Abstract

This study investigates the academic outcomes of a special education student cohort in the state of Indiana placed in high and low inclusion settings. Student scores in these two settings from the Indiana State Test of Educational Progress (ISTEP+ English/Language Arts and math) were compared from fourth grade in 2014 through the eighth grade in 2018. Results of this study show that students with disabilities who spent 80% or more of their time in a general education inclusive classroom did significantly better in both reading and math assessment than their peers who spent more time in separate special education classrooms.

Abstract

High-field terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is applied to nonlinearly excite the E phonon-polariton vibrational coordinate in LiNbO3. We compare three THz sources to show that by optimizing the THz waveform, we can drive the atomic motion to large amplitudes and observe nonlinear effects. To maximize the atomic displacement, we show that the spectral amplitude at the resonant frequency of the mode (3.8 THz) is more important than the THz peak electric-field strength. Z-scan and simple 2-dimensional (2D) THz pulse-shaping measurements confirm this. In addition to the effects of an anharmonic potential energy surface that can describe the nonlinear behavior of the excited mode, we also consider a 2-photon absorption mechanism that may be a competing nonlinear excitation pathway. We consider the effects of each model on the observed responses in single-pulse power-dependent measurements, z-scan measurements, and simple 2D measurements, providing important guidance for future measurements to experimentally investigate nonlinear vibrational excitation in solid materials. Abstract

Libraries have a special obligation to provide educational opportunity to all segments of the population, especially the disadvantaged and minority groups. Libraries have made some progress in this mission, but it is important to organize to continue work. Libraries should seek systematic participation of schools in joint programs, encourage the use and development of multiethnic books and work to be more responsive to the needs of ethnic groups in their communities. Libraries are in a unique position to work for and bring about desirable social change. (KB)

Major social institutions repeatedly reinforce the deprivation of the urban disadvantaged. Libraries, as the "Universities of the People," must commit themselves to the promotion of a better standard of life for all people, especially the poor. A close look at priorities is especially important if libraries are to pursue their mission in a time of financial austerity. A library should be responsive to the needs of its particular community. A possible alternative to closing branch libraries is to provide equality but not uniformity of service in all parts of a city. (KB)

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Most studies on secular trends in body mass index (BMI) are cross-sectional and the few longitudinal studies have typically only investigated changes over time in mean BMI trajectories. We aimed to describe how the evolution of the obesity epidemic in Great Britain reflects shifts in the proportion of the population demonstrating different latent patterns of childhood-to-adulthood BMI development. METHODS: We used pooled serial BMI data from 25,655 participants in three British cohorts: the 1946 National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD), 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS), and 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS). Sex-specific growth mixture models captured latent patterns of BMI development between 11 and 42 years. The classes were characterised in terms of their birth cohort composition. RESULTS: The best models had four classes, broadly similar for both sexes. The 'lowest' class (57% of males; 47% of females) represents the normal weight sub-population, the 'middle' class (16%; 15%) represents the sub-population who likely develop overweight in early/mid-adulthood, and the 'highest' class (6%; 9%) represents those who likely develop obesity in early/mid-adulthood. The remaining class (21%; 29%) reflects a sub-population with rapidly 'increasing' BMI between 11 and 42 years. Both sexes in the 1958 NCDS had greater odds of being in the 'highest' class compared to their peers in the 1946 NSHD but did not have greater odds of being in the 'increasing' class. Conversely, males and females in the 1970 BCS had 2.78 (2.15, 3.60) and 1.87 (1.53, 2.28), respectively, times higher odds of being in the 'increasing' class. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the obesity epidemic in Great Britain reflects not only an upward shift in BMI trajectories but also a more recent increase in the number of individuals demonstrating more rapid weight gain, from normal weight to overweight, across the second, third, and fourth decades of life.

Abstract

Genomics-driven discovery of microbial species have provided extraordinary insights into the biodiversity of human microbiota. High resolution genomics to investigate species- and strain-level diversity and mechanistic studies, however, rely on the availability of individual microbes from a complex microbial consortia. Here, we describe and validate a streamlined workflow for cultivating microbes from the skin, oral, and gut microbiota, informed by metagenomic sequencing, mass spectrometry, and strain profiling.
