The dynamics of GRB jets during the afterglow phase is most reliably and accurately modelled using hydrodynamic simulations. All published simulations, however, have considered only a uniform external medium, while a stratified external medium is expected around long duration GRB progenitors. Here we present simulations of the dynamics of GRB jets and the resulting afterglow emission for both uniform and stratified external media with $\rho \propto r^{-k}$ for k = 0, 1, 2. The simulations are performed in 2D using the special relativistic version of the Mezcal code. The dynamics for stratified external media are broadly similar to those derived for expansion into a uniform external medium. The jet half-opening angle start increasing logarithmically with time once the Lorentz factor drops below 1/theta_0. For larger k values the lateral expansion is faster at early times and slower at late times with the jet expansion becoming Newtonian and slowly approaching spherical symmetry over progressively longer timescales. We find that contrary to analytic expectations, there is a reasonably sharp jet break in the lightcurve for k = 2 although the shape of the break is affected more by the viewing angle than by the slope of the external density profile. Steeper density profiles are found to produce more gradual jet breaks while larger viewing angles cause smoother and later appearing jet breaks. The counter-jet becomes visible as it becomes sub-relativistic, and for k=0 this results in a clear bump-like feature in the light curve. However, for larger k values the jet decelerates more gradually, causing only a mild flattening in the radio light curve that might be hard to discern when k=2. Late time radio calorimetry is likely to consistently over-estimate the true energy by up to a factor of a few for k=2, and either over-predict or under-predict it by a smaller factor for k = 0,1., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ

The dynamics of GRB jets during the afterglow phase have an important effect on the interpretation of their observations and for inferring key physical parameters such as their true energy and event rate. Semi-analytic models generally predict a fast lateral expansion, where the jet opening angle asymptotically grows exponentially with its radius. Numerical simulations, however, show a much more modest lateral expansion, where the jet retains memory of its initial opening angle for a very long time, and the flow remains non-spherical until it becomes sub-relativistic, and only then gradually approaches spherical symmetry. Here we suggest a new analytic model based on a new physically derived recipe for the lateral expansion. We also generalize the model by relaxing the common approximations of ultra-relativistic motion and a narrow jet opening angle. We find that the new analytic model fits much better the results of numerical simulations, mainly because it remains valid also in the mildly relativistic, quasi spherical regime. This model shows that for modest initial jet half-opening angles, \theta_0, the outflow is not sufficiently ultra-relativistic when its Lorentz factor reaches \Gamma = 1/\theta_0 and therefore the sideways expansion is rather slow, showing no rapid, exponential phase. On the other hand, we find that jets with an extremely narrow initial half-opening angle, of about \theta_0 << 10^{-1.5} or so, which are still sufficiently ultra-relativistic at \Gamma = 1/\theta_0, do show a phase of rapid, exponential lateral expansion. Astrophysical sources of relativistic jets or outflows, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), active galactic nuclei (AGN) or micro-quasars, often show strong time variability. Despite such impulsive behavior, most models of these sources assume a steady state for simplicity. Here I consider a time-dependent outflow that is initially highly magnetized and divided into many well-separated sub-shells, as it experiences impulsive magnetic acceleration and interacts with the external medium. In AGN the deceleration by the external medium is usually unimportant and most of the initial magnetic energy is naturally converted into kinetic energy, leading to efficient dissipation in internal shocks as the sub-shells collide. Such efficient low-magnetization internal shocks can also naturally occur in GRBs, where the deceleration by the external medium can be important. A strong low-magnetization reverse shock can develop, and the initial division into sub-shells allows it to be relativistic and its emission to peak on the timescale of the prompt GRB duration (which is not possible for a single shell). Sub-shells also enable the outflow to reach much higher Lorentz factors that help satisfy existing constraints on GRBs from intrinsic pair opacity and from the afterglow onset time., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures, accepted to MNRAS (the abstract and introduction are now easier to follow)

Important astrophysical sources, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) or tidal disruption events, are impulsive -- strongly varying with time. These outflows are likely highly magnetized near the central source, but their interaction with the external medium is not yet fully understood. Here I consider the combined impulsive magnetic acceleration of an initially highly magnetized shell of plasma and its deceleration by the external medium. I find four main dynamical regimes, that (for a given outflow) depend on the external density. (I) For small enough external densities the shell becomes kinetically dominated before it is significantly decelerated, thus reverting to the familiar unmagnetized "thin shell" case, which produces bright reverse shock emission that peaks well after the prompt GRB. (II) For larger external densities the shell remains highly magnetized and the reverse shock is strongly suppressed. It eventually transfers most of its energy through pdV work to the shocked external medium, whose afterglow emission peaks on a timescale similar to the prompt GRB duration. (III) For even larger external densities there is no initial impulsive acceleration phase. Swift/BAT detected the first burst from 1E 1841-045 in May 2010 with intermittent burst activity recorded through at least July 2011. Here we present Swift and Fermi/GBM observations of this burst activity and search for correlated changes to the persistent X-ray emission of the source. The T90 durations of the bursts range between 18-140 ms, comparable to other magnetar burst durations, while the energy released in each burst ranges between (0.8 - 25)E38 erg, which is in the low side of SGR bursts. We find that the bursting activity did not have a significant effect on the persistent flux level of the source. We argue that the mechanism leading to this sporadic burst activity in 1E 1841-045 might not involve large scale restructuring (either crustal or magnetospheric) as seen in other magnetar sources., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present our temporal and spectral analyses of 29 bursts from SGR J0501+4516, detected with the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope during the 13 days of the source activation in 2008 (August 22 to September 3). We find that the T90 durations of the bursts can be fit with a log-normal distribution with a mean value of ~ 123 ms. We also estimate for the first time event durations of Soft Gamma Repeater (SGR) bursts in photon space (i.e., using their deconvolved spectra) and find that these are very similar to the T90s estimated in count space (following a log-normal distribution with a mean value of ~ 124 ms). We fit the time-integrated spectra for each burst and the time-resolved spectra of the five brightest bursts with several models. We find that a single power law with an exponential cutoff model fits all 29 bursts well, while 18 of the events can also be fit with two black body functions. We expand on the physical interpretation of these two models and we compare their parameters and discuss their evolution. We show that the time-integrated and time-resolved spectra reveal that Epeak decreases with energy flux (and fluence) to a minimum of ~30 keV at F=8.7e-6 erg/cm2/s, increasing steadily afterwards. Two more sources exhibit a similar trend: SGRs J1550-5418 and 1806-20. The isotropic luminosity corresponding to these flux values is roughly similar for all sources (0.4-1.5 e40 erg/s)., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Short Gamma-Ray Bursts (SGRBs) are among the most luminous explosions in the universe, releasing in less than one second the energy emitted by our Galaxy over one year. Despite decades of observations, the nature of their "central-engine" remains unknown. Considering a binary of magnetized neutron stars and solving Einstein equations, we show that their merger results in a rapidly spinning black hole surrounded by a hot and highly magnetized torus. Lasting over 35 ms and much longer than previous simulations, our study reveals that magnetohydrodynamical instabilities amplify an initially turbulent magnetic field of ~ 10^{12} G to produce an ordered poloidal field of ~ 10^{15} G along the black-hole spin-axis, within a half-opening angle of ~ 30 deg, which may naturally launch a relativistic jet. There are several lines of evidence indicating that the ultra-relativistic outflows powering gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are collimated into narrow jets. However, these are indirect, and the jet structure is rather poorly constrained. What is more, the jet dynamics have still not been investigated in detail. It has been suggested that the observed variety between different long duration events, ranging from bright spectrally hard GRBs, to dimmer and spectrally softer X-ray flashes (XRFs) may be largely due to different viewing angles (or lines of sight) relative to rather similar relativistic jets. Here we describe the current state of knowledge on these topics, explain some of the most relevant physics behind some of the basic principles, and discuss prospects for the future., Comment: 46 pages, 12 figures; book chapter, to appear in "Gamma-ray Bursts" (CUP)

