In this article, research by Stoeber, Harvey, Almeida and Lyons (2013) was replicated and extended by investigating the relationships between the four forms of multidimensional sexual perfectionism (self-oriented, partner-oriented, partner-prescribed and socially prescribed) and sexual anxiety, sexual problem self-blame, sexual esteem, and male and female sexual function in a combined sample of university students and internet users. All relationships were investigated cross-sectionally and over a 12-week time interval. Participants completed measures of multidimensional sexual perfectionism (self-oriented, partner-oriented, partner-prescribed and socially prescribed), sexual anxiety, sexual problem self-blame, sexual esteem, and male or female sexual function at Time 1 (n = 464) and Time 2 (n = 213). Consistent with Stoeber et al.’s (2013) findings, results revealed unique patterns of relationships for the four forms of sexual perfectionism and sexual anxiety, sexual problem self-blame, and sexual esteem. Furthermore, unique patterns of relationships were observed between the four forms of sexual perfectionism and aspects of female sexual function. All findings provide further support for Stoeber et al.’s observation that some forms of sexual perfectionism are more adaptive than others. Importantly, partner-prescribed sexual perfectionism emerged as the most maladaptive form, predicting longitudinal increases in sexual anxiety and longitudinal decreases in sexual esteem in women. Furthermore, it predicted longitudinal decreases in male and female sexual function suggesting partner-prescribed sexual perfectionism is an important personality characteristic that contributes to lower levels of sexual function, warranting further research. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.

Continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVADs) have become the standard of care for patients with end-stage heart failure (HF). While these devices have improved durability compared to earlier generation left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), increased frequency in some complications has been seen, including gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB), pump thrombosis and hemolysis. We discuss the incidence, management and prevention of GIB after CF-LVAD implantation.We reviewed the current literature available on the incidence, management and prevention of GIB after CF-LVAD implantation with a focus on our experience at the University of Minnesota, with data on nearly 300 patients who received a CF-LVAD from 2005 to 2013.The incidence of GIB after CF-LVAD varies between 18-40% in numerous studies. At the University of Minnesota, out of 233 patients who underwent HeartMate II (HMII) implantation between 2005-2013, 60 GIB episodes occurred in 51 patients (22%), with an event rate of 0.17 gastrointestinal bleeds/patient-year of support. The etiology of GIB appears to be multifactorial. The main factors which have been identified include the need for chronic anticoagulation, acquired von Willebrand syndrome, platelet dysfunction and increased incidence of arteriovenous malformations due to chronic low pulse pressure. When managing an LVAD patient with GIB, a multi-disciplinary approach is needed. The main goals of treatment are evaluating the location and severity of the bleed, holding anti-coagulants and resuscitation to maintain stable hemodynamics.GIB is a complication with considerable morbidity. Future efforts to further understand the etiology of GIB and optimize anti-coagulation are needed to improve outcomes following CF-LVAD implantation.

This thesis examines how a diverse group of participants in England make sense of condom use, exploring how talk about condoms relates to the operation of and resistance to social inequalities, and examining how public health discourse is taken up and reformulated in everyday talk about sex. It takes a feminist, discursive rhetorical approach, combining this with an exploration of how particular discourses about condom use can be understood to be ideological. The thesis draws on data from surveys, interviews and a media case study of The Jeremy Kyle Show: situating a fine-grained analysis of the discursive construction of condom lise within the context of a broader understanding of the operation of power in the everyday. In addition, the work develops the use of private diaries as a tool for interview research about intimate life. \ud The research explores how talk about condom use can work to construct subjects, developing the concept 'safer sexual subjectivity'. The discursive construction of ' safer subjects' was found to work in complex ways with existing social categories such as 'race', class and gender, with particular subjects marked as more 'risky' than others. Talk about condom use reproduced, resisted and reworked norms of gender, sex and relationships. New norDis of gendered responsibility positioned skillful condom use as a strategy of selfcare and regulation of neoliberal sexual subjectivity. Public health discourse was taken up and reworked by participants, producing new forms of intimacy and desire. \ud The thesis concludes that the negotiation of condom use is not simply an in the moment activity that happens during sex, or a 'healthy choice' made by rational actors. Talk about condom use serves rhetorical purposes in positioning people and communities, categorising relationships and developing norms about sexual practices and gender identities.

What is sexting? Sexting has been defined as the “exchange of sexual messages or images” and “creating, sharing and forwarding sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images” (see report for references). Aim of the study In this study, the researchers listened to young people's views and experiences to gain an understanding of how sexually explicit texts and images are produced, circulated and used through mobile phones and the internet and how these practices shape the offline lives of young people. Methodology The researchers conducted focus groups with 35 young people aged 12 to 14 years from inner city London schools. Participants were asked to become friends with the research team on Facebook so their activities online could be mapped. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 22 of the focus group participants as well as with 4 teachers and 4 school support staff. Key messages The findings reveal that sexting does not refer to a single activity but covers a range of activities experienced by young people. The top messages from the research are: •the primary technology-related threat comes from peers, not 'stranger danger' •sexting is often coercive •girls are the most adversely affected •technology amplifies the problem by facilitating the objectification of girls •sexting reveals wider sexual pressures •ever younger children are affected •sexting practices are culturally specific •more support and resources are vital to redress the gendered sexual pressures on young people. The research also sets out recommendations for schools, parents, internet service and site providers, child welfare professionals and future research.
