Abstract

The botanical family Cucurbitaceae includes a variety of fruit crops with global or local economic importance. How their genomes evolve and the genetic basis of diversity remain largely unexplored. In this study, we sequence the genome of the wax gourd (Benincasa hispida), which bears giant fruit up to 80 cm in length and weighing over 20 kg. Comparative analyses of six cucurbit genomes reveal that the wax gourd genome represents the most ancestral karyotype, with the predicted ancestral genome having 15 proto-chromosomes. We also resequence 146 lines of diverse germplasm and build a variation map consisting of 16 million variations. Combining population genetics and linkage mapping, we identify a number of regions/genes potentially selected during domestication and improvement, some of which likely contribute to the large fruit size in wax gourds. Our analyses of these data help to understand genome evolution and function in cucurbits.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider numerical approximations for solving the nonlinear magneto-hydrodynamical system, that couples the Navier-Stokes equations and Maxwell equations together. A challenging issue to solve this model numerically is about the time marching problem, i.e., how to develop suitable temporal discretizations for the nonlinear terms in order to preserve the energy stability at the discrete level. We solve this issue in this paper by developing a linear, fully decoupled, first order time-stepping scheme, by combining the projection method and some subtle implicit-explicit treatments for nonlinear coupling terms. We further prove that the scheme is unconditional energy stable and derive the optimal error estimates rigorously. Various numerical experiments are implemented to demonstrate the stability and the accuracy in simulating some benchmark simulations, including the Kelvin-Helmholtz shear instability and the magnetic-frozen phenomenon in the lid-driven cavity.

64. A novel energy-based phase field model for ferrodroplet deformation and breakup in a uniform magnetic field

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel, thermodynamically consistent phase field model to simulate the deformation and breakup of a ferrodroplet that is immersed in a viscous medium and subject to an applied uniform magnetic field. Instead of using the magnetic body force in the traditional Rosensweig model, the key idea of this model is to propose a new magnetic energy that enables direct effects of the magnetic field on the interface evolution. The model can thereby be derived from the variational principle via minimizing the free energy of the total system. This energy based modeling idea can be easily extended to include more external fields in a convenient and consistent way for more complicated applications involving multiple external fields. We validate the model by performing a series of numerical simulations, including the comparison with analytic solutions, the investigation of the effect of different types of magnetic fields, the dynamical behaviors of the ferrodroplet breakup under the strong magnetic field, magnetic/velocity/pressure field distributions, the magnetic energy density, and the inertial phenomenon, etc., Comment: We recently found there are some essential defects about the model and need time to reconsider the modeling

Abstract

Organic p‐type cathodes have captured increasing attention for lithium‐organic batteries due to their high voltage output. However, because of the low electronic and ionic conductivity, the p‐type organic electrode materials often show sluggish reaction kinetics and hence low capacities and poor cyclability. In this work, three conjugated polymers (Pz‐TPPO, Pz‐TPPS, and Pz‐TPP) based on p‐type phenazine linked with triphenyl phosphine are reported with different chemical modifications of phosphorus atom. Through oxidation and sulfuration of phosphorus atoms, the electron‐accepting property strength is increased, resulting in higher electronic conductivity of Pz‐TPPO and Pz‐TPPS. It is also found that the P═O unit in Pz‐TPPO exhibits stronger Li+ coordination, which can bring anions into close proximity to the redox centers, further improving the anion shuttling during charge and discharge. All these lead to the best lithium‐organic battery performance of Pz‐TPPO, such as high voltage output (3.1–3.9 V), high reversible specific capacity (149 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1) and excellent cycle stability. The potential application has also been demonstrated in Pz‐TPPO//graphite full battery. 90. Modified Viologen- and Carbonylpyridinium-Based Electrodes for Organic Batteries

Abstract

Efficient electrochemical energy storage has been identified as one of the most pressing needs for a sustainable energy economy. Inorganic battery materials have traditionally been the center of attention, with the current state-of-the-art device being the lithium-ion battery. Recent pursuits have led to organic materials for their beneficial chemistry and properties, but suitable materials for organic batteries are still few and far between. This Spotlight on Applications highlights two intriguing pyridinium-based organic materials, modified viologens and carbonylpyridiniums, that have both been successfully employed in electrode materials for solid-state Li-ion-type organic batteries (LOBs). We first provide an overview of the inherent electronic properties of each building block and how they can effectively be modified while maintaining or enhancing their desirable electrochemical properties for practical applications. We then describe a range of different material designs for a battery context and their application in various organic device settings, with some examples showing competitive performance with traditional Li-ion batteries.

Abstract

Beneficial interactions with microorganisms are pivotal for crop performance and resilience. However, it remains unclear how heritable the microbiome is with respect to the host plant genotype and to what extent host genetic mechanisms can modulate plant–microbiota interactions in the face of environmental stresses. Here we surveyed 3,168 root and rhizosphere microbiome samples from 129 accessions of locally adapted Zea, sourced from diverse habitats and grown under control and different stress conditions. We quantified stress treatment and host genotype effects on the microbiome. Plant genotype and source environment were predictive of microbiome abundance. Genome-wide association analysis identified host genetic variants linked to both rhizosphere microbiome abundance and source environment. We identified transposon insertions in a candidate gene linked to both the abundance of a keystone bacterium Massilia in our controlled experiments and total soil nitrogen in the source environment. Isolation and controlled inoculation of Massilia alone can contribute to root development, whole-plant biomass production and adaptation to low nitrogen availability. We conclude that locally adapted maize varieties exert patterns of genetic control on their root and rhizosphere microbiomes that follow variation in their home environments, consistent with a role in tolerance to prevailing stress.

Abstract

The maize root system has been reshaped by indirect selection during global adaptation to new agricultural environments. In this study, we characterized the root systems of more than 9,000 global maize accessions and its wild relatives, defining the geographical signature and genomic basis of variation in seminal root number. We demonstrate that seminal root number has increased during maize domestication followed by a decrease in response to limited water availability in locally adapted varieties. By combining environmental and phenotypic association analyses with linkage mapping, we identified genes linking environmental variation and seminal root number. Functional characterization of the transcription factor ZmHb77 and in silico root modeling provides evidence that reshaping root system architecture by reducing the number of seminal roots and promoting lateral root density is beneficial for the resilience of maize seedlings to drought.

Abstract

In the context of the advancing construction engineering field in China, there has been a significant increase in the adoption of building information modeling (BIM) technology within engineering–procurement–construction (EPC) projects. This emerging technology is expected to significantly influence the decision‐making practices of professionals in the construction and engineering domain. Consequently, there is an urgent need for comprehensive research focused on construction management specifically pertaining to the effectiveness of construction developer management. This study examines seven representative EPC projects where BIM technology was implemented and it considers various factors that have the potential to influence project decision‐making while taking into account time and cost considerations. A comprehensive multidimensional evaluation method that combines the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is introduced in this study. The results of this study emphasize that the efficiency enhancement strategies derived from the judgment indicator method demonstrate favorable practical outcomes. This research highlights the importance of a comprehensive evaluation method combining the AHP and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to enhance decision‐making efficiency for construction developer management staff.
