60. Consumer price evaluation strategies: Internal references, external references, and price images in consumer price perception.

Abstract

Consumers have available to them several potential strategies they might use to evaluate a given price. Research suggests they might compare an observed price to internal reference prices (IRPs) drawn from memory. Alternatively, consumers might evaluate a price relative to external reference prices (ERPs) available in the immediate environment. Finally, a consumer might use the seller's price image (PI), the overall impression that consumers form of the price level of a store, as a heuristic to evaluate prices. This paper briefly reviews previous research on these three evaluation strategies, as well as work investigating how these strategies interact with each other. Building on previous work, these insights are organized into a framework for predicting the factors likely to influence consumers' use of each of these strategies. It is argued that the selection of a price evaluation strategy will be based on the relative accessibility and perceived diagnosticity of IRPs, ERPs, and PIs, as well as the consumers' motivations and type of judgment the consumers are making. 62. Simulation and Analysis of Turbulence Profiling Neural Networks for Tomographic Layer Reconstruction and Wide Field Image Correction in Telescopes

Abstract

Light that propagates through the atmosphere is subject to phase perturbations at layers of turbulent flow. For decades, traditional adaptive optics (AO) has used a deformable mirror (DM) to correct the phase at the system pupil. Since the correction is applied at the pupil – not at the layers of turbulence – traditional AO is only valid over a field of view of a few arcseconds for visible light. To obtain wide field image correction, the phase has to be compensated for at optical conjugates to the layers themselves. Doing so with traditional AO hardware increases system cost and complexity because multiple DMs are required. This has motivated the exploration of a software-based image correction technique called multi-object image correction (MOIC). As the cost of computational power continues to improve, MOIC has the potential to become a viable option for wide field turbulence compensation. Thus, the development of simulations and algorithms at the current moment will enable software-based MOIC for a range of applications in the future. In this work, a simulation of a MOIC system is built. The simulation enables exploration of machine learning based turbulence profiling and offline tomographic layer reconstruction to further wide field image correction without a DM. Chapter 1 provides background on turbulence, AO, MOIC, and machine learning. Chapter 2 describes how Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor data can be used to measure the position of turbulence in front of the optical system. In Chapter 3, a simulation environment of an imaging system looking through a dynamic atmosphere is developed. We then present the layer signal to noise ratio (SNR) in Chapter 4 and demonstrate that it is a statistically valid metric for quantifying how difficult a layer of turbulence is to find in the atmosphere. Abstract

Presented at the HETL 2023 conference The environmental impact of the inappropriate use of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is recognised by global organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the European Union. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is one strategy to promote appropriate use of antimicrobials to minimise AMR and is a priority for the NHS to ensure sustainable prescribing. It is therefore imperative to support and empower future health care professionals by providing them with the knowledge to be leaders in the field of AMS. National consensus-based competencies for teaching AMS to undergraduate healthcare professionals in the UK were launched 2018. This generic framework includes competencies relating to specific aspects of antimicrobial prescribing, infection control and emphasizes the importance of collaborative interprofessional working. The aim of this project is to determine which AMS competencies are required to be met by student pharmacists. This pedagogic approach will provide a guiding tool for curricula development and will allow identification of gaps and strengths within the undergraduate pharmacy curriculum. To enable the development of a UK-wide national AMS competency framework specifically for student pharmacists, a working group of academics and pharmacy practitioners with expertise in AMS was set up in September 2022. The diverse background of group members allows a healthy mix of ideas with academics informing the group of what may be achievable within the constraints and professional requirements of the pharmacy curriculum, and pharmacy practitioners providing input into essential AMS competencies for early career pharmacists. Student pharmacists from a national organisation are being invited to join the group to encourage co-designing of this curriculum. Considering the UN commitment to act on global antimicrobial resistance and the NHS Sustainable Development management plan, this project is timely and of great importance to support development of future pharmacists as leaders in environmental sustainability.

