The homogenization of environments (E) encouraged by modern society and by the productivist model of agriculture has resulted in the homogeneity of genotypes (G) thereby reducing GxE interaction to a parasitic source of inaccuracy (a residual). As this model is called into question and new societal values are affirmed, agriculture is diversifying to fit contrasted environments and may be represented by four models defined by two axes, one socio economic (individual logics vs. collective governance), and the other agroecological (analytical vs. systemic approaches). Models differ by (i) the objectives (from yield improvement to farmers empowerment), (ii) specific expectations concerning genotypes (from inherited genetic resources to varieties that represent genetic, ethical and social progress), (iii) a specific representation of the environment (from E, a simple interaction between the agroecological environment (M) and cultivation system (C ), to E including a range of socioeconomic components (Actors competences (A), Outlets (O), Legislation (L), , Society (S) ) and (iv) particular relations between G and E (from GxE to GxMxCxA under evolving constraints represented by LxOxS). Taking these diverse objectives into account has changed the way plant improvement is envisaged. Thus depending on the model concerned, the order, interest and status of the five classic stages of plant improvement (setting objectives, creating variability, selecting, evaluating and disseminating) may be called into question. Between the existing analytical model and a holistic model that remains to be developed, lies the challenge of ensuring the sustainability, efficiency and acceptability of plant breeding and resulting innovations. From a simple "noticing" that we attempt to reduce the GxE interaction has become an " objective " that we try to predict and valorize. Structuring the different components of E, G and GxE, enables us to extend the basic concept of representativeness both of the cultivation conditions and of the socioeconomic "positions" of the involved actors.

We studied and modeled damage caused by Helicoverpa armigera larvae on cotton with the aim of developing a coupled crop pest model. Two damage components were studied: the voracity (quantity of fresh matter and number of organs consumed) and feeding preferences (type of organ infested). The laboratory no-choice study of voracity on excised squares and bolls revealed that an H. armigera larva consumes 2,856 mg of fresh matter throughout its larval life, with the sixth instar consuming 86% of this quantity. This consumption rate corresponded to 23.6 squares, or 7.8 bolls. We developed equations to predict the quantity of fresh matter uptake from an individual plant organ, according to the organ mass and the larval instar. The field study of feeding preference confirmed previous findings that larvae prefer squares to bolls, with this preference decreasing as the larval age increases. However, no significant relationship was noted between the age of larvae and the size of infested organs within each organ class (square or boll). We developed a logistic model to predict the probability of a larva infesting a boll rather than a square. According to this model, the relative organ availability in the field and the larval instar were found to be significant factors.

Postharvest trash contamination, such as honeydew deposited by certain insects, reduces the market value of cotton fibre. Sticky fibre may clog spinning mills, resulting in breakdowns, production losses and poor quality end products. It is essential for both producers and spinners to be able to accurately-measure cotton stickiness so as to optimize the bale binding process. CIRAD thus invented two stickiness measuring instruments-the SCT thermodetector and the high-speed H2SD detector.

Suivant le principe de la méthode APLAT, le rendement de génotypes prédit par un modèle de simulation de cultures est développé en série de Taylor à l'ordre 1 au voisinage du vecteur connu de paramètres d'un génotype de référence. A l'aide de cette linéarisation locale, l'estimation des paramètres inconnus des génotypes se fait par régression linéaire des rendements observés sur la sensibilité des sorties du modèle de simulation de cultures par rapport aux paramètres. Nous appliquons ici cette méthode aux nouvelles données de 2005.

