Search

The Telescope Array Collaboration has observed an excess of events with $E \ge 10^{19.4} ~{\rm eV}$ in the data which is centered at (RA, dec) = ($19^\circ$, $35^\circ$). This is near the center of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster (PPSC). The PPSC is about $70 ~{\rm Mpc}$ distant and is the closest supercluster in the Northern Hemisphere (other than the Virgo supercluster of which we are a part). A Li-Ma oversampling analysis with $20^\circ$-radius circles indicates an excess in the arrival direction of events with a local significance of about 4 standard deviations. The probability of having such excess close to the PPSC by chance is estimated to be 3.5 standard deviations. This result indicates that a cosmic ray source likely exists in that supercluster., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Armchair graphene nanoribbons, when forming a superlattice, can be classified in different topological phases, with or without edge states. By means of tight-binding and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we studied the electronic and mechanical properties of some of these superlattices. MD shows that fracture in modulated superlattices is brittle, as for unmodulated ribbons, and that occurs at the thinner regions, with staggered superlattices achieving a larger fracture strain. We found a general mechanism to induce a topological transition with strain, related to the electronic properties of each segment of the superlattice, and by studying the sublattice polarization we were able to characterize the transition and the response of these states to the strain. For the cases studied in detail here, the topological transition occurred at $\sim$3-5 \% strain, well below the fracture strain. The topological states of the superlattice -- if present -- are robust to strain even close to fracture. Unlike the zero-energy edge states found in the zig-zag edges of graphene nanoribbons, the superlattice states shows signatures of being particularly insensitive to disorder, even in real space.

Radio-frequency (RF) carpets with ultra-fine pitches are examined for ion transport in gases at atmospheric pressures and above. We develop new analytic and computational methods for modeling RF ion transport at densities where dynamics are strongly influenced by buffer gas collisions. An analytic description of levitating and sweeping forces from phased arrays is obtained, then thermodynamic and kinetic principles are used to calculate ion loss rates in the presence of collisions. This methodology is validated against detailed microscopic SIMION simulations. We then explore a parameter space of special interest for neutrinoless double beta decay experiments: transport of barium ions in xenon at pressures from 1 to 10 bar. Our computations account for molecular ion formation and pressure dependent mobility as well as finite temperature effects. We discuss the challenges associated with achieving suitable operating conditions, which lie beyond the capabilities of existing devices, using presently available or near-future manufacturing techniques., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures v2: author list update and pre-journal submission adjustments

The main focus of the present work is to study quasi-one-dimensional kink-antikink stripes embedded in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation. Using variational techniques, we reduce the interaction dynamics between a kink and an antikink stripe on their respective time and space dependent widths and locations. The resulting reduced system of coupled equations is found to accurately describe the width and undulation dynamics of a single kink stripe as well as that of interacting ones. As an aside, we also discuss two related topics: the computational identification of the kink center and its numerical implications and alternative perturbative and multiple scales approaches to the transverse direction induced dynamics for a single kink stripe in the two-dimensional realm., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

In the present work, we explore analytically and numerically the co-existence and interactions of ring dark solitons (RDSs) with other RDSs, as well as with vortices. The azimuthal instabilities of the rings are explored via the so-called filament method. As a result of their nonlinear interaction, the vortices are found to play a stabilizing role on the rings, yet their effect is not sufficient to offer complete stabilization of RDSs. Nevertheless, complete stabilization of the relevant configuration can be achieved by the presence of external ring-shaped barrier potentials. Interactions of multiple rings are also explored, and their equilibrium positions (as a result of their own curvature and their tail-tail interactions) are identified. In this article, we report the electronic band structures of hexagonal bilayer systems, specifically, rotated graphene-graphene and boron nitride-boron nitride bilayers, by introducing an angle between the layers and forming new periodic structures, known as moir\'e patterns. Using a semi-empirical tight-binding approach with a parametrized hopping parameter between the layers, using one orbital per-site approximation, and taking into account nearest-neighbor interactions only, we found he electronic dispersion relations to be around K points in a low energy approximation. Our results show that graphene bilayers exhibit zero band gap for all angles tested in this work. In boron nitride bilayers, the results reveal a tunable bandgap that satisfies the prediction of the bandgap found in one-dimensional diatomic systems presented in the literature., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

