Abstract

Porous diaphragm syndrome describes a defect in the diaphragm in which substances pass from the peritoneal cavity to the pleural space. Defects may be congenital or acquired. Acquired defects are caused by the thinning and eventual splitting of collagen fibres in the tendinous part of the diaphragm. We report a case of porous diaphragm syndrome with recurrent thymoma that presented with massive ascites. Increasing intra‐abdominal pressure by ascites and diaphragmatic thinning due to malnutrition by malignancies resulted in the formation of an artificial hole. Thoracentesis changed the balance of hydrostatic pressure, which initiated the influx of a large volume of ascites to the pleural cavity through a hole in the diaphragm.

56. Pleistocene non-passeriform landbirds from Shiriya, northeast Japan

Abstract

Located on the eastern margin of Eurasia, the Japanese Archipelago hosts a unique modern fauna of terrestrial vertebrates including landbirds which show a high proportion of endemic species/subspecies. Despite its potential importance in taxonomy and biogeography, the Pleistocene landbird fossil record has been scarce on Japanese islands, providing little information on the history of the unique fauna in the region. In this study, fossil remains of non-passeriform landbirds from the Middle–Late Pleistocene (Marine Isotope Stages [MIS] 9 and 5e) of Shiriya, northernmost Honshu Island, Japan, are revised with extensive osteological comparisons. As a result, the presence of at least six non-passeriform landbird species, represented by 71 specimens, was confirmed: Syrmaticus sp., Coturnicini gen. et sp. indet., Columbidae gen. et sp. indet., Apus sp., Haliaeetus sp., and Accipitridae gen. et sp. indet. The Shiriya paleoavifauna is the first substantial Pleistocene landbird fauna reported from the central Japanese islands so far, and suggests that the overall landbird fauna in northern Honshu in the last interglacial period (MIS 5e) was not drastically different from the present one, in contrast to the presence of several extinct land mammals and seabirds in the local fauna. The occurrence of Syrmaticus despite the supposedly colder climate in that time than today suggests that the distribution of modern S. soemmerringii might not be totally defined by climatic factors, but probably affected by a biogeographic barrier at the strait between Honshu and Hokkaido islands.

Abstract

Despite increasing attention to geologically recent extinctions in the ocean, little information is available on natural distributions of extinct species before contact with humans. In the North Pacific, a large cormorant, Phalacrocorax perspicillatus (Spectacled/Pallas's Cormorant), was driven to extinction in the 19th century, probably due to overexploitation by humans. So far, no clear evidence has existed for the past presence of the cormorant species outside Bering Island, Commander Islands. We report fossil remains of P. perspicillatus from the upper Pleistocene (Marine Isotope Stage 5e, ∼120, 000 yr ago) of Shiriya, northeast Japan. The occurrence is the first definitive record of the species outside Bering Island, and the first pre-Holocene record for the species, expanding the known geographic and temporal ranges of the species by ∼2, 400 km and ∼120, 000 yr, respectively. It indicates that the species had undergone a drastic range contraction or shift since the Pleistocene, probably before the first contact with humans. Available evidence indicates a drop of oceanic productivity near Shiriya in the Last Glacial Maximum (∼17, 000 yr ago), which might have affected the local population of the cormorant species and possibly led to the species' local disappearance from this area. In any case, the population of P. perspicillatus on Bering Island at its first scientific discovery should be considered a relict.

Abstract

Abstract Background In order to understand microarray data reasonably in the context of other existing biological knowledge, it is necessary to conduct a thorough examination of the data utilizing every aspect of available omic knowledge libraries. So far, a number of bioinformatics tools have been developed. However, each of them is restricted to deal with one type of omic knowledge, e.g., pathways, interactions or gene ontology. Now that the varieties of omic knowledge are expanding, analysis tools need a way to deal with any type of omic knowledge. Hence, we have designed the Omic Space Markup Language (OSML) that can represent a wide range of omic knowledge, and also, we have developed a tool named GSCope3, which can statistically analyze microarray data in comparison with the OSML-formatted omic knowledge data. Results In order to test the applicability of OSML to represent a variety of omic knowledge specifically useful for analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana microarray data, we have constructed a Biological Knowledge Library (BiKLi) by converting eight different types of omic knowledge into OSML-formatted datasets. We applied GSCope3 and BiKLi to previously reported A. thaliana microarray data, so as to extract any additional insights from the data. As a result, we have discovered a new insight that lignin formation resists drought stress and activates transcription of many water channel genes to oppose drought stress; and most of the 20S proteasome subunit genes show similar expression profiles under drought stress. In addition to this novel discovery, similar findings previously reported were also quickly confirmed using GSCope3 and BiKLi. Conclusion GSCope3 can statistically analyze microarray data in the context of any OSML-represented omic knowledge. OSML is not restricted to a specific data type structure, but it can represent a wide range of omic knowledge. It allows us to convert new types of omic knowledge into datasets that can be used for microarray data analysis with GSCope3. In addition to BiKLi, by collecting various types of omic knowledge as OSML libraries, it becomes possible for us to conduct detailed thorough analysis from various biological viewpoints. Abstract