In Sahel, scarcity and randomness of water resources are the main explanation of the variability of the plant response in multilocation trials. This variability is known for plant breeders under the name of interaction between genotype and environment (G x E). To choose a genotype for a given environment supposes to be able to predict what each genotype will produce under a range of predictable agroclimatic situations of this environment. Most of the classical G x E interaction analysis methods describe the phenotype by a function of the genotype and environment effects that can be estimated from agronomic trials. However environment is variable from year to year and this approach cannot result in good prediction of genotypes performances in a new environment. Nevertheless, factors that must be taken into account are known for a given environment. They include for each trial, rainfall, solar radiation, wind, etc. The problem is that these climatic variables are too many. Water balance models exist and make it possible to take into account the climate effects on cultures, but their parameters must be determined for each new genotype, which is expensive. We propose to predict genotypes' response in new environments taking into account their climate, without excessive costs. The tool to be developed is intended initially for Sahel plant breeders who will be able, in short plant breeding programs (2-3 years), to reduce the uncertainty of the new genotypes performances prediction. This study involves three High Speed Stickiness Detectors (H2SD) located in three different laboratories. The goal is first, to determine between-measurement variability for each of these devices and second to compare the mean count in each device with the others. Fifteen cottons covering a wide range of 1 to 60 sticky spots were mixed twice using a laboratory opener, and were then dispatched to the laboratories. Each laboratory made 10 measurements with its H2SD on the 15 cottons following a randomized block design. The entire measurement procedure was replicated twice. The square of the number of sticky spots was analyzed using a mixed linear model, with fixed laboratory and long-term time effects, and random short-term time effects. The residual variability within the laboratories was approximately the same for all three. Some short term or longer-term drift was observed, depending on the laboratory. Significant differences were observed between the laboratories, though the correlation between the results was very high (R2=0.96, 0.97 or 0.99). The usefulness of a calibration is discussed.

Le cotonnier est une plante à croissance continue. Du fait du chevauchement des phases fructifères et végétatives pendant une bonne période de la vie de la plante, la durée des différentes phases de mise en place de la production est difficile à caractériser. L'objectif de ce travail était de proposer une méthode de mesure de la longueur du cycle des génotypes de cotonnier, autre que celles basées sur les récoltes ou l'ouverture des capsules, et qui permet de déterminer plus précisément la date de "cut out" physiologique. L'étude a été réalisée durant les années 2002 et 2003 à Okpara à partir d'un essai à trois facteurs : date de semis (semis de juin et semis de juillet), densité (42000, 125000 et 167000 plantes par ha) et variété : Mar 88-214 (USA), Oultan (Ouzbékistan) de cycle court et de port réduit; Stam 18 A, (Bénin-Togo), Irma A 1042 (Cameroun) et S 188 (Nicaragua) à cycle long et de grand développement végétatif, Chaco 520 (Argentine) à longueur de cycle intermédiaire. Le dispositif expérimental a été un split-split-plot à trois répétitions. Les génotypes ont été observés pour la date d'apparition des fleurs à toutes les positions de branche fructifère, le rythme de progression de la floraison le long de l'axe principal, les nombres de noeuds au-dessus de la fleur du jour en première position de branche fructifère (nawf), les dates d'apparition de première fleur, les dates d'ouverture de première capsule et la précocité de production exprimée par la part de la première récolte dans la récolte totale (R1/RT). La date d'ouverture de la dernière fleur en première position ayant donné une capsule (DDFP1) estimait bien la date d'apparition de la dernière fleur ayant donné une capsule ou date de dernière fleur utile (DDFU); la DDFP1 était en outre bien corrélée aux paramètres habituels d'appréciation de la précocité des génotypes de cotonnier et pouvait ainsi servir à caractériser la durée du cycle chez les variétés de cotonnier ; elle pouvait être estimée à partir des équations de régression linéaire entre les dates d'initiation des fleurs en premières positions de branche fructifère et les numéros de branche fructifère ; elle a présenté de fortes héritabilités comme la plupart des critères de durée de cycle.

