Two-dimensional modulation in synthetic åkermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7) and hardystonite (Ca2ZnSi2O7) has been studied by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods in the temperature range between 18 and 297 K. It is found that change of the modulation wavelength Ca2MgSi2O7 is slight, but that in Ca2ZnSi2O7 it is noticeable and indicates a plateau-like temperature dependence. The plateau-like region may be regarded as an independent phase with a specific q [∼0.2924(3)]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structures of Ca2CoSi2O7, Ca2MgSi2O7, and Ca2(Mg0.55Fe0.45)Si2O7 have been determined in the temperature range between 297 and 773 K with arbitrary intervals. The structures of the incommensurate phase of the three compounds are characterized by the presence of the six-, seven-, and eight-coordinated Ca–O polyhedra and of the bundles along the c-axes consisting of four arrays of the six-coordinated Ca–O polyhedra and an array of T1O4 (T1: Co, Mg, or Mg–Fe) tetrahedra in the structures. The number of bundles in each material decreases at elevated temperatures. The incommensurate phase undergoes a phase transition into the normal phase at 493 K in Ca2CoSi2O7, at 360 K in Ca2MgSi2O7, and at 510 K in Ca2(Mg0.55Fe0.45)Si2O7. The features of the structures of the normal phase are almost the same as those found in the basic structures (the averaged structures of the incommensurate structures), and this fact implies that the characteristics of the structures, such as the six-coordinated Ca–O polyhedra or fragments of the bundles, should be partially preserved at higher temperatures both in the incommensurate structures and also in the structures of the normal phase. Analyses of anisotropic displacement parameters clarified that disorder of the modulation waves is developed in the structures at higher temperatures. The evolution of a disorder in the structures was ascertained by observation of the circular diffuse streaks in the vicinity of the transition temperature between the incommensurate and normal phases. The incommensurate structure of (Sr0.13Ca0.87)2CoSi2O7 at room temperature has been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. the compound has a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal basic cell of a = 7.8743(4) and c =5.0417(2) Å with the space group P421m. The refinements of the basic structure converged to R = 0.038 for 757 main reflection. This two dimensional incommensurate structure is characterized by the wavevectors q1 = 0.286(3)(a* + b) and q2 = 0.286(3)(-a* + B*), where a*, B* are the reciprocal lattice vectors of the basic structure. With the (3 + 2)- dimensional superspace group PP42mP4mg the refinements converged to R = 0.071 for 1697 observed reflection (757 main and 940 satellite reflection). The structure is described in terms of displacement of the atoms. rotation distortion of CoO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra, and the partial ordering of the Sr and Ca atoms accompanied with the modulation. Correlated evolution of these feature throughout the crystal gives rise to various oxygen coordination around Ca/Sr. Comparison of the derived modulated structure to that of Ca2,CoSi2O7 clarified that the partial substitution of Ca by large alkaline-earth atoms such as Sr should decrease the distortion of the polyhedra around the cations. Spermidine is an essential biomarker related to antiaging. Although the detection of spermidine levels is in high demand in life science fields, easy-to-use analytical tools without sample purification have not yet been fully established. Herein, we propose an organic field-effect transistor-based chemical sensor for quantifying the spermidine concentration in commercial cosmetics. An extended-gate structure was employed for organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based chemical sensing in aqueous media. A coordination-bond-based sensing system was introduced into the OFET device to visualize the spermidine detection information through changes in the transistor characteristics. The extended-gate-type OFET has shown quantitative responses to spermidine, which indicates sufficient detectability (i. e., the limit of detection for spermidine: 2.3 μM) considering actual concentrations in cosmetics. The applicability of the OFET-based chemical sensor for cosmetic analysis was validated by instrumental analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography. The estimated recovery rates for spermidine in cosmetic ingredient products (108-111 %) suggest the feasibility of cosmetic analysis based on the OFET-based chemical sensor., (© 2024 The Authors. The field of aging biology, which aims to extend healthy lifespans and prevent age-related diseases, has turned its focus to the Callithrix jacchus (common marmoset) to understand the aging process better. This study utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to non-invasively analyze the brains of 216 marmosets, investigating age-related changes in brain structure; the relationship between body weight and brain volume; and potential differences between males and females. The key findings revealed that, similar to humans, Callithrix jacchus experiences a reduction in total intracranial volume, cortex, subcortex, thalamus, and cingulate volumes as they age, highlighting site-dependent changes in brain tissue. Notably, the study also uncovered sex differences in cerebellar volume. These insights into the structural connectivity and volumetric changes in the marmoset brain throughout aging contribute to accumulating valuable knowledge in the field, promising to inform future aging research and interventions for enhancing healthspan., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Objective: The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between carcass unit price per 1 kg (UP) and multiple muscles and intermuscular fat (IF)/subcutaneous fat of beef carcasses using image analysis of cross-section images for Wagyu beef cattle in Japan, and to estimate their genetic parameters., Methods: The carcasses used in this study were 1,807 Japanese Black (Wagyu) cattle (1,216 steers and 591 heifers). An analysis of variance was conducted with UP as the dependent variable and market date, age in months, sex, and image analysis traits (IAT) as fixed effects, and standard partial regression coefficients were calculated for each IAT on UP. Also, the heritability of each IAT that affected UP and genetic correlation among IAT vs carcass grading traits were estimated., Results: Not only IAT related to carcass grading traits, M. trapezius dorsi, M. latissimus dorsi, and IF traits were significant differences in UP (p<0.05). The heritability of IAT associated with UP was estimated at 0.38 to 0.85. The genetic correlations between the area and thickness of M. trapezius dorsi and M. latissimus dorsi vs rib eye area (REA) were estimated to be moderately positive (0.53 to 0.66), while the genetic correlations between the IF area percentage vs carcass weight, REA, and yield score were estimated to be negative (-0.40, -0.56, and -0.34)., Conclusion: UP was influenced by various traits, including M. trapezius dorsi, M. latissimus dorsi, and IF traits, as well as image analysis associated with carcass grading traits. Since these IAT associated with UP had hereditary and desirable genetic correlations with carcass grading traits, these traits were also important for genetic improvement.

In this study, we aimed to improve current udder health genetic evaluations by addressing the limitations of monthly sampled somatic cell score (SCS) for distinguishing cows with robust innate immunity from those susceptible to chronic infections. The objectives were to (1) establish novel somatic cell traits by integrating SCS and the differential somatic cell count (DSCC), which represents the combined proportion of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and lymphocytes in somatic cells and (2) estimate genetic parameters for the new traits, including their daily heritability and genetic correlations with milk production traits and SCS, using a random regression test-day model (RRTDM). We derived 3 traits, termed ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC, SCS&#95;4&#95;DSCC&#95;65&#95;binary, and ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC&#95;binary, by using milk loss (ML) estimates at corresponding SCS and DSCC levels, thresholds established in previous studies, and a threshold established from milk loss estimates, respectively. Data consisted of test-day records collected during January 2021 through March 2022 from 265 herds in Hokkaido, Japan. From these records, we extracted records between 7 to 305 d in milk (DIM) in the first lactation to fit the RRTDM. The model included the random effect of herd-test-day, the fixed effect of year-month, fixed lactation curves nested with calving age groups, and random regressions with Legendre polynomials of order 3 for additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. The analysis was performed using Gibbs sampling with Gibbsf90+ software. The averages (ranges) of the daily heritability estimates over lactation were 0.086 (0.075-0.095) for SCS, 0.104 (0.073-0.127) for ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC, 0.137 (0.014-0.297) for SCS&#95;4&#95;DSCC&#95;65&#95;binary, and 0.138 (0.115-0.185) for ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC&#95;binary; the heritability curve for SCS&#95;4&#95;DSCC&#95;65&#95;binary was erratic. Genetic correlations within the trait decreased as the DIM interval widened, especially for those integrating DSCC, indicating that these traits should be analyzed using RRTDM rather than repeatability models. The averages (ranges) of genetic correlations with milk yield over lactation were 0.01 (-0.22 to 0.28) for SCS, -0.05 (-0.40 to 0.13) for ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC, -0.08 (-0.17 to 0.09) for SCS&#95;4&#95;DSCC&#95;65&#95;binary, and -0.08 (-0.22 to 0.27) for ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC&#95;binary. Compared with SCS, the newly defined traits exhibited slightly stronger negative genetic correlations with milk yield. Especially in late lactation stages, the genetic correlation between ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC and milk yield was significantly below zero, with a posterior median of -0.40. Furthermore, the new traits showed positive correlations with SCS, having estimates varying from 0.68 to 0.85 for ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC, 0.14 to 0.47 for SCS&#95;4&#95;DSCC&#95;65&#95;binary, and 0.61 to 0.66 for ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC&#95;binary, depending on DIM. Considering that ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC and ML&#95;SCS&#95;DSCC&#95;binary have relatively high heritability (compared with SCS) and favorable genetic correlations with milk production traits and SCS, their incorporation into breeding programs appears promising. Animal models of brain function are critical for the study of human diseases and development of effective interventions. Resting-state network (RSN) analysis is a powerful tool for evaluating brain function and performing comparisons across animal species. Several studies have reported RSNs in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus; marmoset), a non-human primate. However, it is necessary to identify RSNs and evaluate commonality and inter-individual variance through analyses using a larger amount of data. In this study, we present marmoset RSNs detected using > 100,000 time-course image volumes of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data with careful preprocessing. In addition, we extracted brain regions involved in the composition of these RSNs to understand the differences between humans and marmosets. We detected 16 RSNs in major marmosets, three of which were novel networks that have not been previously reported in marmosets. Since these RSNs possess the potential for use in the functional evaluation of neurodegenerative diseases, the data in this study will significantly contribute to the understanding of the functional effects of neurodegenerative diseases., (© 2024. Purpose: Diffusion MRI is a physical measurement method that quantitatively indicates the displacement of water molecules diffusing in voxels. However, there are insufficient data to characterize the diffusion process physically in a uniform structure such as a phantom. This study investigated the transitional relationship between structure scale, temperature, and diffusion time for simple restricted diffusion using a capillary phantom., Methods: We performed diffusion-weighted pulsed-gradient stimulated-echo acquisition mode (STEAM) MRI with a 9.4 Tesla MRI system (Bruker BioSpin, Ettlingen, Germany) and a quadrature coil with an inner diameter of 86 mm (Bruker BioSpin). We measured the diffusion coefficients (radial diffusivity [RD]) of capillary plates (pore sizes 6, 12, 25, 50, and 100 μm) with uniformly restricted structures at various temperatures (10ºC, 20ºC, 30ºC, and 40ºC) and multiple diffusion times (12-800 ms). We evaluated the characteristics of scale, temperature, and diffusion time for restricted diffusion., Results: The RD decayed and became constant depending on the structural scale. Diffusion coefficient fluctuations with temperature occurred mostly under conditions of a large structural scale and short diffusion time. We obtained data suggesting that temperature-dependent changes in the diffusion coefficients follow physical laws., Conclusion: No water molecules were observed outside the glass tubes in the capillary plates, and the capillary plates only reflected a restricted diffusion process within the structure.We experimentally evaluated the characteristics of simple restricted diffusion to reveal the transitional relationship of the diffusion coefficient with diffusion time, structure scale, and temperature through composite measurement.

In diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, oscillating gradient spin echo (OGSE) has an extremely short diffusion time if motion probing gradient (MPG) is applied to the waveform. Further, it can detect microstructural specificity. OGSE changes sensitivity to spin displacement velocity based on the MPG phase. The current study aimed to investigate the restricted diffusion characteristics of each OGSE waveform using the capillary phantom with various b-values, frequencies, and MPG phases. We performed OGSE (b-value = 300, 500, 800, 1200, 1600, and 2000 s/mm 2 ) for the sine and cosine waveforms using the capillary phantom (6, 12, 25, 50, and 100 μm and free water) with a 9.4-T experimental magnetic resonance imaging system and a solenoid coil. We evaluated the axial and radial diffusivity (AD, RD) of each structure size. The output current of the MPG was assessed with an oscilloscope and analyzed with the gradient modulation power spectra by fast Fourier transform. In sine, the sidelobe spectrum was enhanced with increasing frequency, and the central spectrum slightly increased. The difference in RD was detected at 6 and 12 μm; however, it did not depend on the structure scale at 50 or 100 μm and free water. In cosine, the diffusion spectrum was enhanced, whereas the central spectrum decreased with increasing frequency. Both AD and RD in cosine had a frequency dependence, and AD and RD increased with a higher frequency regardless of structure size. AD and RD in either sine or cosine had no evident b-value dependence. We evaluated the OGSE-restricted diffusion characteristics. The measurements obtained diffusion information similar to the pulsed gradient spin echo. We predicted the energy balance of cows from milk traits and estimated the genetic correlations of predicted energy balance (PEB) with fertility traits for the first three lactations. Data included 9,646,606 test-day records of 576,555 Holstein cows in Japan from 2015 to 2019. Genetic parameters were estimated with a multiple-trait model in which the records among lactation stages and parities were treated as separate traits. Fertility traits were conception rate at first insemination (CR), number of inseminations (NI), and days open (DO). Heritability estimates of PEB were 0.28-0.35 (first lactation), 0.15-0.29 (second), and 0.09-0.23 (third). Estimated genetic correlations among lactation stages were 0.85-1.00 (first lactation), 0.73-1.00 (second), and 0.64-1.00 (third). Estimated genetic correlations among parities were 0.82-0.96 (between first and second), 0.97-0.99 (second and third), and 0.69-0.92 (first and third). Estimated genetic correlations of PEB in early lactation with fertility were 0.04 to 0.19 for CR, -0.03 to -0.19 for NI, and -0.01 to -0.24 for DO. Genetic improvement of PEB is possible. Data from several recent studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for severe aortic stenosis (AS) even in nonagenarians. However, the impact of periprocedural bleeding following TAVI on their outcome remains unclear. In the aLliAnce for exPloring cLinical prospects of AortiC valvE disease (LAPLACE) registry, we compared outcomes between the bleeding and no-bleeding groups among 1953 patients < 90 years old (mean age, 83.0 ± 4.6 years old) and 316 nonagenarians (mean age, 91.7 ± 1.9 years old) who underwent TAVI with a median follow-up period of 628 days. The group with any periprocedural bleeding showed a higher 30-day mortality than the no-bleeding group in patients < 90 years old (3.3% vs. 0.5%, p = 0.001) and nonagenarians (7.9% vs. 0.7%, p = 0.001). In patients < 90 years old, severe periprocedural bleeding (n = 85) was associated with a higher mid-term all-cause mortality rate than no severe bleeding (n = 1,868), even after adjusting for covariates (hazard ratio [HR], 1.994; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.287-2.937; p = 0.002). On the other hand, in nonagenarians, any periprocedural bleeding (n = 38) was associated with a higher mid-term cardiovascular (CV) mortality rate (21.1% vs. 4.3%, log-rank p = 0.014) than no bleeding (n = 278), even after adjusting for covariates (HR, 3.104; 95% CI 1.140-8.449; p = 0.027). In conclusion, any periprocedural bleeding after TAVI was associated with mid-term CV mortality in nonagenarians, whereas severe bleeding was associated with mid-term all-cause mortality in patients < 90 years old., (© 2023.
