We present an all-sky sample of 984 candidate intermediate-mass Galactic star-forming regions color-selected from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) Point Source Catalog and morphologically classify each object using mid-infrared Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) images. Of the 984 candidates, 616 are probable star-forming regions (62.6%), 128 are filamentary structures (13.0%), 39 are point-like objects of unknown nature (4.0%), and 201 are galaxies (20.4%). We conduct a study of four of these regions, IRAS 00259+5625, IRAS 00420+5530, IRAS 01080+5717, and IRAS 05380+2020, at Galactic latitudes |b| > 5 degrees using optical spectroscopy from the Wyoming Infrared Observatory along with near-infrared photometry from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey to investigate their stellar content. New optical spectra, color-magnitude diagrams, and color-color diagrams reveal their extinctions, spectrophotometric distances, and the presence of small stellar clusters containing 20-78 solar masses of stars. These low-mass diffuse star clusters contain 65-250 stars for a typical initial mass function, including one or more mid-B stars as their most massive constituents. Using infrared spectral energy distributions we identify young stellar objects near each region and assign probable masses and evolutionary stages to the protostars. We identify 709 arc-shaped mid-infrared nebula in 24 micron Spitzer Space Telescope or 22 micron Wide Field Infrared Explorer surveys of the Galactic Plane as probable dusty interstellar bowshocks powered by early-type stars. About 20% are visible at 8 microns or shorter mid-infrared wavelengths as well. The vast majority (660) have no previous identification in the literature. These extended infrared sources are strongly concentrated near Galactic mid-Plane with an angular scale height of ~0.6 degrees. All host a symmetrically placed star implicated as the source of a stellar wind sweeping up interstellar material. These are candidate "runaway" stars potentially having high velocities in the reference frame of the local medium. Among the 286 objects with measured proper motions, we find an unambiguous excess having velocity vectors aligned with the infrared morphology --- kinematic evidence that many of these are "runaway" stars with large peculiar motions responsible for the bowshock signature. We discuss a population of "in-situ" bowshocks (103 objects) that face giant HII regions where the relative motions between the star and ISM may be caused by bulk outflows from an overpressured bubble. We also identify 58 objects that face 8 micron bright-rimmed clouds and apparently constitute a sub-class of in-situ bowshocks where the stellar wind interacts with a photo-evaporative flow from an eroding molecular cloud interface (i.e., "PEF bowshocks"). Orientations of the arcuate nebulae exhibit a correlation over small angular scales, indicating that external influences such as HII regions are responsible for producing some bowshock nebulae. This study presents Keck optical and infrared spectroscopy of the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical emission lines in two Lyα-emitting galaxies at z > 2. These data provide insight on the evolution of fundamental galaxy scaling relations at early epochs, especially the luminosity-velocity and luminosity-metallicity relations. Spectral diagnostics suggest that the Coup Fourre galaxy at z = 2.3 and Lynx 2-9691, a serendipitously discovered, luminous Lyman drop galaxy at z = 2.9, are star-forming galaxies without active nuclei. Lynx 2-9691 exhibits extended [O III] emission over a diameter of greater than 28 kpc, reminiscent of the Lyα nebulae discovered near Lyman drop galaxies. We estimate star formation rates of 59 and 111 M☉ yr-1, respectively, from Balmer recombination line luminosities, 2-3 times higher than inferred from the ultraviolet continuum. The ratios of strong nebular emission lines indicate subsolar oxygen abundances in the range 8.2 < 12 + log(O/H) < 8.8 (Z = 0.25-0.95 Z☉). Interestingly, Galactic metal-rich globular clusters have similar metallicities, consistent with the idea that we could be seeing the formation of galaxies like the Milky Way at z ~ 3. The measured gas-phase oxygen abundances are greater than 4-10 times higher than the Z < 0.1 Z☉ metallicities found in damped Lyα (DLA) absorbers at similar redshifts, indicating that DLA systems trace fundamentally different environments than the vigorously star-forming objects observed here. If this intense star formation activity represents the dominant formation episodes for stars in today's spiral bulges or ellipticals, then the evolved descendants in the local universe should exhibit similarly subsolar metallicities in their dominant stellar populations that formed 8-10 Gyr ago. When these new data are combined with a sample of four other high-redshift spectroscopic results from the literature, we find that star-forming galaxies at z ~ 3 are 2-4 mag more luminous than local spiral galaxies of similar metallicity and thus are offset from the local luminosity-metallicity relation. Their kinematic line widths are σv = 65-130 km s-1, making this sample 1-3 mag more luminous than local galaxies of similar line width and mass. Less luminous Lyman drop galaxies need to be studied to see if these deviations are universal or apply to only the most luminous high-redshift galaxies.

The [O II] λ3727 emission lines and absorption features from stellar Balmer and Ca H and K lines are the most accessible kinematic diagnostics in galaxies at z ~ 1. We investigate the kinematics of 22 local late-type galaxies using these spectral features, and we compare the results with 21 cm neutral hydrogen spectra in order to assess the utility of each diagnostic for measuring galaxy masses. In order to simulate data at high redshift, where only one-dimensional velocity profiles are normally available, we study spatially integrated, as well as spatially resolved, spectra. Although the studied galaxies span a wide range of morphological types, inclinations, and star formation rates, we find that the gaseous and stellar kinematic tracers yield comparable kinematic line widths and systemic velocities. The [O II] and H I line widths correlate most strongly, showing an intrinsic dispersion of ~20 km s-1, or ~10% for a typical galaxy with a kinematic width of 200 km s-1. In a few extreme cases, the [O II] line widths underestimate the neutral hydrogen width by 50%. Reliable velocity widths can also be obtained from the stellar Balmer and Ca H and K absorption lines, even for some of the very late type galaxies that have strong emission lines. The intrinsic dispersion is ≤10% between the stellar absorption and H I line widths. We provide a prescription for using these strong stellar absorption and [O II] emission features to measure the kinematics, and thus masses, of galaxies in the distant universe.

