Demand forecasting for seasonal products becomes especially challenging in the case of fast innovations, where the product portfolio is upgraded every season. In addition to the problem of forecasting demand without any historical data, companies also have to deal with frequent stockouts, which bias past sales and provide an unreliable anchor for making new forecasts. We show how one can use machine learning models to leverage information on comparable products from the past together with experts' forecasts to improve forecasting accuracy. A machine learning forecast using only statistical features results in a forecast error reduction of 24%, measured by weighted mean absolute percentage error, compared to a purely judgmental prediction on data from Canyon Bicycles. Better yet, an integrated human-machine forecast leads to a further 14% reduction in forecast error, indicating that experts' predictions remain essential for forecasting demand for rapidly innovating seasonal products. International Large-Scale Assessments (ILSAs) have had significant impact on education policy across the globe. But has interest in ILSAs now started to wane? This paper presents new evidence on this issue, exploring how the amount of attention three major ILSAs receive compares across countries, between studies and over time. Using information on Google searches made for ILSAs over time, we illustrate how results from TIMSS and PIRLS results receive significantly less attention than those from PISA. Globally, interest in ILSAs seems to have peaked in 2012 and has been on the decline since. There is however substantial cross-country variation, with increasing interest in some countries over the last decade (e.g. Sweden, Turkey) offsetting some of the fall in others (e.g. Japan, German). Moreover, while changes in scores seem to be related to the attention that ILSAs receive, other factors - including their current position in political and policy narratives - are also likely at play. Introduction: Heated tobacco products (HTPs) have emerged as a prominent category in the tobacco market, particularly within European countries such as Poland. The introduction of HTPs has been met with increasing public interest, reflected in online search behavior. However, the public health implications of this new form of tobacco consumption remain a concern due to the lack of comprehensive research on its long-term effects. This study aimed to track the trends in online searches related to HTPs in Poland between 2016 and 2022, and to assess the impact of significant events on these trends in order to provide insights into public awareness of HTPs. Methods: Utilizing Google Trends, a free source tool, this study analyzed relative search volume (RSV) for HTP-related keywords in Poland. Key events were identified and mapped against the fluctuations in RSV to understand their impact on search behavior. The analysis was confined to specific HTP-related keywords, excluding broader tobacco-related terms. Results: A notable increase in HTP-related search queries was observed, particularly around the time of product launches and legislative changes. The largest increases occurred during the introduction of HTPs to the Polish market and during major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: The study demonstrates a market interest in HTPs among Polish internet users, with search trends influenced by product launches and policy changes. The findings highlight the importance of monitoring online behaviors to inform public health efforts, despite limitations such as the lack of demographic data. Objectives: Assess the relationship between public interest in ankyloglossia as determined by internet search volume and real‐world medical claims data. Study Design: Retrospective Cohort Study. Setting: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using claims data from the Merative™ Marketscan® Research Databases. The internet search data was collected from Google Trends. Methods: Annual Google Trends data were compiled using search terms associated with "ankyloglossia" and "frenotomy" for the years 2011 to 2021. We obtained incidence of ankyloglossia diagnoses and frenotomy procedures in children under 12 months from Marketscan relative to all infants enrolled. We compared associations between search and incidence data among US states and over time. Results: Google search correlated with ankyloglossia incidence (r = 0.4104, P =.0031) and with frenotomy incidence (r = 0.4062, P =.0034) per state. Ankyloglossia diagnoses increased with Google search index (coefficient = 0.336, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.284, 0.388) and year (coefficient = 0.028, 95% CI 0.025, 0.031). Similarly, frenotomy procedures increased with Google search index (coefficient = 0.371, 95% CI 0.313, 0.429) and year (coefficient = 0.027, 95% CI 0.024, 0.030). Conclusions: Associations between online ankyloglossia search trends and both diagnosis and treatment rates, persist across US regions and timeframes. Measles remains a significant threat to children worldwide despite the availability of effective vaccines. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the situation by leading to the postponement of supplementary measles immunization activities. Along with this postponement, measles surveillance also deteriorated, with the lowest number of submitted specimens in over a decade. In this study, we focus on measles as a challenging case study due to its high vaccination coverage, which leads to smaller outbreaks and potentially weaker signals on Google Trends. Our research aimed to explore the feasibility of using Google Trends for real-time monitoring of infectious disease outbreaks. We evaluated the correlation between Google Trends searches and clinical case data using the Pearson correlation coefficient and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient across 30 European countries and Japan. The results revealed that Google Trends was most suitable for monitoring acute disease outbreaks at the regional level in high-income countries, even when there are only a few weekly cases. For example, from 2017 to 2019, the Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.86 (p-value< 0.05) at the prefecture level for Okinawa, Japan, versus 0.33 (p-value< 0.05) at the national level for Japan. Furthermore, we found that the Pearson correlation coefficient may be more suitable than Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient for evaluating the correlations between Google Trends search data and clinical case data. This study highlighted the potential of utilizing Google Trends as a valuable tool for timely public health interventions to respond to infectious disease outbreaks, even in the context of diseases with high vaccine coverage. Background: Influenza-like illness (ILI) encompasses symptoms similar to influenza, affecting population health. Surveillance, including Google Trends (GT), offers insights into epidemic patterns. Methods: This study used multiple regression models to analyze the correlation between ILI incidents, GT keyword searches, and climate variables during influenza outbreaks. It compared the predictive capabilities of time-series and deep learning models against ILI emergency incidents. Results: The GT searches for "fever" and "cough" were significantly associated with ILI cases (p < 0.05). Temperature had a more substantial impact on ILI incidence than humidity. Among the tested models, ARIMA provided the best predictive power. Conclusions: GT and climate data can forecast ILI trends, aiding governmental decision making. The "efficient markets hypothesis", which is one of the asset pricing models of traditional finance theory, is based on the assumption that publicly available information is reflected in prices by rational investors with perfect information, and therefore it is not