69. PRESSURIZED SOLID OXIDE ELECTROLYSIS

Abstract

This work investigates high pressure solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) through fundamental thermodynamic analysis, system modeling, and experimentation with state of the art (SoA) materials and technology. Pressurized steam electrolysis can meet lifetime efficiency targets reducing the energy requirement for practical hydrogen production by 18% over non-pressurized electrolysis. A system thermoneutral point is determined to maximize lifetime fuel production and system efficiency. Operating conditions and system design tradeoffs are identified for lower cost hydrogen production. Commercial cell testing solutions meeting the demanding operating requirements of high pressure, temperature, oxidizing, and reducing environments are demonstrated for long duration with pressurized and steam conditions. Improved performance is shown with commercially manufactured cells in pressurized testing environments up to 10 barg, though these conditions are found to accelerate degradation of SoA solid oxide materials. The research presented here advances current SOE systems knowledge for renewable fuel production. The findings identify an alternative approach to solid oxide technology development for greater efficiency. Commercialization of this technology has the potential for large scale displacement of fossil fuels.

Abstract

When customers journey from a need to a purchase decision and beyond, they rarely do so alone. This article introduces the social customer journey, which extends prior perspectives on the path to purchase by explicitly integrating the important role that social others play throughout the journey. The authors highlight the importance of "traveling companions," who interact with the decision maker through one or more phases of the journey, and they argue that the social distance between the companion(s) and the decision maker is an important factor in how social influence affects that journey. They also consider customer journeys made by decision-making units consisting of multiple individuals and increasingly including artificial intelligence agents that can serve as surrogates for social others. The social customer journey concept integrates prior findings on social influences and customer journeys and highlights opportunities for new research within and across the various stages. Finally, the authors discuss several actionable marketing implications relevant to organizations' engagement in the social customer journey, including managing influencers, shaping social interactions, and deploying technologies. Hazing is prevalent among athletes joining high school, college or university teams (Allan & Madden, 2008; Hoover & Pollard, 2000) and is often associated with negative physical and psychological outcomes (Finkel, 2002; Sussberg, 2003). Yet despite these serious potential consequences few attempts have been made to develop and test theoretical models of hazing perpetration. In this study, a model of hazing perpetration founded in Social Cognitive Theory (SCT; Bandura, 1986) was developed and evaluated in a sample of 338 Canadian university varsity athletes competing in the sports of cross-country running, volleyball, basketball, soccer, hockey, football and rugby. Participants completed questionnaires assessing hazing behaviors and various personal and environmental factors. The results indicated that the majority (71%) of participants had hazed incoming rookie athletes. Further, regression analysis revealed that SCT could be used to predict hazing perpetration. Personal rookie hazing experiences were the most important predictor of veteran hazing perpetration. Other significant predictors included moral disengagement and favorable attitudes toward initiation. 79. Research capability and aspirations of antimicrobial pharmacists: survey of UKCPA pin membership