The advent of 8--10 meter class telescopes enables direct measurement of the chemical properties in the ionized gas of cosmologically--distant galaxies with the same nebular analysis techniques used in local H II regions. We show that spatially unresolved (i.e., global) emission line spectra can reliably indicate the chemical properties of distant star-forming galaxies. However, standard nebular chemical abundance measurement methods (those with a measured electron temperature from [O III] lambda4363) may be subject to small systematic errors when the observed volume includes a mixture of gas with diverse temperatures, ionization parameters, and metallicities. To characterize these systematic effects, we compare physical conditions derived from spectroscopy of individual H II regions with results from global galaxy spectroscopy. We consider both low-mass, metal poor galaxies with uniform abundances and larger galaxies with internal chemical gradients. Well-established empirical calibrations using strong-line ratios can serve as reliable (~0.2 dex) indicators of the overall systemic oxygen abundance even when the signal-to-noise of the Hbeta and [O III] emission lines is as low as 8:1. We combine these new observations with data from the literature to form a sample of dwarf galaxies that all have CO observations and measured oxygen abundances. No known galaxies with 12 + log (O/H) 8.1] metallicities are detected at similar or higher ICO surface brightnesses. The data are consistent with a strong dependence of the ICO/M ≡ XCO conversion factor on ambient metallicity. The strikingly low upper limits on some metal-poor galaxies lead us to predict that the conversion factor is nonlinear, increasing sharply below ~1/10 of the solar metallicity [12 + log (O/H) ≤ 7.9].

Using Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and ground-based optical spectroscopy, we measure the C/O and N/O ratios of three metal-poor galaxies with similar metallicity but differing N/O. The C/O ratios estimated from C III] lambda1909 and [O III] lambda5007 lines are consistent with those measured from C II] lambda2326 and [O II] lambda3727 lines. We develop the use of the C^+/O^+ ratio as a reasonable substitute diagnostic of the carbon abundance in HII regions. The proximity of the C II] lambda2326 multiplet to the [O II] lambda3726,3729 lines makes these transitions a potential tool for measuring the carbon abundance in high-redshift objects. Derived chemical properties are consistent with a significant correlation between N and C abundances in metal-poor extragalactic HII regions. This result is unexpected if the dispersion in N/O among galaxies of similar metallicity is caused by localized, temporary chemical enrichments from massive stars. The presence of a correlation suggests that the majority of N and C production is coupled, as expected from chemical evolution models where C is produced predominantly by low mass stars and N is produced predominantly by intermediate mass stars. Since the occurance of localized chemical "pollution" in star-forming galaxies appears to be low, the relative overabundance of N in some galaxies compared to others at similar metallicity is most plausibly interpreted as an indicator of the global, secular chemical enrichment history. The N/O and perhaps the C/O ratios can be used as a ``clock'' to estimate the time since the last major episode of star formation.

Optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph at three locations in the central H II complex of the amorphous starburst galaxy NGC 5253 confirms an apparent area of enhanced nitrogen abundance seen in ground-based studies. At two positions, N appears enhanced by a factor of 3 [log (N/O) = -0.85] compared to a third location 50 pc away where the measured N abundance is typical of metal-poor galaxies [log (N/O) = -1.30]. No other elemental species shows spatial abundance fluctuations, including C as measured from the C III] ??1907, 1909 ? emission lines. Extinction to the emission-line regions is quite low (AV = 0.25), and we rule out reddening uncertainties as the cause of the apparent N enhancement. Comparison of the observed ionic fractions to predictions of photoionization models shows that ionization uncertainties cannot be responsible for the anomalously high N/O ratio. These findings require the existence of a N production mechanism that is decoupled from C and O production. Although the high N/He enrichment ratio is consistent with that expected from non-Type I planetary nebulae (PNs), the localized nature of the enrichment, the large number of PNs (150-500), and the long timescales (109 yr) required make this explanation highly unlikely. Given the proximity of the N overabundance to a very young, heavily obscured star cluster, we attribute the N excess to recent pollution from massive stars. Plausible N enrichment scenarios involve O star winds, He-deficient W-R star winds, and/or ejection events from luminous blue variables. If the N enrichment is due to localized pollution from the winds of W-R stars observed in the burst, then an accompanying He enrichment of 40% ought to be observed, but we are able to rule out He enhancements at the 2 ? level at both locations showing N enhancement. We propose that if the N-rich wind or ejecta is incorporated into self-gravitating clumps of molecular gas, and if the 106 yr old clusters of massive stars in starburst galaxies are precursors of globular clusters, then N-overabundant halo and globular cluster stars in the Galaxy may owe their chemical peculiarity to similar N-enrichment episodes early in the history of the Milky Way.

We report Hα imaging and optical spectrophotometry of a faint H II region in the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy, a low-luminosity, possible Local Group member. We find that the emission-line spectrum is consistent with excitation by a single star with a temperature of less than 35,000 K, in agreement with Aparicio & Gallart (1995). Although we cannot measure the electron temperature of the ionized gas directly, we can infer a narrow range in electron temperature by comparing the emission-line spectrum with photoionization models. Then we derive a relatively low oxygen abundance of approximately 10% of the solar value, in accordance with the well-known metallicity-luminosity relationship for dwarf irregular galaxies. We also find an N/O ratio of 6%, which is higher than the typical value of 3% found in more actively star-forming dwarf irregular galaxies. By comparing this high N/O ratio with the recent star formation history of the Pegasus dwarf irregular derived by Aparicio & Gallart, we hypothesize that this may be evidence of delayed N production.