possible to obtain abnormal returns. On the other hand, models based on the assumption of bounded rationality argue that investors have cognitive constraints and one of these constraints is investor attention. Investor attention is a cognitive constraint that leads investors to focus only on a set of information, thus limiting their access to information. This constraint is used as a signal for stock price movements because it leads investors to buy only those stocks about which they have information. However, there are different views on how to measure investor attention. Approaches that measure investor attention indirectly use indirect proxies such as price, liquidity, return, and advertising expenditures, while approaches that measure investor attention directly either ask investors directly or monitor their behavior. Especially with the advancements in information and communication technologies, the widespread use of social media by investors to access investment ideas offers new tools to directly measure investor attention. Among these tools based on investors' information-seeking behaviors are Google and Baidu search volumes, Wikipedia page views, and tweets. Another financial dynamic influenced by investor attention is initial public offerings (IPOs). An IPO refers to the process of offering a firm's shares to the public in the primary market. Therefore, in an IPO, firms raise capital by offering their shares through the primary market. Predicting the performance of a stock in an IPO is crucial for both firms and investors. In this study, we use Google search volumes of firm names and symbols prior to the IPO as proxies of investor attention and the number of views of YouTube content that provides brief information about the IPO company and examine their impact on the performance of initial public offerings in Borsa Istanbul. The study also investigates which firm-specific characteristics are related to investor attention. In other words, it is also investigated which variables such as IPO size, number of shares, IPO price, reason for IPO, sector of the firm, and financial ratios attract more investor attention. As a result of the research, it was found that YouTube view counts are a better proxy for investor attention than Google search volumes. Within the scope of this study, both instruments used as proxies of investor attention are consistent with the assumption of bounded rationality, where perfect information is not available and cognitive abilities are limited. Additionally, the findings also suggest that investors value a firm's fundamental value and internal growth potential. Another aim of this study is to develop narrow artificial intelligence capable of making decisions regarding IPOs or supporting investor decisions within the scope of algorithmic financial transactions. Artificial intelligence is defined as the ability of a computer to perform various activities similar to intelligent beings. Super artificial intelligence refers to those with superhuman abilities; general artificial intelligence is designed to perform any task a human can perform; narrow artificial intelligence refers to artificial intelligence designed to perform a specific task. Therefore, each model developed within the scope of narrow artificial intelligence actually adds a new skill to general artificial intelligence. In this context, the findings obtained from this study provide a significant contribution to the development of financial artificial intelligence applications, especially in training bots engaged in algorithmic financial transactions related to IPOs. In other words, in practice, this study presents a narrow financial artificial intelligence product whose framework is limited to IPO performances, while in theory it reveals the determinants of investor attention. Crime is a major social problem in most developed and developing countries. It induces a social, economic, and psychological impact on the victim. Over the last few decades, India has also witnessed an increasing trend in crime rates. The majority of these crimes are property-related. This study aims to examine the relationship between online preventive searches on Google and the reduction in property crimes in the states of India. We use Poisson quasi-maximum likelihood estimation to analyze the panel dataset for four states on monthly frequency for the period 2017 to 2020. Our results indicate that preventive searches on Google are significantly related to reduced property crimes like Burglary, Robbery, and Theft. A one percent increase in preventive Google searches reduces property crimes by 0.37–0.60%. "Target Hardening" and "Formal Social Control" appear to be the highly correlated preventive inquiries, while "Surveillance" appear to be the least correlated. Our findings indicate that personal precautions are a much more reliable measure for preventing property-related crime than community-level measures. Our result remains robust for both the socially less progressive and highly progressive states. This study contributes to policy discussions by taking a new perspective, providing novel empirical evidence, and contributing to academia through its quantitative approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Despite a lack of evidence, a number of regenerative therapies have become popularized treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED). Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and shockwave therapy have received significant attention through direct-to-consumer marketing and are advertised as viable alternatives to guideline-backed therapies. Additionally, focused low-intensity shock wave therapy (LiSWT) has become conflated with acoustic or radial wave therapy (rWT), although their mechanism of wave generation and tissue penetration is distinct. GAINSWave, a marketing platform for acoustic wave therapy, has also pervaded the marketplace. We aim to evaluate the relative impact of direct-to-consumer marketing of shockwave therapy and PRP by analyzing the quantity of Google internet search queries for selected regenerative and guideline-backed non-regenerative therapies for ED. METHODS: National Google Search trends in the United States (www.google.com/trends) were analyzed to characterize interest in different forms of therapy for ED. Search trends for PRP, LiSWT (and various iterations), intracavernosal injections (ICI), intraurethral injections (IU), vacuum erectile device (VED), and GAINSWave were analyzed. Monthly search data were compiled over multiple years, ending at 2/28/2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic and state of emergency in the United States. Macro-level changes in public interest were quantified using yearly averages. RESULTS: Patterns in Google Search interest in PRP and LiSWT increased respectively by 3-fold and 275-fold over the decade, representing a larger share of Google Searches by 2020. Trends in Google Search interest in selected types of shockwave therapy for ED also show that queries for GAINSWave commanded public interest, increasing by 219-fold from 2016 to 2020. CONCLUSIONS: Regenerative therapies for ED have produced interest surpassing other adjunct guideline-backed therapies, despite receiving the designation of experimental or investigational therapies. The establishment of GAINSWave also constitutes an inflection point for the whole shockwave market: searches for shockwave therapy increased by 782% between 2016 and 2020. Direct-to-consumer marketing of PRP and shockwave therapy has upturned the customary role of physicians in counseling patients about evidence-based therapies for ED. This increase in public interest in GAINSWave emphasizes its success as a marketing platform. The urological community should consider strategies to address misinformation, such as search-engine optimization, social media, and educational outreach.