The cut cotton sample used for the commercial evaluation of cotton bales is taken at a single point from one or two sides of the bale. It should be verified that this sample is sufficient to perform quality measurement hat is adequately precise to avoid litigation. On one hand, the variability of the H2SD stickiness measurement within a bale has been addressed by Gozé (2002) and Frydrych (2004) who showed that stickiness was variable within a bale. On the other hand, the studies about the within-bale variability of the other fibre characteristics measurements, while available for US cotton, are very few in a small farmers context. In another growing country where cotton is grown by small property holders, we achieved a study on technology of farmer's cotton fibre. Our study compared cotton technology of cotton farmer's samples, in four villages located in contrasted ecological conditions. Results show a broad range of quality between localities and between farmers. As in many producing countries, seed-cotton fed in the ginning plant comes from successive modules that may originate from different localities and farmers without taking into account the quality consequences; a strong variability of fibre characteristics inside a bale could result. When preparing a bale, different layers of cotton are superimposed by a tramper before pressing. Our hypothesis is that within-bale variability is concentrated between the layers (vertically) whereas within-layer variability (horizontal) is lower. If such is the case, specially designed samples taken from the entire side of the bale, i.e. in the form of a superficial strip involving all the layers, should be more representative than a simple cut cotton sample that involves only few of the layers. We tested this hypothesis by means of a sampling study involving 24 bales from 4 different origins. A three-dimensional matrix of 8x2x2 was used to study the variability in all 3 directions of the bales. Also, a comparison between the conventional cut cotton sample and the superficial vertical strips determined which method, in practice, gave the best results. The H2SD results clearly showed in the first part of this study (Frydrych, 2004) that the new sampling method is interesting to reduce the H2SD measurements variability. This paper reports the results about other fibre technological measurements on the same samples.

En Afrique, où la culture est pluviale, et où les semis sont effectués manuellement pendant une longue période de temps (de fin mai au 15 juillet au Bénin), se pose le problème du choix de la variété à cultiver en fonction de la longueur du cycle de pluies prévisible. L'objectif de ce travail était d'étudier les effets des facteurs date de semis et densité sur la durée du cycle de différentes variétés de cotonnier dans les conditions du Bénin. Les essais ont été conduits durant les campagnes 2002-2003 et 2003-2004 sur les Centres d'expérimentation de Cana (situé au sud de la zone cotonnière) et d'Okpara (Centre de la zone cotonnière).Le dispositif expérimental était un split-split-plot à trois répétitions. Dix variétés de différentes précocités et assez contrastées au plan morphologique et origine géographique ont été testées à 42000, 125000 et 167000 plantes par ha et à deux dates de semis : un semis à date normal et un semis retardé. Les durées des différentes phases du cycle ont été appréciées à partir du suivi de la date moyenne d'apparition des premières fleurs (PFM) et des dates d'ouverture de dernières fleurs en première position ayant donné de capsule (DDFP1). Le temps de floraison utile a été calculé comme étant la différence entre DDFP1 et PFM. Les hautes densités et les semis retardés ont allongé le temps nécessaire à l'apparition de la première fleur ; elles ont raccourci le temps nécessaire à l'apparition de la dernière fleur qui donna une capsule récoltable ; le temps de floraison utile a été alors raccourci. Les variétés testées ont présenté une grande variabilité de temps de floraison utile indépendante de la précocité de floraison ou d'arrêt de la mise en place des capsules et permettent de mieux raisonner les recommandations variétales en culture pluviale.

The Simbad model has been developed by the authors for modelling the demography and feeding behaviour of the four main African species of cotton bollworms. Linked with the cotton crop simulation model Cotons®, CotonSimbad allows an assessment of yield loss due to a bollworm attack, given the size of the pest population, the species composition of the population, the date of the attack and the crop management sequence. The goal of the integrated model is to define rules allowing decision on a chemical spray according to the environment and the crop management. These decision rules have then to be tested at the on-farm level. This paper illustrates the use of CotonSimbad model to produce simple decision rules that can be tested in the field.