WOS: 000318232000057, We report on a multisite photometric campaign on the high-amplitude delta Scuti star V2367 Cyg in order to determine the pulsation modes. We also used high-dispersion spectroscopy to estimate the stellar parameters and projected rotational velocity. Time series multicolour photometry was obtained during a 98-d interval from five different sites. These data were used together with model atmospheres and non-adiabatic pulsation models to identify the spherical harmonic degree of the three independent frequencies of highest amplitude as well as the first two harmonics of the dominant mode. This was accomplished by matching the observed relative light amplitudes and phases in different wavebands with those computed by the models. Context: Nonthermal radio emission in massive stars is expected to arise in wind-wind collisions occurring inside a binary system. One such case, the O-type star Cyg OB2 #9, was proven to be a binary only four years ago, but the orbital parameters remained uncertain. The periastron passage of 2011 was the first one to be observable under good conditions since the discovery of binarity. Aims: In this context, we have organized a large monitoring campaign to refine the orbital solution and to study the wind-wind collision. Methods: This paper presents the analysis of optical spectroscopic data, as well as of a dedicated X-ray monitoring performed with Swift and XMM. Results: In light of our refined orbital solution, Cyg OB2 #9 appears as a massive O+O binary with a long period and high eccentricity; its components (O5-5.5I for the primary and O3-4III for the secondary) have similar masses and similar luminosities. The new data also provide the first evidence that a wind-wind collision is present in the system. In the optical domain, the broad Ha line varies, displaying enhanced absorption and emission components at periastron. X-ray observations yield the unambiguous signature of an adiabatic collision because, as the stars approach periastron, the X-ray luminosity closely follows the 1/D variation expected in that case. The X-ray spectrum appears, however, slightly softer at periastron, which is probably related to winds colliding at slightly lower speeds at that time. Conclusions: It is the first time that such a variation has been detected in O+O systems, and the first case where the wind-wind collision is found to remain adiabatic even at periastron passage., 16p incl. online material, accepted by A&A

We have identified a previously unrecognized population of very compact, embedded low-mass Galactic stellar clusters. These tight (r$ \approx $0.14 pc) groupings appear as bright singular objects at the few arcsec resolution of the Spitzer Space Telescope at 8 and 24 $\mu$m but become resolved in the sub-arcsecond UKIDSS images. They average six stars per cluster surrounded by diffuse infrared emission and coincide with 100 -- 300 M$_{\sun}$ clumps of molecular material within a larger molecular cloud. The magnitudes of the brightest stars are consistent with mid- to early-B stars anchoring $\sim$80 M$_{\sun}$ star clusters. Their evolutionary descendants are likely to be Herbig Ae/Be pre-main sequence clusters. These ultra-compact embedded clusters (UCECs) may fill part of the low-mass void in the embedded cluster mass function. Mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic Legacy Infrared MidPlane Survey Extraordinaire program reveal that the infrared source IRAS 03063+5735 is a bowshock nebula produced by an early B star, 2MASS 03101044+5747035. We present new optical spectra of this star, classify it as a B1.5 V, and determine a probable association with a molecular cloud complex at V_LSR=-38 -- -42 km/s in the outer Galaxy near l=140.59 degr, b=-0.250 degr. On the basis of spectroscopic parallax, we estimate a distance of 4.0 +/-1 kpc to both the bowshock nebula and the molecular complex. One plausible scenario is that this a high-velocity runaway star impinging upon a molecular cloud. We identify the HII region and stellar cluster associated with IRAS 03064+5638 at a projected distance of 64 pc as one plausible birth site. The spectrophotometric distance and linkage to a molecular feature provides another piece of data helping to secure the ill-determined rotation curve in the outer Galaxy. As a by-product of spectral typing this star, we present empirical spectral diagnostic diagrams suitable for approximate spectral classification of O and B stars using He lines in the little-used yellow-red portion of the optical spectrum., Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We report the discovery and orbital solutions for two new OB binaries in the Cygnus OB2 Association, MT311 (B2V+B3V) and MT605 (B0.5V+B2.5:V). We also identify the system MT429 as a probable triple system consisting of a tight eclipsing 2.97 day B3V+B6V pair and a B0V at a projected separation of 138 AU. We further provide the first spectroscopic orbital solutions to the eclipsing, double-lined, O-star binary MT696 (O9.5V+B1:V), the double-lined, early B binary MT720 (B0-1V+B1-2V), and the double-lined, O-star binary MT771 (O7V+O9V). These systems exhibit orbital periods between 1.5 days and 12.3 days, with the majority having P, 42 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, minor typos have been fixed