Seabirds are higher-order predators in the marine ecosystem and hence good indicators of the marine environment. Although the North Pacific has been the focal area for investigations of seabird faunal dynamics, the Pleistocene seabird fossil record has been scarce in the western North Pacific. Here, remains of 32 species of seabirds and related taxa (Anatidae, Podicipedidae, Gaviidae, Diomedeidae, Hydrobatidae, Procellariidae, Phalacrocoracidae, Scolopacidae, Laridae, and Alcidae) are reported from the middle–late Pleistocene Shiriya local fauna, northeastern Japan (Marine Isotope Stages 9 and 5e, ~ 320 and ~ 120 ka). This is the first substantial Pleistocene seabird fauna reported from the region so far, and includes globally first fossil records for Cepphus carbo and extant species of Aethia. The fauna also includes three extinct species, Shiriyanetta hasegawai, Mancalla? sp., and Uria onoi, the former two of which were flightless. The occurrence of immature individuals indicates that at least two species had nearby breeding sites. The seabird populations had probably been sustained by enhanced oceanic productivity in this area during their age, but oceanographic fluctuations in the subsequent glacial period, including the probable disappearance of a nearby oceanic front, would have seriously affected their subsistence, likely causing local extinctions of some species. Abstract

A new species of the fossil murine rodent of the genus Rattus is described by comparing with the living endemic species of Diplothrix legata on the islands of Okinawa and Amamioshima. The murine fossil specimens aged as the later part of Pleistocene were excavated from the Pinza-Ave cave, the Miyako Island of the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan in 1983., 齧歯目ネズミ科ネズミ亜科のRattus属の化石新種を記載した. 記載に当たっては沖縄島と奄美大島産の現生固有種であるケナガネズミDiplothrix legataと比較した. このネズミ亜科化石は1983年に琉球列島宮古島のピンザアブ洞窟から発掘され, 更新世後期とされるものである.

75. Two species of Uria (Aves: Alcidae) from the Pleistocene of Shiriya, northeast Japan, with description and body mass estimation of a new species

Abstract

The genus Uria includes volant wing-propelled diving birds widely distributed in the Arctic and boreal waters in the Northern Hemisphere. It includes two Recent species, U. lomvia and U. aalge, which represent the largest living members of Alcidae, all of which are volant. Compared to other parts of its current distribution, the fossil record of the genus is scarce in the western North Pacific. In this report, two species of Uria, extant U. lomvia and extinct U. onoi, sp. nov., are reported from the middle–upper Pleistocene of Shiriya, northeast Japan. U. onoi is represented by several isolated fossil bones including nearly complete humeri, whose length and stoutness greatly exceed those of Recent species. Body mass estimation based on a scaling relationship of body mass and humerus length in volant alcids resulted in an estimate of ~1.5 kg for the body mass of U. onoi. This value, as well as those previously estimated for several extinct Alca spp. from the Atlantic, exceeds a commonly supposed "upper limit" of body mass attainable by volant wing-propelled diving birds, ~1 kg. These examples indicate that independent evolutions and extinctions of large-bodied species took place in two different lineages of Alcidae and in two major oceans, Alca in the Atlantic and Uria in the Pacific, and demonstrate the importance of incorporating extinct taxa in analyses of evolutionary patterns and morphological diversities.

31歳男。13歳時に野球の捕手をしており, 陰部に数回ボールが当たった後に両側陰嚢の無痛性腫大を認め, 徐々に増大したが受診していなかった。陰嚢は両側とも小児頭大で, 陰茎は埋没していたが身体所見に異常は認めなかった。CTにより陰嚢内に液体の貯留を認め, 右は11.1×9.1×15cmで左は16.2×10.3×15cmで固有鞘膜の一部は石灰化を伴っていた。精巣, 陰茎に異常は認めず, 末梢血, 血液検査においても異常値は認めず, 精巣腫瘍関連マーカーは正常値を示した。以上より, 外傷性両側陰嚢水腫と診断して両側陰嚢水腫根治術を施行した。陰嚢内容液は黄色透明で右1050ml, 左645mlで, 鼠径ヘルニアの合併症は認めなかった。病理所見では, 切除した固有鞘膜は炎症所見のみで悪性像はなく, 内容液の細胞診は陰性であったが, コレステリン結晶を含んでいた。術後, 陰嚢内に留置したドレンチューブの抜去後に血腫が貯留したため, 血腫除去を2回行った。経過は良好で, 術後8ヵ月で再発は認めず, 通院は終了とした。, Bilateral giant hydrocele in an adult is a rare clinical entity. A 31-year-old man presented with painless bilateral scrotal swelling that had appeared at age 13 years and had increased very slowly since. Computed tomography and ultrasonography revealed collection of fluid on both sides of the scrotum. Giant scrotal hydrocele were diagnosed, and surgical excision was performed. The fluid volume was 1, 050 ml in right, 645 ml in left. No inguinal hernia was found. Pathologic examination of the resected portion of the tunica vaginalis testis revealed inflammatory changes, and fluid cytology was negative. Eight months has passed, and there has been no evidence of recurrence.

