In order to explore the impacts of past climate changes on the origin and evolution of Lake Poyang, the biggest freshwater lake in China, eight periods of palaeoenvironmental changes were constructed to depict the history of climate change over the past 3500 years based on the palynological records and carbon isotopic excursions. The climate regime was associated with the presence of a deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved forest/a mixed needle broad-leaved forest and strong/weak solar variability. Palaeohydrology change reconstructed by the percentage of aquatics and stable carbon isotopes demonstrated that the wet episode was associated with the developed lacustrine facies and enhanced El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activities. The presence of the united open lake (Lake Poyang) during 2000–1200 cal. a BP was linked to a long wet period caused by the strong ENSO activities. At the decadal-centennial timescales, climate changes together with the ENSO activities might have played a great role on the regional hydrological condition and sedimentary evolution in southern Lake Poyang. The correlations of the palaeotemperature and palaeohydrology with the multi-proxy data from the Northern Hemisphere all suggest that palaeotemperature change with the monsoon intensity is linked to the solar variations, but palaeohydrology change has a striking consistency with the ENSO activities. The distinct hydrothermal diversification (warm-wet, warm-dry, cold-wet, cold-dry) revealed by the palaeotemperature and palaeohydrology changes will provide important clues about the origin and evolution of Lake Poyang in the Holocene and a better understanding of the interactions between solar radiation, ENSO activity and lake deposition in the middle Yangtze River Valley. Hyalospheniids are among the most common and conspicuous testate amoebae in high-latitude peatlands and forest humus. These testate amoebae were widely studied as bioindicators and are increasingly used as models in microbial biogeography. However, data on their diversity and ecology are still very unevenly distributed geographically: notably, data are lacking for low-latitude peatlands. We describe here a new species, Nebela jiuhuensis, from peatlands near the Middle Yangtze River reach of south-central China with characteristic morphology. The test (shell) has hollow horn-like lateral extensions also found in N. saccifera, N. equicalceus (=N. hippocrepis), and N. ansata, three large species restricted mostly to Sphagnum peatlands of Eastern North America. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase ( COI) data confirm that N. jiuhuensis is closely related to the morphologically very similar North American species N. saccifera and more distantly to N. ansata within the N. penardiana group. These species are all found in wet mosses growing in poor fens. Earlier reports of morphologically similar specimens found in South Korea peatlands suggest that N. jiuhuensis may be distributed in comparable peatlands in Eastern Asia (China and Korea). The discovery of such a conspicuous new species in Chinese peatlands suggests that many new testate amoebae species are yet to be discovered, including potential regional endemics. Furthermore, human activities (e.g., drainage, agriculture, and pollution) have reduced the known habitat of N. jiuhuensis, which can thus be considered as locally endangered. We, therefore, suggest that this very conspicuous micro-organism with a probably limited geographical distribution and specific habitat requirement should be considered as a flagship species for microbial biogeography as well as local environmental conservation and management. To explore the relationship between the global cooling, westerlies, and central Asian aridity, we report ∼1.1 Ma local sedimentary environment changes according to physical-chemical parameters from an 800-m core (KT11) from the Kashgar region in the western Tarim Basin, China. Grain size end-member (EM) modelling is employed to quantify the processes of sediment transport and deposition. Four end members with modal values of 272 μm, 144 μm, 45.6 μm and 12.7 μm were extracted and explained 97.9% of the variance in the grain size data, corresponding aeolian dynamics, river energies, delta development and pedogenesis/long-term suspension components transported by wind or water, respectively. Four dominant sedimentation types, including lacustrine facies, delta facies, fluvial facies, and aeolian dunes, were identified through lithology and grain size frequency curves. The 1.1 Ma sedimentary successions experienced delta deposits interbedded with fluvial and aeolian deposits and lacustrines (1.1–0.6 Ma), alternating fluvial and aeolian facies with the occurrence of deltas and lacustrines (0.6–0.15 Ma), and aeolian facies interbedded with deltas and fluvial facies (0.15 Ma-present). Stepwise drying sedimentary conditions and enhanced desertification indicated by increasing rubidium/strontium ratios and proportion of aeolian sands, and decreasing total organic carbon since the past 1.1 Ma, implied intensified westerlies, likely resulted from ice volume expansion and ongoing global cooling according to geological record comparison and simulations during the Last Glacial Maximum compared to preindustrial conditions, which may have controlled the expansion of the permanent deserts in inland Asia. These persistent drying trends and intensified westerly circulation in arid regions during glacial periods after the mid-Pleistocene Transition indicated by larger amplitudes of aeolian sand proportion than prior to 0.6 Ma are similar to those in the interior monsoonal Asia, where the larger-amplitude of median grain size indicated enhanced Asian winter monsoon intensity and drier glacials. • Dominant sedimentation types are identified. • Westerly aridity is reconstructed since mid-Pleistocene. • Concurrently enhanced westerlies and winter monsoon is proposed. • Records and simulations show westerly aridity driven by global cooling.