The strong variability of magnetic central engines of AGN and GRBs may result in highly intermittent strongly magnetized relativistic outflows. We find a new magnetic acceleration mechanism for such impulsive flows that can be much more effective than the acceleration of steady-state flows. This impulsive acceleration results in kinetic-energy-dominated flows at astrophysically relevant distances from the central source. For a spherical flow, a discrete shell ejected from the source over a time t_0 with Lorentz factor Gamma~1 and initial magnetization sigma_0 = B_0^2/(4 pi rho_0 c^2) >> 1 quickly reaches a typical Lorentz factor Gamma ~ sigma_0^{1/3} and magnetization sigma ~ sigma_0^{2/3} at the distance R_0 ~ ct_0. At this point the magnetized shell of width Delta ~ R_0 in the lab frame loses causal contact with the source and continues to accelerate by spreading significantly in its own rest frame. The expansion is driven by the magnetic pressure gradient and leads to relativistic relative velocities between the front and back of the shell. While the expansion is roughly symmetric in the center of momentum frame, in the lab frame most of the energy and momentum remain in a region (or shell) of width Delta ~ R_0 at the head of the flow. This acceleration proceeds as Gamma ~ (sigma_0 R/R_0)^{1/3} and sigma ~ sigma_0^{2/3} (R/R_0)^{-1/3} until reaching a coasting radius R_c ~ R_0 sigma_0^2 where the kinetic energy becomes dominant: Gamma ~ sigma_0 and sigma ~ 1 at R_c. Then the shell starts coasting and spreading (radially) causing its magnetization to drop as sigma ~ R_c/R at R>R_c. Given the typical variability time-scales of AGN and GRBs, the magnetic acceleration in these sources is a combination of the quasi-steady-state collimation acceleration close to the source and the impulsive acceleration further out. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has more than doubled the number of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected above 100 MeV within its first year of operation. Thanks to the very wide energy range covered by Fermi's Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM; 8 keV to 40 MeV) and Large Area Telescope (LAT; 25 MeV to >300 GeV) it has measured the prompt GRB emission spectrum over an unprecedentedly large energy range (from ~8 keV to ~30 GeV). Here I briefly outline some highlights from Fermi GRB observations during its first ~1.5 yr of operation, focusing on the prompt emission phase. Interesting new observations are discussed along with some of their possible implications, including: (i) What can we learn from the Fermi-LAT GRB detection rate, (ii) A limit on the variation of the speed of light with photon energy (for the first time beyond the Planck scale for a linear energy dependence from direct time of arrival measurements), (iii) Lower-limits on the bulk Lorentz factor of the GRB outflow (of ~1000 for the brightest Fermi LAT GRBs), (iv) The detection (or in other cases, lack thereof) of a distinct spectral component at high (and sometimes also at low) energies, and possible implications for the prompt GRB emission mechanism, (v) The later onset (and longer duration) of the high-energy emission (>100 MeV), compared to the low-energy (< ~1 MeV) emission, that is seen in most Fermi-LAT GRBs., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; to be published in the Proceedings of "The Shocking Universe - Gamma-Ray Bursts and High Energy Shock phenomena", Venice (Italy), September 14-18, 2009 (based on an invited talk there, but updated to include results up to the end of January 2010)

