently, high-frequency US stands as the preferred method, incorporating sonographic classifications, while MRI and thee-dimensional imaging represent an emerging and promising approach. Objective: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the vascularization pattern of uterine myoma (UM) by ultrasonography using Superb Microvascular Imaging (SMI) and tissue stiffness elastography., Method: A prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out between March 2020 and December 2022 among women with clinical and ultrasound diagnosis of UM who would subsequently undergo radiofrequency ablation. Ultrasound examination was performed using both transvaginal and transabdominal routes. UM vascularization pattern was assessed by power Doppler (PD) and SMI, while elastographic pattern was assessed by shear wave (SWE) and strain (STE). FIGO classification, location, and measurement of the largest UM were also described., Results: A total of 21 women diagnosed with UM were evaluated. There was a predominance of nulliparous women and 20 women (95.2%) reported desire for pregnancy. Of the 18 women with abnormal uterine bleeding, 15 (83.3%) had abdominal cramping. As far as previous treatment, 7 (33.3%) had undergone myomectomy for other UM. The mean uterine and UM volumes were 341.9 cm 3 (90-730) and 126.52 cm 3 (6.0-430), respectively. There was a predominance of hypoechogenic lesions (90.5%). There was also preponderance of UM in the FIGO 2-5 classification (n = 9; 42.9%). Vascularization patter was mostly moderate (score 2) in 9 cases (42.9%). The majority of UM were considered to have intermediate stiffness (n = 10; 47.6%)., Conclusion: The majority of UM showed vascularization and moderate stiffness. Fetal cervical tumors are a life-threatening condition if proper diagnosis and perinatal care are inadequate. The most common causes of fetal cervical masses are teratomas and lymphangiomas. Less common tumors may obstruct the fetal airway due to cervical compression. In this case report, a fetus with a cervical sarcoma was evaluated by ultrasound and MRI. The prenatal imaging characteristics of the tumor were described, virtual navigation of the fetal airway was performed and compared with fetal bronchoscopy to evaluate the consistency of the tumor. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the available scientific literature on ultrasound-detected fetal liver changes in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and to explore the potential of these markers to inform clinical management and improve outcomes. A total of four articles investigating fetal liver changes in GDM pregnancies were selected. The studies varied in methodology, gestational age studied, and diagnostic criteria for GDM. Fetal liver indices, such as fetal liver length and fetal liver volume, emerged as potential markers for identifying GDM and predicting adverse outcomes. Studies suggest an association between fetal liver changes and GDM, with implications for both maternal glycemic control and fetal metabolic adaptation. Background: The aim of this extended review of multicenter case series is to describe the prenatal ultrasound features and pathogenetic mechanisms underlying placental and umbilical cord anomalies and their relationship with adverse perinatal outcome. From an educational point of view, the case series has been divided in three parts; Part 1 is dedicated to placental abnormalities., Methods: Multicenter case series of women undergoing routine and extended prenatal ultrasound and perinatal obstetric care., Results: Prenatal ultrasound findings, perinatal care, and pathology documentation in cases of placental pathology are presented., Conclusions: Our case series review and that of the medical literature confirms the ethiopathogenetic role and involvement of placenta abnormalities in a wide variety of obstetrics diseases that may jeopardize the fetal well-being. Clinical manifestations of dermatological and musculoskeletal conditions can sometimes overlap, leading to confusion in diagnosis. Patients with nail and skin infections may undergo imaging examinations with suspicions of muscle, tendon, or joint injuries. Dermatological infections often involve soft tissues and musculoskeletal structures, and their etiology can range from fungi, bacteria, viruses, to protozoa. Relying solely on physical examination may not be sufficient for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, necessitating the use of complementary imaging exams. The objective of this paper is to present and discuss imaging findings of the main infectious conditions affecting the nail apparatus and skin. We reported a case of heterotopic twin pregnancy in a unicornuate uterus with a non-communicating rudimentary horn with survival of both fetuses. The diagnosis was made late at 28 weeks of gestation, with suspicion raised by ultrasound and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). During hospitalization, obstetric ultrasound with color Doppler was performed every 2 days to assess fetal well-being and myometrial thickness, which was determined by measurements of the uterine wall at the accessory horn. Elective cesarean section was performed at 33 + 5 weeks of gestation. Delivery started with the fetus in the rudimentary horn, with subsequent extraction of the fetus in the unicornate uterus. The complete absence of the nose, arhinia, is a malformation most often associated with severe brain malformations. However, arhinia can be isolated, but only a few cases have been described. The prenatal diagnosis of isolated arhinia is also rarely described, with only three cases describing their follow-up, mostly in the first months of life. In this case report, we describe the prenatal diagnosis of isolated arhinia and the long-term follow-up of 8 years with normal psychological and cognitive development. Objectives : We sought to identify in which clinical scenarios 3D printed models are used to plan for fetal surgeries as well as the main purpose and the imaging method utilized for the models. In addition, we describe benefits and shortcomings of the models, as well as potential future improvements. Methods : In this scoping review, data were collected retrospectively from scientific databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Web of Science platform) and screened by title, abstract, and full text against strict criteria. The inclusion criteria required the study be performed on a live fetus and involve 3D models used for fetal surgery. The models must have been designed from diagnostic imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, or ultrasound. The articles considered include clinical trials, review articles, cohort studies, case series, case reports, and conference abstracts. Results : Of the initial 742 articles collected, six met the inclusion criteria. Spina bifida and EXIT procedures were the most frequent use cases that inspired surgeons to print models for surgical planning. The ability to view patient-specific anatomy in a 3D handheld model was often touted as providing a great benefit to the surgical team's ability to anticipate intraoperative challenges. Conclusions : Three-dimensional printing models have been applied to plan for fetal surgeries, more specifically, for EXIT procedures and fetoscopic surgical repair of spina bifida. The potential benefits of 3D printing in fetal surgery are enormous.

