Abstract

Experiments were performed on transient heat transfer caused by large stepwise heat inputs to a flat plate heater. The plate is 6 mm-wide and located in the middle of the inner bottom wall of a horizontal rectangular duct which has 3 mm gap and 100 mm length. When the stepwise heat input is larger than that corresponding to the steady-state CHF (Critical Heat Flux), the quasi-steady state exists for a certain lifetime on the extrapolation of steady-state Kapitza conductance curve. Then the quasi-steady state rapidly changes to film boiling. The lifetime was systematically measured. The measurements were made for the flow velocities ranging from 0 m/s to 1.5 m/s and for the inlet liquid temperatures from 1.8 K to 2.0 K at atmosphere pressure. The results display the relationship between stepwise heat flux and lifetime. Besides, numerical analysis was performed on two-dimensional heat and fluid flow in the duct under the same conditions as the experimental ones by using the computer code based on the two fluid model and the theory of mutual friction. It is confirmed that the calculated lifetimes agree well with those measured by experiments. Abstract

The forced convection heat transfer coefficients were measured on a horizontal flat plate heater located on inner wall of a rectangular duct for pressures from 1 atm to 2.8 atm, flow velocities up to 2.1 m/s and for liquid temperatures from 1.8 to 6.5 K. Critical heat fluxes (CHFs) in He II under subcritical and supercritical pressures are higher for higher flow velocity and lower liquid temperature. In He I under supercritical pressures, there are two distinct ranges in heat transfer curves. The curve for lower heat flux range has a steeper gradient and the curve for higher heat flux has a lower gradient like film boiling regime. Abstract

Transient heat transfer caused by a large stepwise heat input to a flat plate with 10 mm in width and 40 mm in length at one end of a rectangular duct containing subcooled He II was measured at atmospheric pressure. Four types of rectangular ducts with the same inner dimensions of 10 x 40 x 100 mm³ were used. Three of them are with orifices of 9%, 25% and 50% open mouth at the center of their lengths, and the other is without orifice. Each test plate was pasted on an inner side of an end-plate made of fiber-reinforced-plastic (FRP) and the other end of the duct is open to a pool of pressurized He II. The steady-state critical heat fluxes (CHFs) on the plates are highest for the duct without orifice and are lower for the ducts with smaller orifices. The transient heat transfer for a stepwise heat input is such that the quasi-steady state exists with a certain lifetime on the extrapolation of steady-state Kapitza conductance curve and then jumps to film boiling regime. The lifetime for the duct without orifice agrees well with that predicted by the authors' theoretical correlation already given. The lifetime for a certain quasi-steady heat flux in a relatively lower range is shorter for the ducts with smaller orifices and approaches the value by the correlation with the increase in the step height. Abstract

Steady-state critical heat fluxes (CHFs) were measured on a flat plate heater located at one-end of a Gorter-Mellink duct with an orifice in subcooled He II for bulk liquid temperatures ranging from 1.8 to 2.1 K in order to clarify the effect of contraction and expansion of the heat flow. The flat plate was made of Manganin, 10 mm in width, 40 mm in length and 0.1 mm in thickness. The duct made of FRP had the length of 100 mm and had an orifice of 4.3 mm in thickness at the center of the duct. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the orifice to that of the duct was varied from 9.0% to 100%. The CHFs sharply increased, with increase in the ratio up to 50%. For the ratio larger than 50%, the increasing rate of the CHFs became smaller and the CHFs approached a constant value that corresponds to the CHFs without the orifice.