GRB080503 was classified as a short GRB with extended emission (Perley et al. 2009). The origin of such extended emission (found in about a quarter of Swift short GRBs) is still unclear and may provide some clues to the identity of the elusive progenitors of short GRBs. The extended emission from GRB 080503 is followed by a rapid decay phase (RDP) that is detected over an unusually large dynamical range (one decade in time and ~3.5 decades in flux). We model the broad envelope of extended emission and the subsequent RDP using a physical model (Genet & Granot 2009), in which the prompt emission (and its tail) is the sum of its individual pulses (and their tails). For GRB 080503, a single pulse fit is found to be unacceptable. The RDP displays very strong spectral evolution and shows some evidence for the presence of two spectral components with different temporal behaviour, likely arising from distinct physical regions. A two pulse fit provides a much better fit to the data. The shallow gamma-ray and steep hard X-ray decays are hard to account for simultaneously, and require the second pulse to deviate from the simplest version of the model we use. Therefore, while high latitude emission is a viable explanation for the RDP in GRB080503, it is quite plausible that another mechanism is at work here. Finally, we note that the properties of the RDP following the extended emission of short GRBs appear to have different properties than that following the prompt emission of long GRBs. However, a larger sample of short GRBs with extended emission is required before any strong conclusion can be drawn., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We present results of an extensive observing campaign of the short duration, hard spectrum gamma-ray burst (GRB) 070724A, aimed at detecting the radioactively-powered emission that might follow from a binary merger or collapse involving compact objects. Our multi-band observations span the range in time over which this so-called Li-Paczynski mini-supernova could be active, beginning within 3 hours of the GRB trigger, and represent some of the deepest and most comprehensive searches for such emission. We find no evidence for such activity and place limits on the abundances and the lifetimes of the possible radioactive nuclides that could form in the rapid decompression of nuclear-density matter. Furthermore, our limits are significantly fainter than the peak magnitude of any previously detected broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN) associated with other GRBs, effectively ruling out a long GRB-like SN for with this event. Given the unambiguous redshift of the host galaxy (z=0.456), GRB 070724A represents one of a small, but growing, number of short-hard GRBs for which firm physical/restframe quantities currently exist. The host of GRB 070724A is a moderately star-forming galaxy with an older stellar population component and a relatively high metallicity of 12+log(O/H)_KD02=9.1. We find no significant evidence for large amounts of extinction along the line of sight that could mask the presence of a SN explosion and estimate a small probability for chance alignment with the putative host. We discuss how our derived constraints fit into the evolving picture of short-hard GRBs, their potential progenitors, and the host environments in which they are thought to be produced., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Before the launch of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope there were only a handful of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected at high energies (above 100 MeV), while several different suggestions have been made for possible high-energy emission sites and mechanisms. Here I briefly review some of the theoretical expectations for high-energy emission from GRBs, outline some of the hopes for improving our understanding of GRB physics through Fermi observations of the prompt GRB emission or the early afterglow (first few hours after the GRB), and summarize what we have learned so far from the existing Fermi GRB observations (over its first half-year of operation). Highlights include the first detection of > GeV emission from a short GRB, as well as detailed temporal and spectral information for the first GRB with > GeV emission and a measured redshift, that has the highest measured apparent (isotropic equivalent) radiated energy output (for any GRB), the largest lower limit on the bulk Lorentz factor of the emitting region, and constrains possible Lorentz invariance violation by placing a robust lower limit on the quantum gravity mass., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure with 3 panels - Invited talk, submitted to Proceedings of 44th Recontres de Moriond - "Very High Energy Phenomena in the Universe", La Thuile (Val d'Aosta, Italy) February 1 - 8, 2009

The Swift discovered GRB080319B was by far the most distant source ever observed at naked eye brightness, reaching a peak apparent magnitude of 5.3 at a redshift of z=0.937. We present our late-time optical (HST, Gemini & VLT) and X-ray (Chandra) observations, which confirm that an achromatic break occurred in the power-law afterglow light curve at ~11 days post-burst. This most likely indicates that the gamma-ray burst (GRB) outflow was collimated, which for a uniform jet would imply a total energy in the jet E_{jet} \gsim 10^{52} erg. Our observations also show a late-time excess of red light, which is well explained if the GRB was accompanied by a supernova (SN), similar to those seen in some other long-duration GRBs. The latest observations are dominated by light from the host and show that the GRB took place in a faint dwarf galaxy (r(AB)\approx27.0, rest-frame M_B\approx-17.2). This galaxy is small even by the standards of other GRB hosts, which is suggestive of a low metallicity environment. Intriguingly, the properties of this extreme event - a small host and bright supernova - are entirely typical of the very low-luminosity bursts such as GRB980425 and GRB060218., Comment: Revised in response to referee's comments, and with some additional data added

The exact profile of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow image on the plane of the sky can provide important constraints on the underlying physics. In particular, it can test whether the magnetic field in the emitting shocked external medium decreases significantly with the distance behind the shock front, or remains roughly constant. Moreover, it enables more accurate measurements of the afterglow image size and the expected scintillation properties. In this work analytic expressions are derived for the afterglow image in power law segments (PLSs) of the afterglow synchrotron spectrum in which the emission originates from a very thin layer just behind the shock, while simple semi-analytic expressions are derived for the remaining PLSs in which the emission arises from the bulk of the shocked fluid. In all cases the expressions are for a general power law external density profile, and are convenient to use in afterglow studies., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

The long lived afterglow emission that follows gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) was predicted prior to its detection in 1997, in the X-rays, optical and radio. It is thought to arise from the shock that is driven into the external medium as the latter decelerates the relativistic outflow that drives the GRB, and persists well after most of the energy in the outflow is transferred to the shocked external medium. As the blast wave decelerates, the typical emission frequency shifts to longer wavelength. Recent observations following the launch of the Swift satellite challenge the traditional afterglow modeling and call into questions some of the basic underlying concepts. Opacity effects in relativistic sources of high-energy gamma-rays, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) or Blazars, can probe the Lorentz factor of the outflow and the distance of the emission site from the source, and thus help constrain the composition of the outflow (protons, pairs, magnetic field) and the emission mechanism. Most previous works consider the opacity in steady state. Here we study time dependent effects of the opacity to pair production ($\gamma\gamma \to e^+e^-$) in impulsive relativistic sources. We present a simple, yet rich, semi-analytic model for the time and energy dependence of the optical depth, $\tau$, where an ultra-relativistic thin spherical shell emits isotropically in its own rest frame over a finite range of radii, $R_0 < R < R_0 + \Delta R$. This is very relevant for GRB internal shocks. We find that in an impulsive source ($\Delta R <~ R_0$), while the instantaneous spectrum has an exponential cutoff above the photon energy $\epsilon_1(T)$ where $\tau = 1$, the time integrated spectrum has a power-law high-energy tail above a photon energy $\epsilon_{1*} \sim \epsilon_1(\Delta T)$ where $\Delta T$ is the duration of the emission episode. Furthermore, photons with $\epsilon > \epsilon_{1*}$ will arrive mainly near the onset of the spike or flare from to the short emission episode, as in impulsive sources it takes time to build-up the (target) photon field, and thus $\tau(\epsilon)$ initially increases with time and $\epsilon_1(T)$ decreases with time, so that photons of energy $\epsilon > \epsilon_{1*}$ are able to escape the source mainly very early on while $\epsilon_1(T) > \epsilon$. As the source approaches a quasi-steady state ($\Delta R >> R_0$), the time integrated spectrum develops an exponential cutoff, while the power-law tail becomes increasingly suppressed., Comment: 67 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ

Many Swift GRBs show an early phase of shallow decay in their X-ray afterglows, lasting from $t \sim 10^{2.5} $s to $\sim 10^4 $s after the GRB, where the flux decays as $\sim t^{-0.2}-t^{-0.8}$. This is perhaps the most mysterious of the new features discovered by Swift in the early X-ray afterglow, since it is still not clear what causes it. There are several lines of evidence which suggest that the relativistic outflows in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are collimated into narrow jets. The jet structure has important implications for the true energy release and the event rate of GRBs, and can constrain the mechanism responsible for the acceleration and collimation of the jet. Nevertheless, the jet structure and its dynamics as it sweeps up the external medium and decelerates, are not well understood. It is demonstrated here that if the prompt GRB emission is produced by the simplest version of the external shock model, a specific relation should prevail between the observed duration, isotropic equivalent energy, and photon peak energy. In essence, this relation arises because both the burst duration and the typical energy of the emitted synchrotron photons depend on the same combination of the, usually poorly constrained, external density at the deceleration radius, $n_{dec}$, and initial bulk Lorentz factor, $\Gamma_0$. This has the fortunate consequence of making the relation independent of both $\Gamma_0$ and $n_{dec}$. Unless the efficiency of electron acceleration is very low, synchrotron gamma-rays from the external shock would fail to meet the current observational constraints for the vast majority of GRBs, including those with a smooth, single peak temporal profile. This argues either against an external shock origin for the prompt emission in GRBs or for changes in our understanding of the microphysical and radiation processes occurring within the shocked region., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; submitted to ApJL

Some GRB afterglow light curves show significant variability, which often includes episodes of rebrightening. This was attributed in several cases to large fluctuations in the external density. Here we examine the effect of a sharp increase in the external density on the light curve by considering, for the first time, a full treatment of both the hydrodynamic evolution and the radiation in this scenario. To this end we develop a semi-analytic model for the light curve and carry out several elaborate numerical simulations using a 1D hydrodynamic code together with a synchrotron radiation code.Two spherically symmetric cases are explored in detail: a density jump in a uniform external medium, and a wind termination shock. Contrary to previous works, we find that even a sharp (step function) and large (by a factor of $a>>1$) increase in the external density does not produce sharp features in the light curve, and cannot account for significant temporal variability. For a wind termination shock, the light curve smoothly transitions between the asymptotic power-laws over about one decade in time, and there is no rebrightening in the optical or X-rays to serve as a clear observational signature. For a sharp jump in a uniform density we find that the maximal deviation $\Delta\alpha_max$ of the temporal decay index $\alpha$ from its asymptotic value, is bounded (e.g., $\Delta\alpha_max <0.4$ for $a=10$); $\Delta\alpha_max$ slowly increases with $a$, converging to $\Delta\alpha_{max} \approx 1$ at very large $a$ values. Therefore, no optical rebrightening is expected here as well. In the X-rays, while the asymptotic flux is unaffected by the density jump, the fluctuations in $\alpha$ are found to be comparable to those in the optical. According to current models, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced when the energy carried by a relativistic outflow is dissipated and converted into radiation. The efficiency of this process, $\epsilon_\gamma$, is one of the critical factors in any GRB model. The X-ray afterglow light curves of Swift GRBs show an early stage of flat decay. This has been interpreted as reflecting energy injection. When combined with previous estimates, which have concluded that the kinetic energy of the late ($\gtrsim 10$ hr) afterglow is comparable to the energy emitted in gamma-rays, this interpretation implies very high values of $\epsilon_\gamma \gtrsim 0.9$. Such a high efficiency is hard to reconcile with most models, including in particular the popular internal-shocks model. We re-analyze the derivation of the kinetic energy from the afterglow X-ray flux and re-examine the resulting estimates of the efficiency. We confirm that, if the flatt decay arises from energy injection and the pre-Swift broad-band estimates of the kinetic energy are correct, then $\epsilon_\gamma \gtrsim 0.9$. We point out, however, that another interpretation of the flattish decay - a variable X-ray afterglow efficiency (e.g., due to a time dependence of afterglow shock microphysical parameters) - is possible. We also show that direct estimates of the kinetic energy from the late X-ray afterglow flux are sensitive to the assumed values of the shock microphysical parameters and suggest that broad-band afterglow fits might have underestimated the kinetic energy (e.g., by overestimating the fraction of electrons that are accelerated to relativistic energies). Either one of these possibilities implies a lower gamma-ray efficiency, and their joint effect could conceivably reduce the estimate of the typical $\epsilon_\gamma$ to $\sim 0.1-0.5$., Comment: 31 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; submitted to MNRAS

The early X-ray afterglow for a significant number of gamma-ray bursts detected by the Swift satellite is observed to have a phase of very slow flux decline with time ($F_\nu \propto t^{-\alpha}$ with $0.2 \lesssim \alpha \lesssim 0.8$) for $10^{2.5} s \lesssim t \lesssim 10^4$ s, while the subsequent decline is the usual $1 \lesssim \alpha_3 \lesssim 1.5$ behavior, that was seen in the pre-Swift era. We show that this behavior is a natural consequence of a small spread in the Lorentz factor of the ejecta, by a factor of $\sim 2-4$, where the slower ejecta gradually catch-up with the shocked external medium, thus increasing the energy of forward shock and delaying its deceleration. The end of the ``shallow'' flux decay stage marks the beginning of the Blandford-McKee self similar external shock evolution. This suggests that most of the energy in the relativistic outflow is in material with a Lorentz factor of $\sim 30-50$., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, 1 table; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Early X-ray afterglows recently detected by {\it Swift} frequently show a phase of very shallow flux decay lasting from $\sim 10^{2.5} $s up to $\sim 10^4 $s, followed by a steeper, more familiar decay. We suggest that the flat early part of the light curve may be a combination of the decaying tail of the prompt emission and the delayed onset of the afterglow emission observed from viewing angles slightly outside the edge of the region within the jet with prominent afterglow emission, as predicted previously. This would imply that a significant fraction of viewers get very little external shock energy along their line of sight, and, therefore, see a very high $\gamma$-ray to kinetic energy ratio at early times. The early flat phase in the afterglow light curve implies, in a rather robust and model independent manner, a very large $\gamma$-ray efficiency, typically $\gtrsim 90%$, which is very difficult to extract from baryons by internal shocks., Comment: Revised version, submitted to ApJ