The cut cotton sample used for the commercial evaluation of cotton bales is taken at a single point from one or two sides of the bale. It should be verified that this sample is sufficient to perform an H2SD stickiness measurement that is adequately precise to avoid litigation. If a more representative sampling method must be used, this is also beneficial for other technological measurements. The study into the feasibility of producing standard cottons (Beltwide, 2002) has already demonstrated the advantages of mixing cotton bales by cotton breaker as this reduces the dispersion coefficient of H2SD measurements from 7 to 1.5. The dispersion coefficient corresponds to the ratio between the variance and the mean of the counts. Its value is ideally 1 for sticky points distributed randomly within a perfectly homogeneous bale. It reaches 4.4 for cotton from the Sudan (Fonteneau Tamime, 2000) and only 2.7 for cotton from the USA (Héquet, 2003). A large part of the variability observed in stickiness measurements is therefore due to within-bale heterogeneity, and attempts can be made to reduce this by improving sampling methods. When preparing a bale, different layers of cotton are superimposed by a tramper before pressing. Our hypothesis is that within-bale variability is primarily located between the layers (vertically) whereas within-layer variability (horizontal) is low. If such is the case, samples taken from the entire side of the bale, i.e. in the form of a superficial strip involving all the layers, should be more representative than a simple cut cotton sample that involves only some of the layers. We tested this hypothesis by means of a sampling study that involved 24 bales from 4 different origins (3 continents). A three-dimensional grid of 8x2x2 was used to study variability in all 3 directions. Also, a comparison between the conventional cut cotton sample and the superficial vertical strips determined which method, in practice, gave the best results. The H2SD results clearly showed that stickiness was variable within the bale. The superficial vertical strip is close to the mean of the different layers, and the variability obtained was less pronounced than with the cut cotton samples. The other technological measurements are ongoing. The vertical strips were removed using a specially-designed, manual tool. Further research is required to develop an automatic sampling device to remove this sample, which is representative of bale stickiness. (texte intégral)

International audience; Une étude a été menée au Nord-Cameroun afin de déterminer la loi de probabilité des infestations de chenilles de la capsule du cotonnier, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), Diparopsis watersi (Rothschild) et Earias spp. Des sondages ont été réalisés en milieu semi-contrôlé dans des parcelles de cotonnier sans protection insecticide, sur 31 sites de 1989 à 1993. L'étude de la relation entre la moyenne et la variance de ces sondages a permis de mettre en évidence une loi binomiale négative de coefficient k estimé à 5,70. Pour les échantillons de taille fixe (25 plants observés), la valeur du seuil d'intervention a été calculée en fonction du seuil économique et des risques. Les méthodes d'échantillonnage séquentiel sont présentées et leur intérêt discuté. Des propositions sont avancées visant le transfert de ces résultats en milieu paysan. Une seconde étude a été menée afin de caractériser la distribution verticale des chenilles sur les cotonniers. Des observations ont été réalisées sur station à Maroua, sur parcelles traitées et non traitées, de 1996 à 1999. Ces observations ont permis de montrer que la distribution des chenilles sur la plante se modifiait durant la campagne. La proportion de chenilles portées par les dix branches fructifères terminales de l'axe principal diminue progressivement depuis l'entrée en floraison jusqu'à environ 90 jours après levée, ensuite cette évolution s'inverse en fin de cycle. La distribution des chenilles est dépendante de l'espèce considérée, mais elle n'est pas influencée par la protection insecticide. A partir de ces résultats, une technique d'échantillonnage rapide a été mise au point

Le cotonnier est une plante à croissance indéterminée qui possède une aptitude à compenser des pertes d'organes fructifères, ce qui rend complexe la détermination d'un seuil de tolérance économique. Le modèle Simbad (Simulation of Bollworm Attacks and Damages) a été développé en vue de modéliser la démographie et le comportement alimentaire des quatre principales espèces africaines de chenilles de la capsule du cotonnier. Le couplage des modèles Cotons® et Simbad permet d'évaluer les pertes de production occasionnées par une population de chenilles, en fonction de paramètres d'entrée tels que l'effectif de la population, sa composition faunistique, la date de l'attaque, le potentiel de production de la culture, etc... Des exemples d'applications sont présentés pour illustrer les effets de la date de semis, de la fertilisation ou de la durée de la saison des pluies sur les seuils de tolérance économique.