85. Giant prostate carcinoma treated effectively with endocrine therapy: case report

Abstract

86歳男。尿閉を来たし, 下腹部に巨大腫瘤を指摘された。CT・MRIで前立腺から連続性のある巨大腫瘤を認め, 大きさは14.1×10.3×14.0cmであった。検査所見で血清PSA値は960ng/mlと高値で, 経皮的針生検を施行したところ, すべての検体から中分化型前立腺癌を認め, Gleason scoreは4+4であった。他臓器に異常所見は認めず, 原発性前立腺癌, T4N0M0, TNM分類stage IVと診断し, Goserelin acetate 3.5mg/月とBicalutamide 80mg/日併用のCombined androgen blockade(CAB)療法を開始した。トランスアミナーゼの上昇でBicalutamideを中止してグルタチオンの内服を行い, トランスアミナーゼ正常化後はChlormadinone acetate 100mg/日に変更してCAB療法を継続したが, 副作用は認めなかった。その後Naftopidil 50mg/日の内服を開始し, 自立排尿が可能となったため退院した。血清PSAは治療開始1ヵ月後に57ng/ml, 3ヵ月後には0.6ng/mlとなり, CT上腫瘤は著明に縮小した。1年経過して再燃はない。, An 87-year-old man visited our hospital, complaining of abdominal distention and inability to urinate. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a giant prostate tumor. The patient underwent percutaneous tumor biopsies. The histologic diagnosis was moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of prostate. The clinical stage according to the TNM classification system was T4N0M0, stage IV. Combined androgen blockade therapy was performed. Four months later, CT showed that the tumor had decreased markedly in size, and the serum prostate specific antigen level was within normal range. Hormone refractory prostate cancer was not found 1 year after the start of treatment.

Abstract

Disseminated carcinomatosis of the bone marrow (DCBM) is diffusely invasive bone metastasis resulting from solid tumors. DCBM is often associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) or hemolytic anemia. Generally, DCBM treatment includes cytotoxic chemotherapy for underlying solid tumors and management of hematological conditions if present. We report a case of DCBM accompanied with DIC in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Due to her life-threatening condition, we used hormone therapies, not cytotoxic chemotherapies, to treat her DCBM. With zoledronic acid, her DIC and general condition gradually improved and eventually she could return to her daily life. If DCBM occurs in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, hormone therapy can be one of the treatment choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A total of 680 isolated molars and three lower jaws with molars aged as of the late Pleistocene (25,800±900 y.B.P. and 26,800±1,300 y.B.P.) were recovered from the Pinza-Abu Cave, Miyako Island, the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, in 1982-83. All fossil molars with a prismatic enamel pattern are rootless. Among them 82 specimens of the first lower molars were identified as Microtus Fortis, five ones as M. oeconomus, and seven unidentified first lower molars were recorded. Without being assigned to genus, 74 specimens of the third upper molars have an intermediate form with four internal salient angles and with open dentine spaces between the first and second triangles following the anterior loop. Two speciments of the second upper molars were identified as M. oeconomus because of the occurrence of an additional reentrant fold in the second external closed triangles. The discovery of the fossil from the Miyako Island indicates the most southern distribution of M. fortis and M. oeconomus in the late Pleistocene, and disagrees with paleobotany and paleogeography previously reported., 琉球列島の宮古島のピンザアブ洞穴で、後期更新世(25,800±900y.B.P.と26,800±1,300y.B.P.)と判定された、680個の遊離臼歯と臼歯のついた3個の下顎骨が1982-83年に発掘された。化石臼歯はプリズム型のエナメル質をもち無根歯であった。82個の下顎第一臼歯のうち、70個はMicrotus fortis、5個はM. oeconomusと同定され、ほかに7個の特徴を記載した。74個の上顎第三臼歯には、下側に4個の凸角をもち前環うしろの第一と第二のエナメル三角形の象牙質が連合していたが、属の同定には至らなかった。2個の上顎第二臼歯には第二番目の閉鎖三角形の頬側に凹角がみられたので、M. oeconomusと同定された。宮古島での後期更新世のM. fortisとM. oeconomusの化石臼歯の発見は、今まで報告されていた古地理学や古植物学の見地とはことなっていた。

Abstract

A tooth described herein represents the first discovery of an indisputable theropod, in Japan in 1979, which has been followed by late discoveries of dinosaurs in Kyushu and other parts of Japan. The tooth is uniquely characterised by an elongated but very thin crown, which suggests an as yet unrecognized group of theropods.

Abstract

We have purified a novel immunoregulatory factor (BMPG: bone-marrow proteoglycan) produced by a T-cell hybridoma, with a monoclonal antibody column. Using an oligonucleotide probe corresponding to the partial amino acid sequence of BMPG, we cloned, sequenced, and expressed a cDNA for BMPG. BMPG has 222 amino acid residues with a 16 N-terminal signal sequence, so the mature form has 206 amino acid residues. BMPG was found to have unique characteristics: it has three types of sugar chains and it shows a marked homology with animal lectins including the human asialoglycoprotein receptor, chicken hepatic lectin and the homing receptor of lymphocytes.