Earth- and space-based observations provide synergistic information for space mission encounters by providing data over longer timescales, at different wavelengths and using techniques that are impossible with an in situ flyby. We report here such observations in support of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2. The nucleus is small and dark, and exhibited a very rapidly changing rotation period. Prior to the onset of activity, the period was ∼16.4 hr. Starting in 2010 August the period changed from 16.6 hr to near 19 hr in December. With respect to dust composition, most volatiles and carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, the comet is similar to other Jupiter-family comets. What is unusual is the dominance of CO2-driven activity near perihelion, which likely persists out to aphelion. Near perihelion the comet nucleus was surrounded by a large halo of water-ice grains that contributed significantly to the total water production. Fil: Meech, K. J.. After the first detection of its binary nature, the spectroscopic monitoring of the non-thermal radio emitter Cyg OB2 #9 (P=2.4yrs) has continued, doubling the number of available spectra of the star. Since the discovery paper of 2008, a second periastron passage has occurred in February 2009. Using a variety of techniques, the radial velocities could be estimated and a first, preliminary orbital solution was derived from the HeI5876 line. The mass ratio appears close to unity and the eccentricity is large, 0.7--0.75. X-ray data from 2004 and 2007 are also analyzed in quest of peculiarities linked to binarity. The observations reveal no large overluminosity nor strong hardness, but it must be noted that the high-energy data were taken after the periastron passage, at a time where colliding wind emission may be low. Some unusual X-ray variability is however detected, with a 10% flux decrease between 2004 and 2007. Chandra X-ray imaging spectroscopy of the starburst galaxy Henize 2-10 reveals a strong nuclear point source and at least two fainter compact sources embedded within a more luminous diffuse thermal component. Spectral fits to the nuclear X-ray source imply an unabsorbed X-ray luminosity L_x >10^40 erg/s for reasonable power law or blackbody models, consistent with accretion onto a >50 solar mass black hole behind a foreground absorbing column of N_H>10^23 /cm^2. Two of these point sources have L_x=2-5 x 10^38 erg/s, comparable to luminous X-ray binaries. In an effort to understand the factors that govern the transition from low- to high-mass star formation, we identify for the first time a sample of intermediate-mass star-forming regions (IM SFRs) where stars up to - but not exceeding - 8 solar masses are being produced. We use IRAS colors and Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR images, in conjunction with millimeter continuum and CO maps, to compile a sample of 50 IM SFRs in the inner Galaxy. These are likely to be precursors to Herbig AeBe stars and their associated clusters of low-mass stars. IM SFRs constitute embedded clusters at an early evolutionary stage akin to compact HII regions, but they lack the massive ionizing central star(s). The photodissociation regions that demarcate IM SFRs have typical diameters of ~1 pc and luminosities of ~10^4 solar luminosities, making them an order of magnitude less luminous than (ultra)compact HII regions. IM SFRs coincide with molecular clumps of mass ~10^3 solar masses which, in turn, lie within larger molecular clouds spanning the lower end of the giant molecular cloud mass range, 10^4-10^5 solar masses. The IR luminosity and associated molecular mass of IM SFRs are correlated, consistent with the known luminosity-mass relationship of compact HII regions. Peak mass column densities within IM SFRs are ~0.1-0.5 g/cm^2, a factor of several lower than ultra-compact HII regions, supporting the proposition that there is a threshold for massive star formation at ~1 g/cm^2., Comment: 61 pages, 6 tables, 20 figures. We investigate the nature of the mid-IR excess for 31 intermediate-mass stars that exhibit an 8 micron excess in either the Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire or the Mid-Course Space Experiment using high resolution optical spectra to identify stars surrounded by warm circumstellar dust. From these data we determine projected stellar rotational velocities and estimate stellar effective temperatures for the sample. We estimate stellar ages from these temperatures, parallactic distances, and evolutionary models. Using MIPS [24] measurements and stellar parameters we determine the nature of the infrared excess for 19 GLIMPSE stars. We find that 15 stars exhibit Halpha emission and four exhibit Halpha absorption. Assuming that the mid-IR excesses arise in circumstellar disks, we use the Halpha fluxes to model and estimate the relative contributions of dust and free-free emission. Six stars exhibit Halpha fluxes that imply free-free emission can plausibly explain the infrared excess at [24]. These stars are candidate classical Be stars. Nine stars exhibit Halpha emission, but their Halpha fluxes are insufficient to explain the infrared excesses at [24], suggesting the presence of a circumstellar dust component. After the removal of the free-free component in these sources, we determine probable disk dust temperatures of Tdisk~300-800 K and fractional infrared luminosities of L(IR)/L(*)~10^-3. These nine stars may be pre-main-sequence stars with transitional disks undergoing disk clearing. Three of the four sources showing Halpha absorption exhibit circumstellar disk temperatures ~300-400 K, L(IR)/L(*)~10^-3, IR colors K-[24]< 3.3, and are warm debris disk candidates. One of the four Halpha absorption sources has K-[24]> 3.3 implying an optically thick outer disk and is a transition disk candidate., 17 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

As part of an ongoing study to determine the distribution of orbital parameters for massive binaries in the Cygnus OB2 Association, we present the orbital solutions for two new single-lined spectroscopic binaries, MT059 (O8V) & MT258 (O8V), and one double-lined eclipsing binary (Schulte 3). We also constrain the orbital elements of three additional double-lined systems (MT252, MT720, MT771). Periods for all systems range from 1.5-19 days and eccentricities range from 0-0.11. The six new OB binary systems bring the total number of multiple systems within the core region of Cyg OB2 to 11. The incidence of dusty debris disks around low- and intermediate-mass stars has been investigated numerous times in order to understand the early stages of planet formation. Most notably, the IRAS mission observed the entire sky at mid- and far-IR wavelengths, identifying the first debris disk systems, but was unable to detect a statistically significant sample of warm debris disks due to its limited sensitivity at 12 microns. Using Tycho-2 Spectral Catalog stars previously shown to exhibit 8 micron mid-infrared circumstellar excesses confirmed at 24 microns in the Spitzer GLIMPSE survey, we investigate the frequency of mid-IR excesses among intermediate-mass (2--4 solar mass) stars in a complete volume-limited sample. Our study of 338 stars is four times larger than a complete sample of 12 micron sources from the IRAS Point Source Catalog. We find that 0.3+-0.3% of intermediate-mass stars exhibit a signature of a possible terrestrial-temperature debris disks at wavelengths of 8 microns and greater. We also find that 1.2+-0.6% of intermediate-mass stars exhibit evidence for circumstellar disks undergoing inner disk clearing, i.e., candidate transition disk systems. Using stellar lifetimes and the frequency of transition and primordial disks within a given spectral type, we find that pre-main-sequence disks around intermediate-mass stars dissipate in 5+-2 Myr, consistent with other studies., Comment: 4 Figures. In Spitzer/IRAC images obtained under the GLIMPSE Legacy Survey, we have identified a unique and provocative nebular object we call the "Southern Jellyfish Nebula." The Southern Jellyfish Nebula is characterized by a fan of narrow tendrils with extreme length-to-width ratios that emanate from the vicinity of a bright infrared point source embedded in a smaller resolved nebula. From CO observations of the Nebula's morphologically associated molecular cloud, we have derived a kinematic distance of 5.7 ± 0.8 kpc and a cloud mass of 3.2 ± 0.9 × 10^3 M_⊙. The tendril-like ropes of the Nebula have widths of ~0.1 pc and lengths of up to ~2 pc. We have integrated the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of the point source to establish it as a massive young stellar object (MYSO), most likely forming alone, but possibly masking fainter cluster members. The shape of the SED is consistent with the shape of a late Class 0 SED model. Based on its far-IR luminosity of 3.3 ± 0.9 × 10^4 L_⊙, the Southern Jellyfish's MYSO has a zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) spectral type of B0. Given the curious nature of this nebula, we suspect its peculiar IR-bright structure is directly related to its current state of star formation.