Background: Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Increased education and utilization of BLS by first responders have had a significant impact, but certain populations remain high risk, such as African Americans. Raising awareness among at-risk populations may lead to more bystander CPR performed, improving mortality rates. The influence of celebrity deaths and illnesses is an important driver of public awareness. Therefore, the cardiac arrests of both Bronny James and Damar Hamlin may have influenced cardiac arrest awareness. Methods: Google Trends data was pulled for the following search terms from 8/21/2022–8/14/2023: Cardiac arrest (disease), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (topic), Basic Life Support (topic), Myocardial Infarction (disease), Defibrillation (topic) and Automatic External Defibrillator (topic). The average relative search volume (RSV) for each search term was taken for a three-week period encompassing the week of and two weeks following the cardiac arrests of Damar Hamlin and Lebron James Jr., respectively. We used one-way ANOVA and independent sample t-tests to compare the average values of Damar Hamlin's and LeBron James Jr.'s incidents with their respective 12-month averages. Results: RSV was significantly higher surrounding Hamlin's cardiac arrest compared to James Jr.'s for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillator. RSV for Basic Life Support was increased in LeBron James Jr.'s time compared to the 12-month average and Damar Hamlin's incident. Compared to the 12-month average, Cardiac arrest, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Defibrillation, and Automatic External Defibrillator during Hamlin's incident. Myocardial infarction RSV was higher during James Jr.'s incident compared to baseline. Facing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, statistical production increasingly relies on non-traditional data sources for timely and accurate information. In this regard, The National Statistical Office of Colombia (DANE, by its acronym in Spanish) initiated a project, supported by the Statistics Advisory Council, to develop an early estimator for the Colombian agricultural sector. This paper presents the results for the implementation of a Ridge model and Zero Shot Classification to estimate the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the agricultural sector, leveraging Google News and Google Trends. Results reveal that these alternative sources offer valuable insights into economic trends. Combining machine learning techniques with Nowcasting methods yielded precise projections. The Ridge method demonstrated the lowest estimation error, providing an early GDP indicator for the agricultural sector of 8,188 billion Colombian pesos for 2022 Q2, 30 days ahead of official publication.

Latar Belakang: Stunting merupakan kondisi kekurangan gizi kronis atau malnutrisi yang dapat menyebabkan gangguan pertumbuhan. Prevalensi stunting di Indonesia tahun 2018 masih terbilang tinggi yaitu sebesar 30,8%. Hal ini menggerakkan pemerintah untuk membuat program penanganan stunting dengan prioritas penanganan gizi spesifik dan sensitif 1000 hari pertama kehidupan meliputi pemberian ASI eksklusif, makanan pendamping ASI, dan imunisasi melalui berbagai kegiatan serta penyebarluasan informasi salah satunya melalui media digital. Literasi digital dan penggunaan internet di kalangan masyarakat telah meningkat sehingga informasi mengenai stunting semakin mudah dijangkau dan dapat mendukung upaya penanganan stunting di Indonesia. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui trend pencarian terkait intervensi stunting selama lima tahun terakhir menggunakan Google Trends Metode: Analisis terkait intervensi stunting dilakukan menggunakan Google Trends (https://trends.google.com/trends) dengan melihat tren pencarian tiga kata kunci yaitu ‘ASI eksklusif’, ‘MPASI’, dan ‘Imunisasi’ pada tahun 2018-2022 kemudian dibandingkan dengan data sekunder berupa data prevalensi stunting di Indonesia selama periode tahun 2019- 2022 dalam SSGI. Hasil: Pencarian kata kunci ‘ASI eksklusif’, ‘MPASI’ dan ‘Imunisasi’ pada tahun 2018-2022 memiliki tren yang berbeda. Pencarian kata kunci ASI eksklusif cenderung stabil, sementara kata kunci MPASI dan Imunisasi mengalami lonjakan pada waktu-waktu tertentu. Analisis daerah dengan pencarian kata kunci tertinggi menunjukan bahwa tingginya pencarian tiga kata kunci tersebut tidak selalu sejalan dengan trend capaian dari masing-masing program di wilayah terkait. Apabila dibandingkan dengan data stunting, maka tingginya pencarian kata kunci terkait intervensi stunting sejalan dengan prevalensi stunting yang semakin menurun sejak tahun 2018 hingga 2022. Kesimpulan: Minat pencarian terbesar di Google Trends selama lima tahun terakhir (2018-2022) terkait intervensi stunting dengan kata kunci “ASI eksklusif”, “MPASI”, dan “Imunisasi” ditemukan di provinsi Sulawesi Tengah, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Sulawesi Tenggara, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Jawa Tengah, Bangka Belitung, dan Bengkulu.

Abstract Background Due to the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, the interest of nutritional supplements has emerged. Limited data are available on how the COVID-19 pandemic affects the search interest in nutritional supplements in Taiwan and worldwide. The study aims to investigate changes in public search interest of nutritional supplements pre- and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Our World in Data dataset was used to collect both global and local (Taiwan) number of COVID-19 newly confirmed cases and deaths. Google Trends search query was being used to obtain relative search volumes (RSVs) covering a timeframe between 2019 to 2022. Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficients were used to measure relationships between confirmed new cases and deaths and RSVs of nutritional supplements. Multivariate analysis was conducted to examine the effect of domestic and global new cases and deaths on the RSVs of nutritional supplements. Results The mean RSVs for nutritional supplements were higher during the COVID-19 pandemic period (between 2020 to 2022) compared to the pre-pandemic period (year of 2019) for both Taiwan and worldwide. In terms of seasonal variations, except for vitamin D, the mean RSVs of probiotics, vitamin B complex, and vitamin C in winter were significantly lower compared to other seasons in Taiwan. The RSVs of nutritional supplements were not only affected by domestic cases and deaths but also by global new cases and deaths. Conclusions The interests in nutritional supplements had substantially increased in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The RSVs of nutritional supplements in Taiwan were not only influenced by global and domestic pandemic severity but also by seasons.