Coxsackievirus group B (CVB), a member of the Picornaviridae family and enterovirus genus, poses risks during pregnancy due to its potential to cause severe fetal and neonatal infections. Transmission primarily occurs through fecal-oral routes, with infections peaking mostly in warmer months. Vertical transmission to the fetus can lead to conditions such as myocarditis, encephalitis, and systemic neonatal disease, presenting clinically as severe myocardial syndromes and neurological deficits. Diagnostic challenges include detecting asymptomatic maternal infections and conducting in utero assessments using advanced techniques like RT-PCR from amniotic fluid samples. Morbidity and mortality associated with congenital CVB infections are notable, linked to preterm delivery, fetal growth restriction, and potential long-term health impacts such as type 1 diabetes mellitus and structural cardiac anomalies. Current treatments are limited to supportive care, with emerging therapies showing promise but requiring further study for efficacy in utero. Preventive measures focus on infection control and hygiene to mitigate transmission risks, which are crucial especially during pregnancy. Future research should aim to fill knowledge gaps in epidemiology, improve diagnostic capabilities, and develop targeted interventions to enhance maternal and fetal outcomes.

Introduction: 3D biomodels represent a cutting-edge advancement in medical imaging technology. The incorporation of 3D technologies in dermatology through the acquisition of onychological images, 3D reconstruction, and development of customized equipment to assist in surgeries demonstrated reduction in operating times and improved surgical outcomes. Additionally, the use of 3D printing in surgical simulation provided a safe environment for training and education. This article explores the application of 3D biomodels in dermatology, focusing on three clinical cases involving nail tumors., Case Presentation: In case 1, a glomus tumor was visualized in 3D, guiding the creation of a personalized surgical device. The minimally invasive surgery, facilitated by the biomodel, resulted in successful tumor removal. Case 2, featuring a subungual keratoacanthoma, utilized 3D biomodels for conservative surgery planning, anatomical comprehension, and patient communication. This study presents the initial results of a pilot project using the Elucis Virtual Reality (VR) platform for fetal heart segmentation. Twelve fetal heart cases, ranging in gestational age from 24 to 30 weeks, including various cardiac conditions, were reconstructed using 3D models facilitated by the Elucis platform's integration of automated algorithms and manual adjustments. The models, which were evaluated by four experts in virtual and 3D printed formats, were of high quality and offered improved visuospatial visualization and detailed anatomical insights. This research highlights the potential of VR technology to improve prenatal diagnosis and planning for complex cardiac conditions, suggesting significant implications for continuing medical education and clinical practice in fetal cardiology., (© 2024. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide additional information in cases of cesarean scar pregnancy beyond the first trimester. MRI and 3D reconstructions can demonstrate the relationships between the uterus, cervix, bladder, and placenta, improving the spatial perspective of the pelvic anatomy in cases requiring surgical management. Viral infections in low-income countries such as Brazil pose a significant challenge for medical authorities, with epidemics such as Zika virus infection having lasting effects. The increase in microcephaly among newborns has prompted investigations into the association between Zika virus and this congenital syndrome. The severity and prevalence of microcephaly led to the declaration of national and international emergencies. Extensive research has been conducted to understand the teratogenic effects of Zika virus, particularly its impact on neural progenitor cells in the fetal brain. Various pre- and postnatal imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and postnatal computed tomography (CT), have played crucial roles in diagnosing and monitoring malformations linked to congenital Zika virus infection in the central nervous system (CNS). These modalities can detect brain parenchymal abnormalities, calcifications, cerebral atrophy, and callosal anomalies. Additionally, three-dimensional ultrasound and fetal MRI provide detailed anatomical images, while CT can identify calcifications that are not easily detected by other methods. Despite advancements in imaging, there are still unanswered questions and ongoing challenges in comprehending the long-term effects and developmental impairments in children affected by Zika virus. Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a cyanotic congenital heart disease characterized by ventriculoarterial discordance and atrioventricular concordance with the great arteries in a parallel relationship. Background: The term placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is commonly used to describe abnormal trophoblastic invasion of the myometrium, serosa, or organs adjacent to the uterus. It is of great obstetric importance because of its high morbidity, risk of hemorrhage, admission to the intensive care unit, risk of hysterectomy, and high risk of iatrogenic pelvic lesions and even death. These risks are minimized when prenatal diagnosis is performed. Background: On the American continent, Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. comprises two species: Rhipicephalus linnaei and R. sanguineus s.s. Each species has been identified as a potential vector of at least one of five species of pathogenic bacteria of the genus Rickettsia. In particular, Rickettsia massiliae is one of three species with the greatest importance in public health at the continental level. In Mexico, this species is reported exclusively in the Nearctic states of Baja California and Chihuahua., Aim: For this reason, the aim of this work was to provide new records of R. massiliae for the centre of the country derived from active acarological surveillance., Materials and Methods: During the period of February-October 2019, 29 dogs from six municipalities in the state of Morelos were sampled. Hosts were visually inspected, and ticks were recovered and identified morphologically and molecularly by amplification of the 16S rDNA gene. Subsequently, five genes from members of the genus Rickettsia were amplified and sequenced., Results: A total of 229 (117♀, 98♂ and 14 N) ticks identified as R. linnaei were recovered, two of which were positive for R. massiliae strains related to those recovered from Argentina and the United States., Conclusions: This work provides the second record of R. massiliae infecting R. linnaei in Mexico and the Americas, increasing the geographic distribution of this Rickettsia species in the Neotropical region, and providing information on the possible role of R. linnaei as a potential vector of this microorganism., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH. Given the recently proposed three-filament theory of muscle contraction, we present a low-cost physical sarcomere model aimed at illustrating the role of titin in the production of active force in skeletal muscle. With inexpensive materials, it is possible to illustrate actin-myosin cross-bridge interactions between the thick and thin filaments and demonstrate the two different mechanisms by which titin is thought to contribute to active and passive muscle force. Specifically, the model illustrates how titin, a molecule with springlike properties, may increase its stiffness by binding free calcium upon muscle activation and reducing its extensible length by attaching itself to actin, resulting in the greater force-generating capacity after an active than a passive elongation that has been observed experimentally. The model is simple to build and manipulate, and demonstration to high school students was shown to result in positive perception and improved understanding of the otherwise complex titin-related mechanisms of force production in skeletal and cardiac muscles. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our physical sarcomere model illustrates not only the classic view of muscle contraction, the sliding filament and cross-bridge theories, but also the newly discovered role of titin in force regulation, called the three-filament theory. The model allows for easy visualization of the role of titin in muscle contraction and aids in explaining complex muscle properties that are not captured by the traditional cross-bridge theory.

