Contains fulltext : 220431.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), BACKGROUND: Disordered thyroid hormone transport, due to mutations in the SLC16A2 gene encoding monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8), is characterised by intellectual and motor disability resulting from cerebral hypothyroidism and chronic peripheral thyrotoxicosis. We sought to systematically assess the phenotypic characteristics and natural history of patients with MCT8 deficiency. METHODS: We did an international, multicentre, cohort study, analysing retrospective data from Jan 1, 2003, to Dec 31, 2019, from patients with MCT8 deficiency followed up in 47 hospitals in 22 countries globally. The key inclusion criterion was genetically confirmed MCT8 deficiency. There were no exclusion criteria. Our primary objective was to analyse the overall survival of patients with MCT8 deficiency and document causes of death. We also compared survival between patients who did or did not attain full head control by age 1.5 years and between patients who were or were not underweight by age 1-3 years (defined as a bodyweight-for-age Z score <-2 SDs or <5th percentile according to WHO definition). Other objectives were to assess neurocognitive function and outcomes, and clinical parameters including anthropometric characteristics, biochemical markers, and neuroimaging findings. FINDINGS: Between Oct 14, 2014, and Jan 17, 2020, we enrolled 151 patients with 73 different MCT8 (SLC16A2) mutations. Median age at diagnosis was 24.0 months (IQR 12.0-60.0, range 0.0-744.0). 32 (21%) of 151 patients died; the main causes of mortality in these patients were pulmonary infection (six [19%]) and sudden death (six [19%]). Median overall survival was 35.0 years (95% CI 8.3-61.7). Individuals who did not attain head control by age 1.5 years had an increased risk of death compared with patients who did attain head control (hazard ratio [HR] 3.46, 95% CI 1.76-8.34; log-rank test p=0.0041). Abstract

The 9C breakup reaction was investigated in order to obtain information about the inverse reaction: 8B(p,γ)9C at astro-physical energies within the NP1412SAMURAI29R1 experiment. The 8B(p,γ)9C reaction gives a possible path to the hot pp chain pp-IV at high temperatures and away from it toward a rapid alpha-process rap-I at high temperatures and densities and therefore is important in understanding nucleosynthesis in super-massive hot stars in the early universe, including possible bypass of the 3α-process. For this experiment it was proposed to use a combination of nuclear and Coulomb dissociation measurements (on a light target Be or C and on a heavy target Pb, respectively) at energy of 160 A MeV to extract structure information, which will allow to evaluate the radiative proton capture cross section at low energies and from there the reaction rate. The current work is focused on the development of Monte Carlo simulations for Coulomb breakup mechanism of 9C as well as on the Geant4 simulations of the resulting particle trajectories through the experimental setup, including passage of the particles through the magnetic field of the SAMURAI spectrometer. Background: alpha-nucleus potentials play an essential role for the calculation of alpha-induced reaction cross sections at low energies in the statistical model. Uncertainties of these calculations are related to ambiguities in the adjustment of the potential parameters to experimental elastic scattering angular distributions and to the energy dependence of the effective alpha-nucleus potentials.

Abstract

Background: Astrophysical reaction rates, which are mostly derived from theoretical cross sections, are necessary input to nuclear reaction network simulations for studying the origin of p nuclei. Past experiments have found a considerable difference between theoretical and experimental cross sections in some cases, especially for (alpha,gamma) reactions at low energy. Therefore, it is important to experimentally test theoretical cross section predictions at low, astrophysically relevant energies.

Abstract

Background: The gamma process in supernova explosions is thought to explain the origin of proton-rich isotopes between Se and Hg, the so-called p nuclei. The majority of the reaction rates for gamma process reaction network studies have to be predicted in Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations using global optical potential parametrizations. While the nucleon+nucleus optical potential is fairly well known, for the alpha+nucleus optical potential several different parametrizations exist and large deviations are found between the predictions calculated using different parameter sets.

Abstract

Abstract

In order to extend the experimental database relevant for the astrophysical gamma-process towards the unexplored heavier mass region, the cross sections of the Eu-151(alpha, gamma)Tb-155 and Eu-151 (alpha, n)Tb-154 reactions have been measured at low energies between 12 and 17 MeV using the activation technique. The results are compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations and it is found that the calculations overestimate the cross sections by about a factor of 2. A sensitivity analysis shows that this discrepancy is caused by the inadequate description of the alpha+nucleus channel. A factor of 2 reduction of the reaction rate of Eu-151(alpha, gamma)Tb-155 in gamma-process network calculations with respect to theoretical rates using the optical potential by McFadden and Satchler (1966 Nucl. Phys. 84 177) is recommended.

We sought to systematically assess the phenotypic characteristics and natural history of patients with MCT8 deficiency. METHODS: We did an international, multicentre, cohort study, analysing retrospective data from Jan 1, 2003, to Dec 31, 2019, from patients with MCT8 deficiency followed up in 47 hospitals in 22 countries globally. The key inclusion criterion was genetically confirmed MCT8 deficiency. There were no exclusion criteria. Our primary objective was to analyse the overall survival of patients with MCT8 deficiency and document causes of death. 64. Calibration of micro-channel plate detector in a Thomson spectrometer for protons and carbon ions with energies below 1 MeV.

Abstract

The calibration of an ion detection system was carried out for protons and carbon ions from a few tens of keV up to about 1 MeV energies. A Thomson spectrometer deflecting the particle beam accelerated from a laser plasma creates the ion spectra on a phosphor screen behind a micro-channel plate (MCP), which are recorded by a camera. During calibration, the ion spectra simultaneously hit the slotted CR-39 track detector installed in front of the MCP and, passing through the adjacent CR-39 stripes, the MCP. The calibration provides the ratio of the interpolated values between two consecutive stripes of the camera signal and the total number of particles recorded on the corresponding stripe of CR-39. The efficiency of proton detection by CR-39 was also measured in a conventional accelerator beam and found to drop by 20% below 100 keV.

Abstract

A 33-year-old primagravida with a history of polycystic ovary syndrome was referred because of symptoms of moderate hyperandrogenism. Serum hormone levels, measured regularly from the 7th week of pregnancy until delivery, showed very high increases of testosterone, androstenedione and estradiol. Ultrasound showed no evidence of adrenal or ovarian masses. She delivered a female newborn with normal female external genitalia. Umbilical cord hormone levels were normal, except for a modest increase of serum testosterone. After delivery the androgen levels of the mother returned to normal and the symptoms of hyperandrogenism were also slightly improved.
