Abstract

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a small molecule glycerophospholipid, which regulates multiple downstream signalling pathways through G-protein-coupled receptors to achieve numerous functions on oocyte maturation and embryo development. In this study, sheep in vitro fertilized embryos were applied to investigate the effects of LPA on early embryos development and embryonic stem cell establishment. At first, the maturation medium containing estrus female sheep serum and synthetic oviduct fluid (SOF) were optimized for sheep IVF, and then the effects of LPA were investigated. Abstract

Quantum antiferromagnets are of broad interest in condensed matter physics as they provide a platform for studying exotic many-body states including spin liquids and high-temperature superconductors. Here, we report on the creation of a one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ultracold bosons. In a two-component Bose-Hubbard system, we switch the sign of the spin-exchange interaction and realize the isotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in an extended 70-site chain. Starting from a low-entropy N\'eel-ordered state, we use optimized adiabatic passage to approach the bosonic antiferromagnet. We demonstrate the establishment of antiferromagnetism by probing the evolution of the staggered magnetization and spin correlations of the system. Compared with condensed matter systems, ultracold gases in optical lattices can be microscopically engineered and measured, offering significant advantages for exploring bosonic magnetism and spin dynamics.

81. Corporate tax management behaviours during initial public offerings process : evidence from UK IPOs

Abstract

This study investigates tax management behaviours of companies listed on London Stock Exchange by IPOs during 2004 to 2018. It is found that in the IPO process corporate tax management behaviours have significant change, companies consider tax structure in the process of going public. There is evidence that with additional scrutiny prior to IPO companies settle outstanding or disputed tax liabilities with the relevant tax administration. In addition, with enhanced scrutiny in the IPO year and the second year after going public companies have higher tax charge. There is also evidence that in the year immediately prior to IPO and the year immediately after IPO companies engage in more tax management to reduce tax charge. In the year of going public companies defer a higher amount of tax liabilities to the future. The further analysis finds that corporate tax management behaviours are different between pre and post 2008 Banking Crisis, Main Market and Alternative Investment Market (AIM). In addition, corporate tax management behaviours during the IPO process vary by auditor change. The finding is robust to currency transition, proxy of tax loss carry-forwards and inclusion of company year ends with tax credits. The study contributes to the literature on tax management and management behaviours in IPO process. A significant contribution on methodology is developing a more accurate measure of tax management - ETRs standardised by statutory tax rate. The findings call for increased effort of the government and tax authorities on tax collection for IPO companies and enhanced scrutiny on IPO companies from market regulators, suggest market investors consider tax risks in evaluating firm value. It provides the evidence that investing in Main Market is less risky than AIM. The information of auditor change is useful in tax management identification.

98. Electro-Assisted Fe3+/Persulfate System for the Degradation of Bezafibrate in Water: Kinetics, Degradation Mechanism, and Toxicity

Abstract

In this study, an electrochemical-assisted ferric ion/persulfate (EC/Fe3+/PS) process was proposed to degrade bezafibrate (BZF), a widespread hypolipidemic drug, in water. By promoting the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ at the cathode, the introduction of an electric field successfully overcomes the limitation of non-regenerable Fe2+ inherent in Fe2+/PS systems, significantly improving the degradation efficiency of BZF. The predominant reactive species identified were •OH and SO4●−, with 1O2 also playing a role. Various key operational parameters were investigated and optimized, including the current intensity, Fe3+ dosage, PS concentration, and initial pH. With a current intensity of 50 mA, an Fe3+ concentration of 50 μΜ, a PS dosage of 50 μM, and an initial pH of 3, the degradation efficiency of BZF demonstrated an exceptional achievement, reaching up to 98.8% within 30 min. The influence of anions and humic acid was also assessed. An LC/TOF/MS analysis revealed four major degradation pathways of BZF: hydroxylation, amino bond cleavage, dechlorination, and fibrate chain removal. The acute and chronic toxicities of BZF and its degradation intermediates were then assessed using the ECOSAR program. These findings highlight the wide-ranging applications of the EC/Fe3+/PS system and its potential for remediating water contaminated with micropollutants.

99. Realizing robust edge-to-edge transport of atomic momentum states in a dynamically modulated synthetic lattice

Abstract

Quantum transport between distant nodes that is robust to experimental imperfections is essential for quantum information processing. Here we experimentally demonstrate efficient and robust edge-to-edge transport of atomic momentum states in a synthetic lattice of Bose-Einstein condensate, simulating a dynamically modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. This transport process relies on continuously controlling the effective nearest-neighbor couplings in the synthetic lattice, which constructs a unique chain between the left- and right-edge states. The robustness of such transport is protected by the chiral symmetry of the system, demonstrated by subjecting the lattices to coupling-strength disorders. Furthermore, we implement a splitter operation through an SSH model with a topological interface at its center. Our approach provides an efficient single operation to achieve robust momenta transport with potential applications in coherent quantum control in atom optics.