The ongoing depletion of natural systems and associated biodiversity decline is of growing international concern. Climate change is expected to exacerbate anthropogenic impacts on wild populations. The scale of impact on ecosystems and ecosystem services will be determined by the impact on a multitude of species and functional groups, which due to their biology and numbers are difficult to monitor. The IPCC has argued that surveillance or monitoring is critical and proposed that monitoring systems should be developed, which not only track developments but also function as "early warning systems." Human populations are already generating large continuous datasets on multiple taxonomic groups through internet searches. These time series could in principle add substantially to current monitoring if they reflect true changes in the natural world. We here examined whether information on internet search frequencies delivered by the Danish population and captured by Google Trends (GT) appropriately informs on population trends in 106 common Danish bird species. We compared the internet search activity with independent equivalent population trend assessments from the Danish Ornithological Society (BirdLife Denmark/DOF). We find a fair concordance between the GT trends and the assessments by DOF. A substantial agreement can be obtained by omitting species without clear temporal trends. Our findings suggest that population trend proxies from internet search frequencies can be used to supplement existing wildlife population monitoring and to ask questions about an array of ecological phenomena, which potentially can be integrated into an early warning system for biodiversity under climate change. Purpose: Many individuals search for obesity treatment options on the Internet. We aimed to analyze the popularity of pharmacological and surgical obesity treatment methods searched by Google users. Material and Methods: We used Google Trends to identify topics representing the following: recommended surgical methods (n = 9), recommended pharmacological methods (n = 10), and not recommended pharmacological methods (n = 34). The data was generated for 2004–2022 and 2020–2022. Relative search volume (RSV) was adjusted using "Gastric bypass surgery" as a benchmark. We analyzed the geographical and temporal trends of the topics. Results: In 2004–2022, the topics representing recommended surgical methods numerically gained the most popularity among Google users, but in 2020–2022 the recommended drugs exceeded other obesity treatment methods. The most popular individual topics since 2004 were "flaxseed," "Spirulina," "Carnitine," "Bariatric surgery," and "Orlistat." The most dynamic increases of searches since 2004 were observed for "Sleeve gastrectomy," "Curcumin," "Psyllium," and "Bupropion/Naltrexon." Since 2018, topics representing GLP-1 analogs such as "Semaglutide" and "Saxenda" revealed exponential increases in RSV, causing that "Semaglutide" to become the fourth most popular topic in 2020–2022. Conclusions: Google users across the world were the most interested in topics representing bariatric surgery, but recently recommended drugs for the treatment of obesity gained the most attention. The lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic led to increased interest in Fintech and digital finance solutions, and it gave people an incentive to join the formal financial sector by owning a formal account. People became interested in information about Fintech and digital finance solutions, and it led them to search the Internet to obtain information about Fintech, digital finance, and financial inclusion. In this study, we investigate whether interest in Internet information about Fintech and digital finance led to interest in Internet information about financial inclusion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using global data that capture interest over time, we found that interest in information about Fintech was greater in developed countries while interest in information about financial inclusion was greater in developing countries during the pandemic. Interest in Fintech information was strongly correlated with interest in financial inclusion information during the pandemic. Interest in Fintech information had a significant positive effect on interest in financial inclusion information during the pandemic. There is a unidirectional causality between interest in Fintech information and interest in financial inclusion information during the pandemic. The implication of these findings is that interest in Fintech information is an important determinant of interest in financial inclusion information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background & aims: The treatment options for systemicaUy progressed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have significantly expanded in recent years. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential of Google searches as a reflection of prescription rates for HCC drugs in the United States (US). Methods: We conducted an in-depth analysis of US prescription data obtained from the IQVIA National Prescription Audit (NPA) and corresponding Google Trends data from January 2017 to December 2022. We focused on drugs used in the first line and second or later treatment lines for HCC, collecting data on their prescriptions and search rates. Search volumes were collected as aggregated search queries for both generic drugs and their respective brand names. Results: During the study period from Q1 2017 to Q4 2022, monthly prescriptions for drugs used in HCC treatment showed an 173% increase (from 1253 to 3422). Conversely online searches increased by 3.5% (from 173 to 179 per 10 million searches). Notably, strong correlations were observed between search interest and prescriptions for newer drugs, which indicates increasing usage, while older drugs with declining usage displayed limited correlation. Our findings suggest a growing role of non-physician professions in managing systemically progressed HCC within the US healthcare system, although oncologists remained primarily responsible for drug prescriptions. Conclusions: In conclusion, online search monitoring can offer the potential to reflect prescription trends specifically related to the treatment of HCC. Google Trends search query was being used to obtain relative search volumes (RSVs) covering a timeframe between 2019 to 2022. Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficients were used to measure relationships between confirmed new cases and deaths and RSVs of nutritional supplements. Multivariate analysis was conducted to examine the effect of domestic and global new cases and deaths on the RSVs of nutritional supplements. Results: The mean RSVs for nutritional supplements were higher during the COVID-19 pandemic period (between 2020 to 2022) compared to the pre-pandemic period (year of 2019) for both Taiwan and worldwide. In terms of seasonal variations, except for vitamin D, the mean RSVs of probiotics, vitamin B complex, and vitamin C in winter were significantly lower compared to other seasons in Taiwan. The RSVs of nutritional supplements were not only affected by domestic cases and deaths but also by global new cases and deaths. Conclusions: The interests in nutritional supplements had substantially increased in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: This study aimed to analyse and relate the population interest through information search trends, on Metabolic Syndrome (MS) with the Occupational Health (OH). Method: Ecological and correlational study of the Relative Search Volume (RSV) obtained from Google Trends query, segmented into 3 searched periods concerning antiquity; date of query: September 30, 2023. Results: The lowest mean of the RSV was for the MS Topic (2.23 ± 0.87), albeit there was a positive correlation in the RSV amid MS and OH (R = 0.56; p < 0.05). Association (p < 0.05) was observed between the 3 periods under study, except for the Hypertension and Central Obesity topics, but significantly lower in the current period for the MS and OH Topics. Moderate seasonality was found in the MS topic (KPSS = 0.14; p > 0.05), and significant differences were demonstrated in the information search between developed and undeveloped countries (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Through their information