High-speed stickiness detector (H2SD) is a measuring instrument that counts sticky spots revealed by pressure and temperature. Standard cottons of known stickiness are needed for inter-laboratory tests and routine calibration of H2SD. An important issue is the variability of the measurements in a batch of standard cotton. The typical size of a batch is a bale. Two experiments were carried out to determine how much H2SD counts vary within batches of various sizes, and to what extent mixing the cotton reduces this variability. The first study was made on five batches of 2.4 kg of cottons, covering a wide range of stickiness caused either by Aphis gossypii or Bemisia tabaci; the second study was made on an entire bale, whose heavy stickiness was caused by Aphis. The small batches were opened 1, 2 or 3 times using a minicard without flats, and then optionally carded. The entire bale was mixed 1, 2 or 3 times with a beater and ultimately carded. There were unmixed controls for both experiments. The minimum achievable variability of a count is known from spatial distribution theory: if sticky spots were randomly scattered in a perfectly homogeneous cotton, the number of spots in a specimen would follow a Poisson distribution, with a variance equal to the bale mean. Thus, nor standard analysis of variance nor coefficient of variation are suitable to analyze counts: the first one requires a constant variance, and the second one requires the variance to be proportional to the square of the mean. A log-linear mixed model was used to analyze the data, in order to estimate different components of variability, namely between samples in a batch, and between specimen within a sample. In both experiments, the between sample variability was reduced to a negligible value after two mixing operations (whether opening or carding or beating). The within sample variability was less affected by the mixing operations and stabilized at 1.3 times that of the Poisson distribution after two or more mixings. We therefore recommend mixing a bale twice before using it as a standard for stickiness. The statistical distribution of the number of sticky spots in such a bale is yet to be found, in order to derive confidence intervals, repeatability and reproducibility. Meanwhile, one can provisionally enlarge Poisson confidence intervals by 14%. We wish to thank Cotton Inc. Des observations ont été réalisées sur station à Maroua, sur parcelles traitées ou non traitées, de 1996 à 1999. Ces observations ont permis de montrer que la distribution des chenilles sur la plante se modifiait durant la campagne. La proportion de chenilles portées par les dix branches fructifères terminales de l'axe principal diminue progressivement depuis l'entrée en floraison jusqu'à environ 90 jours après levée, ensuite cette évolution s'inverse en fin de cycle. La distribution des chenilles est dépendante de l'espèce considérée, mais elle n'est pas influencée par la protection insecticide. A partir de ces résultats, une technique d'échantillonnage rapide a été mise au point. Cette technique repose sur l'observation des dix branches fructifères supérieures des plants. Un abaque permettant de définir des seuils d'intervention a été calculé et les risques associés à cette nouvelle technique d'échantillonnage ont été estimés. La technique d'observation rapide permet de diviser par deux la durée des observations.

Preparing reference cottons for the calibration of stickiness measuring instruments requires full control over the variability of the number of sticky points and an appropriate mixing method to obtain sufficient homogeneity in the fiber masses to be used. The reference cottons produced are intended for use both within the same laboratory and in different laboratories. In the first case, the objective is to guarantee that stable counts are obtained by a given machine under the operating conditions used in that laboratory. Here, the availability of sufficiently homogeneous and stable reference cottons enables the operators to detect any drift and make the necessary adjustments (calibration verifications). In the second case, the aim is to guarantee correspondence between the results obtained by different machines and therefore by different operators. As well as providing each user with cotton that within the batch is homogeneous and stable, it is important to guarantee that the different batches of reference cotton are also homogeneous one with another. A preliminary laboratory study to evaluate the variability of the stickiness and the effect of the preparation process on the homogeneity of the mixtures was conducted using a small amount of cotton (a few kg). The results obtained are not therefore necessarily extendable to the industrial scale. A second study focused on the variability of the stickiness after the different opening and mixing steps on the industrial scale, using an entire bale. This corresponds to the final objective of the project, i.e. to homogenize entire bales of cotton in order to produce sufficient quantities of reference cottons. The High Speed Stickiness Detector (H2SD) was used to determine mean stickiness and its variability in the samples selected as possible future reference cottons. The results of the laboratory study and those obtained on the industrial scale (ongoing) show than i) mean stickiness decreases slightly with the number of preparation operations, ii) the distribution of the sticky points more closely approaches a Poisson distribution from the second opening step onward. At this stage in the study, it would therefore appear possible to produce reference cottons for the periodic verification of H2SD stickiness measuring instruments.