We present multi-epoch spectroscopy of "heartbeat stars," eccentric binaries with dynamic tidal distortions and tidally induced pulsations originally discovered with the Kepler satellite. Optical spectra of six known heartbeat stars using the Wyoming Infrared Observatory 2.3 m telescope allow measurement of stellar effective temperatures and radial velocities from which we determine orbital parameters including the periods, eccentricities, approximate mass ratios, and component masses. These spectroscopic solutions confirm that the stars are members of eccentric binary systems with eccentricities e > 0.34 and periods P = 7–20 days, strengthening conclusions from prior works that utilized purely photometric methods. Heartbeat stars in this sample have A- or F-type primary components. Constraints on orbital inclinations indicate that four of the six systems have minimum mass ratios q = 0.3–0.5, implying that most secondaries are probable M dwarfs or earlier. One system is an eclipsing, double-lined spectroscopic binary with roughly equal-mass mid-A components (q = 0.95), while another shows double-lined behavior only near periastron, indicating that the F0V primary has a G1V secondary (q = 0.65). This work constitutes the first measurements of the masses of secondaries in a statistical sample of heartbeat stars. The good agreement between our spectroscopic orbital elements and those derived using a photometric model support the idea that photometric data are sufficient to derive reliable orbital parameters for heartbeat stars.

We have conducted a 13CO survey of a sample of 128 infrared color-selected intermediate-mass star-forming region (IM SFR) candidates. We utilized the Onsala 20 m telescope to observe 13CO (1–0) toward 67 northern IM SFRs, used the 12 m Atacama Pathfinder Experiment telescope to observe 13CO (2–1) toward 22 southern IM SFRs, and incorporated an additional 39 sources from the Boston University Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey which observed 13CO (1–0). We detect 13CO (1–0) in 58 of the 67 northern sources and 13CO (2–1) in 20 of the 22 southern sources. The mean molecular column densities and 13CO linewidths in the inner Galaxy are higher by factors of 3.4 and 1.5, respectively, than the outer Galaxy. We attribute this difference to molecular clouds in the inner Galaxy being more massive and hosting star forming regions with higher luminosities on average than the outer Galaxy. IM SFRs have mean a molecular column density of 7.89 × 1021 cm−2, a factor of 3.1 lower than that for a sample of high-mass regions, and have a mean 13CO linewidth of 1.84 km s−1, a factor of 1.5 lower than that for high-mass regions. We demonstrate a correlation between 13CO linewidth and infrared luminosity as well as between molecular column density and infrared luminosity for the entire sample of intermediate-mass and high-mass regions. IM SFRs appear to form in distinctly lower-density environments with mean linewidths and beam-averaged column densities a factor of several lower than high-mass star-forming regions.

We constrain the properties of massive binaries by comparing radial velocity data of Cygnus OB2 with Monte Carlo models. Our comparisons test several popular prescriptions for massive binary parameters. We explore a range of true binary fraction, F, a range of power-law slopes, \alpha, describing the distribution of companion masses, and a range of power-law slopes, \beta, describing the distribution of orbital separations. We also consider distributions of secondary masses described by a Miller-Scalo type initial mass function and by a two-component IMF that includes a substantial ``twin'' population with M_2 ~ M_1. We show that binary fractions F0.8. Thus, the true binary fraction is high. For F=1.0 and a distribution of orbital separations near the canonical Opik's Law distribution (i.e., flat; \beta=0), the power law slope of the mass ratio distribution is \alpha= -0.6 - 0.0. For F~0.8, \alpha is somewhat larger, in the range -0.4 - 1.0. In any case, the secondary star mass function is inconsistent with a Miller-Scalo -like IMF unless the lower end is truncated below ~ 2--4 solar masses. In other words, massive stars preferentially have massive companions. The best fitting models are described by a Salpeter or Miller-Scalo IMF for 60% of secondary star masses with the other 40% of secondaries having M_2 ~ M_1, i.e., ``twins''. (abridged) NGC 1569 is an ideal test environment to understand the impact of "feedback" from massive stars on the surrounding ISM. We present HST WFPC2 narrowband imagery of NGC 1569 in an attempt to understand the underlying ionizing emission mechanisms on a 3 pc scale and to generate a H II region size distribution and luminosity function. We use [O III]/Hbeta and [S II]/Halpha ratio maps to find that non-photoionizing mechanisms (e.g. shocks) are responsible for 10%+/-3% of the Halpha emission, 2.3-3.3 times larger than results from similar galaxies. Our results for NGC 1569 indicate that these non-photoionized areas do not lie in low surface brightness regions exclusively. To explain this large percentage of non-photoionized emission, we suggest that NGC 1569 is, indeed, in a post-starburst phase as previous authors have claimed. We also derived slopes for the H II region luminosity function (-1.00+/-0.08) and size distribution (-3.02+/-0.27). The luminosity slope, though shallow, is similar to previous work on this galaxy and other irregular galaxies. We have identified 230 Tycho-2 Spectral Catalog stars that exhibit 8 micron mid-infrared extraphotospheric excesses in the MidCourse Space Experiment (MSX) and Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic Legacy MidPlane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) surveys. Of these, 183 are either OB stars earlier than B8 in which the excess plausibly arises from a thermal bremsstrahlung component or evolved stars in which the excess may be explained by an atmospheric dust component. The remaining 47 stars have spectral classifications B8 or later and appear to be main sequence or late pre-main-sequence objects harboring circumstellar disks. Six of the 47 stars exhibit multiple signatures characteristic of pre-main-sequence circumstellar disks, including emission lines, near-infrared K-band excesses, and X-ray emission. Approximately one-third of the remaining 41 sources have emission lines suggesting relative youth. Of the 25 GLIMPSE stars with SST data at >24 microns, 20 also show an excess at 24 microns. Three additional objects have 24 micron upper limits consistent with possible excesses, and two objects have photospheric measurements at 24 microns. Six MSX sources had a measurement at wavelengths >8 microns. We modeled the excesses in 26 stars having two or more measurements in excess of the expected photospheres as single-component blackbodies. We determine probable disk temperatures and fractional infrared luminosities in the range 191 < T < 787 and 3.9x10^-4 < L_IR/L_* < 2.7x10^-1. We estimate a lower limit on the fraction of Tycho-2 Spectral Catalog main-sequence stars having mid-IR, but not near-IR, excesses to be 1.0+-0.3%., Accepted to ApJ