Next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments aim for half-life sensitivities of ~$10^{27}$ yr, requiring suppressing backgrounds to <1 count/tonne/yr. For this, any extra background rejection handle, beyond excellent energy resolution and the use of extremely radiopure materials, is of utmost importance. The NEXT experiment exploits differences in the spatial ionization patterns of double beta decay and single-electron events to discriminate signal from background. While the former display two Bragg peak dense ionization regions at the opposite ends of the track, the latter typically have only one such feature. Thus, comparing the energies at the track extremes provides an additional rejection tool. The unique combination of the topology-based background discrimination and excellent energy resolution (1% FWHM at the Q-value of the decay) is the distinguishing feature of NEXT. Previous studies demonstrated a topological background rejection factor of ~5 when reconstructing electron-positron pairs in the $^{208}$Tl 1.6 MeV double escape peak (with Compton events as background), recorded in the NEXT-White demonstrator at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc, with 72% signal efficiency. This was recently improved through the use of a deep convolutional neural network to yield a background rejection factor of ~10 with 65% signal efficiency. Here, we present a new reconstruction method, based on the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm, which allows reversing the blurring induced by electron diffusion and electroluminescence light production in the NEXT TPC. The new method yields highly refined 3D images of reconstructed events, and, as a result, significantly improves the topological background discrimination. When applied to real-data 1.6 MeV $e^-e^+$ pairs, it leads to a background rejection factor of 27 at 57% signal efficiency., Comment: Submitted to JHEP

Four observations of Starlink's LEO communication satellites, Darksat and STARLINK-1113, were conducted on two nights with two telescopes. The Chakana 0.6\,m telescope at the Ckoirama observatory (Chile) observed both satellites on 5\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) and 7\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) using a Sloan r' and Sloan i' filter, respectively. The ESO VISTA 4.1\,m telescope with the VIRCAM instrument observed both satellites on 5\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) and 7\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) in the NIR J-band and Ks-band, respectively. The calibration, image processing, and analysis of the Darksat images give r\,$\approx$\,5.6\,mag, i\,$\approx$\,5.0\,mag, J\,$\approx$\,4.2\,mag, and Ks\,$\approx$\,4.0\,mag when scaled to a range of 550\,km (airmass $=1$) and corrected for the solar incidence and observer phase angles. In comparison, the STARLINK-1113 images give r\,$\approx$\,4.9\,mag, i\,$\approx$\,4.4\,mag, J\,$\approx$\,3.8\,mag, and Ks\,$\approx$\,3.6\,mag when corrected for range, solar incidence, and observer phase angles. The data and results presented in this work show that the special darkening coating used by Starlink for Darksat has darkened the Sloan r' magnitude by 50\,\%, Sloan i' magnitude by 42\,\%, NIR J magnitude by 32\,\%, and NIR Ks magnitude by 28\,\%. The results show that both satellites increase in reflective brightness with increasing wavelength and that the effectiveness of the darkening treatment is reduced at longer wavelengths. This shows that the mitigation strategies being developed by Starlink and other LEO satellite operators need to take into account other wavelengths, not just the optical. This work highlights the continued importance of obtaining multi-wavelength observations of many different LEO satellites in order to characterise their reflective properties and to aid the community in developing impact simulations and developing mitigation tools., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 10 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail by means of numerical methods. Different families of such solutions are identified. They develop small-amplitude spatially oscillating tails ("nanoptera") through a resonance of higher-order breather's harmonics with linear modes ("phonons") belonging to the continuous spectrum. These results demonstrate the ability of the 2D sG model within our finite domain computations to localize energy in long-lived, self-trapped breathing excitations., Comment: To be published in Commun. The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT) searches for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Xe-136 using high-pressure xenon gas TPCs with electroluminescent amplification. A scaled-up version of this technology with about 1 tonne of enriched xenon could reach in less than 5 years of operation a sensitivity to the half-life of neutrinoless double-beta decay decay better than 1E27 years, improving the current limits by at least one order of magnitude. This prediction is based on a well-understood background model dominated by radiogenic sources. The detector concept presented here represents a first step on a compelling path towards sensitivity to the parameter space defined by the inverted ordering of neutrino masses, and beyond., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