The first X-ray afterglow for a short (~30 ms), hard gamma-ray burst was detected by Swift on 9 May 2005 (GRB 050509b). No optical or radio counterpart was identified in follow-up observations. The tentative association of the GRB with a nearby giant elliptical galaxy at redshift z=0.2248 would imply a total energy release E(gamma, isotropic) ~3 x 10**48 erg, and that the progenitor had traveled several tens of kpc from its point of origin, in agreement with expectations linking these events to the final merger of compact binaries driven by gravitational wave emission. We model the dynamical merger of such a system and the time-dependent evolution of the accretion tori thus created. The resulting energetics, variability, and expected durations are consistent with GRB 050509b originating from the tidal disruption of a neutron star by a stellar mass black hole, or of the merger of two neutron stars followed by prompt gravitational collapse of the massive remnant. We discuss how the available gamma-ray and X-ray data provide a probe for the nature of the relativistic ejecta and the surrounding medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The jet structure in gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources is still largely an open question. The leading models invoke either (i) a roughly uniform jet with sharp edges, or (ii) a jet with a narrow core and wide wings where the energy per solid angle drops as a power law with the angle $\theta$ from the jet symmetry axis. Recently, a two component jet model has also been considered, with a narrow uniform jet of initial Lorentz factor $\Gamma_0 \gtrsim 100$ surrounded by a wider uniform jet with $\Gamma_0 \sim 10-30$. Some models predict more exotic jet profiles, such as a thin uniform ring (i.e. the outflow is bounded by two concentric cones of half opening angle $\theta_c$ and $\theta_c + \Delta\theta$, with $\Delta\theta \ll \theta_c$) or a fan (a thin outflow with $\Delta\theta \ll 1$ along the rotational equator, $\theta_c = \pi/2 + \Delta\theta/2$). In this paper we calculate the expected afterglow light curves from such jet structures, using a simple formalism that is developed here for this purpose, and could also have other applications. These light curves are qualitatively compared to observations of GRB afterglows. It is shown that the two component jet model cannot produce sharp features in the afterglow model due to the deceleration of the wide jet or the narrow jet becoming visible at lines of sight outside of it. We find that a "ring" shaped jet or a "fan" shaped jet produce a jet break in the afterglow light curve that is too shallow compared to observations, where the change in the temporal decay index across the jet break is about half of that for a uniform conical jet. For a "ring" jet, the jet break is divided into two distinct and smaller breaks, the first occurring when $\gamma\Delta\theta \sim 1-2$ and the second when $\gamma\theta_c \sim 1/2$., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures; submitted to ApJ

X-ray flashes (XRFs) and X-ray rich gamma-ray bursts (XRGRBs) share many observational characteristics with long duration GRBs, but the reason for which their prompt emission peaks at lower photon energies, $E_p$, is still under debate. Although many different models have been invoked in order to explain the lower $E_p$ values, their implications for the afterglow emission were not considered in most cases, mainly because observations of XRF afterglows have become available only recently. Here we examine the predictions of the various XRF models for the afterglow emission, and test them against the observations of XRF 030723 and XRGRB 041006, the events with the best monitored afterglow light curves in their respective class. We show that most existing XRF models are hard to reconcile with the observed afterglow light curves, which are very flat at early times. Such light curves are, however, naturally produced by a roughly uniform jet with relatively sharp edges that is viewed off-axis (i.e. from outside of the jet aperture). This type of model self consistently accommodates both the observed prompt emission and the afterglow light curves of XRGRB 041006 and XRF 030723, implying viewing angles $\theta_{obs}$ from the jet axis of $(\theta_{obs}-\theta_0)\sim 0.15\theta_0$ and $\sim \theta_0$, respectively, where $\theta_0\sim 3$ deg is the jet half-opening angle. This suggests that GRBs, XRGRBs and XRFs are intrinsically similar relativistic jets viewed from different angles, corresponding to $\gamma(\theta_{obs}-\theta_0)$ of less than 1, between 1 and a few, and more than a few, respectively, where $\gamma$ is the Lorentz factor. Future observations with Swift could help test this unification scheme in which GRBs, XRGRBs and XRFs share the same basic physics and differ only by their orientation relative to our line of sight., Comment: some references added, small typos corrected, and the important role of HETE II emphasized

The magnetic field structure in GRB outflows is of great interest as it can provide valuable clues that can help pin down the mechanism responsible for the acceleration and collimation of GRB jets. The most promising way of probing it is through polarization measurements of the synchrotron emission from the GRB ejecta, which includes the gamma-ray emission and the reverse shock emission. Measuring polarization in gamma-rays with current instruments is extremely difficult: so far there is only one claim of detection (in GRB 021206) which despite the favorable conditions remains very controversial. The emission from the reverse shock that propagates into the ejecta as it is decelerated by the ambient medium peaks in the optical after tens of seconds (the `optical flash') and dominates the optical emission up to about ten minutes after the GRB. Unfortunately, no polarization measurements of this optical emission have been made to date. However, after the reverse shock finishes crossing the shell of GRB ejecta, the shocked ejecta cools adiabatically and radiates at lower and lower frequencies, peaking in the radio after $\sim 1$ day (the `radio flare'). We use VLA data of radio flares from GRBs to constrain the polarization of this emission. We find only upper limits for both linear and circular polarization. Our best limits are for GRB 991216, for which we find $3\sigma$ upper limits on the linear and circular polarization of 7% and 9%, respectively. These limits provide interesting constraints on existing GRB models. Specifically, our results are hard to reconcile with a predominantly ordered toroidal magnetic field in the GRB outflow together with a `structured' jet, where the energy per solid angle drops as the inverse square of the angle from the jet axis, that is expected in models where the outflow is Poynting flux dominated., Comment: minor changes to match the version accepted for publication in ApJ

