Highly efficient terahertz (THz) wave sources based on difference frequency generation (DFG) process in nonlinear optical crystals play an important role for the applications of THz wave. In order to find more novel nonlinear crystals, here we theoretically investigate the generation of THz wave using the isomorphs of periodically poled $\mathrm{KTiOPO_4}$ (PPKTP), including periodically poled RTP, KTA, RTA and CTA. By solving the cascaded difference frequency coupled wave equations, it is found that the intensities of the THz wave generated from the cascaded difference frequency processes are improved by 5.27, 2.87, 2.82, 3.03, and 2.76 times from the non-cascaded cases for KTP, RTP, KTA, RTA and CTA, respectively. The effects of the crystal absorption, the phase mismatch and the pump intensity are also analyzed in detail. In this paper, we develop a robust fast method for mobile-immobile variable-order (VO) time-fractional diffusion equations (tFDEs), superiorly handling the cases of small or vanishing lower bound of the VO function. The valid fast approximation of the VO Caputo fractional derivative is obtained using integration by parts and the exponential-sum-approximation method. Compared with the general direct method, the proposed algorithm ($RF$-$L1$ formula) reduces the acting memory from $\mathcal{O}(n)$ to $\mathcal{O}(\log^2 n)$ and computational cost from $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(n \log^2 n)$, respectively, where $n$ is the number of time levels. Then $RF$-$L1$ formula is applied to construct the fast finite difference scheme for the VO tFDEs, which sharp decreases the memory requirement and computational complexity. The error estimate for the proposed scheme is studied only under some assumptions of the VO function, coefficients, and the source term, but without any regularity assumption of the true solutions. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we develop a fast numerical method for solving the time-dependent Riesz space fractional diffusion equations with a nonlinear source term in the convex domain. An implicit finite difference method is employed to discretize the Riesz space fractional diffusion equations with a penalty term in a rectangular region by the volume-penalization approach. The stability and the convergence of the proposed method are studied. As the coefficient matrix is with the Toeplitz-like structure, the generalized minimum residual method with a preconditioner based on the sine transform is exploited to solve the discretized linear system, where the preconditioner is constructed in view of the combination of two approximate inverse ${\tau}$ matrices, which can be diagonalized by the sine transform. In this paper, we propose a fast second-order approximation to the variable-order (VO) Caputo fractional derivative, which is developed based on $L2$-$1_\sigma$ formula and the exponential-sum-approximation technique. The fast evaluation method can achieve the second-order accuracy and further reduce the computational cost and the acting memory for the VO Caputo fractional derivative. This fast algorithm is applied to construct a relevant fast temporal second-order and spatial fourth-order scheme ($FL2$-$1_{\sigma}$ scheme) for the multi-dimensional VO time-fractional sub-diffusion equations. Theoretically, $FL2$-$1_{\sigma}$ scheme is proved to fulfill the similar properties of the coefficients as those of the well-studied $L2$-$1_\sigma$ scheme. Therefore, $FL2$-$1_{\sigma}$ scheme is strictly proved to be unconditionally stable and convergent. A sharp decrease in the computational cost and the acting memory is shown in the numerical examples to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

In this paper, we analyze the spectra of the preconditioned matrices arising from discretized multi-dimensional Riesz spatial fractional diffusion equations. The finite difference method is employed to approximate the multi-dimensional Riesz fractional derivatives, which will generate symmetric positive definite ill-conditioned multi-level Toeplitz matrices. The preconditioned conjugate gradient method with a preconditioner based on the sine transform is employed to solve the resulting linear system. Theoretically, we prove that the spectra of the preconditioned matrices are uniformly bounded in the open interval (1/2,3/2) and thus the preconditioned conjugate gradient method converges linearly. The proposed method can be extended to multi-level Toeplitz matrices generated by functions with zeros of fractional order. Our theoretical results fill in a vacancy in the literature. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate our new theoretical results in the literature and show the convergence performance of the proposed preconditioner that is better than other existing preconditioners.

In this paper, we study the variable-order (VO) time-fractional diffusion equations. For a VO function $\alpha(t)\in(0,1)$, we develop an exponential-sum-approximation (ESA) technique to approach the VO Caputo fractional derivative. The ESA technique keeps both the quadrature exponents and the number of exponentials in the summation unchanged at the different time levels. Approximating parameters are properly selected to achieve efficient accuracy. Compared with the general direct method, the proposed method reduces the storage requirement from $\mathcal{O}(n)$ to $\mathcal{O}(\log^2 n)$ and the computational cost from $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(n\log^2 n)$, respectively, with $n$ being the number of the time levels. When this fast algorithm is exploited to construct a fast ESA scheme for the VO time-fractional diffusion equations, the computational complexity of the proposed scheme is only of $\mathcal{O}(mn\log^2 n)$ with $\mathcal{O}(m\log^2n)$ storage requirement, where $m$ denotes the number of spatial grids. Theoretically, the unconditional stability and error analysis of the fast ESA scheme are given. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by numerical examples.

The nuclides inhaled during nuclear accidents usually cause internal contamination of the lungs with low activity. Although a parallel-hole imaging system, which is widely used in medical gamma cameras, has a high resolution and good image quality, owing to its extremely low detection efficiency, it remains difficult to obtain images of inhaled lung contamination. In this study, the Monte Carlo method was used to study the internal lung contamination imaging using the MPA-MURA coded-aperture collimator. The imaging system consisted of an adult male lung model, with a mosaicked, pattern-centered, and anti-symmetric MURA coded-aperture collimator model and a CsI(Tl) detector model. The MLEM decoding algorithm was used to reconstruct the internal contamination image, and the complementary imaging method was used to reduce the number of artifacts. The full width at half maximum of the I-131 point source image reconstructed by the mosaicked, pattern-centered, and anti-symmetric Modified uniformly redundant array (MPA-MURA) coded-aperture imaging reached 2.51 mm, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the simplified respiratory tract source (I-131) image reconstructed through MPA-MURA coded-aperture imaging was 3.98 dB. Although the spatial resolution of MPA-MURA coded aperture imaging is not as good as that of parallel-hole imaging, the detection efficiency of PMA-MURA coded-aperture imaging is two orders of magnitude higher than that of parallel hole collimator imaging. Considering the low activity level of internal lung contamination caused by nuclear accidents, PMA-MURA coded-aperture imaging has significant potential for the development of lung contamination imaging.

In this paper, we develop two fast implicit difference schemes for solving a class of variable-coefficient time-space fractional diffusion equations with integral fractional Laplacian (IFL). The proposed schemes utilize the graded $L1$ formula for the Caputo fractional derivative and a special finite difference discretization for IFL, where the graded mesh can capture the model problem with a weak singularity at initial time. The stability and convergence are rigorously proved via the $M$-matrix analysis, which is from the spatial discretized matrix of IFL. Moreover, the proposed schemes use the fast sum-of-exponential approximation and Toeplitz matrix algorithms to reduce the computational cost for the nonlocal property of time and space fractional derivatives, respectively. The fast schemes greatly reduce the computational work of solving the discretized linear systems from $\mathcal{O}(MN^3 + M^2N)$ by a direct solver to $\mathcal{O}(MN(\log N + N_{exp}))$ per preconditioned Krylov subspace iteration and a memory requirement from $O(MN^2)$ to $O(NN_{exp})$, where $N$ and $(N_{exp} \ll)~M$ are the number of spatial and temporal grid nodes. The spectrum of preconditioned matrix is also given for ensuring the acceleration benefit of circulant preconditioners.