searches, the whole population showed to have a dearth of knowledge of MS than of its component diseases. A relationship was found between the information searches carried out on MS and OH. The study of information search trends may provide useful information on the population’s interest in the disease data, as well as would gradually allow the analysis of differences in popularity, or interest even between different countries. Despite predictions that gambling prevalence would decrease over time, recent reports suggest an increasing trend that is an emerging but neglected public health problem. This study analyzed public concern regarding gambling as a health topic using aggregated Google searches. Using an infodemiological design, a search query using the keyword "Gambling (Topic)" was done in Google Trends. The region, category filters were set to "Worldwide" and "Health," with the timeframe as January 2004 to December 2021. The relative search volumes (RSV), monthly growth rate, related queries, and topics were compared and analyzed. Autoregressive integrated mean averaging (ARIMA) was also used to address seasonality, autocorrelations, and predict the RSVs in the following years, and correlation analyses determined relationships between RSVs for gambling in health and leisure categories. Results showed that after an initial decrease, there was a generally increasing trend in searches of gambling as a health topic, with a monthly growth rate of 1.36%. The RSVs for both categories are predicted to increase, with positive correlations that may be stronger in the future. Top and rising queries and topics revolved around gambling disorder-related concepts, treatment, venues, diagnosis, and online gambling, indicating an emerging public concern for the health consequences of gambling. Given the role of Covid-19 pandemic in accelerating the digital transformation in Europe, the main aim of this paper is to explain the unemployment rate in Romania based on Internet searches for jobs during the epidemic at national and county level. Google Trends indexes for certain keywords related to jobs in Romanian language (’’locuri de muncă’’ and ’’joburi’’) and the most famous websites with job announcements (’’eJobs’’ and ’’Hipo’’) are considered. At national level, the unemployment rate in the period February 2020-December 2022 in Romania is explained using an autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL) based on Google Trends index for ”locuri de munca”, while for youth unemployment ”joburi” and ”eJobs” are relevant. At county level, a spatial error model based on searches for ” locuri de munca” performs better than OLS regression. Radiolarians hold a high academic value (e.g., geological, paleontological, and biological); however, they are not well known to the public worldwide. In conjunction with the InterRad XV in Niigata 2017 (Fifteenth Inter-Rad, international conference of radiolarians), certain outreach activities were conducted to raise the profile of radiolarians. Changes in the Google Trends of "Radiolaria" in Japanese were analyzed to evaluate the publicity effect. The search frequency of the term "..." (Radiolaria in Japanese) increased in the first half of 2017 when the outreach activities were conducted. Image search frequency increased noticeably in September 2019 when a picture book featuring radiolarians was published with related photograph exhibitions. Outreach activities related to InterRad XVachieved the desired effect of raising the radiolarian profile. Furthermore, the release of the picture book and the organization of the photograph exhibitions may have attracted the interest of people in radiolarian images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a reportable disease of swine that causes far-reaching losses to affected countries and regions. Early detection is critically important to contain and mitigate the impact of ASF outbreaks, for which timely available data is essential. This research examines the potential use of Google Trends data as an early indicator of ASF outbreaks in Southeast Asia, focusing on the three largest swine producing countries, namely, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand. Cross-correlation and Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence indicators were used to evaluate the association between Google search trends and the number of ASF outbreaks reported. Our analysis indicate strong and moderate correlations between Google search trends and number of ASF outbreaks reported in Vietnam and the Philippines, respectively. In contrast, Thailand, the country of this group in which outbreaks were reported last, exhibits the weakest correlation (KL = 2.64), highlighting variations in public awareness and disease dynamics. These findings suggest that Google search trends are valuable for early detection of ASF. As the disease becomes endemic, integrating trends with other epidemiological data may support the design and implementation of surveillance strategies for transboundary animal diseases in Southeast Asia.

Understanding the interplay between investor sentiment and cryptocurrency returns has become a critical area of research. Indeed, this study aims to uncover the role of Google investor sentiment on cryptocurrency returns (including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and Tether), especially during the 2017–18 bubble (January 01, 2017, to December 31, 2018) and the COVID-19 pandemic (January 01, 2020, to March 15, 2022). To achieve this, we use two techniques: quantile causality and wavelet coherence. First, the quantile causality test revealed that investors’ optimistic sentiments have notably higher cryptocurrency returns, whereas pessimistic sentiments have significantly opposite effects. Moreover, the wavelet coherence analysis shows that co-movement between investor sentiment and Tether cannot be considered significant. This result supports the role of Tether as a stablecoin in portfolio diversification strategies. In fact, the findings will help investors improve the accuracy of cryptocurrency return forecasts in times of stressful events and pave the way for enhanced decision-making utility.

IntroductionTicks and pathogens they carry seriously impact human and animal health, with some diseases like Lyme and Alpha-gal syndrome posing risks. Searching for health information online can change people’s health and preventive behaviors, allowing them to face the tick risks. This study aimed to predict the potential risks of tickborne diseases by examining individuals’ online search behavior.MethodsBy scrutinizing the search trends across various geographical areas and timeframes within the United States, we determined outdoor activities associated with potential risks of tick-related diseases. Google Trends was used as the data collection and analysis tool due to its accessibility to big data on people’s online searching behaviors. We interact with vast amounts of population search data and provide inferences between population behavior and health-related phenomena. Data were collected in the United States from April 2022 to March 2023, with some terms about outdoor activities and tick risks.Results and DiscussionResults highlighted the public’s risk susceptibility and severity when participating in activities. Our results found that searches for terms related to tick risk were associated with the five-year average Lyme Disease incidence rates by state, reflecting the predictability of online health searching for tickborne disease risks. Geographically, the results revealed that the states with the highest relative search volumes for tick-related terms were predominantly located in the Eastern region. Periodically, terms can be found to have higher search records during summer. In addition, the results showed that terms related to outdoor activities, such as “corn maze,” “hunting,” “u-pick,” and “park,” have moderate associations with tick-related terms. This study provided recommendations for effective communication strategies to encourage the public’s adoption of health-promoting behaviors. Displaying warnings in the online search results of individuals who are at high risk for tick exposure or collaborating with outdoor activity locations to disseminate physical preventive messages may help mitigate the risks associated with tickborne diseases.