We present ultraviolet, optical, near-infrared, Spitzer mid-infrared, and radio images of 14 radio-selected objects in M 33. These objects are thought to represent the youngest phase of star cluster formation. We have detected the majority of cluster candidates in M 33 at all wavelengths. From the near-IR images, we derived ages 2-10 Myr, K_S-band extinctions (A_K_S) of 0-1 mag, and stellar masses of 10^3-10^4 M_solar. We have generated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of each cluster from 0.1 micron to 160 microns. From these SEDs, we have modeled the dust emission around these star clusters to determine the dust masses (1-10^3 M_solar) and temperatures (40-90 K) of the clusters' local interstellar medium. Extinctions derived from the JHK_S, Halpha, and UV images are similar to within a factor of 2 or 3. These results suggest that eleven of the fourteen radio-selected objects are optically-visible young star clusters with a surrounding H II region, that two are background objects, possibly AGN, and that one is a Wolf-Rayet star with a surrounding H II region., Comment: 57 pages total; 20 figures; 3 tables under review by ApJS; first review complete

The GLIMPSE (Galactic Legacy Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire) Point Source Catalog of ~ 30 million mid-infrared sources towards the inner Galaxy, 10 < |l| < 65 degrees and |b| < 1 degree, was used to determine the distribution of stars in Galactic longitude, latitude, and apparent magnitude. The counts versus longitude can be approximated by the modified Bessel function N=N_0*(l/l_0)*K_1(l/l_0), where l_0 is insensitive to limiting magnitude, band choice, and side of Galactic center: l_0= 17-30 degrees with a best fit value in the the 4.5 micron band of l_0=24 +/- 4 degrees. Modeling the source distribution as an exponential disk yields a radial scale length of H= 3.9 +/- 0.6 kpc. There is a pronounced north-south asymmetry in source counts for |l| < 30 degrees, with ~ 25% more stars in the north. For l=10-30 degrees, there is a strong enhancement of stars of m= 11.5-13.5 mag. A linear bar passing through the Galactic center with half-length R_bar=4.4 +/- 0.5 kpc, tilted by phi=44 +/- 10 degrees to the Sun-Galactic Center line, provides the simplest interpretation of this data. We examine the possibility that enhanced source counts at l=26-28 degrees, 31.5-34 degrees, and 306-309 degrees are related to Galactic spiral structure. Total source counts are depressed in regions where the counts of red objects (m_K-m_[8.0] >3) peak. Metallicity is intricately related to star formation because metals are injected into the interstellar medium by stellar mass-loss processes. Theory suggests that metallicity changes less rapidly than star-formation rate as a function of redshift, but until now, there has been no solid observational foundation for the cosmic metallicity history of star-forming galaxies. We present the first results of our new investigation into the metallicity history of star-forming (emissionline) galaxies between redshifts 0 < z < 3. This analysis provides an initial insight into the evolution of metallicity for star-forming galaxies spanning the redshift range 0 < z < 3.

The University of Wisconsin - Madison, together with Rutgers University and the South African Astronomical Observatory, is designing and building an imaging spectrograph for the Prime Focus Instrument Package of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). The Prime Focus Imaging Spectrograph (PFIS) will be a versatile instrument specializing in very high throughput, low and medium resolution (R=500-12,500) imaging spectroscopy, using volume phase holographic (VPH) gratings and a double etalon Fabry-Perot interferometer, and spectropolarimetry from 320 to 900 nm. The optical design includes all transmissive optics for high efficiency and compactness. To maintain throughput in the ultraviolet, only fused silica, CaF2 and NaCl are used. As NaCl is very hygroscopic, the design uses NaCl as the inner element in sealed triplets only. For the highest possible first-order spectral resolution, the collimated beam size is 150 mm - the maximum for practical Fabry-Perot etalons. The F/2.2 camera can be articulated to tune the efficiency of the VPH gratings; a complement of six gratings (5 VPH and 1 standard transmission grating) has been designed to fill the resolution-wavelength space available to the instrument. Linear, circular, and all-stokes spectropolarimetry will be performed through the use of Pancharatnam superachromatic waveplates and a Wollaston beamsplitter.

The Prime Focus Imaging Spectrograph (PFIS) will be the workhorse first-light instrument on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Scheduled for commissioning in late 2004, PFIS is a versatile high-throughput imaging spectrograph with a complement of 5 volume-phase holographic gratings for spectroscopic programs from 3200a to 9000a at resolutions of R=1500 to R=6000. A magazine of 6 longslits and 30 custom laser-milled slitmasks enables single- or multi-object spectroscopy over an 8 arcminute diameter field. With the gratings stowed, a dual-etalon Fabry-Perot subsystem enables imaging spectroscopy at R=500, R=3000, and R=12,500. The polarization subsystem, consisting of a polarizing beam-splitter used in conjunction with half- and quarter-wave plates, allow linear or circular polarimetric measurements in ANY of the spectroscopic modes. Three mosaiced rapid-readout frame-transfer CCDs provide the capability for time-resolved sampling at rates in excess of 10 Hz. Combinations of these subsystems permit novel observing modes for specialized scientific programs. Examples include high-time resolution multi-object spectral polarizmetry of accreting compact objects, and Fabry-Perot polarimetry or imaging spectral polarimetry of nebulae and stellar clusters. The demands of queue-scheduled observing on a fixed-altitude telescope require that the instrument be capable of rapid reconfiguration between modes.