Le régime alimentaire des chenilles de la capsule du cotonnier, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), Diparopsis watersi (Rothschild), Earias spp. et Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) a été étudié sur station de 1996 à 1999. Le type d'organes attaqués par les chenilles et leur localisation ont été suivis par des observations quotidiennes. Les préférences alimentaires sont apparues qualitatives: les chenilles ont une préférence pour les boutons ou les capsules (préférence fonction de l'espèce et/ou du stade larvaire), mais il n'existe pas de relation entre l'âge des chenilles et la taille des organes attaqués. Deux modèles ont été élaborés afin de simuler la composition du régime alimentaire des chenilles. Le premier modélise par un modèle log-linéaire les interactions entre la composition (boutons ou capsules) du régime alimentaire et la disponibilité des organes dans la parcelle. Le second modèle simule la localisation des attaques sur les plants en fonction du stade phénologique de la culture.

Due to climatic conditions, Southern Europe is at the limit of the rice cropping area. All European rice cropping regions share common constraints (short vegetative period and cold tolerance) but also have specific problems (cryptogamic or insect pests, salt tolerance, grain quality...). So, European rice breeding has specific needs. So, the European Commission has supported a research program for the characterization of available European rice genetic resources in order to evaluate their diversity and structure. The evaluation of about 50 agronomic, morphological and technological traits of 430 genotypes was conducted from 1996 to 2000 in France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal. The obtained data show that genotype X environment interactions are low and can be neglected for most of observed traits, and can be used to build up a reliable database very useful to breeders.

Des propositions sont avancées visant le transfert de ces résultats en milieu paysan dans le cadre de programmes de protection sur seuil d'intervention.

Depuis la fin des années soixante, le Sahel enregistre des périodes de sècheresse récurrentes. Des épisodes secs de dix à quinze jours consécutifs occasionnent une baisse des rendements des principales cultures alimentaires, comme le mil et le sorgho. Prévoir le rendement de ces cultures constitue une préoccupation majeure pour les responsables chargés de gérer les stocks céréaliers, de contrôler leurs flux et de déclencher l'aide alimentaire. En vue d'améliorer ces prévisions, basées jusqu'ici sur des enquêtes et des sondages, il est dorénavant possible de recourir à des méthodes déterministes fondées sur la connaissance des relations entre sol, eau, plante et atmosphère, et de la distribution spatio-temporelle des pluies. Grâce aux techniques informatiques actuelles, les premiers indicateurs de production peuvent être fournis un à deux mois avant les récoltes. Le diagnostic hydrique des cultures renseigne sur le degré de satisfaction en eau des cultures. Des indicateurs susceptibles d'être utilisés comme estimateurs de rendement sont calculés au moyen du logiciel Dhc, développé au centre régional Agrhymet avec l'appui du Cirad. Les objectifs de cette analyse sont d'évaluer les points forts et les faiblesses du Dhc-cp (dernière version spatiale) et de discuter des options scientifiques et techniques pour son amélioration : adaptation du modèle de culture aux itinéraires techniques plus traditionnels ou intensifiés, prise en compte du photopériodisme, de la production de grain et de biomasse

Les résultats de mesure du collage réalisées sur des milliers d'échantillons a permis de mettre en évidence les paramètres d'une loi de distribution des points collants au sein des balles. A partir de cette information, le risque de litige maximal a été évalué dans le cas d'un exemple particulier d'utilisation du H2SD.