During the current COVID-19 pandemic it is imperative to give early warnings to reduce mortality. However, non-specialist such as authorities and the general population face several problems to understand the real thread of this pandemic, and under/overestimation of its risk are a commonplace in the press and social media. Here we define an index, which we call the COVID-19 Burden Index, that relates the capacities of the healthcare system of a given country to treat severe and critical cases. Its value is 0 if there is no extra strain in the healthcare system, and it reaches 1.0 when the collapse is imminent. As of 23 March 2020, we show that Chile, the USA, UK, among other countries, must reduce the rate of infections right now, otherwise, in less than 7 days they could be in a catastrophic situation such as Italy, Spain and Iran.

Measure the Sloan g' magnitudes of the Starlink's STARLINK-1130 (Darksat) and 1113 LEO communication satellites and determine the effectiveness of the Darksat darkening treatment at 475.4\,nm. Two observations of the Starlink's Darksat LEO communication satellite were conducted on 2020/02/08 and 2020/03/06 using a Sloan r' and g' filter respectively. While a second satellite, STARLINK-1113 was observed on 2020/03/06 using a Sloan g' filter. The initial observation on 2020/02/08 was a test observation when Darksat was still manoeuvring to its nominal orbit and orientation. Based on the successful test observation, the first main observation was conducted on 2020/03/06 along with an observation of the second Starlink satellite. The calibration, image processing and analysis of the Darksat Sloan g' image gives an estimated Sloan g' magnitude of $7.46\pm0.04$ at a range of 976.50\,km. For STARLINK-1113 an estimated Sloan g' magnitude of $6.59\pm0.05$ at a range of 941.62\,km was found. When scaled to a range of 550\,km and corrected for the solar and observer phase angles, a reduction by a factor of two is seen in the reflected solar flux between Darksat and STARLINK-1113. The data and results presented in this work, show that the special darkening coating used by Starlink for Darksat has darkened the Sloan g' magnitude by $0.77\pm0.05$\,mag, when the range is equal to a nominal orbital height (550\,km). This result will serve members of the astronomical community modelling the satellite mega-constellations, to ascertain their true impact on both the amateur and professional astronomical communities. The increase in data traffic on the internet has significantly increased the relevance of data and image encryption. Among the techniques most used in cryptography, chaotic systems have received great attention due to their easy implementation. However, it has recently been observed that these systems can lose their chaotic properties due to the finite precision of computers. In this work, we intend to investigate flexible computing tools, particularly interval analysis, to reduce this problem. We opted for the Lorenz System, as it is one of the few systems whose chaoticity is proven analytically. Magnonic excitations in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet CrI3 are studied. We find that bulk magnons exhibit a non-trivial topological band structure without the need for Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. This is shown in vdW heterostructures, consisting of single-layer CrI3 on top of different 2D materials as MoTe2, HfS2 and WSe2. We find numerically that the proposed substrates modify substantially the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy on each sublattice of the CrI3 subsystem. The induced staggered anisotropy, combined with a proper band inversion, leads to the opening of a topological gap of the magnon spectrum. Since the gap is opened non-symmetrically at the K+ and K- points of the Brillouin zone, an imbalance in the magnon population between these two valleys can be created under a driving force. This phenomenon is in close analogy to the so-called valley Hall effect (VHE), and thus termed as magnon valley Hall effect (MVHE). In linear response to a temperature gradient we quantify this effect by the evaluation of the temperature-dependence of the magnon thermal Hall effect. These findings open a different avenue by adding the valley degrees of freedom besides the spin, in the study of magnons.