Linear spectropolarimetry of spectral lines is a neglected field in astronomy, largely because of the lack of instrumentation. Techniques that have been applied, but rarely, include investigation of the dynamics of scattering envelopes through the polarization of electron- or dust-scattered nebular light. Untried techniques include promising new magnetic diagnostics like the Hanle Effect in the far-ultraviolet and magnetic realignment in the visible. The University of Wisconsin Space Astronomy Lab is developing instrumentation for such investigations. In the visible, the Prime Focus Imaging Spectrograph (PFIS) is a first light instrument for the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), which at an aperture of 11m will be the largest single telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. Scheduled for commissioning in late 2004, PFIS is a versatile high-throughput imaging spectrograph using volume-phase holographic gratings for spectroscopic programs from 320nm to 900nm at resolutions of R=500 to R=6000. A dual-etalon Fabry-Perot subsystem enables imaging spectroscopy at R=500 and R=3000 or 12,500. The polarization subsystem, consisting of a very large calcite polarizing beam-splitter used in conjunction with half- and quarter-wave Pancharatnam superachromatic plates, allow linear or circular polarimetric measurements in any of the spectroscopic modes. In the FUV, the Far-Ultraviolet SpectroPolarimeter (FUSP) is a sounding rocket payload, scheduled for its first flight in 2003, that will obtain the first high-precision spectropolarimetry from 105 - 150 nm, and the first astronomical polarimetry of any kind below 130 nm. The 50 cm primary mirror of the telescope is F/2.5. At the prime focus are the polarimetric optics, a stressed lithium fluoride rotating waveplate, followed by a synthetic diamond Brewster-angle mirror. The spectrometer uses an aberration-corrected spherical holographic grating and a UV-sensitized CCD detector, for a spectral resolution of R=1800.

(Abridged) We present deep, Chandra spectral imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The unprecedented spatial resolution allows us to spatially identify the components of the integrated \x spectrum. Fitted spectral models require an intrinsic absorption component and higher metal abundances than previous studies indicated. Our results provide the first direct evidence for metal-enriched winds from dwarf starburst galaxies., 44 pages and 22 figures. We analyze orbital solutions for 48 massive multiple-star systems in the Cygnus OB2 Association, 23 of which are newly presented here, to find that the observed distribution of orbital periods is approximately uniform in log P for P 45 d, even after correction for completeness, indicating either a lower binary fraction or a shift toward low-mass companions. A high degree of similarity (91% likelihood) between the Cyg OB2 period distribution and that of other surveys suggests that the binary properties at P, Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present Arecibo 21 cm spectroscopy and Keck echelle Hβ spectroscopy of 11 local galaxies selected to resemble the blue, compact starforming galaxies which are observed at intermediate redshifts. Although measurement of the HI properties of our sample does not allow strong constraints to be placed on the evolutionary descendants of our sample, we can infer that their counterparts in the intermediate and high-redshift universe are likely to be similarly low mass and gas rich. We have found that the ratios of optical Balmer linewidths to HI 21 cm linewidths are systematically less than unity, with an average value of 0.66 ± 0.16. This fraction correlates strongly with the Hβ linewidth, concentration index and α equivalent width. A combination of these parameters could be used to apply correction factors which enable robust measurements of the masses of similar galaxies at cosmological distances.

Embedded massive starclusters have recently been identified in several nearby galaxies by means of the radio-wave thermal bremsstrahlung emission from their surrounding HII regions. Energy requirements imply that these optically-obscured starclusters contain 500–1000 O-type stars, making them similar to the “super starclusters” observed in many dwarf starbursts and mergers. Based on their high free-free optical depth and visual extinctions of AV ≫ 10 mag, these massive “ultra-dense” HII regions (UDHIIs) are distinct signatures of the youngest, most compact super starclusters. UDHII regions may represent the earliest stages of globular cluster formation. We review the properties of presently-known UDHIIs, and we outline a pictoral evolutionary taxonomy for massive cluster formation which is analogous to the more familiar evolutionary sequence for individual stars.

The age-metallicity relation for F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighborhood, based on the stellar metallicity data of Edvardsson et al. (1993), shows an apparent scatter that is larger than expected considering the uncertainties in metallicities and ages. A number of theoretical models have been put forward to explain the large scatter. However, we present evidence, based on Edvardsson et al. (1993) data, along with Hipparcos parallaxes and new age estimates, that the scatter in the age-metallicity relation depends on the distance to the stars in the sample, such that stars within 30 pc of the Sun show significantly less scatter in [Fe/H]. Stars of intermediate age from the Edvardsson et al. sample at distances 30-80 pc from the Sun are systematically more metal-poor than those more nearby. We also find that the slope of the apparent age-metallicity relation is different for stars within 30 pc than for those stars more distant. These results are most likely an artifact of selection biases in the Edvardsson et al. star sample. We conclude that the intrinsic dispersion in metallicity at fixed age is < 0.15 dex, consistent with the < 0.1 dex scatter for Galactic open star clusters and the interstellar medium., 15 pages, 5 figures, uses AASTex aaspp4 style; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The warm ionized gas in low-mass, metal-poor starforming galaxies is chemically homogeneous despite the prevalence of large H II regions which contain hundreds of evolved massive stars, supernovae, and Wolf-Rayet stars with chemically-enriched winds. Galaxies with large Wolf-Rayet star content are chemically indistinguishable from other vigorously star-forming galaxies. Furthermore, no significant localized chemical fluctuations are present in the vicinity of young star clusters, despite large expected chemical yields of massive stars. An ad-hoc fine-tuning of the release, dispersal and mixing of the massive star ejecta could give rise to the observed homogeneity, but a more probable explanation is that fresh ejecta from massive stars reside in a hard-to-observe hot or cold phase. In any case, the observed chemical homogeneity indicates that heavy elements which have already mixed with the warm interstellar medium (thus accessible to optical spectroscopy) are homogeneously dispersed over scales exceeding 1 kpc. Mixing of fresh ejecta with the surrounding warm ISM apparently requires longer than the lifetimes of typical H II regions (>10^7 yrs). It is now possible to study the chemical properties of distant galaxies through emission line diagnostics which have long been used in local H II regions. Initial results from a sample of compact, narrow emission line galaxies at z=0.2 to z=0.5 show a range of metallicities from metal-poor like the SMC to super solar. The oxygen abundances correlate strongly with optical luminosity just like local galaxies. This suggests that the chemical production and retention in individual galaxies is determined predominantly by local characteristics, such as the integrated star formation activity and the depth of the gravitational potential rather than the cosmic star formation history. The ratios of specific elements like nitrogen-to-oxygen can constrain the evolutionary descendants of hi-z galaxies.