Smart cities have emerged as a promising solution to the problems associated with urbanization. However, research that holistically considers diverse stakeholders in smart cities is scarce. This study utilizes data from four types of collaborators (academia, public sector, industry, and civil society actors) to identify key topics and suggest research areas for developing smart cities. We used latent Dirichlet allocation and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers for topic extraction and analysis. The analysis reveals that sustainability and digital platform have received similar levels of interest from academia, industry, and government, whereas governance, resource, and green space are less frequently mentioned than technology-related topics. Hype cycle analysis, which considers public and media expectations, reveals that smart cities experienced rapid growth from 2015 to 2021, but the growth rate has slowed since 2022. This means that a breakthrough improvement in the current situation is required. Accordingly, we propose resolving the unbalanced distribution of topic interests among collaborators, especially in the areas of governance, environment, economy, and healthcare. We expect that our findings will help researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders in understanding which topics are underdeveloped in their fields and taking active measures for the future development of smart cities.

The Internet is an important gateway for accessing health-related information, and data generated through web queries have been increasingly used as a complementary source for monitoring and forecasting of infectious diseases and they may partially address the issue of underreporting. In this study, we assessed whether tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)-related Internet search volume may be useful as a complementary tool for TBE surveillance in Italy. Monthly Google Trends (GT) data for TBE-related information were extracted for the period between January 2017 and September 2022, corresponding to the available time series of TBE notifications in Italy. Time series modeling was performed by applying seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) models with or without GT data. The search terms relative to tick bites reflected best the observed temporal distribution of TBE cases, showing a correlation coefficient of 0.81 (95 % CI: 0.71–0.88). Particularly, both the reported number of TBE cases and GT searches occurred mainly during the summer. The peak of disease notifications coincided with that of Google searches in 4 of 6 years. Once calibrated, SARIMA models with or without GT data were applied to a validation set. Retrospective forecast made by the model with GT data was associated with a lower prediction error and accurately predicted the peak timing. By contrast, the traditional SARIMA model underestimated the actual number of TBE notifications by 65 %. Timeliness, easy availability, low cost and transparency make monitoring of the TBE-related Internet search queries a promising addition to the traditional methods of TBE surveillance in Italy.

Abstract Objective In‐office ablation of the posterior nasal nerve (PNN) has emerged as an effective treatment option for chronic rhinitis patients. This study explored questions patients commonly search online regarding this therapy and the quality of content available. Study Design A retrospective analysis of online search criteria and sources was performed with subsequent analysis of results. Setting Search and data acquisition was in September of 2023. Methods Most common search terms related to cryotherapy and radiofrequency neurolysis of the PNN were identified with associated People Also Ask (PAA) questions. Questions were categorized and organized into subtopics and sources evaluated using readability and quality metrics. Results A total of 255 unique PAA questions and 175 unique websites were identified. The most common subtopics were related to facts about chronic rhinitis (26.7%) and rhinitis treatment options (25.1%). Nearly a quarter (24.3%) of websites were from commercial sources. Quality metrics indicate difficult‐to‐read and low‐quality materials. Conclusion Existing online resources need improvement to provide patients material that is easier to read. Physicians counseling patients should be aware of these areas for adequate shared decision making.

ABSTRACT Purpose: The presented study was aimed to investigate the level of interest in gingival bleeding among internet users and its relationship with. demographic. economic and temporal variables. Materials and Methods: In this study. the relative search volume of the term "gum bleeding" both quarterly and annually from the data provided by Google Trends for 2017-2021 was analysed. The provincial level of interest in this term was analyzed along with the gross domestic product. population. data on illiteracy and data on dental visit obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey. Statistical significance was set at p0.05). Analysis of quarter-based data showed a lower volume for the term in the third quarters each of 2021. 2020. and 2018 compared to the other quarters (p=0.012. p=0.035. p 0.05). Conclusion: The outcomes revealed that gingival bleeding. an early sign of periodontal disease. exhibits seasonal variations. with a decrease during the summer months. No direct relationship was observed between provincial interest level and any variables. Google Trends data provides valuable insights into user interest in gingival bleeding. contributing to the understanding of public awareness of periodontal diseases.

This groundbreaking study leverages Google Trends to probe into consumer awareness of Romanian food products certified under European quality schemes, Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), and Traditional Specialty Guaranteed (TSG), delivering prompt insights and addressing an existing research void. By adopting an innovative methodology through big data analytics - Google Trends and analyzing 12 sets of search terms, this study brings fresh insights to academic discourse and provides valuable information for marketers and policymakers. Prominent search interest was detected for 'Salam de Sibiu', ‘Plăcintă dobrogeană', and 'Magiun de prune Topoloveni', pointing to significant consumer familiarity. The study also unveiled regional search patterns, signifying location-based preferences, and potential marketing prospects. However, a marked contrast was found between the high interest in the products and the relatively low awareness of their European quality labels, highlighting a need for enhanced communication initiatives around these certifications. The study could be limited by its focus on Romanian certified food products, which may not be applicable to other geographical contexts. Future research endeavours may also seek to integrate data from Google Trends data with additional indicators of consumer behaviour.