Abstract

Introduction The United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacist Association Pharmacy Infection Network (UKCPA PIN) is the community of pharmacy professionals with an interest or specialism in infection management. As we come out of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important for the leadership of UKCPA PIN to understand the current need and wishes of the community. Aim This study aimed to explore infection specialist pharmacy professionals about their research activity, experience, and perceived barriers to greater research activity. Methods An online, anonymised survey, consisting of closed and free-type open questions, was circulated to UKCPA PIN members for completion in September and October 2021 using the Google Forms platform. The questionnaire was developed and piloted amongst members of UKCPA PIN committee to identify current research activity and barriers. Responses were downloaded and underwent descriptive analysis with Microsoft Excel. This work was deemed a service evaluation and therefore did not require ethics approval. Results There were 38 responses were received from pharmacists in all 7 NHS England regions, Scotland, and Wales (6% of UKCPA PIN forum members). Pharmacy technicians were invited to participate but none did so. 13 (34%) described themselves as being actively involved in research, 13 (34%) described themselves as having done research in the past, 8 (21%) described themselves as not having the opportunity to develop research capabilities. 27 (71%) respondents had completed a postgraduate diploma, 8 (21%) had completed MSc or equivalent, 6 (16%) had completed a PhD or equivalent, 11 (29%) were Good Clinical Practice accredited and 10 (26%) had undertaken local research training. 6 (16%) were consultant pharmacists or accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as being consultant-ready, 10 (27%) were building a consultant portfolio and 15 (39%) were aspiring to build a consultant portfolio in the future. Of the 28% that were building a consultant portfolio, 6 were confident that they were already meeting the research outcomes and 4 were not. Antimicrobial pharmacists were most frequently wanting to undertake research in the areas of antimicrobial stewardship (11, 29%), antifungal stewardship (5, 13%) and allergies/penicillin delabelling (5, 13%). The greatest barriers identified were lack of time/funding (27, 71% agreed significant barrier), lack of funding for costs of undertaking research (17, 45%), lack of support with research methods (9, 24%) and lack of support with dissemination of research (9, 24%). A number of potential support options were proposed to respondents, with “Signposting resources to help you write research protocols” and “A repository of in progress antimicrobial research in the UK” being the most popular (19 and 17 respondents, respectively, described as very useful). Discussion/Conclusion There is a significant interest in research amongst antimicrobial pharmacists and scope for enhancing the contribution of pharmacists to research around antimicrobials and infectious disease. A limitation of this study was the small sample size; however, the themes provide important information for UKCPA PIN to provide support for its members.

Abstract

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) exhibit bright, broad emission features throughout the infrared with main features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3 and 12.7 μm. These bands arise from the UV excitation of PAHs and relaxation through the vibration, bending and/or stretching of the C–H and C–C bonds. This emission has been observed in multiple astronomical phenomena, including planetary nebulae, where they are believed to be formed, and star-forming regions, which has led to their use as a marker for estimating star formation rates in distant galaxies. Many of these bands are accessible from ground-based observatories, including 3.3 micron PAH feature and its associated aliphatic features at 3.4-3.6 microns. We used ground-based (Lick/FLITECAM and Keck/NIRSPEC) observations of the ~3-5 micron spectra of young planetary nebulae and nearby star-forming regions, to investigate the spatial distribution and spectral variation of PAH emission, and stratospheric (SOFIA/FLITECAM) observations to constrain the theoretical contribution of the 4.4-4.8 micron deuterated-PAH features and the weak 5.25 PAH emission feature. Studying young PNs and nearby star-forming regions with ground-based telescopes gives a unique opportunity for fully understanding PAH emission, processing and variation that can be used in interpreting the extra-galactic PAH spectra JWST will study.

Abstract

Background Engaging the public on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through effective communication methods is central to achieving ambition 9 of the UK’s 20-year vision on AMR. This project aimed to develop new visual approaches to raise awareness of AMR and urinary tract infection (UTI) prevention in the general public and identify any subsequent improvement in knowledge amongst artists. Methods An antimicrobial pharmacist and graphic designer ran a project wherein 2nd year Communication Arts BA students developed visual and communication art products for the lay public, in response to a client brief focusing on AMR in the context of preventable UTIs. Students also participated in a pre- and post-project survey (n=17 and 14, respectively) to measure knowledge and attitudes. Results A range of products including videos, podcasts, computer-games, and posters were produced. After the project, fewer students believed antibiotics were needed for sore throats, but there was no change regarding using antibiotics for other viral infections or preventing infections generally. However, there was improved knowledge of UTI prevention. Before the project 100% had heard of AMR with 70% agreeing it was one of the biggest threats to human health. After the project, 100% agreed AMR was one of the biggest threats to human health, 85.7% felt they could apply their learning to everyday life, and 100% will share their learning with others. Conclusion Collaboration with art students can generate a range of products for use across healthcare while also improving students’ knowledge of specific infections and increasing AMR awareness and advocacy.