The low luminosity radio emission of the unusually faint GRB 031203 has been argued to support the idea of a class of intrinsically sub-energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), currently comprising two members. While low energy GRBs probably exist, we show that the collective prompt and multiwavelength observations of the afterglow of GRB 031203 do not necessarily require a sub-energetic nature for that event. In fact, the data are more consistent with a typical, powerful GRB seen at an angle of about twice the opening angle of the central jet. The (redshift corrected) peak energy, E_p, of GRB 031203 then becomes ~ 2 MeV, similar to many other GRBs., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; ApJL in press

Recent observational and theoretical studies have raised the possibility that the collimated outflows in gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources have two distinct components: a narrow (opening half-angle $\theta_{\rm n}$), highly relativistic (initial Lorentz factor $\eta_\rmn \gtrsim 10^2$) outflow, from which the $\gamma$-ray emission originates, and a wider ($\theta_{\rm w} \lesssim 3 \theta_{\rm n}$), moderately relativistic ($\eta_{\rm w}\sim 10$) surrounding flow. Using a simple synchrotron emission model, we calculate the R-band afterglow lightcurves expected in this scenario and derive algebraic expressions for the flux ratios of the emission from the two jet components at the main transition times in the lightcurve. We apply this model to GRB sources, for explaining the structure of afterglows and source energetics, as well as to X-ray flash sources, which we interpret as GRB jets viewed at an angle $\theta_{\rm obs} > \theta_{\rm n}$. We use data on the image size of the radio afterglow of GRB 030329 (Taylor et al. 2004) to constrain the physical parameters of this explosion. Together with the observed broad band spectrum, this data over-constrains the physical parameters, thus enabling to test different GRB jet models for consistency. We consider two extreme models for the lateral spreading of the jet: model 1 with relativistic expansion in the local rest frame, and model 2 with little lateral expansion as long as the jet is highly relativistic. We find that both models are consistent with the data for a uniform external medium, while for a stellar wind environment model 1 is consistent with the data but model 2 is disfavored by the data. Our derivations can be used to place tighter constraints on the dynamics and structure of GRB jets in future afterglows, following a denser monitoring campaign for the temporal evolution of their image size., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figues; submitted to ApJ

A general formalism is developed for calculating the luminosity function and the expected number $N$ of observed GRBs above a peak photon flux $S$ for any GRB jet structure. This new formalism directly provides the true GRB rate without the need for a `correction factor'. We apply it to the uniform jet (UJ) and universal structured jet (USJ) models for the structure of GRB jets and perform fits to the observed log(N)-log(S) distribution from the GUSBAD catalog which contains 2204 BATSE bursts. A core angle $\theta_c$ and an outer edge at $\theta_{max}$ are introduced for the structured jet, and a finite range of half-opening angles $\theta_{min}\leq\theta_j\leq\theta_{max}$ is assumed for the uniform jets. The efficiency $\epsilon_\gamma$ for producing gamma-rays, and the energy per solid angle $\epsilon$ in the jet are allowed to vary with $\theta_j$ (the viewing angle $\theta_{obs}$) in the UJ (USJ) model, $\epsilon_\gamma\propto\theta^{-b}$ and $\epsilon\propto\theta^{-a}$. We find that a single power-law luminosity function provides a good fit to the data. Such a luminosity function arises naturally in the USJ model, while in the UJ model it implies a power-law probability distribution for $\theta_j$, $P(\theta_j)\propto\theta_j^{-q}$. The value of $q$ cannot be directly determined from the fit to the observed log(N)-log(S) distribution, and an additional assumption on the value of $a$ or $b$ is required. Alternatively, an independent estimate of the true GRB rate would enable one to determine $a$, $b$ and $q$. The implied values of $\theta_c$ (or $\theta_{min}$) and $\theta_{max}$ are close to the current observational limits. The true GRB rate for the USJ model is found to be $R_{GRB}(z=0)=0.86^{+0.14}_{-0.05} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ

SN 2001em, identified as a Type Ic supernova, has recently been detected in the radio and X-rays, $\gtrsim$ 2 yr after the explosion. The high luminosities at such late times might arise from a relativistic jet viewed substantially off-axis that becomes visible only when it turns mildly relativistic and its emission is no longer strongly beamed away from us. Alternatively, the emission might originate from the interaction of the SN shell with the circumstellar medium. We find that the latter scenario is hard to reconcile with the observed rapid rise in the radio flux and optically thin spectrum, $F_\nu\propto\nu^{-0.36\pm 0.16}t^{1.9\pm 0.4}$, while these features arise naturally from a misaligned relativistic jet. The high X-ray luminosity provides an independent and more robust constraint -- it requires $\sim 10^{51}$ erg in mildly relativistic ejecta. The source should therefore currently have a large angular size ($\sim$ 2 mas) which could be resolved in the radio with VLBA. It is also expected to be bipolar and is thus likely to exhibit a large degree of linear polarization ($\sim 10%-20%$). The presence of a relativistic outflow in SN 2001em would have interesting implications. It would suggest that several percent of SNe Ib/c produce mildly relativistic jets, with an initial Lorentz factor $\Gamma_0\gtrsim 2$, while the fraction that produce GRB jets (with $\Gamma_0\gtrsim 100$) is $\sim 100$ times smaller. This could considerably increase the expected number of transients similar to orphan GRB afterglows in the radio, and to a lesser extent in the optical and X-rays, if there is a continuous distribution in $\Gamma_0$. Furthermore, this may give further credence to the idea that core collapse SNe, and in particular SNe Type Ib/c, are triggered by bipolar jets., Comment: recent X-ray detection of SN 2001em by Chandra strengthens our conclusions

We discuss the effects of particle acceleration at the bow shocks expected in the binary pulsar system J0737-3039, due to the wind from pulsar A interacting with both the interstellar medium (ISM), and with the magnetosphere of pulsar B. In this model, we find that the likeliest source for the X-rays observed by Chandra is the emission from the shocked wind of pulsar A as it interacts with the ISM. In this case, for favorable model parameter values, better statistics might help Chandra marginally resolve the source. A consequence of the model is a power law high energy spectrum extending up to $\lesssim$ 60 keV, at a level of $\sim 2 \times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$., Comment: accepted to ApJL; clearer presentation and improved estimate for the high energy emission

