Abstract

A study is made on the nature of sleep as a behavioral and physiological state. Operant conditioning techniques are used to produce and control behavior in sleeping adults. Techniques of continuous measurement are employed to permit recording of behavioral and physiological data in individual subjects over extended periods. Findings are reported from the following studies: pulse rate and EEG stages of sleep, duration and cycling of EEG sleep stages in normal states and after acute sleep deprivation, and behavioral discrimination of the REM phase by the sleeping subject.