Pour ces études, 24 balles de cotons représentant une large gamme de collage ont été sélectionnées pour être filées en filature classique à anneau et curseur, ainsi que par filature à bouts libérés sur du matériel de dimension industrielle. Un maximum de relevés sur la productivité des équipements et la qualité des fibres et des fils a été réalisé. L'analyse des résultats a permis d'analyser l'effet du collage sur la productivité des équipements et la qualité des filés obtenus.

Différentes méthodes de classement peuvent être mises en oeuvre lors le classement des balles en lots de qualité homogène. La méthode la plus adaptée à la caractérisation du collage des fibres de coton a été retenue suite à l'étude de leurs avantages et inconvénients. Cependant, il existe un risque non nul d'obtenir des résultats différents sur deux échantillons provenant d'une même balle, risque qui peut conduire à des réclamations commerciales. Cette communication donne une définition du risque de litige, et explicite un moyen d'en estimer l'importance.

Fiber quality variability is one of the key determinants of the profitability of the cotton crop. As this variability increases, the risk associated with production increases and the expected return decreases. Prior to our studies, variability had been characterized at the field or crop lever. New technologies permit the analysis of very small samples such that multi-scales studies are possible. We characterized the variability in fiber properties and associated with genetic, environmental, and production-linked sources. This research uses exclusively statistical models with the objective of studying the link between fiber quality variability and different levers at which this variability can be assessed in a cotton population. The treatments imposed on the different plots (water stress, nutrient levers, plasticulture) had as objective the induction of different variances in fiber properties and thus allowing the statistical associations to be made between sources and nature of the variability. We were able to measure the effect of treatments on the number of bolls/m2 and the vegetative development of the plants. Subsequently we want to specifically associate and characterize the changes in this variability at different scales in a production plot.

A non-random sampling plan is proposed for monitoring insect infestation in cotton to facilitate spraying, based on action thresholds, to control Aphis gossypii on cotton plants in Central Africa. Non random sampling is preferred to random sampling because it is easier to implement. It is validated by the spatial distribution of the insect. This was studied with variograms and the probability distribution calculated by numerical integration.

A diagonal sampling plan is proposed for monitoring insect infestation in cotton tofacilitate spraying, based on action thresholds, to control Helicoverpa armigera in sub-Saharan Africa. The spatial distribution of larvae was studied with variograms. The probability distribution was inferred from the relationship between mean and variance. The probability distribution parameters were obtained by maximum likelihood estimation.

Cotton stickiness is a serions problem for many producing countries. In Sudan, 1000 bales of the 1996 production WERE selected and sampled to study the féasibility of a bale stickiness classification. Sixteen thousand samples tested on the Sticky Cotton Thermodetector show that within-bale variance increases with the mean. Statistical investigations show that the distribution of sticky points for certain bales is over-dispersed with respect to the Poisson distribution. Fitting of' Negative binomial distribution was studied, but the dispersion parameter seems to be dependent on the mean. This law will therefore be difficult to apply.

Les lépidoptères carpophages constituent un groupe important de nuisibles du cotonnier. Pour protéger efficacement cette importante culture contre eux, le producteur doit dépenser et de son argent et de son temps. Il existe une possibilité de minimiser le temps consacré à la lutte contre ces ravageurs. Cette étude présente un plan d'échantillonnage basé sur la détermination de la loi binomiale nombre de chenilles sur une partie de la plante. L'on peut ainsi déclencher un traitement insecticide avec un résultat satisfaisant sans avoir à observer tout le plant mais une portion du plant. Une économie de 30 à 70% du temps d'observation peut être réalisé en limitant les observations aux 10 branches fructifères supérieures.