We consider some recent developments in GRB/afterglow observations: (i) the appearance of a very hard prompt component in GRB 941017, and (ii) variability in the early afterglow light curves of GRB 021004 and GRB 030329. We show that these observations fit nicely within the internal-external shocks model. The observed variability indicates that the activity of the inner engine is more complicated than was thought earlier and that it involves patchy shells and refreshed shocks. The two leading models for the structure of GRB jets are the uniform jet model and the universal structured jet (USJ) model. In the latter, all GRB jets are intrinsically identical and the energy per solid angle drops as the inverse square of the angle from the jet axis. The simplicity of the USJ model gives it a strong predictive power, including a specific prediction for the observed GRB distribution as a function of both the redshift $z$ and the viewing angle $\theta$. We show that the current sample of GRBs with known $z$ and estimated $\theta$ does not agree with the predictions of the USJ model. This can be best seen for a relatively narrow range in $z$, in which the USJ model predicts that most GRBs should be near the upper end of the observed range in $\theta$, while in the observed sample most GRBs are near the lower end of that range. Since the current sample is very inhomogeneous (i.e. involves many different detectors), it should be taken with care and cannot be used to rule out the USJ model. Nevertheless, this sample strongly disfavors the USJ model. Comparing the prediction for the observed GRB distribution both in $\theta$ and in $z$, with a larger and more homogeneous GRB sample, like the one expected from Swift, would either clearly rule out the USJ model, or alternatively, provide a strong support for it. The gamma-ray burst (GRB) of October 17, 1994 (941017), showed a distinct high energy spectral component extending from $\lesssim$ a few MeV to $\gtrsim$ 200 MeV, in addition to the typical GRB emission which peaked at $\lesssim$ a few hundred keV. The high energy component carried at least $\sim$ 3 times more energy than the lower energy component. It displayed an almost constant flux with a rather hard spectrum ($F_\nu \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha \sim 0$) from $\lesssim$ 20 s into the burst up to $\sim$ 200 s, while the duration of the GRB, where 90% of the energy in the lower energy component was emitted, was only 77 s. Such a high energy component was seen in only one out of $\sim$ 30 GRBs in which a similar component could have been detected, and thus appears to be quite rare. We examine possible explanations for this high energy spectral component and find that most models fail. The only emission region that provides the right temporal behavior is the reverse shock that goes into the GRB ejecta as it is decelerated by the ambient medium, or possibly the very early forward shock while the reverse shock is still going on. The best candidate for the emission mechanism is synchrotron self-Compton emission from the reverse shock. Even in this model the most natural spectral slope is only marginally consistent with the observed value, and some degree of fine tuning is required in order to improve the agreement. This might suggest that an additional or alternative emission mechanism is at work here. A prediction of this interpretation is that such a high energy component should be accompanied by a bright optical transient, similar to the one observed in GRB 990123., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL

The exciting detection of a very high degree of linear polarization, $P=(80\pm 20)%$, in the prompt gamma-ray emission of GRB 021206, supports synchrotron emission as being the dominant radiation mechanism. There were also claims that this implies a magnetic field ordered on large scales within the ejecta, that must therefore be produced at the source, which in turn was used as an argument in favor magnetic fields playing an active role in the production of GRB jets. However, an alternative explanation was suggested which also works with a magnetic field that is generated in the internal shocks and does not originate at the source: a very narrow jet, of opening angle $\theta_j\sim 1/\gamma$, where $\gamma\gtrsim 100$ is the Lorentz factor during the GRB, viewed at $\theta_j<\theta_{obs}\lesssim\theta_j+1/\gamma$. We calculate $P$ for these two scenarios, and find that it is significantly easier to produce $P\gtrsim 50%$ with an ordered field. More specifically, we obtain $P\sim(43-61)%$ for an ordered transverse magnetic field, $B_{ord}$, whereas a random field within the plane of the shock, $B_\perp$, produces $P\lesssim(38-54)%$ for a single pulse in the GRB light curve, but the integrated emission over many pulses (as measured in GRB 021206) is a factor of $\sim 2$ lower. A magnetic field normal to the shock front, $B_\parallel$, produces $P\sim(35-62)%$ for the emission integrated over many pulses. However, polarization measurements from GRB afterglows suggest a more isotropic shock-produced field configuration that would reduce $P$ by a factor $\sim 2-3$. Therefore, an ordered magnetic field, $B_{ord}$, that originates at the source, can produce the observed polarization most naturally, while $B_\parallel$ is less likely, and $B_\perp$ is the least likely of the above., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; an improved assumption on the distribution of cooled electrons simplifies the expressions for the polarization. We calculate the time evolution of the flux, apparent size, and image centroid motion of gamma-ray burst (GRB) radio jets, and show that they can be resolved by the VLBA at distances of hundreds of Mpc. We find that GRB 030329 which showed spectroscopic evidence for an associated Type Ic supernova (SN) at a distance of $\approx$ 800 Mpc might just be resolvable by VLBA after several months. The prospects are much better for jets that are oriented sideways in similar SNe with no GRB counterpart; in particular, the motion of the flux centroid in such jets can be detected by VLBA up to $z\sim 1$ even when the jet cannot be resolved. If most GRBs are accompanied by a Type Ib/c SN, then there should be a few SN/GRB jets per year within a distance $\lesssim$ 200 Mpc, and most of them would be oriented sideways with no gamma-ray or X-ray precursor. Detection of these jets can be used to calibrate the fraction of all core collapse SNe that produce relativistic outflows and determine the local GRB rate. Overall, the rate of Type Ib/c SNe that do not produce a GRB at all, but rather make relativistic radio jets with an initial Lorentz factor of a few, may be larger by up to 2 orders of magnitude than the rate of those that produce GRBs., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; minor changes to match version published in ApJL