We measure oxygen and nitrogen abundances for 14 star-forming emission line galaxies (ELGs) at 0.11 -1.4 like local spirals. These chemical properties are inconsistent with unevolved objects undergoing a first burst of star formation. The majority of the ELGs are presently ~4 magnitudes brighter and ~0.5 dex more metal-rich than the bulk of the stars in well-known metal-poor dwarf spheroidals such as NGC 205 and NGC 185, making an evolution between some ELGs and metal-poor dwarf spheroidals improbable. However, the data are consistent with the hypothesis that more luminous and metal-rich spheroidal galaxies like NGC 3605 may become the evolutionary endpoints of some ELGs. We characterize the completeness of point source lists from Spitzer Space Telescope surveys in the four Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) bandpasses, emphasizing the Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) programs (GLIMPSE I, II, 3D, 360; Deep GLIMPSE) and their resulting point source Catalogs and Archives. The analysis separately addresses effects of incompleteness resulting from high diffuse background emission and incompleteness resulting from point source confusion (i.e., crowding). An artificial star addition and extraction analysis demonstrates that completeness is strongly dependent on local background brightness and structure, with high-surface-brightness regions suffering up to five magnitudes of reduced sensitivity to point sources. This effect is most pronounced at the IRAC 5.8 and 8.0 μm bands where UV-excited polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission produces bright, complex structures (photodissociation regions). With regard to diffuse background effects, we provide the completeness as a function of stellar magnitude and diffuse background level in graphical and tabular formats. These data are suitable for estimating completeness in the low-source-density limit in any of the four IRAC bands in GLIMPSE Catalogs and Archives and some other Spitzer IRAC programs that employ similar observational strategies and are processed by the GLIMPSE pipeline. By performing the same analysis on smoothed images we show that the point source incompleteness is primarily a consequence of structure in the diffuse background emission rather than photon noise. With regard to source confusion in the high-source-density regions of the Galactic Plane, we provide figures illustrating the 90% completeness levels as a function of point source density at each band. We caution that completeness of the GLIMPSE 360/Deep GLIMPSE Catalogs is suppressed relative to the corresponding Archives as a consequence of rejecting stars that lie in the point-spread function wings of saturated sources. This effect is minor in regions of low saturated star density, such as toward the Outer Galaxy; this effect is significant along sightlines having a high density of saturated sources, especially for Deep GLIMPSE and other programs observing closer to the Galactic center using 12 s or longer exposure times.

We present a study of the star formation (SF) region G38.9-0.4 using publicly available multiwavelength Galactic Plane surveys from ground- and space-based observatories. This region is composed of four bright mid-IR bubbles and numerous infrared dark clouds. Two bubbles, N 74 and N 75, each host a star cluster anchored by a single O9.5V star. We identified 162 young stellar objects (YSOs) and classify 54 as stage I, 7 stage II, 6 stage III, and 32 ambiguous. We do not detect the classical signposts of triggered SF, i.e., star-forming pillars or YSOs embedded within bubble rims. We conclude that feedback-triggered SF has not occurred in G38.9-0.4. The YSOs are preferentially coincident with infrared dark clouds. This leads to a strong correlation between areal YSO mass surface density and gas mass surface density with a power law slope near 1.3, which closely matches the Schmidt-Kennicutt Law. The correlation is similar inside and outside the bubbles and may mean that the SF efficiency is neither enhanced nor supressed in regions potentially influenced by stellar feedback. This suggests that gas density, regardless of how it is collected, is a more important driver of SF than stellar feedback. Larger studies should be able to quantify the fraction of all SF that is feedback-triggered by determining the fraction SF, feedback-compressed gas surrounding HII regions relative to that already present in molecular clouds., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 56 pages, 18 figures

We present a spectroscopic and photometric determination of the distance to the young Galactic open cluster Westerlund 2 using WFPC2 imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based optical spectroscopy. HST imaging in the F336W, F439W, F555W, and F814W filters resolved many sources previously undetected in ground-based observations and yielded photometry for 1136 stars. We identified fifteen new O-type stars, along with two probable binary systems, including MSP 188 (O3 + O5.5). We fit reddened SEDs based on the Padova isochrones to the photometric data to determine individual reddening parameters $R_{V}$ and $A_{V}$ for O-type stars in Wd2. We find average values $\langle R_{V} \rangle = 3.77 \pm 0.09$ and $\langle A_{V} \rangle = 6.51 \pm 0.38$ mag, which result in a smaller distance than most other spectroscopic and photometric studies. After a statistical distance correction accounting for close unresolved binaries (factor of 1.08), our spectroscopic and photometric data on 29 O-type stars yield that Westerlund 2 has a distance $\langle d \rangle = 4.16 \pm 0.07$ (random) $+0.26$ (systematic) kpc. The cluster's age remains poorly constrained, with an upper limit of 3 Myr. Finally, we report evidence of a faint mid-IR PAH ring surrounding the well-known binary candidate MSP~18, which appears to lie at the center of a secondary stellar grouping within Westerlund 2., 58 pages, 20 figures