The increasing number of floods every year brings a wide impact; the average loss caused by floods every year reaches 4.64T (Rp). Information about floods is very important to improve the preparedness of people living in disaster-prone areas. If information can be provided when people have a high interest in learning, it can have a profound effect on increasing public knowledge. To carry out effective risk communication in flood disasters, knowledge about flood disaster patterns is needed, as well as knowledge about community behavior in seeking information. One of the people's behavior in searching for information can be seen from the Google Trends analysis. The purposes of this study are to analyse the relationship between public interest in finding information through google trends with the keyword "flood" with flood events in Indonesia for 10 years. This research is a quantitative descriptive study by processing data obtained from Google Trends and BNPB flood event data using the Spearman Rank Correlation statistical test with SPSS software. The results showed that Google Trends with the keyword "Flood" and the pattern of flood events had a strong positive relationship with a correlation coefficient of 0.64, this indicates that the increase in the incidence of disasters causes an increase in public interest in seeking information about flood disasters. Risk communication that was carried out before the disaster occurred was not yet optimal in reaching the community. Risk communication needs to be carried out before the months that are predicted to be the peak of flood events. Risk communication is carried out to form the preparedness of the Indonesian people so that the risk of flood disasters can be reduced.

Abstract Objectives In 2021 the UK government announced a new obesity policy requiring large out‐of‐home food outlets to provide mandatory in‐store calorie labeling on food and drink items. Public acceptability and engagement with obesity policies could influence the level of impact on wider public health particularly with population‐level policies such as calorie labeling. This study aimed to examine public responses and awareness of the policy using social media (Twitter) comments and Google trends data. Methods This study examined responses to social media posts on Twitter (tweets) from the UK Department of Health and Social Care detailing the policy, implementation date and post‐implementation information about the policy's enforcement. The sentiments of the tweets were coded and the number of likes and replies extracted. This study utilized google trends to examine public awareness of the policy by extracting weekly relative search volume for relevant phrases such as “calorie labeling.” Results From the 276 replies/quote‐tweet extracted, the majority expressed a negative sentiment toward the policy (N = 197/71.4%). There were fewer tweets expressing a positive sentiment (N = 25/8.7%) and a neutral/no sentiment (N = 54/19.6%). There was no difference in the number of “likes” or retweets between tweets expressing positive or negative sentiments. Five themes were identified expressing negative sentiments (most common being negative impacts on eating disorders). Google trends data revealed increased searches for “calorie labels/labeling” during the week of the policy enforcement compared to previous weeks in the last 5 years but no significant differences in searches for specific menu calorie labeling. Conclusions This analysis revealed negative sentiment toward and increased searching of calorie labeling information during the announcement and implementation of the 2021 mandatory calorie labeling policy in England. A greater understanding of public responses to calorie labeling policies may help tailor future policies and public communication strategies.

The comparison of Google internet searches for English words in construction for "construction stress", "construction mental" and "construction suicide" with reference to "construction worker" has not previously been undertaken. It is important to understand internet interest across these 3 terms as all are relevant to mental health and stress in construction. Suicide risk is significantly complex and multifactorial. Our aim is to investigate internet search interest across construction with a focus on mental, stress and suicide, and determine whether there is consistent interest across these search terms. Methods: Using Google Trends, data on global search queries we compared "construction mental" or "construction stress" and "construction suicide". Two time periods were compared, the last 5 years and the last 24 months, both till December 8th, 2022. The relationship between web search interest, reflected by search volume index (SVI) for society and community versus the business and industrial category and health category were evaluated. Results: Open category searches on Google trends for the key words "construction mental" or "construction stress" demonstrated moderate SVI peaks over a 5-year period. Sub-group analyses for the industrial and business category demonstrated consistent low interest in suicide compared to search terms related to stress or mental health. Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death globally. There is a causal relationship between smoking and lung cancer; nearly 90% of cases are caused by cigarette smoking. Aim: To investigate the public interest in the relationship between lung cancer and tobacco smoking through an analysis of searches in Google Trends over the past 16 years. Material and Methods: We conducted a systematic search through Google Trends using the search terms "lung cancer" and "smoking" to identify the numbers of lung cancer and tobacco smoking searches in populations from Turkey, the United States, and the whole world between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2019. Results: Online searches that reflect public awareness are nearly identical for both lung cancer and smoking; however, there is an inverse correlation between population interest and incidences of lung cancer and smoking. Furthermore, the numbers of searches on lung cancer and smoking decrease gradually in Turkey, in the world, and in the United States over the years, displaying a slight seasonal pattern. Conclusion: Informative and educational campaigns covering the whole year are required to raise awareness of the relationship between lung cancer and smoking and keep people argus-eyed. Background: In 2018, the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia was 30.8%, which has led to renewed focus on targeted interventions. Although specific measures such as exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and immunization have been prioritized, achieving optimal coverage remains a challenge. Limited knowledge has been identified as a potential barrier to the interventions. This study acknowledges the effectiveness of internet platforms in providing stunting prevention information. Objectives: To analyze search interest trends for exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and immunization from 2018 to 2022 using Google Trends. Methods: Google Trends was used to analyze search trends for the keywords 'exclusive breastfeeding', 'complementary feeding', and 'immunization' in Indonesia and three provinces with the highest number of searches, namely Central Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, Southeast Sulawesi, Yogyakarta, Central Java, Bangka Belitung, and Bengkulu. The data were compared with the prevalence of stunting and coverage of interventions. Discussion: Searches for exclusive breastfeeding tended to be stable, while searches for complementary feeding and immunization tended to spike at certain times. Analysis of the provinces with the highest number of searches showed that the high search volume did not necessarily correspond to the trends in the performance of interventions in the regions. Conclusions: Searches for 'exclusive breastfeeding', 'complementary feeding', and 'immunization' from 2018 to 2022 showed different trends. It's impossible to compare the data with the prevalence of stunting because of different trends. Objective: With the announcement of the pandemic, in the era of countries with lockdown, city quarantines, postponed non-obligatory clinical