GRB 030329 is unique in many aspects. It has a very low redshift for a GRB, $z=0.1685$, and is therefore very bright and easy to monitor, making it the most well studied afterglow to date. It shows a supernova bump in the light curve, with a spectrum very similar to SN 1998bw, thus establishing with much better confidence the connection between GRBs and core collapse SNe. There are also two important physical characteristics that make this burst especially interesting, aside from its remarkably low redshift. First, unlike most GRB afterglows, the light curve of GRB 030329 shows a very large variability a few days after the burst. These fluctuations show a roughly constact amplitude, and a constant duration $\Delta t$, while $\Delta t/t$ decreases with time $t$. Second, its $\gamma$-ray energy output and X-ray luminosity at $10 $hr are a factor of $\sim 20$ and $\sim 30$, respectively, below the average value around which most GRBs are narrowly clustered. We consider several interpretations for the variability in the light curve, in the context of different physical mechanisms, and find that the most likely cause is refreshed shocks, i.e. slow shells that are ejected from the source and catch up with the afterglow shock at late times. In GRB 030329 this happens after the jet break, which implies an approximately constant duration $\Delta t$ of the bumps, in agreement with the observations. This interpretation also explains the anomalously low initial energy of this burst, as the total energy of the afterglow shock is increased by a factor of $\sim 10$ due to the refreshed shocks, thus bringing the total energy output close to the average value for all GRBs., Comment: 11 pages two figures. Linear polarization at the level of $\sim 1-3%$ has by now been measured in several gamma-ray burst afterglows. Whereas the degree of polarization, $P$, was found to vary in some sources, the position angle, $\theta_p$, was roughly constant in all cases. Until now, the polarization has been commonly attributed to synchrotron radiation from a jet with a tangled magnetic field that is viewed somewhat off axis. However, this model predicts either a peak in $P$ or a $90^\circ$ change in $\theta_p$ around the ``jet break'' time in the lightcurve, for which there has so far been no observational confirmation. We propose an alternative interpretation, wherein the polarization is attributed, at least in part, to a large-scale, ordered magnetic field in the ambient medium. The ordered component may dominate the polarization even if the total emissivity is dominated by a tangled field generated by postshock turbulence. In this picture, $\theta_p$ is roughly constant because of the uniformity of the field, whereas $P$ varies as a result of changes in the ratio of the ordered-to-random mean-squared field amplitudes. We point out that variable afterglow light curves should be accompanied by a variable polarization. The radiation from the original ejecta, which includes the prompt gamma-ray emission and the emission from the reverse shock (the `optical flash' and `radio flare'), could potentially exhibit a high degree of polarization (up to $\sim 60%$) induced by an ordered transverse magnetic field advected from the central source., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; footnotes addressing relevant new observations added

We carry out a numerical hydrodynamical modeling for the evolution of a relativistic collimated outflow, as it interacts with the surrounding medium, and calculate the light-curve resulting from synchrotron emission of the shocked fluid. The hydrodynamic equations are reduced to 1-D by assuming axial symmetry and integrating over the radial profile of the flow, thus considerably reducing the computation time. We present results for a number of different initial jet structures, including several different power-laws and a Gaussian profile for the dependence of the energy per unit solid angle, $\epsilon$, and the Lorentz factor, $\Gamma$, on the angle from the jet symmetry axis. Our choice of parameters for the various calculations is motivated by the current knowledge of relativistic outflows from gamma-ray bursts and the observed afterglow light-curves. Comparison of the light curves for different jet profiles with GRB afterglow observations provides constraints on the jet structure. One of the main results we find is that the transverse fluid velocity in the comoving frame ($v_t$) and the speed of sideways expansion, for smooth jet profiles, is typically much smaller than the speed of sound ($c_s$) throughout much of the evolution of the jet; $v_t$ approaches $c_s$ when $\Gamma$ along the jet axis becomes of order a few (for large angular gradient of $\epsilon$, $v_t\sim c_s$ while $\Gamma$ is still large). This result suggests that the dynamics of relativistic structured jets may be reasonably described by a simple analytic model where $\epsilon$ is independent of time, as long as $\Gamma$ along the jet-axis is larger than a few., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures. We present the main observational features expected for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) that occur inside pulsar wind bubbles (PWBs). This is the most natural outcome of the supranova model, where initially a supernova (SN) explosion takes place, leaving behind a supra-massive neutron star, which loses its rotational energy over a time t_sd and collapses to a black hole, triggering a GRB. We find that the time delay, t_sd, between the SN and GRB events is the most important parameter that determines the behavior of the system. We consider the afterglow, prompt GRB and PWB emission. Constraints on the model are derived for a spherical PWB, from current afterglow observations and the lack of direct detection of the PWB emission. We find that a simple spherical model cannot account for the X-ray features detected in some afterglows, together with the typical afterglow emission that was observed for the same GRBs. The discrepancies with observations may be reconciled by resorting to a non-spherical geometry, where the PWB is elongated along the polar axis. Finally, we predict that the inverse Compton upscattering of PWB photons by the relativistic electrons of the afterglow (external Compton) should lead to high energy emission during the early afterglow that may explain the GeV photons detected by EGRET for a few GRBs, and should be detectable by future missions such as GLAST., Comment: 4 pages, contributed talk at the meeting "Gamma Ray Bursts in the Afterglow Era - Third Workshop", September 2002, Rome, Italy

We investigate how the angular structure of GRB jets effects the afterglow light curves at different viewing angles, $\theta_{v}$, from the jet symmetry axis. A numerical hydrodynamical modeling for the evolution of a relativistic collimated outflow, as it interacts with the surrounding medium, is carried out, and compared to two simple models that make opposite and extreme assumptions for the degree of lateral energy transfer. The Lorentz factor, $\Gamma$, and kinetic energy per unit solid angle, $\epsilon$, are initially taken to be power laws of the angle $\theta$ from the jet axis. We find that the lateral velocity in the comoving frame, $v'_\theta$, is typically much smaller than the sound speed, $c_s$, as long as $\Gamma\gg 1$, and the dynamics of relativistic structured jets may be reasonably described by a simple analytic model where $\epsilon$ is independent of time, as long as $\Gamma(\theta=0)\ga$ a few. We perform a qualitative comparison between the resulting light curves and afterglow observations.