Background: Continuing education is a requirement for emergency medical services practitioners in Ohio, and simulation-based learning has been effective for this purpose. Limitations to providing simulation for emergency medical services practitioners include a lack of simulation resources or equipment and a lack of trained simulationists to adequately use existing equipment, such as high-fidelity manikins. Here, we sought to provide simulation-based learning in the ambulance bays of our local hospitals to meet these needs., Methods: The OhioHealth simulation team, in conjunction with OhioHealth Emergency Medical Services, conducted simulation-based education sessions in ambulance bays scheduled in 2-h blocks for 3 consecutive days at 3 different hospitals in Columbus, Ohio. The outcomes of the education sessions were evaluated based on the ability to meet the educational objectives and the suitability of the environment for learning. In total, 171 learners completed educational sessions and evaluations., Results: Modified Likert scale surveys were completed by learners to assess their confidence in the learning objectives. For each session, the learners were able to meet the determined learning objectives after the education. Regarding the feasibility of using ambulance bays for education, 90% of learners (155/171) responded that they "Agree" or "Strongly Agree" that the environment was conducive to learning., Conclusion: Using care site ambulance bays with simulation staff and content experts, we were able to effectively deliver simulation-based education. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common congenital infection worldwide, affecting between 0.7% and 1% of all live births. Approximately 11% of infected newborns are symptomatic at birth, and between 30% and 40% of these are at risk of developing long-term neurological sequelae. Until recently, the lack of an effective treatment did not justify universal testing of pregnant women. In recent years, however, valacyclovir at a dose of 8 g/day has been shown to be effective in preventing vertical transmission, and ganciclovir has been shown to be effective in preventing long-term sequelae in the treatment of symptomatic neonates. The aim of this article is to review congenital CMV infection, from its epidemiology to its treatment, using the most recent studies in the literature, and to help in the decision to modify protocols for universal testing of pregnant women according to the possibilities of each locality.

The purpose of this article is to describe the evaluation of a variety of congenital heart diseases (CHDs) using three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound with different software, such as Cristal Vue, Realistic Vue, LumiFlow, and Spatiotemporal Image Correlation (STIC), with HDlive and HDlive Flow Silhouette modes. These technologies provide realistic images of the fetal heart and cardiac vessels using a fixed virtual light source that allows the operator to freely select a better light source position to enhance the cardiovascular anatomical details. In addition, Fetal Intelligent Navigation Echocardiography (FINE) technology, also known as "5D Heart" or "5D", is a technology that enables the automatic reconstruction of the nine standard fetal echocardiographic views and can alert non-specialists to suspected CHD. Through the use of artificial intelligence, an ultrasound machine is able to perform automatic anatomical and functional measurements. In addition, hese technologies enable the reconstruction of fetal cardiac structures in realistic images, improving the depth perception and resolution of anatomic cardiac details and blood vessels compared to those of standard two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound.

We investigate the effects of non-magnetic disorder in a hybridized two-dimensional two-orbital s-wave superconductor (SC) model. The situation in which electronic orbitals overlap such that the hybridizationVi,jamong them is antisymmetric, under inversion symmetry, was taken into account. The on-site disorder is given by a random impurity potential W . We find that while the random disorder acts to the detriment of superconductivity, hybridization proceeds to favor it. Accordingly, hybridization plays an important role in two-orbital models of superconductivity, in order to hold the long-range order against the increase of disorder. This makes the present model eligible to describe real materials, since the hybridization may be induced by pressure or doping. In addition, the regime from moderate to strong disorder reveals that the system is broken into SC islands with correlated local order parameters. The diagnosis depends on the presence of at least three of these structural abnormalities. Results: The most common feature is a vertebral anomaly, found in 60-80% of cases. Tracheo-esophageal fistula is seen in 50-80% of cases and renal malformations in 30% of patients. Limb defects including thumb aplasia/hypoplasia, polydactyly, and radial agenesis/hypoplasia are present in 40-50% of cases. Anorectal defects, like imperforate anus/anal atresia, are challenging to detect prenatally. Conclusion: The diagnosis of VACTERL association mostly relies on imaging techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance. Differential diagnosis should exclude similar diseases such as CHARGE and Townes-Brocks syndromes and Fanconi anemia. New insights into genetic etiology have led to recommendations of chromosomal breakage investigation for optimal diagnosis and counseling.