At Paranal Observatory, the least predictable parameter affecting the short-term scheduling of astronomical observations is the optical turbulence, especially the seeing, coherence time and ground layer fraction. These are critical variables driving the performance of the instruments of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), especially those fed with adaptive optics systems. Currently, the night astronomer does not have a predictive tool to support him/her in decision-making at night. As most service-mode observations at the VLT last less than two hours, it is critical to be able to predict what will happen in this time frame, to avoid time losses due to sudden changes in the turbulence conditions, and also to enable more aggressive scheduling. We therefore investigate here the possibility to forecast the turbulence conditions over the next two hours. We call this "turbulence nowcasting", analogously with weather nowcasting, a term already used in meteorology coming from the contraction of "now" and "forecasting". We present here the results of a study based on historical data of the Paranal Astronomical Site Monitoring combined with ancillary data, in a machine learning framework. We study the dynamics and pairwise interactions of dark soliton stripes in the two-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. By employing a variational approach we reduce the dynamics for dark soliton stripes to a set of coupled one-dimensional "filament" equations of motion for the position and velocity of the stripe. The method yields good qualitative agreement with the numerical results as regards the transverse instability of the stripes. We propose a phenomenological amendment that also significantly improves the quantitative agreement of the method with the computations. Subsequently, the method is extended for a pair of symmetric dark soliton stripes that include the mutual interactions between the filaments. The reduced equations of motion are compared with a recently proposed adiabatic invariant method and its corresponding findings and are found to provide a more adequate representation of the original full dynamics for a wide range of cases encompassing perturbations with long and short wavelengths, and combinations thereof., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

In this paper an approach to generate hidden attractors based on piecewise linear (PWL) systems is studied. The approach consists of the coexistence of self-excited attrators and hidden attractors, i.e., the equilibria of the system are immersed in the basin of attraction of the seft-excited attractors, so hidden attractors appear around these self-excited attractors. The approach starts by generating a double-scroll attractor based on two equilibria presented heteroclinic orbits. Then, two equilibria are added to the system, so biestability is generated by displaying two self-excited attractor. In this paper we show that hidden attractors arise as a consequence of the rupture of trajectories that resemble heteroclinic orbits at a larger scale. Therefore, multistability appears naturally as an interesting phenomenon present in this class of dynamical systems via hidden attractors and self-excited attractors. The study suggests the feasibility of the geometric design of new classes of multistable systems with coexistence of the two classes of attractors or even multistable systems without equilibria at all.

In the present work we examine the statics and dynamics of multiple parallel dark soliton stripes in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Our principal goal is to study the effect of the interaction between the stripes on the transverse instability of the individual stripes. We use a recently developed adiabatic invariant formulation to derive a quasi-analytical prediction for the stripe equilibrium position and for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectrum of excitations of stationary stripes. The cases of two-, three- and four-stripe states are studied in detail. We subsequently test our predictions against numerical simulations of the full two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that the number of unstable eigenmodes increases as the number of stripes increases due to (unstable) relative motions between the stripes. Their corresponding growth rates do not significantly change, although for large chemical potentials, the larger the stripe number, the larger the maximal instability growth rate. We systematically construct stationary soliton states in a one-component, two-dimensional, repulsive, Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a ring-shaped target-like trap similar to the potential used to confine a Bose-Einstein condensate in a recent experiment [Eckel, et al.\ {\em Nature} {\bf 506}, 200 (2014)]. In addition to the ground state configuration, we identify a wide variety of excited states involving phase jumps (and associated dark solitons) inside the ring. These configurations are obtained from a systematic bifurcation analysis starting from the linear, small atom density, limit. We study the stability, and when unstable, the dynamics of the most basic configurations. Often these lead to vortical dynamics inside the ring persisting over long time scales in our numerical experiments. To illustrate the relevance of the identified states, we showcase how such dark-soliton configurations (even the unstable ones) can be created in laboratory condensates by using phase-imprinting techniques., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures
