Two insecticide formulations containing the naturalyte insecticide spinosad, GF-120 Fruit Fly Bait and SpinTor 2 SC, were compared for control of apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), and blueberry maggot, Rhagoletis mendax Curran. In 2002 and 2003, larval infestation in blueberries and apples was significantly lower in plots treated with GF-120 (spinosad bait) or SpinTor than in untreated control plots. Fruit fly infestation in apples was reduced by 67% in 2002 after weekly application of GF-120 for 6 wk. Six weeks of GF-120 treatment reduced infestation in blueberries by 85% in 2002 and 98% in 2003. Plots treated weekly with the bait component of GF-120 for 6 wk had significantly higher infestation of blueberry maggot larvae compared with untreated plots in 2002. Observations of wild R. mendax flies revealed that similar numbers of flies landed on blueberry foliage treated with spinosad bait, the bait component alone, or water droplets. However, flies on spinosad bait and bait treated plants spent significantly more time within 5 cm of the treatment droplets compared with control (water) droplets. Overall, the results demonstrate a high degree of efficacy of baited spinosad formulations against these key pests of temperate fruit and suggest that GF-120 is an arrestant for foraging flies.

The obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), is one of the major arthropod pests of apple in the United States. In 1999 and 2000, a survey of the obliquebanded leafroller parasitoid complex in commercially managed apple orchards in Michigan's two largest fruit production regions was conducted to determine the species present and their importance to obliquebanded leafroller population management. In total, 8,961 obliquebanded leafroller larvae were collected of which 2,174 were parasitized. Parasitism increased from the overwintering generation to the summer generation for both regions and both years. In 1999, 11% of the 1,126 overwintering obliquebanded leafrollers collected were parasitized, whereas 28% of the 3,669 summer generation were parasitized. In 2000, 8% of the 489 overwintering obliquebanded leafrollers collected were parasitized, whereas 26% of the 3,677 summer generation obliquebanded leafrollers collected were parasitized. In total, 20 species of hymenopteran and dipteran parasitoids from seven families were recovered from obliquebanded leafroller larvae over the course of the study. The most abundant hymenopteran parasitoids were Bassus dimidiator Nees (Braconidae) comprising 48% of the total parasitoids, followed by Colpoclypeus florus (Walker) (Eulophidae) (8% of the total) and Macrocentrus linearis (Nees) (Braconidae) (2% of the total). Dipteran parasitoids (Tachinidae) accounted for 36% of the parasitism and were largely comprised of Nilea erecta (Coquillett) (5%) and Actia interrupta Curran (13%). These collections represent new host records for B. dimidiator, Bassus annulipes (Cresson) Hyphantrophaga blanda (Osten Sacken), and Compsilura concinnata (Meigen). The parasitoid C. florus is also reported from Michigan for the first time.

As measured by electroantennograms (EAG), both male and female obliquebanded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and redbanded leafrollers, Argyrotaeniavelutinana (Walker), were similarly sensitive to host-related plant volatiles: trans-2-hexenal, benzaldehyde, 1-hexenol, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, geraniol, linalool, (+)-limonene, hexenal and trans-2-hexenol. Females of both species were similarly sensitive to the shared major component of their sex-attractant pheromone ((Z)11-14:Ac). Continuous 60 min pre-exposure of male and female C. rosaceana and A. velutinana to successively higher concentrations of a mixture of the nine plant volatiles in Teflon chambers with continuous air exchange caused a dosage-dependent increase in subsequent responsiveness (sensitization) to green leaf volatiles, as measured by EAGs. In addition, 60 min of pre-exposure of male C. rosaceana to certain individual volatiles ((+)-limonene, geraniol, benzaldehyde) increased EAGs nearly as much as did the mixture of nine volatiles. Pre-exposures to the nine plant-volatile mixture at concentrations achieved by 100 microg and 1 mg loading dosages in 100 microl of mineral oil significantly increased EAG depolarization to pheromone (cross-sensitization) in males but not females of both moth species. Antennae of male C. rosaceana pre-injected with 100 microg of octopamine (OA) without volatile pre-exposure exhibited sensitization nearly identical to that induced by pre-exposing moths to sensitizing concentrations of the plant-volatile mixture. Moreover, injection of the OA antagonist chlorpromazine (CP) blocked sensitization by the plant-volatile pre-exposure. Collectively, these findings suggest that exposures of tortricid moths to certain host-plant related volatiles may modulate subsequent olfactory sensitivity to behaviorally relevant chemical cues and that plant-volatile induced sensitization may be octopamine mediated.

The density of microcapsules was compared on 'Golden Delicious' mature and immature foliage, fruit, and 1-yr-old limbs after dip treatments with Phase III oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), microencapsulated pheromone. Microcapsules were counted with a dissecting microscope at 50x magnification after apple tissues were treated with a two-step dye staining process to increase the visibility of the microcapsules. The number of Phase III microcapsules on 1-yr limbs treated with a field concentration was two- to threefold greater than the number of microcapsules on similarly treated fruit or foliage. Phase I, III, and V OFM MEC and Checkmate OFM-F formulations of microencapsulated pheromone also were compared to determine their abundance on mature apple foliage. The Phase V OFM MEC formulation had the highest density of microcapsules when mature foliage was treated at the field rate. The Phase I treatment had the greatest difference between upper and lower leaf surfaces with 18-fold greater microcapsule density on the upper surface. On mature apple leaves treated with Phase III MEC, the number of microcapsules/cm2 was two- to threefold greater on fields of view without the mid-vein than those that included the mid-vein. The cuticle structure and abundance of trichomes are two factors that may have contributed to differences in microcapsule density among plant tissue types, top and bottom leaf surfaces, and fields of view with and without the mid-vein.

Pre-exposure of male oblique-banded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), to the main component of their pheromone blend and traces of its geometric isomer (Z11-14:Ac and E11-14:Ac, respectively) at 36 +/- 12 ng/ml air for durations of 15 and 60 min in sealed Teflon chambers with continuous air exchange significantly reduced peripheral sensory responses to these compounds as measured by electroantennograms (EAGs). The EAG responses of C. rosaceana to all tested dosages of pheromonal stimuli and blank controls were lowered by 55-58% and made a linear recovery to 70-100% of the pre-exposure amplitude within 12.5 min at a rate of 3-4 %/min. Exposures of 5 min were insufficient to maximally adapt C. rosaceana; however, exposures of 15 and 60 min reduced sensory responsiveness to the same minimum. In contrast, EAG responses of redbanded leafroller, Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker), after identical pheromone exposure for 5 and 60 min yielded no long-lasting peripheral sensory adaptation as measured by EAGs, even though this species shares the same main pheromone components with C. rosaceana. We postulate that the long-lasting peripheral adaptation observed for C. rosaceana is a mechanism that impedes central nervous system habituation in this species. In contrast, A. velutinana may be more susceptible to central nervous system habituation because it lacks the capacity for minutes-long adaptation. We propose that long-lasting adaptation may be a mechanism explaining some of the variation in efficacy of pheromone-based mating disruption across taxa.