Camillemyia prominens Gagné, gen. n. et sp. n., (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae; Cecidomyiinae) is described for a gall midge from Mexico with an extremely elongate neck and proboscis. The external and internal basic composition of the proboscis of Cecidomyiidae, as exemplified by Cecidomyia resinicola Osten Sacken, is reviewed to help understand the structural changes found in Cam. prominens as compared to those of Contarinia prolixa Gagné & Byers, another species with spectacularly modified mouthparts.

Pallister - Hall syndrome is a rare malformation that involves the presence of a suprasellar hamartoma and associated malformations. Prenatal diagnosis is also rare, and few cases have been reported using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 35-year-old G5P2A2 woman at the 35th week of gestation was referred to our service. Fetal MRI showed an isointense image in the suprasellar region, pushing the brainstem up and backward, and compressing the vermis and cerebellum on T2-weighted images. On T1-weighted images, the hypointense signal of the tumor was similar to that of the brain parenchyma. Ultrasound images showed a suprasellar mass, which was more echogenic than the normal cerebral parenchyma, posteriorly pushing the brain stem, with involvement of the vermis of the tumor and compression of the posterior fossa. Three-dimensional reconstruction using MRI scan data showed a space view of the tumor and its relationships with the other brain tissues allowing better understanding by parents and multidisciplinary team., (© 2023. Introduction: Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) in the genus Flavivirus and Flaviviridae family. In November 2015, several cases of microcephaly in Northeastern of Brazil suggested ZIKV involvement. Case Report: A 33-year-old primigravida developed fever and cutaneous rash at 7th week of gestation (WGA). The ultrasound and MRI examination showed head circumference < 5th centile and enlargement of lateral ventricles. The infant was delivered at 39th WGA with microcephaly. Microscopy of the placenta showed chronic villitis and intervillitis, nodular stromal fibrosis in the stem villi, and vascular thickening. Postnatal CT showed collapsed cranium due to growth impairment of the suprathalamic brain, multiple cerebral calcifications, parenchymal atrophy, and ventricular dilatation. Now, at 6 years old, the child suffers from severe neurologic symptoms, including seizures. Conclusion: This case gathers images of prenatal and postnatal period, and placental histopathology. The long-term follow-up highlights the dramatic neurological sequelae induced by ZIKV.

The horse is central to many Indigenous cultures across the American Southwest and the Great Plains. However, when and how horses were first integrated into Indigenous lifeways remain contentious, with extant models derived largely from colonial records. We conducted an interdisciplinary study of an assemblage of historic archaeological horse remains, integrating genomic, isotopic, radiocarbon, and paleopathological evidence. Archaeological and modern North American horses show strong Iberian genetic affinities, with later influx from British sources, but no Viking proximity. Horses rapidly spread from the south into the northern Rockies and central plains by the first half of the 17th century CE, likely through Indigenous exchange networks. They were deeply integrated into Indigenous societies before the arrival of 18th-century European observers, as reflected in herd management, ceremonial practices, and culture.

Fetal skeletal dysplasias involving limbs and hands are rare congenital malformations. Prenatal two-dimensional ultrasound diagnosis of fetal limb defects has a sensitivity of about 30%; however, an increased detection rate may be obtained using three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound in the rendering mode. 3-D ultrasound may be used as a complementary method providing additional information. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with the emergence of ultrafast imaging techniques and new sequences, allows for better diagnosis of several fetal skeletal dysplasias such as limb reduction defects and neuromuscular disorders. 3-D volumetric images from ultrasound or MRI scan data allow 3-D ultrasound reconstructions of virtual/physical models, and virtual reality can help researchers to improve our understanding of both normal and abnormal fetal limb/hand anatomy.