appointments, and curfew, the importance of the shift of health-care services to virtual environment increased. In this study, it was aimed to interpret the search volumes of "telepsychiatry" and "online therapy" topics, one of the telemental health services, based on Google Trends, to evaluate the health seeking behavior in society and the demand for telemental health services. Methods: Google Trends is a free to access tool that provides relative volume of the terms that people searched in Google engine. Relative Search Volumes on two topics, Telepsychiatry and Online Counseling, were obtained through Google Trends. Search titles are used as "topics" since they represent a group of terms in any language that Google trends covers. Results: Relative search results were evaluated as before and after the pandemic, online therapy and telepsychiatry. Comparisons that not normally distributed were assessed through Mann-Whitney U test. The search volume for telepsychiatry and online therapy after the pandemic increased significantly compared to before the pandemic (p<0.05). When search volumes in both before and after the pandemic were compared, interest to online therapy was superior than telepsychiatry in both periods (p<0.05). Conclusion: It could be said that, in time periods like pandemics and the cases that people cannot reach conventional mental health support, if the issues in legal, ethical, technical, therapeutic relationship, and professionalism could be overcome, the interest in telemental health would increase. Despite advances in the surgical management of peripheral nerve pathologies over the past several decades, it is unknown how public awareness of these procedures has changed. We hypothesize that Google searches for peripheral nerve surgery have increased over time. Google Trends was queried for search volumes of a list of 40 keywords related to the following topics in peripheral nerve surgery: spasticity, nerve injury, prosthetics, and nerve pain. Monthly relative search volume over the first 5 years of the study period (2010–2014) was compared with that of the last 5 years (2018–2022) of the study period. Search volumes for keywords "nerve injury," "nerve laceration," "peripheral nerve injury," "nerve repair," "nerve transfer", "neuroma," "neuroma pain," "nerve pain," "nerve pain surgery," and "neuroma pain surgery" all increased more than 10% points in relative search volume over the study period (P < 0.0001 for each keyword). In contrast, searches for "rhizotomy," "spasticity surgery," "targeted muscle reinnervation," "bionic arm," and "myoelectric prosthesis" either decreased or remained stable. Technical terms such as "selective neurectomy," "hyperselective neurectomy," "regenerative peripheral nerve interface," and "regenerative peripheral nerve interface surgery" did not have adequate search volume to be reported by Google Trends. The increase in Google searches related to nerve injury and pain between 2010 and 2022 may reflect increasing public recognition of these clinical entities and surgical techniques addressing them. Technical terms relating to nerve pain are infrequently searched, surgeons should use plain English terms for online discovery. Google Trends provides an easily accessible and cost-effective method of providing real-time insight into user interest. to address the gap in UK prevalence data for e-cigarettes by analyzing Google Trends to identify correlations with official data from Action on Smoking and Health. The study further evaluates Google Trend's sensitivity to real-time events and the ability for predictive models to forecast future data based on Google Trends. UK Google Trends data from 2012 to 2021 was analyzed to assess (a) the most popular electronic nicotine device terminology; (b) statistically significant points in time; (c) correlations between Relative Search Volumes and official reports on electronic cigarette use and (d) whether Google Trends could predict future patterns in data. These were achieved using Locally Weighted Scatterplot Smoothing regression, Pruned Exact Linear Time Method, cross correlation, and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average algorithms respectively. "Vape" was revealed to be the most popular electronic nicotine device terminology with a correlation coefficient greater than +0.9 when compared to official electronic cigarette consumption data within a one-year timescale (lag 0). Results from ARIMA modeling were varied with the algorithms forecasted trends line occasionally lying outside of a 95% prediction interval. Google Trends may correspond to population-based prevalence of electronic cigarette use. The changing trends coincide with changing policy decisions. Google Trends based prediction for online interest in electronic cigarettes requires further validation so should currently be used in conjunction with other traditional methods of data collections. Global dissemination of Chinese traditional cultures has always been a critical con‐ cern for modern China. Although some studies have explored the spatiotemporal distribution and influencing factors of Chinese traditional cultures from the perspective of geography, quanti‐ tative research on the differences in the attention of countries to traditional cultures is limited. Against this background, this research takes Lao Tzu, a famous ancient Chinese philosopher, and his thoughts "Tao Te Ching" as an example and uses the Google trend data derived from queries by Lao Tzu and Tao Te Ching as the keyword to measure the public's attention for 214 foreign countries and regions. By using the spatial statistical method of Geodetector, this study quantita‐ tively studied the differences and factors that might influence the attention to Lao Tzu's thoughts in the world from 2010 to 2021. It is found that major diplomatic events can enhance a country's attention to Lao Tzu and his thoughts in a short time, whereas the developed countries have high and sustained attention to Lao Tzu and his thought. The number of inbound tourists, the amount of export trade, the total number of people and the total number of translations greatly affect the attention of countries to Lao Tzu and his thoughts, indicating that cultural exchanges and bilater‐ al trade can significantly promote the spread of cultural thoughts. Cultural trade, social economy and other influencing factors are not independent and have enhanced effects of interaction. This paper can shed light on the global dissemination of Chinese traditional cultures by providing a method for measuring and analyzing influencing factors of the public's attention toward Chinese traditional cultures. The United Nations Council Assembly recognized sickle cell disease (SCD) as a global public health problem due to its increasing burden, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. To raise awareness, a resolution was adopted, designating June 19th as SCD awareness day. However, the impact of this awareness day on online health information seeking behaviour (OHISB) in African countries is not well understood, especially in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda where SCD prevalence is high. To assess the impact, the study used Google Trends data as a measure of OHISB for SCD. The analysis covered the 60 days before the awareness day, the awareness day itself, and the 60 days afterward. Time series analysis was conducted using joinpoint regression to identify significant changes in OHISB trends. The results indicated that the impact of the Sickle Cell Awareness Day on OHISB varied across African countries and did not consistently inspire significant changes in information seeking behaviour. This suggests the need for more targeted awareness campaigns to improve public knowledge of SCD in Africa. It also highlights the importance of revising the current awareness day or creating alternative health awareness initiatives that adopt a long-term approach and address the specific health needs of the African population. Furthermore, due to limitations in using Google Trends data in some African countries with insufficient data, future research should explore other sources of internet data or conduct surveys to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of the Sickle Cell Awareness Day on OHISB in Africa.
