52. Ecosystem models of Scottish sea lochs for assessing the impact of nutrient enrichment.

Abstract

A previously published model is used to assess the effects of potential disturbances on a sea-loch ecosystem. Nutrient enrichment on its own has little or no effect, and the only major consequence of enhanced or depressed light conditions is a phase shift in the spring bloom. For the fjordic systems modelled, the most important type of disturbance is a reduction in grazing, which can result in high levels of phytoplankton biomass for much of the year. In the absence of grazing control, primary production in these systems becomes nutrient-limited, and it is concluded that the most serious threat would be posed by a reduction in grazing rate combined with an increase in nutrient loading. 54. The annealing of deformed potassium

Abstract

The stage B (15 K) recovery process in cold-worked potassium (which accounts for about 40% of the total recovery) is described by a new microscopic model of point-defect annealing. The extreme width and complex strain dependence of this stage are explained by a model in which vacancies and di-vacancies anneal to dislocation sinks. The point defects are considered to be originally deposited at random inside narrow 'pipe-like" regions which are slightly diffused versions of the strings in which point-defects are usually thought to be deposited by cold-work. The dense initial vacancy distribution in these pipes gives rise to a high probability of vacancy combination and hence enhances the initial rate of vacancy annealing.
